  • CJ McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder explains the growth of their songwriting from 'Hate' to 'Holy War' to 'Dear Desolation' origin of "No Absolution" (as well as why it was a stressful time for him), being referred to as a deathcore band, how listening to different genres (pop, classical, rap, trap, electronic, dance, etc.) impacts their own music, and why he would never think to sell his legendary North Face windbreaker. Interview conducted in Toronto on September 16th, 2017.

    • @ultrahero2115
      @ultrahero2115 6 лет назад +18

      There's just this whole elitist stigma in the metal world with it being a very stagnant genre where uncreative bands write watered down death metal riffs and rely too much on breakdowns and chugs. There's a lot of truth to that notion in my opinion. However, there are a handful of brilliant deathcore bands. I don't LOVE Thy Art, but they're really solid and they definitely put more thought into their music than the average group in that style. My favorite group in the genre is probably the Red Chord. Glass Casket and early Wretched are close runners up.

    • @LetGoNoControl
      @LetGoNoControl 6 лет назад +8

      Couldn't have said it better myself and that's why you can't really blame people who despise "deathcore"
      Don't get me wrong i love breakdowns and chugs but those bands who only rely on it and have nothing new to offer has killed it for most Metalheads

    • @kingsizeblues616
      @kingsizeblues616 6 лет назад +10

      The majority of people that hate it so much would actually end up realising they really like parts of it. That's the sad thing, like you said its never given a chance

    • @AggressiveTendencies
      @AggressiveTendencies  6 лет назад +10

      Agreed with you. If you put on a deathcore album and swapped the production with a death metal band, they wouldn't think the breakdown was such a sin I'm sure. Fortunately, I've noticed the stance softening. I mentioned the fact that it's deathcore but people should still give it a chance in my Thy Art review for Banger TV, and there were a lot of comments saying "Who cares if it's deathcore? If it's good, it's good," which was nice. Though I worry if I hadn't mentioned it I would have gotten a lot of "Deathcore is all BS" comments. Fortunately we have more open minds around and will hopefully outweigh the judgment.
      Thank you for watching, guys!

If you go to one of your local deathcore shows with a Suicide Silence shirt on I gaurantee you most people there will think your either a poser or literally just getting into the scene and you just don't know any better yet.

I appreciate bands that are changing it up like new thy art and shadow of intent for example are implementing both breakdowns and guitar solos in just about every song. ive always liked solos but songs like the return by shadow of intent really made me really reappreciate them. Ive gotten really bored of bands using the same riffs while i dont want to admit it there is evidence that alot of deathcore bands literally have the same tabs. That point he made about people not checking out bands due to the deathcore label is so true, and it can hinder an entire band's career. Job for a Cowboy, an original MySpace deathcore band, never got the time of day from most death metal fans, all because they released ONE deathcore EP. Their debut album had no hints of deathcore on it, and every album afterwards got more and more progressive and technically proficient, but they were always dragged down because of Doom (Entombment... and Knee Deep specifically). It's insane.
    I know it's been 4+ years since this video, but it's still relevant, especially when JFAC dropped one of the best technical death metal albums ever, then haven't done anything since - and it's been EIGHT years since Sun Eater.

    I think their most brutal record is still infinite death
    Its so raw and its just how deathcore should sound. Everything after that is soft compared to that.
    Its the same with many bands that their first records are mostly the heaviest.

    I don't not listen to death core because of the name of the subgenre. I do think I prejudge death core bands into sounding a certain way (because it is a subgenre for that reason) and that may cause me to overlook de arch core bands. But I do have a few bands that I love. The art is murder is DEFINITELY one of them. One of the best death core bands imo

    I mean... Thyart is like straight up deathcore tho, like i get theres probably a deeper creative process than "Lets make a deathcore album" but the music literally just sounds like death metal with hardcore breakdowns, like their not doing much different from the other deathcore staples "Suicide Silence, OCEANO, Whitechapel)

    I really don't give a shit what genre Thy Art falls under. They make good heavy music, just straight up. And I do consider them metal. I think you're just trying to preserve some sort of status you think you have if you say they aren't metal because you call them deathcore. Like come on man. Some of their stuff sounds somewhat generic, sure. But for the most part, they have a pretty distinguishable style, they have soul, they're intense, and they make good music.

    People don't hate deathcore for being deathcore (unless you're a tool, which there are plenty of already)
    People hate deathcore because it's a genre that has been done to death and to begin with : it never was much of an inovating novelty.
    Simple.
    That's why people don't want shit to do with deathcore, because it means you enjoy "simple" music.
    Which isn't band. But it's a reason why a "Prog head" will shit on you and your favorite deathcore band, and guess what :
    He's right.

    Not sure why guys are involved in genres they don't particularly listen to. In the last couple weeks I've seen 3 videos of 3 singers from 3 different genre "defining" bands claiming they don't feel the scene. Archspires Oli hates tech death, code oranges drummer thinks hardcore is soft and cj doesn't like death core. Odd.

    Ok but they’re music isn’t really unique it sounds like any other deathcore band out there, creepy background noises, breakdowns, double bass with the break down, they’re not unique lol, their hate album and the previous one to that have songs that sound the exact same to one another, that being said I feel like if they tried new things they would be a kickass band, this guy has insane vocals and I respect reign of darkness any metal fan has heard that song, this is one of the first bands I ever heard and they got me into metal but they shouldn’t say their unique and all that, they’re not. I wish them the best though great guys from interviews I’ve seen before was lucky enough to see them live, they know how to put on a good show

    Listening to different music doesn't make you unique. PLAYING different music makes you unique. If you play deathcore for all your albums, you're not unique despite how much "non-metal music and pop music" you listen too lol. Just own up to being a deathcore icon and be proud because deathcore is fuckin sweet.

      Why can't anyone be proud of being deathcore
      Yeah some deathcore bands sound exactly the same as others
      But some (like Thy Art is Murder in my opinion)
      Add something extra to make their music stand out from standardised 0-0-0-0-0 playing
      Thy Art is Murder has the powerful lyrics and some solos
      (Btw love your videos my man

    He didn't say anything about himself hating deathcore. He said it is a bummer 'deathcore' has a negative connotation to it so people avoid their band because they are labeled in that genre. Way to further fuel that distaste for the word deathcore Aggressive Tendencies. Click-baity bullshit.

    Love this guy, love the band, but Aggressive Tendencies, if I see one more of these ''let‘s type some shit here in the title, even if it‘s not true, just to get views'', I will report you for misleading!!! He never said anything about hating Deathcore! Just the genre labelling, etc, because they are so much more than just a sub-genre! Be correct or just stop making videos. Because C.J. is a very open minded person when it comes to music and I knew that something about your title won‘t match. And If i was one of those millennials, who just read the title and that‘s it, I would now spread the word around, that CJ McMahon hates deathcore, and other idiots would believe me, because nowadays nobody is doing any research for themselves anymore!!! Do it right or don‘t do it at all!!!
