      Agreed! This makes me wonder if this is what I had all growing up. I've struggled with almost every symptom he listed in the video for most of my life, and have spent years trying to get over it. I even went to a few specialists and they just said I had a vitamin D deficiency and that if I took some vitamins it would cure it. Needless to say, that did not work and just made me feel worse.
      I am definitely going to be looking more into this and am grateful to have others who understand the struggle.
      Here's to recovery and learning to enjoy, not fear, food!

      My family always acted like I was the only child who ate this way. And then I came across my boyfriend who is the same way luckily for me because I don’t have to worry about judgement there, and then I saw a video about a guy with this disorder and that’s when I found out it was a disorder and I was like “Get out. There’s no way...”
      I’ve been digging into this ever since.
      And the fact I can probably get help now just means a lot to me and my family considering they’ve been trying yearssssss for me to eat new food. 15 to be exact. 😅😅

    I've suffered my whole life from SED/ARFID. And I want to give everyone who knows some one with ARFID some advice :
    1. Do not under any circumstances make the person feel any pressure to eat something or try to convince them to try some thing! It might be meant nice but it feels so incredibly horrible and painful as the one affected!
    2. Please don't make unessery comments to their eating Habbits. If I can only eat pumpkin in soup then be happy about it but let it be.
    3. Do not say that their "just picky" it's like one of the worst things to say someone with ARFID it's like saying to a fish to just breath on land.

    im 17 and my entire life i've been borderline bullied by people inside my family and out due to my eating circumstances, i feel so much more at ease to find this video and finally know im not the only one and that it's not my fault and is infact an actual eating disorder. my mums always said i had mouth ulcers as an infant and that's the reason i am the "picky eater" i've been my whole life, and your video has taught me that in reality those ulcers will have related food to pain at a very young age, thus developing ARFID and making me cope with it for my entire life. i tried rice today and gagged, nearly threw up, but after doing so i was so proud of myself despite it being plain old rice. im not sure how or if i'll ever overcome this but to my ARFID brothers and sisters out there, know you're not alone and i believe in us all to overcome these psychological chains restricting what we eat ❤️

I am just like I really want to but I can’t I don’t know how and why I just can’t. It’s not my choice it’s just like I can not change it. And they are like I get it I was an picky eater too but I ate smth. AND THEY HAVE OBVIOUSLY NO IDEA HOW IT IS THEN. It’s not like we don’t want to but more like our organism protecting us from this and not letting us to try to eat those things.

      @specialisthypnotherapy6030  3 года назад +6

      ARFID is a 'subconscious' response to food and rarely responds to logical 'willpower'. Somehow (in many ARFID situations) the brain has associated some foods to be as dangerous as lions, tigers, shakes, crocodiles. The logical mind will ALWAYS lose when it tries to overcome this strong survival instinct. However help is available and change is possible.

    I was diagnosed with anorexia and the phycologist said that i'm not mentally anorexic. Just extremely underweight, which is why they automatically assumed I have anorexia. But I never cared about the weight and it's like they're pressureing me to be "more anorexic". It's hard to explain that food is so discusting to me, that I just can't eat it. And end up crying when i'm forced to and have gag reflexes, it makes sense.

    • @specialisthypnotherapy6030
      @specialisthypnotherapy6030  5 лет назад +4

      Thank you for your comment. As you are aware, ARFID is not Anorexia, even though they are both Eating Disorders. ARFID presents as a restricted diet due to an inability to eat foods outside of a small number of 'safe' foods. The key driver of ARFID is an internal (subconscious) fear of eating food. (This includes both new foods, dropped foods and food jagging). ARFID behavior typically does not come from a negative body image; hence the fundamental difference with Anorexia and Bulimia. Seek professional help. Change is possible.

I’m sick of feeling controlled by food and I know I still carry lots of pent up feelings from incidents caused by my “picky eating”. Sometimes just sitting at a dinner table sets off the same alarm bells in my head that go off around food, even if there’s not food at the table. I'm glad the video was beneficial for you. Often when we make progress and then a stressful situation occurs (physical sickness, emotional upheaval, etc), the mind reverts to a previous 'safe' pattern of behaving. At times like this it is good to remember that if you have made progress once, you can do it again. (And even though you think you are back to 'square one', you are in fact in a different place). And often making the change again requires less effort than the first time. Specialist Hypnotherapy provides ARFID Therapy internationally via Skype/Facetime/Zoom.

    This video has answered 22 years of questions, thank you. I honestly wouldn't wish arfid on my worst enemy, this is single handedly the reason I avoid relationships, vacations, all sorts. It's even got to the point where when going on vacation, we had to bring a toaster because we weren't sure if any of my "safe" foods would be available and plain toast was one of them. I really hope to recover from this one day,

    I am 20 and I have been struggling with ARFID for as long as I can remember. I have always felt alone with this and have felt so embarrassed for so long. Now that I can put a name to this and can see the plentiful amount of people in the comments whom I can relate to, I feel significantly better about myself and can finally start to work my way out of this. I can’t thank you enough for this video and the many questions it has answered. THANK YOU

    For someone who becomes make fun of for "not liking any food" or saying "it's all in your head" is such a struggle. I always thought I was just weird. But discovering this disorder and hits every point on how I feel when it comes to eating is a bit of relief on why I act this way. Everytime I go to a gathering, family dinners, or even restaurants I either eat Very Bland Food or I just don't eat at all. My most struggle is when my family says they know the reason why I don't eat certain foods. But what they don't realize what goes through my mind because I judge food by appearance (color, texture, smell, taste,etc.) and it becomes annoying and I feel embarrassed when I go out to eat with friends as my anxiety goes thinking there will be nothing on the menu that I would like. I finally have something that explains my behavior throughout my whole life!

    So many foods I can't eat, so many rules and restrictions. I can't even eat pizza because I hate melted cheese.

    This video was incredible. I have been suffering from being a "picky eater" as long as I can remember and this anxiety has transferred to basically every aspect of my life. Recently I found out that there was a name for it and it was treatable, and this video brought tears to my eyes because I have never seen my obsessive behaviors explained and I finally felt like I'm not crazy. This stuff has been haunting me for almost 18 years now, I'm underweight and have also been having frequent anxiety attacks, which don't happen related to food but I think could have originated from this part of my life. I'm very lucky to have a supportive family that helps me through this, and though they were very strict and forced me to eat when I was younger, they now respect my limits but try their best to encourage me to eat healthy.
    Sorry for the long comment, but this made me very emotional, to see that I'm not the only one who understands what it's like to have food dictate the way you live. It's the first time it's happened. Thank you for posting this ❤️

Many clients say to me that after ARFID therapy they also feel less anxious in other parts of their lives. Help is available. I'm trying to get a diagnosis on this, but it's so difficult. The doctors never call us back, I got a blood test done and we're supposed to be called when our appointment to get a diagnosis is but they never call and it has been a few weeks. Every other day I switch from thinking I'm getting better to worse and I just don't know if I'll ever even get the treatment I need. I know this is what I have, I just hope to God that this process goes faster because it almost is worse knowing what the problem is and having no control, no ability to fix it.

      Thank you for being honest and for reaching out. It may feel like you have no control, but that is just the current 'you' looking at the past 'you', and believing nothing can change for the good. People recover from eating disorders, people recover from ARFID... every day. Not superhumans... not special people... but normal genuine people facing the challenge of their minds being stuck in a particular way of thinking. By reaching out for help, you are taking back control, bit by bit. Keep reaching out, keep seeking help. You are stronger than you think, and change is possible.

Now that I'm older i do eat a bigger selection of food still no vegetables and chicken smh.. I just want to be able to swallow a vegetable! Either i throw up right away or chew it up until it's time to swallow and it stays in my mouth. I want to swallow the food i really do but i can't and that's what pisses me off. Im tough strong i can make myself do anything except for something so easy as swallowing food.that's the hardest thing in the world...now i have an 8yr old daughter and she's been showing signs of afrid. She eats waaaaayyy better than i do honestly i wish i was her but who am i to make her eat veggies when i can't. I make her a plate with things on it that i don't eat. I can't force her to. I’m crying seeing so many people out there like me 😭😭
    For the longest time I thought I was just some weird kid that refused to eat “normal” foods like the others. My family has been stubbornly trying to make me eat different food for 15 years but only to constantly fail (I began eating this way when I was 4, have been like this ever since and I’m currently 19). They constantly pressured me to eat better because they were concerned I would get health problems in the future. But all their pressuring did to me was make me more stressed and anxious (I also have general anxiety disorder so my family and I would just blame it on that). Now with the virus lifted I can live on campus but one of my fears is being judged by college students about my eating habits... I don’t want them to ask me why I don’t eat any vegetables, fruit, or meat except bacon, lol. For the longest time I’ve only eaten mac and cheese, buttered noodles, cheese pizza, bread, certain breakfast foods, and desserts. That’s it. My tastes in drinks are also very picky. Soon it won’t be anymore 👋🏻
    When I learned about this disorder earlier today I told my dad, and others, and they all agreed the symptoms fit my food behaviors and I’m gonna go get an official diagnosis in August when I can to see for sure.
    Finally I can get the help I need! And I finally have a possible explanation as to why I am the way I am!

    "and forcing someone to try new food only makes matters worse"
    Can confirm, i had a teacher in 2nd grade who let the class do some cooking, and afterwards she let the class eat it for lunch.
    I told her that I was alright, and didn't want any, and she didn)t take that so great.
    she kept me inside all lunch and practically forced me to eat it, meanwhile i was having a full on mental breakdown sobbing my heart out and wanting to curl up into a corner and dissapear.
    most of my classmates either thought i was weird for having a panic attack over food, my friends tried to comfort me after the incident, and while i did eventually eat some of it (it didn't even taste that bad i think) *i didn't try any new foods for...several years*

    I’ve felt for my whole entire life that I was different. Nobody was like me, I was the odd one out in every single situation.
    ARFID has given me the most stress I have ever felt in my life so now that I can give it a name and not be looked at like I am different, I am truly thankful. Throughout my life I have been forced to eat stuff when I don’t want too. I have had food stuffed in my face because nobody would realise I don’t want it, I would rather starve. So being put through the mental challenges of being 5, being shouted at by an adult with food stuffed in my face by them and me not having the confidence to stand up and say no in front of everybody did not help.

I always feel embarrassed and worried going anywhere because I know I can have fun withought dealing with what I can there. And I always feel super embarrassed sitting at the table at Christmas dinner with my plate of door with barely anything on it, I just feel everyone’s judging me. It’s nice that my friends care and ask if I’m ok because I hadn’t eaten anything at their house for the whole day but I feel really bad turning down the foods their parents offer me. Today was the day I finally clicked on this video, and I matched to. Every. Single. One.
    I can’t explain how elated I am to know once and for all that this IS real. That I’m not overdramatizing or faking it. Thank you so much for this wonderful and educational video!

    Since I was 15 I have wondered what was wrong with me! Never thought I had a eating disorder because I'm not TRYING to loose weight. But whenever I try to eat I panick and start crying and when I do eat anyway I regret it and feel like throwing up. I love the feeling of hunger and I like the IDEA of food but not to eat it...
    I love candy, icecream and cakes and I love fruit and berries and fresh vegetables with LOTS of vinegar. Meat is the hardest to eat, or anything salty. Warm food is harder than cold foods. I often imagine that the food I'm eating is bad. Bread is moldy, milk is sour, meat is rotten etc even tho it isn't.
    But my greatest problem is that even the foods I like I stay away from eating for as long as possible. I eat maybe 3 times every 4 days. And I'm getting really weak. I barely get out of bed if I dont have to so I don't really lose weight but I am ALWAYS hungry.

    Thank you for the video. I always knew the issues I had and why from my late teens. 30 odd years later and still I have little improvement. Oddly I managed to try some fruits that many years ago I wouldn't have been able to. But, for example, can only eat certain varieties of strawberry, if they're too hard, I can't eat them. Tried Apples, but after a few bites I start to feel that I NEED to reach! But the worst and hardest thing is having to hide it due to the embarrassment! For over 45 years I've eaten nothing but Sausages or Fish and chips for teatime! Think I'm past caring about changing now! Good to know I'm not the only one suffering from this though. Thought I was mad or something! Just knowing it's not just me is enough. Thank you! Btw, the video is a brilliant explanation for those who don't know anything about it.

      Childhood trauma is a common trigger for ARFID. Protective instincts created in the mind around the time of the trauma continue to 'fire' long after the incident is past, and long after the behaviour is appropriate. It is possible to change these automatic subconscious instinctive responses. You are welcome to reach out for our ARFID Therapy information pack.

      Change is possible. My oldest client was 78, with this person being able to explore previously non safe foods at the end of the first session. ARFID is predominately a fearful pattern in the mind that has been learned and strenghened over time. This pattern can be unlearned in a short period of time with the right therapy.

I always thought I was strange for not eating “normal” foods and I have a fear of trying new foods. I always eat very similar things every day, when I was younger I would rather starve instead of eating something new. (I used to be scared of eating chocolate pudding, different spaghetti shapes, ect..) I have always been ashamed for being a ‘picky’ eater and now I’m not sure if it could be something else..

      Fear is often felt in the gut. Sometimes people with ARFID think that they may have IBS or a gut health issue. When the internal fear that drives ARFID is reduced, often gut symptoms are reduced. A restrictive diet may also cause gut health issues, so by being able to calmly explore foods outside of the previous safe range, this can also assist in a more natural gut health balance.

    I have been like this as long as I remember. I remember panicking when someone tried to make me eat new food. I can't go out to eat because I don't know if there will be food I like. That's why I hate going out to eat with friends or colleagues. I also got a health check up and have a lot of nutritional deficits. When I was a child my parents force fed me. I remember sitting for hours on the table crying. From then on it just got worse. I know it won't hurt me to try new food. But I just can't. I also have anxiety and overthink a lot. • @specialisthypnotherapy6030
      @specialisthypnotherapy6030  3 года назад

      Thank you for your comments and for reaching out. ARFID is not Anorexia. The ARFID person is not 'choosing' to avoid food. The ARFID person's inability to eat certain foods (or disinterest in food) is not driven by any issue of weight/conscious goal/or control. The cause of ARFID is predominately an internal instinctive response to a physical or emotional incident (or phase) in the person life (usually occurring under 5 years of age). The mind has associated food with pain/discomfort, or the mind uses control over food for comfort. In both cases, the initial instinctive (childhood) response is continuing to help the 'adult' in a 'childish' way. Professional help can assist your subconscious in letting to of old protective behaviors so you can reconnect calmly with food.

Having to always eat something i stuffed in my pockets away from everyone and feeling so different because i wouldn't be eating pizza with the class. Having to eat outside the mess hall in boyscouts because i had to eat out of a lunch box while everyone else ate what was served. I deal with it now at work and with all my friends and family, especially in the firehouse now where i dont really feel as wierd but i feel left out. This video make me cry. I didnt realize it could be more than just me being a "picky eater" this has taunted me all of my life and it really bothers me. So many opportunities and things in life im scared to take on because of this. I can’t explain to you how much this means to me. I’ve struggled with this since I was 2 and only became apparent when I had my first issues with the dinner ladies and the cafeteria when I was 3, when I started nursery. Since then every school that I had went to, I had to find ways to throw the food from my pack lunch in the bin to show my dinner ladies I had ate it so I can go outside for break, or in another school I would have dinner ladies playing food games with me to help me eat my food. I’ve had terrible relationships with my family because of this and have always felt like a burden for it because I could never eat at christmas, or accept a meal from anyone, or go to restaraunts, or abroad with them, missing out on everything. My mother would constantly try and get me to go to food therapists, but due to me being so controlling as it is it never happened. I’m almost 17 now, I dropped of school when I was 13, because I was dealing with and depression and anxiety, and so teachers would regularly try and group up and talk about them thinking I had anorexia, which made me feel so misunderstood. When I left school I made my self try new foods, by looking at nutrition, having to not eat foods because I enjoyed it but to make myself get passed the gagging which took 4 months each food, the reason I looked at nutrition was because when I was 10-11 I started breaking my foot a lot over nothing, I would just walk and break my foot. And I would always feel sick(due to the smells and when people would eat around me) and the fact I wasn’t eating anything nutritious. And I really just wanted to change and feel normal. I wanted to be able to be at least be open to trying something at a restaurant. My goal was to be able to eat at a table with my family. Now I’ve tried almost every veg and fruit you could think of and can enjoy it, but unfortunately still have issues with smells and with how food is made and who it’s made by. I’ve gotten much better at trying different brands, and not being so strict on one brand. But still can’t accept a meal from anyone, even if it’s as simple as some tinned spaghetti chucked in a saucepan. I cried so much of happy tears when I found out this was a thing, and that there are people who deal with what I been through. I don’t feel so ashamed anymore or as much of a burden. Thankyou so much!

      The ARFID Eating Disorder does not have negative body image as a driver. Often the cause of ARFID is in the early developmental years and the person's conscious mind cannot remember the cause. (ARFID is typically an internal subconscious fear or aversion to food, that in time turns to disinterest). For some of my clients the cause remains unknown, however the ARFID Therapy works equally well whether the cause is known or unknown. Help is available.
