Ahhh so this tune was originally written back in the Zeppelin days!! Nice!! Always been one of my favorite Firm songs. The FIrm version is a killer production.
This sounds so great with Bonham! It's another part of Jimmy Page's "Swan Song" piece, parts of which are scattered throughout Zep and eventually became the Firm song "Midnight Moonlight." The descending riff in "Kashmir" comes from "Swan Song", and the "Bird on a Wing" bit was added into "White Summer" in 1970, and later into the "Guitar Solo" Page was playing as a long lead-in to "Kashmir" in 1977 (a good bent version is on the triple-album Cleveland soundboard bootleg "Destroyer").
Because white summer black mountain side and Kashmiri are in Dadgad tuning. Christian alade and Tony Franklin smoke bonzo and jonesy off the map on midnight moonlight. Swan song was a great idea, but it had no place in zoe's canon. It wouldn't worked on presense or in through the outdoor. Or coda, for that matter. I heard Swan song ages ago. Plant didn't like it. Glad he didn't. Paul Rodgers sang it better on midnight moonlight.
This is a unfinished piece of music that jimmy page titled "Swan Song" it was during the physical graffiti times. When the band broke up I guess he wanted to publish the song so he published it with the firm. And titled it Midnight Moonlight so technically it's the firms but it could also technically been zeppelin because of bonham playing the drums and JPJ on bass so yeah...
Yes but the firm's version of the "swan song"...is much prettier than this version Jimmy had prettier chords on acoustic guitar...during Paul Rodgers vocals.....sure wish they could've came out with some outtakes, and an isolated guitar track...you can hear it in Jimmy's live performance of "white summer"....on a bonus disc for the remastered 1st or 2nd Led Zeppelin albums
I completely disagree with that one, The Firm was a bust, they were terrible one OK song in Raido active even Mr. Page himself said that, look it up. That title goes to the Eagles it definitely isn't The Firm come on people who is on board with that?? Shit for that matter you can also throw The Cars in there as well as Def Leppard and how about this one Van Halen do some homework my friend..
@@briancallari4384 It’s all about taste. I loved The Firm. Listened to them all . All great bands but the Firm I wish lasted longer than they did. Jimmy Page came full circle playing in both a overrated and underrated band.
Wow, this is awesome to hear. I have the Firms cd. And listen to midnight moonlight every once in a while. Great music and Jimmy page is a master on both versions.
thanx''s for the listening love it seen jimmy play this live on his solo tour back a while lol played the song as a build-up with white-summer amazing!!!
Absolutely cooolest ... and supergroup THE FIRM with Bad Company- Zeppelin- Manfred Mann & Co set up these amazing numbers... The pilgrimage to the Heaven's of Rock Gods!!
Read "Hammer of the Gods" (Zep bio) and there is an interesting discussion on how Jimmy molded this song when he formed The Firm using bits of unfinished Zep material. He meant this to be a TSRS/ALS/Kashmir-type opus, but never finished it. Nice to hear it! Thanks for posting!
I'd actually recommend Studio Magik from Godfather. It literally has every circulating studio recording plus a few other things (like the Wanton Song radio broadcast) on a 16 disc set. There are a few torrents of it around.
I would have LOVED to hear this song completed by Zeppelin. The Firm with Paul did a great version. But, fuck, what if Zeppelin put it out there with Plant, Joanes and Bonham? One can only dream.
chris slade was the drummer for jimmy page's band "the firm" (made 2 albums in the 80's). they did a full version of "midnight moonlight" on their first album.
Couple riffs in there that aren't in any songs and are incredibly catchy. They sound like page riffs too. AWesome stuff. Wish they could have been given more time as a band to release them in future albums back in 1980 when bonzo died.
Bonzo and Jonesy Kick Fuckin major ass on this one, it's called The Swan Song BTW, it's a 20 minute recording that spawned a lot of songs for zeppelin, this is a snippet of it.
Anyone familiar with Led's bootlegs knows Jimmy often flirted with notes of this song during his solos. So this is no surprise. He had it on the back burner for many years.
@cnote05 it was the swan song that became midnight moonlight though, it evolved, it was still just the swan song at the time, then the firm needed to rename it when they made it a full song
and its the very end of "swan song" that jimmy pulled the kashmir riff from - jammed with bonzos beat then jonsey responded as it was to be an instremental but then PLANT wrote of being a travler of both TIME & SPACE !
@bianchi1885Guitarist Jimmy Page has stated about Hamemer Of The Gods: I think I opened [the book] up in the middle somewhere and started to read it, and I just threw it out the window. I was living by a river then, so it actually found its way to the bottom of the sea.
According to the band's vocalist Robert Plant about Hammer of the Gods: The guy who wrote that book knew nothing about the band. I think he'd hung around us once. He got all his information from a guy who had a heroin problem who happened to be associated with us. The only thing I read was the "After Zeppelin" part, because I was eager to get on with the music and stop living in a dream state
xxmaxexstreamxx the guy who wrote Hammer of the Gods was Zeppelin’s road manager Richard Cole, and even after all the animosity he was still on the guest list at the 2007 show at the 02!!
@allmightymouse Yes it did. I didnt know this was a Zeppelin tune until now. Funny thing, I bought the Firms albumand right away said that this cant be them its too Zeppelin. Cool song!
Saw The Firm play this live after it was polished up. I must say it stole the whole freaking show. You could tell Jimmy was so proud that His Swan Song was finally finished. Im sure Bonzo and JPJ would of made it a better band, but I must say that Chris Slade and Tony Franklin did one hell of a job filling in. And though nobody could beat Plant, Paul Rodgers did a pretty good job trying to fill Roberts shoes. To bad YT doesn't have any good vids of this song live once The Firm got it together.
Jimmy gave this song to Paul because it was never really finished by Zeppelin. And yes, it was originally called "Swan Song". I don't have ALL the facts. Hell; you're on the internet anyway, just look it up! Let's all get our facts straight! Duh...........
Gee Whiz, the lead guitar in the Firm turned out to be a little known guitarist from an obscure band that sold 4-5 albums. He was lucky enough to actually land this gig and lends this song, probably stolen from Willie Nelson, to Kevin Bacon who played drums and sure enough they put it on the last track. So is it too cool for the Firm? Nah, its just cool enough. Please don't call names as we are all here to enjoy the history of Zeppelins music, not to bait one another into being...well you know.
Well Jimmy does take awhile to finish a piece of music. You know I wonder if he ever really finished what he was planning for the Deathwish II soundtrack because well we have a whole brand new Deathwish film that could get a sequel.
I love the way Jimmy throws little extra beats in that you don't expect...he truly is "The Masrer"....
Always liked this song when it was released with the Firm. Kind of cool to hear John Bonham and John Paul Jones playing on it.
No lie!
JPJ doesn't play on it.
@@rodrossi9749 JPJ is playing bass.

His sound is so heavy on those drums. Always easy to spot Bonzo lol
It literally would've been sacrilege to put another drummer in John's place and go on as "Led Zeppelin".
Because he played just behind the beat
He put the lead in Led Zeppelin
And listen to how tight he is with JPJ!
Love this stuff. Its like finding gold. Long live zeppelin

Jimmy page is my favorite guitarist of all time but no dude the firm was awful.
This is the swan song!
Ahh Bonzo you never dissapoint, sounds so groovy with Jonesy n Bonzo!
great song. Even though I like The Firm's version, there is something about Bonzo's drums- he has an incredible presence, no one else like him!
Been one of fav's for almost 30 yrs!!
Wow. Had no idea this existed!! Thanks. What a song, one of my favs.
Led Zeppelin could put out another 3 or 4 albums with just instrumental songs, I’m loving them. JIMMY just do it!
This is NOT The Firm people. It is an unreleased Zeppelin tune that Page decided to record with the Firm years later.
There is just a little pinch of Midnight Moonlight at the very end, I love this song. She was born from the Swan Song ♡
I would have liked this played at my high school graduation as we was walking into the auditorium in place of other music.
