  • Orchestral! I'm pretty vocal about how this isn't my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean there's no such thing as a good orchestral song arranged for YM2612. As the saying goes, Genesis can still do what Nintendoes quite well actually.

    Just when I think I've heard it all for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive, I am reminded again of just how this soundchip can produce certain flavors, Orchestral is exactly one that doesn't come to mind for most on the console, but these composers work magic to make the FM sounds sing like an actual Orchestra, it's incredible. Love the energy on this, RPG and Tactical games are of course the best to work with such flavors, and it was great to see Castlevania: Bloodlines make its appearance in here, love the track choice as that one definitely fit the flow of this mix the best! And even more Konami goodness with Rocket Knight Adventures, It's actually impressive just how good Konami had their sound down, with as many people they've had throughout this era, the sound team truly deserve much more praise.
    And just as the the beginning and flow throughout this mix was spot on and fantastic, absolutely love the ending, the apex of Shining Force 2 with the Final Battle theme, the culmination of all the euphoric energy, tension, build up, all then coming to a heed with the beautiful Beyond Oasis track! Yuzo also absolutely needs more credit and love for that OST, most know him as the energetic dance tune guy for the Mega Drive, but that soundtrack really sounds like him pushing to make the YM2612 sing like an Orchestra. Phenomenal job on this one anosci, even if this kind of genre isn't your cup of tea you certainly still show the prowess of making a remarkable mix here, thank you!

    'Castlevania: Bloodlines' overflows with awesome music. "Iron Blue Intention" is a strong pick, but "Requiem for the Nameless Victims" (simply beautiful) and "Prayer of a Tragic Queen" (amazingly accurate organ and pizzicato strings) are the most orchestral tunes that game has to offer.

      oh yeah there are a ton of great options from this game! I ended up picking the song that flowed best within the mix, instead of trying to include "the most orchestral" selections.
      That said, I ended up using "Requiem for the Nameless Victims" briefly as the intro to GST++MIX #7!

    Amazing job with this one! I love orchestral Genesis music, so it's nice to be exposed to new ones. I was already familiar with tracks 2, 5, 6, and 9, but the rest were either new songs or just new games to me. I've NEVER heard of that first RPG, and I had no clue the music in surging aura was that good!
    Reading the comments, seems the next mix is gonna be another type of orchestral collection? Looking forward to it!

      Always glad to spread awareness of great music! Reading through the comments is a nice way to spot even more game with good music, too.
      and yeah, I make my mixes in themed pairs: one that sticks to the sound limitations of the console (this one / GSTMIX), and one that reaches outside of the console and into remixes/arrangements/alternate versions (the next one / GST++MIX).
      in this case, the theme is "orchestral" but the first mix of the pair focuses on battle music, and the next one will focus town or exploration music.
      there *is* a science behind it all. :P

    I wish Western developers were given a PC-98 or an FM Towns to push the YM2612 soundchip to its limits than GEMS.

    Rocket Knight Adventures and Shining Force 2, two of the best games ever released (for the genesis if nothing else). You have fucking excellent taste! :)

    A bit disappointed no falcom games on this, they knew how to pull out a good FM orchestra sound
    though their mega drive works wouldn't sound as awesome as they did on the PC-98, x68k or the FM Towns (which is surprising, considering the last one also uses the YM2612)

      I wanted to focus on more battle music type stuff for this mix, and then focus on some of the more serene stuff for GST++MIX #7.
      but yeah, you're going to see something from falcom in the next mix.
      "Beautiful Day" (Sorcerian) and "Key of Light" (Ys 3) are two songs in particular that I *really* want to feature, though it's too early to say if they will end up in the final vid!

    GST how could you not included anything from Gauntlet 4?

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  6 лет назад +1

      Oh yeah, there were so many good selections from Gauntlet 4 on my shortlist for this mix, but none of them made it to the final. :(
      I *especially* wanted to include "Sortie", but it just...didn't fit.

      yea that's a weird omission its like omitting ff6 in a snes compilation, but like any compilation, if anything of your liking is missing just listen to it yourself after watching the said video.

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  6 лет назад +1

      in my defense, this isn't intended to be a comprehensive list. Just a small set of orchestral-flavored Genesis songs that flow together nicely, ideally with some inclusions that aren't as well known (like the first track).

    Poking around vgmdb, I think Title ~ Player Phase 4 (Warsong) was composed just by Noriyuki Iwadare.
