  • Using amber and turquoise cabochons to make a silver bezel set chain bracelet.

Thanks a lot Deborah, A lot of people suffer with metal allergies with some jewellery. I made this for myself, wanting something a bit more colourful … somebody said it was a bit feminine, but I don’t care … N

Hi Deborah, been following and straight up copying Nick since I started making jewellery. Silver is actually quite a cheap metal to use for jewellery and the stones aren't precious although beautiful. You should maybe consider a jewellery course and produce yourself some amazing stuff. Before you know it you'll be copying complicated things like Dynamis chain. If you want to smelt your metals and make your own wire etc it can be a real large outlay but if you buy in from cookson to start with you can get producing with the basic tools. I've spent an absolute fortune on stuff but I know this is what I'll be doing from now on. I've put some short videos of my stuff up for Nick to see so you can take a look. Bear in mind that this is my first attempts and I'm getting better all the time. I've been doing this since n spare time as a hobby but I'm taking it up full time and doing a year long course next year in Uni at 57 yr's old. This has all been done with you tube videos and no other input, if I can do it anyone can.👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
P.S. Nick has been a good mate helping with kind words and encouragement, he's a proper good bloke.

@@johnkidd797 Yes you’re right about this-earlier this year I bought Chain Maille Jewelry workshop by Karen Karon(not sure if it was recommended by Nick) and have made a parallel chain weave bracelet with silver rings bought from internet and have been practising a short Byzantine weave to see if I could do it but think I would struggle with the soldering bit. I have all the tools to make simple stuff and made earrings in the past for self and family but I have brain damage following an op and struggle with the patterns but not giving up-just doing these difficult things is actually good for the brain but yeah my skin allergies are why I started in the first place. Do you solder the parrot clasp ring to make it secure? Can the parrot clasp be tumbled without causing damage to it? TIA

Hi Here & There Down Under, thanks for your comment. I’ve never had a problem with the clasps I use called “lobster” from Cooksongold.com here in the uk. I do solder them close to a chain to make them secure, but it is said that you have to be careful not to overheat them. I do put them in a barrel polisher, the only problem can be small shot can get stuck in the mechanism but is easily released with a poke from a pin … all the best … Nick

Omgoodness! Im so glad i found your channel again. I took some time away from YT, and jewelry making. Recently got back into it, after both my brothers got engaged and wanted me to make their wedding rings. Haven't got started on those yet, as theyre still trying to put together some design ideas of what they're looking for. Anyway, i am currently making my daughters matching bracelets, with some tiny gemstone beads. But i have some cabs, and thinking this might be a better option for bracelets. It seems more durable, snd much better design than what i was originally going to go with. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work with us all.

Hi Kat welcome back, good luck with your commissions, something I steer well clear of I rather make excuses why I can’t do it. Making stuff to give away is more my style. Occasionally some people get rather offended when I say I don’t make jewellery to sell and just make stuff for the pleasure of it. My usual reply is “just a happy hobbyist having fun enjoying simple things in life”

Question: Is this a hobby for you or how you make a living?
Is it possible to make a good income as a silversmith?
I realize there are a lot of variables, but, I want to know if it's possible.
I love jewelry, love working with my hands, I have taken classes before a d love it and have a background as a designer, so I have a lot of skills going for me to head in this direction.
The one thing that is really making me hesitant is that it's time consuming and after material costs, it seems like it could be a challenge to make good solid profit?
Thoughts? Maybe this could be a good topic for a video? How to make a living as a silversmith.
    Thank you

Hi mskinetik, for me jewellery making is a hobby and pure pleasure. However a lot of money can be maded as a Silversmith if you get the key ingredients right. For it to work you need to be a bit of an all-rounder, good at designing and making as well as promoting, marketing and selling. I think speed and efficiency comes with practice once you have a product that works batch production is all part of the game. Megan Collins channel is dedicated to being a commercial jeweller and is great for advice and guidance. Also the “Jewelry RV me” channel is a commercial jeweller but mostly enjoys camping.. Everyone needs to start somewhere and sell their first item. Just throw yourself at it. Good luck with it … N

❓❓After watching the entire video, I have one question... Did you use any old kind of wire to create the spacer that raised the turquoise stone in its bezel cup? I only asked this because I know some people will use plastic from old credit cards or whatever since it will be hidden when finished so I was just curious if you used silver wire or some other kind of wire since it was not necessary to solder it in place? Thanks! 👍🙂

    • @Nickscreativestuff
      @Nickscreativestuff  6 месяцев назад

The turquoise did slightly vary in height, so I used silver wire that I can pull through a drawer plate to get an exact thickness for desired spacing. By making unsoldered jump rings for this process it helps prevent the stones from rocking … cheers … Nick

I love my miter jig vise… It really helps to get an even flush cut.. but I also do something extra that a lot of silversmith don’t know to do this; after I file the silver off making it flush, I take one of my handmade sanding paper flat sticks and I will sand the all the extra metal off that you can’t see.. it makes the ends better flush to each other

Ok Nick, ive put a couple of shorts up, one of the unfinished 18k necklace. I forgot what a heavy chunk of a thing it is, ive decided to make it an over the head with no clasp. Making a nice box clasp isnt as easy as it looks, ive tried in silver and while ok i wouldnt use them on my chains, also with the gold value i think a solid soldered link would be safer. This bracelet is beautiful and if i wore jewellry i would wear that myself. I only wear when out at any functions (very rare) in case someone likes and i get an order. My wife is my advertisment as she has more jewellery I've made than anything else.👍

I started on the house and haven't stopped, not as quick as I was before the accident which is frustrating. I was going to start jewellery again in winter but I have 50 tonne of logs coming that'll need bucked and split. I still haven't finished the 18k necklace and that'll be the first job as when finished it'll be over 7 Troy Oz tied up in it. Some person that doesn't mind attention will buy it, I wear a smaller silver version when I rarely go out to market my work. I've been missing your videos bud but I haven't been online as much with everything going on. I'll try to put a small video on my channel of the 18k chain, my channel only has 2 videos of drone stuff. Not exactly exciting or educational.

Hi Karry, thanks again for that it’s really appreciated. It all adds up to potentially being a small income working from home now that I’ve had to give up work due to care demands … appreciate your support … Nick
