- In this BMW R1250 GS crash video, you'll be able to see just how risky it can be to ride a motorcycle off the beaten path in South Africa. The big rock and ruts in this area are nothing compared to the dangers lurking on the road, and this rider learned that the hard way. Don't be fooled by the beauty of this location - there's plenty of danger lurking off the path.

One second it's there, and the next second it's still there. Rocks, man, that's just how they are.
They just never change
I thought you referring to the second bike lying down at 0:38 :D
0:35 Nice motorcycle boots btw
When traveling in new dusty environment it’s always best to leave a gap so that you can see wherethefuck you’re going
But it’s not a proper adventure unless you’re in a group of 20 adv bikes in a row all loaded down with gear tailgating each other.
@@tigerrider6711Yes, they look(ed) so cool and proper.
You said it. But they should be maintaining distance whenever in a group.
Guess their just used to standing up for speed bumps. (I always see the GS guys leaving the office park doing that🤦🏻)
why not, it relaxes your legs and makes the ride over the bumps more comfortable?@@King88_8
@@motolover5697 because the speed bumps leaving our office car park are like a gentle rise that I barely feel on my bike.....?
...most people don't need adventure bikes.... they need to learn how to ride!!!
nothing from the truth...its not the bike its the person on the bike...
Don't play follow the leader, look well ahead and pick your own line. there's a huge amount of clear road there.
I think he did pick his own line. The two riders ahead of him stayed out of the rut and didn't crash.
@@TwoHawksHunting Your literally suppose to play follow the leader and had he done so he would have been fine just like the leader but due to him being less experienced and picking his own line he crashed and lead the person following him astray. You got it all figured out dont ya.
@@nitrocell9287 So if, as you say, 'your' (sic) supposed to follow the leader then why did the second rider also crash? I guess because he was following the guy ahead of him. I have no intention of being led to my doom by anyone else. I ALWAYS pick my own line (which may coincidentally be the same as someone else's) and I ALWAYS leave enough distance between me and the rider ahead to allow me the time to do that. I ride using my own brain, not someone else's.
800gs series is perfect.
if he was alone he wouldn't hit that rock
if he wasnt a bmw rider he would have pulled over and rolled it off the road so noone else hits it either. especially if he knows theres guys riding behind him.
a BMW rider on the other hand, he grabs his camera and films them, leaving the rock where it is.
If you open your eyes you will notice that the first riders of the group followed the path around the ruts and rock the other guys decided to go straight hence they hit the rock . I didn't even notice the rock until it was too late because that wasn't the way the guys were supposed to be riding. All comes down to riding too close to each other in the dust nothing I could have done to avoid this.
How would u kno
@@paradiselost9946 There are so many BMW wannabees out there.
@@johangroovey Well that's not true. You could have hung back and opened the distance between you and the bike ahead.
i never understand why they make such heavy bikes for dirt road….
That's why I keep a little 250 around. It can do that stuff all day long in relative safety. Not the fastest thing on the road, but on dirt the tables are turned, particularly when the track gets snottier.
I don't think it's just about the bike being heavy, it's lack of skill and bad judgement.
because of big ego of the dwarfs
@@HLMM_KE I agree with the lack of skill. I disagree on it "not being the weight of the bike". All that weight contributes to bad things happening when going at the speeds they were doing.
@@olliechristopher467 Yes, weight can contribute to bad things if you lack skill and experience. But lack of skill is number one, lack of experience number two; which leads to bad judgement, and then weight comes in to aggrevate these two.
Why is there a huge rock on the trail?...And why has no one removed it?
And why has no one smoothed out the ruts with a shovel?
He just did remove it
@@ronanrogers4127😂😂😂😂
looks like seasonal roads in the US. Rain and little maintenance make for some huge ruts and rocks hide all over. Just have to be on your toes. Riding in dusty conditions makes it much harder to dodge these things. Had some close calls on my XR600r.
cuz its a road in a rural area , not a highway
Worst problem in group riding is following the bike ahead of you instead on focusing of your ride fundamentals
Like the Baja race crowds all mysteriously standing next to the worse obstacles 😂
Good grief that is a big rock. Not unusual in mishaps, couple of things came together to help make this happen, much to learn from. I hope the rider is o.k. And put on proper gear for your safety.
First, riding on a road like that is not normal.
Second, on a road like that, you have to slow down a little bit.
Third, the gap between bikes on a road like that is too short.
But I can't help it because it's just fun.
Rock and roll
LMAO!
Unstoppable just stopped
A friend of mine went for a trail ride and came across someone who had crashed one of these things at high speed. Dead.
240kg and 150hp on the dirt = a recipe for disaster.
I personally know lots of people who ride GSes and none of them are dead. I also know lots of people who have never ridden a bike in their lives and they are dead. Your logic escapes me. What car/bike/bicycle/horse do you ride? Has anyone ever been killed on one?
There is not too much risk if you know how to drive and circulate at an appropriate speed. In the video, the guy seems to literally choose the worst part of the road to drive on.
All good, glad nobody got hurt. These things happen
Probably singing "Convoy" in his head. 🎼We gotta a mighty convoy trav'lin thru the night. Convoy, Conv-ahhhhhhh… 🎼
Looking at the comments here and I still don't understand why nobody asked why the person filming this didn’t think about moving this massive hazard from the path. This rock is so big and is so out of place for the surrounding environment its hard to believe nobody cared to stop and move it.
Old guys riding 600+ pound motorcycles in the dirt. What could go wrong? Personally, I think the 1200GS is too big and heavy for off road use. There are better, lighter choices.
Clearly they were riding on a road, not off road.
I too hope tbe rider is ok. I came off my e- bicycle the other week and fractured my shoulder and put a hole in my elbow!!! And i was doing about 20kph.
Ah, that's the new GS e-bike then. No wonder you crashed.
the drop is not that bad. hope for the rider speedy recovery.
That's a risky trip to ride that fast in that environment in jeans an sneakers. Could have been much, much worse. Protect yourself guys!
I bet he learn the lesson.
That was hardly fast. Poor riding skills and never follow the guy in front of you and assume he knows what he’s doing. He went right into that rut and hit a baby head when he had completely flat terrain to the left. He should have picked a better line and stayed away from that rut and he never would have crashed.
@@martyllanos73 that bike's poor suspension doesn't help either.
Camera man: big rock in the way here, let me get my camera out.
Exactly what I was thinking. He knew someone was going to hit the rock.
"hold your breath" "horribly wrong" LMFAO
In the Philippines, the rider ahead of you warns you of upcoming bumps and dangers by signaling using feet. I guess they don't have that kind of comradery in other countries.
Not off road. On road yes.
One of my pet peeves is when the next video suggestion comes on while the main subject of the video is still in play.
BMW never met a GS problem that they could not solve by adding another fifty kilos of ballast.
It's actually have decent weight for 1200, AT is not much lighter and have higher cog so most likely GS feels lighter
I guess the distance was too close and the dust also contributed to poor judgement, either way offroad riding is unpredictable and that is what makes it fun. Safe riding!
Thank God he is safe .
I guess that’s what they call it Adventure 😂
It's always helpful when the lead riders point out any threats. Nobody in this video did that which would have saved you from smacking into the rock.
don't ride in ruts when other alternatives are readily available?
"here, lets get ahead of everyone, pull over right next to this large rock, and then film everyone else passing by and lets see if anyone sees the rock..."
theres a reason i ride alone. too many dimwits around.
could have pulled up, and filmed himself MOVING THE ROCK OFF THE ROAD.
nah. lets film me mate stuffing himself up cus hes riding in the dust behind people and assuming its clear...
some mate. would you ride with someone like this?
Whew it’s such a bummer when your GS goes flying like that. Mines got all types of bandaids and repairs from such mistakes. Fortunately it’s usually just the plastics or crash bars that need bending. These bikes really can take a beating and still get you home hope the riders was ok!
Bro I've got a cheap ass chinese shit and I still can't destroy it. (Might fall apart in mid ride though; forks are vibrating like crazy)
Most bikes are good enough to get a beating, let alone the poster child of adventure segment.
But plastics are pain in the ass not gonna lie.
The off road specialists with 300kg bikes and luggage. haha
2 down dam that was a huge rock
Riding about 20-30 yards too close to each other. No time to react to something the guy ahead just avoided. I don't even like riding close on the asphalt. No need. I like to look around so I want reaction time between me and the guy ahead of me and the guy behind me. I've never understood that nut to butt riding formation.
Оператор вот здесь большой камень точно кто-нибудь упадёт. Нормальный человек вот здесь большой камень уберу его, чтобы никто не упал.
So let’s set up to video all these guys and leave a big fucking rock right where the ride by. Makes total sense.
He went straight to the rock
I saw that Rock as soon as it came into focus and could only .... Oooops !! 🙈
The Rock just lying there menacingly 🗿
What I like most is the onslaught of useless comments like, "Bike too heavy, rider can't ride, no situational awareness."
I'd like to see *any* bike hit that rock at that speed in a rut like that and make it out. Unless you're Chris Birch('s level of awesomeness), everybody loses in this scenario.
(But riding too close and accidentally falling into the rut left little time to react for the rock as the fall into the rut probably took away the attention from what was actually in it. Shit happens ;) )
It's a new experience from the Old World, called The Rock Of Ages and once you've learned it you'll never forget it.
Great video, that little drop wasn’t nothing.
When my bike goes over on the trails
I loose blood.
Dramatic 😆
It's 100% rider fault, but for all those saying "the rock was already there". Stop and think for a bit, will you?.
WHERE was that rock?: In a ditch.
The rider "fell" into the ditch, and rather than stopping, tried to get out of it with speed, but it was just deep enough that there was no way he could get out, and ended up eating rock for breakfast. It's the same situation as thin tire bikes with tramway rails. You KNOW you have to cross them at a right angle, but people inevitably cross them at shallower and shallower angles until the wheel snaps into them overpowering their handlebars, and they kiss the ground.
Guy starts recording just besides the rock to see "what could happen?"
Some youtubers do just anything for likes...
Not 1 but 2 rides down.
Please keep it up distance.. that is Ryder quality
i think he learned something that day
...on a day he'd like to forget.
Hi, may I include this in a compilation? It'll be credited and linked back to your channel
Yes no problem
@@johangroovey Thanks
All the mistakes made:
-let’s go buy $25k adv bikes without ever ridden a dirt bike
-let’s go on a group ride with 20 other riders off-road
-let’s ride past our ability to look cool for the camera
Some dude's comment said "rock n roll" lmao
Following way to close.
Damn. He took a different path from the first two riders.
Bummer, luckily that massive bike didnt land on his tennis shoes. Noticed a second rider down behind him... no reason in the world with all that space to be that bunched up. Hope they learned from the crash.
Hey mate, would it be nice to feature your clip in my next episode? Credited of course (watermark and link to your channel).
Sure no problem
Thanks a lot!@@johangroovey
When you get in to a dich, dont brake, full trotle out of it.
When you see a rock, dont go backward, stand up and push your chect over the front and bend your elbows...
This is ridiculus, it was avoidable in so many ways
Wow I can't get my breath back 😂😂😂
Great filming!
MOVE THE ROCK
This could be avoided. Just don't ride in each others dust. there should be very good separation between each rider! I hate riding in groups for this very reason
adv bike marketing approved! lol
Old boy hit a goonie. Heads up!
Poor visibility plus excess speed equals a bad day .
Why did the second rider fall off ?
Not as bad as the guy in California who hit a car battery on the highway - bigger obstacle, four times as fast. Ouch.
me and my son already fell this way , because a same f*cking rock
go ahead, motorcycles have theese risks , but we dont stop riding it
Happy 2024 BOOOOAAAAAR(bmw sound) Fellas
It went horribly wrong same second he decided to buy this kind of bike:D
You're supposed to avoid those.
These wonderfull bikes are way to heavy for the average driver, imo. Thanks for the vid!
That's one way to dismount 😅
Anybody notice TWO bikes went down?
That's correct BMG GS 800 also went down
Anybody notice multiple options of smoother paths to travel ?
When you grab front brake in the dirt
Hello! Could I integrate this video into my future work? Thank you for your answer.
Opps. Just hope nobody was seriously injured. I somehow always think 2 wheels are not the best form of off road travel.
Luckily no one got hurt
@@johangroovey no scratches or bruises thsts the way to go 👍🏾
Then u lack the most fun thing u do in clothes 😂
1 unclothed activities
2 bikes
3 food
4 programming
Either pin it and go faster. Or slow it way down and and enjoy the ride.
Off tarmac, my rule of throttle is to always ride low enough to find more speed when required.
go faster in to the rock?
Unstoppable...
Not adequate bike control skill to keep that heavy bike out of the rut. Going too fast to identify hazards and take evasive action. Wearing the same gear you would wear to ride a scooter. That's a bad 1-2-3. Can only end in disaster.
Ouch. That is not fun! Hope the riders recovered well from it!
Nike sport shoes, for Adventure LOL :D
Lol… he was like let me bump that with my skid plate…
Cool for the video…
He didnt see that 1 kubic meter square rock 😂😂😂
Mph 8
You really did that bro...
So Camera man knows there is a boulder :D maybe he put it there :D
If you go in the rut, the rut owns you.
One reason I sold my GS and bought a KLR650, it won't break the bank when I spill it 😂 unlike that dude 😅
Slowly and Majestically. I don;t ride with others because of the pressure to keep up... or danger of being hit from behind. However, when you dump hard... being alone is dangerous.
These groves are hard to cross I had the same experience 😅😅
Hope you're ok but that was totally avoidable.
Ive seen so many people crash because they follow the person in front.
Hello there! Can I share this video for my youtube edit?I'll credit you with watermark on screen. Thanks in advance. Cheers.
Yes, sure
Follow the leader is fun as kids, but not a good idea on a bike. See your line before you take it. I know everyone is an expert till they take a tumble. But it happens, and hopefully we live to learn the lesson.
A pair of sneakers (Jerry Seinfeld specials 😆) and a pair of levis Jeans as lower protection. Very Lucky someones foot wasn't ripped off!!! Oh theres a big boulder in the track lets hit with the front wheel and see what happens!!!! I see way too many old GS riders taking these bikes off road with similar outcomes. It takes a well trained person to take a 650lb bike and ride it like a dirt bike. Thats why i keep my ass on the road on my sport tourer. Too old to be ripping it round in the dirt. Hope everyone made it home OK !!!
U should be somehow experienced for sure to off-road adv bikes, but definitely not need to be "well trained".
Doing some high speed shit and acrobatics for sure need some knowledge and a lot of exp but for putting around u good
Hey man. All good to feature it? Full credits will be given to you, of course. Thanks! --------------- PS. I edit a bit differently.
Sure thing!
Hey man. I've use it. Thanks for the permission and make sure to drop by and tell me what you think!
Video: 10 Minutes of The Craziest Motorcycle Moments!
Just go for the rock right?
Is the one that crashed really wearing trainers.. ?! And the second one riding so close..
Would have been nice if the Camera man moved the boulder out of the way :D
Was it Engine first?
Wait did the other biker behind also go down ....lots of dust ...0:39
Unfortunately, it did.
Legendary Level Lama
anything above 500cc is overkill on an adventure motorcycle. even most professional rally bikes are 450cc or less.
