Thanks. I mainly put FF12 up on the top spot because of it's battle system. I didn't like micro managing or babysitting team mates during battles, and FF12's battle system gets to a point where I didn't have to do this and my team mates took care of themselves during battles. It's awesome to see them do this.

Well persona 3 and persona 4 is in shin megami tensei universe I think, if you refer to shin megami tensei digital devil saga the answer is yes I've played them but mostly I prefer to persona 3 and persona 4 rather than digital devil saga.
I am just glad Radiata Stories. Rogue Galaxy, and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter got some recognition. They are my favorites of the PS2 generation, despite having played(and enjoyed) Final Fantasy 12, SMT: Noctune, Persona 3 & 4(have yet to beat any of the MegaTen games as I always get stuck at some point.)
Agreed as well! No Megaten games at all in fact... And PS2 was the centerpiece for some of the best Megaten games in the franchise. My personal favorites were SMTIII: Nocturne, and Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. Persona 3 was awesome and the two Devil Summoner games were pretty sweet too. And, aside from Megaten games, The Shadow Hearts series was great too.
Yess finally my favourite game is number one. I spent over 177 hours to beat the game including: complete all side quest, getting max level to all members, collect all the espers, getting the Zodiac's Spear, obtain all rewards, beating the super boss Yiazmat & Omega MK XII that giving me pain in the ASS!! Love the battle mechanics & best graphics on ps2 too. Hoping they were to make a remaster... :)

In my opinion.. There is 3 top aspect that rpg should have.. 1. Good music 2. Good story and deep hero's character 3. Good gameplay And in my opinion ffx is better than ffxiii
What's good about FF games is that every entry in the series marks a new style and rpg experience. 7 was in 3D, 8 was a realistic love story, 9 was a nod to the old era, 10 spoke for the first time, 11 went on line, 12's battle system was in real time, and 13 (love it or hate it) is doing it's own thing. Personally, when it comes to the, story, 10 is the best out of all FF games, but since the majority of my time while playing FF games is spent constantly in battle and leveling up instead of advancing the story line, I gave the top to FF12 because of this. Looking forward to seeing what FF15 has to offer.
915nabi Unfortunately a lot of fans seem to forget this, even though the franchise's formula is that there is no formula. So when one game is different, everyone cries and whines but neglects the fact that it was made different like all the past games in the series.

There are 2 things I hate about FFXII..weak characters' depth and weak story. Everything else is great. My top PS2 JRPG would be ToTA and then FFXII. Actually fck that. 1.ToTA 2.DQVIII 3.R Galaxy 4.Persona 4 5.FFXII FFX would be down there but still in my top 10.
Twelve was a great game in terms of gameplay and scale but it had glaring issues, needless to say the story wasn't too great and the characters weren't interesting for the most part, but possibly the most game breaking of all was the completely unexplained sidequests and synthesis system that are near impossible to complete on your own without a game guide
XII had the worst main character in FF history, besides Fran I can't think of anything good about it, probably one of the few RPGs I quit before finishing because it was so boring

Achille12345 front mission doesn't make into many people's top 10 because is probably too short in general while disgaea becomes more or less a grind fest. However the disgaea series has very good replay value and it will last you for a long long time, you can spend hundreds and hundreds of hours playing the game and still not uncover all it's content which is a big + for the disgaea games

I think u are over attracted by Square enix and FF series. Not bad , but not the best neither. You should try some Atlus game like Dgital Devil saga, or Nocturne, Personal 3, 4, Devil summoner... And how about Valkyrie profile? :)) To tell the truth, the FF XII has a good start up, but then , it become really tiring and annoying like a MORPG. Flashy graphic does not mean high class. If sticking to the FF, I like the X over it.
My favorite rpg games come from BioWare... not SquareEnix. I didn't put any of BioWare's games in this video when I made it because they're not ps2 games.
I think Shin Megami Tensei games have dark aesthetic and overtones, me personally I like FF12 World much better. However I recently started playing Strange Journey and the setup in that game is amazing.
Legend of Dragoon wasn't even that great a game. It was an attempt to rip-off *ahem* borrow mechanics and story devices from all of the popular JRPGs of the day. They delivered something respectable, but only just.

I can't believe Legaia 2: dual saga didn't even make the list. It makes the top 5 without any argument at all. It would even be in the running for top 3. It had battle system, soundtrack, story, decent character development, mini games, lots of side quests, excellent art style. Yeah, the first one was a bit better, but the first one also beats virtually every ps2 rpg as well.

Well XII was well playable, but the story was such boring, that only the sidequests rly interested me... But this whole automized (is that even correct? my english sucks :D) Battlesystem took much of the unique ff feeling like you had it in vii, viii or x-1 (didnt play x-2, wont get into it just saw the first 20min or sth, is it worth playing??). Not sure if i will play the 13-Series things anytime, maybe if i get a cheap ps3 :D
for me personally i find x2 good but its not as good as the other older ones but i still like it, it has more of an ff feel than 12, 13 of 13-2 so its really up to you. im not even going to get started on my hatred for the new ones, it would be like an essay haha

I don't like digging around in a over complicated menue and battle system in order to do stuff, as most jrpg's are of this nature. Games like the Tales series have a battle system similar to FF12's, but FF12 really nailed it, and that's one of the reason why I gave FF12 the top spot
Matilda Camisa I actually have played it before, still do. First game I ever played. Still holds a nostalgic place in my heart to this day, but the logical side of my brain says 2 is better.
I played Shadow of the Colossus and still have that game. It was a lot of fun. Didn't care for riding the horse though, but the boss fights were fun. =)
Didn't think much of it either. The graphics looked really fuzzy, the main character felt like another Tidus and the fight system was "Okay". The story flitted around all over the place. Might have been better if it had focused on Ashe with Balthier and Fran as side characters, but as it stood there was just nothing to grip me.
the music in dq8 is phenomenal.. rogue galaxy still has some nice pieces but deciding which world i like better is hard. im on a second play through of rogue galaxy at the moment i clocked in at 160 hours and as for DQ8 I've completed that at least 20 times there both so wonderful :)
I am replaying FFXII right now since I got my hands on an international copy. The original game didn't really hook me. I probably got 95% done with the story and gave up because of boredom. I really enjoyed FFX and it's one of my favorite FF games. 9 and 5 are also on the top for me.

I've never played any of the Shadow Hearts games, so I don't know about them and didn't put any game on the list that I didn't play. If I have time, maybe I will play more ps2 rpg games and re-do the list a bit.
I'm not surprised that it didn't make the list, since it kinda got forgotten about in the shuffle of time. But I would have put the original dot hack series some place on this if I was doing this. It's one of the most engaging jrpgs I have ever played.
I've never played a dot hack game before, so they're not on the list, but I may re-do the list because many people like yourself mentioned cool games that i've yet to play.

FFXII was amazing. I constantly fiound myself returning to the game even though I didn't like most final fantasy games. It has one of the best battle systems in an RPG.

I don't even care for the story tbh, the game is so much fun to play, the level up, the huge amount of sidequest and secret bosses, the weapons.. and a battle system that NEVER bores me. i have more than 400 hours in it and i don't seen to get tired.
I loved ff12 for the fact that it "could literally play itself." During most rpg games I play, I have to micromanage or babysit my team mates when they get into trouble, but FF12 (and the Tales series) allow me to plug in commands that have my team mates take care of themselves (and me) and fight on their own when we get in trouble. Not all games are the same, but it's nice to play games with battle systems like FF12 and the Tales series. Anyway, its all good, they're all just games after all.
Romancing SaGa is my literal favorite JRPG of all time. It's pretty different from a lot of JRPGs due to the nonlinearity, but it's excellent if you can get on its wavelength.
My favorite was FF12 but I defiantly feel you on Romancing Saga I spent days on that game! So many different narratives. That series needs a Resurgence and not just mobile games ( that's were series go to die!)

now with all the emulators out there, has anyone ever actually taken the time to play FF X-2. i am glad this guy mentioned it. when it came out original, i played the crap out of it. i agree i had to get over the Charlies Angels theme but i thought X-2 was done so much better than FF X(my most hated FF title) and so much more organized. it even brought back classic job system with a fresh take. the ending was well down and a let down like FF X's ending...

Rogue galaxy is a great game and all, but DC2 clearly has it beaten. I mean it's one of the greatest single player experiences of all time. So much learning occurs throughout that game without much direction. You get a few hints here and there but it's up to the player to discover the endless hours of adventure. It is personally my golden standard. Not to take anything away from rogue galaxy of course.
On PS2 nothing beats Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant IMO, graphically it looks a lot like FFX but with a very much more mature theme, the combat system and the way to learn abilities is unparalleled, the bestiary is huge, lot of sidequests, great maps and soundtrack. If you never tried it then don't lose any more time, Shadow Hearts 1 and 3 are pretty good too, but the 2nd one is on another level
the characters and environment style of this game reminds me a lot of ff9, it's probably inspired by it.. i'm gonna give this a try, it seems beautiful!
It's a decent list, I personally would leave out Star Ocean, Breath of Fire & Grandia ...I found those games to be lackluster. I'm assuming you don't consider Tactical RPG's as true RPG's? Otherwise you'd be missing Eternal Poison, Soul Nomad, Disgaea etc. (which is fine I guess). I would have included Shadow Hearts, Ar Tonelico, Romancing Saga, and Valkyrie Profile 2...Also there's Baldur's Gate 2 or Champions of Norrath unless its strictly JRPG.

Well persona 3 and persona 4 is in shin megami tensei universe I think, if you refer to shin megami tensei digital devil saga the answer is yes I've played them but mostly I prefer to persona 3 and persona 4 rather than digital devil saga.

I am just glad Radiata Stories. Rogue Galaxy, and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter got some recognition. They are my favorites of the PS2 generation, despite having played(and enjoyed) Final Fantasy 12, SMT: Noctune, Persona 3 & 4(have yet to beat any of the MegaTen games as I always get stuck at some point.)
FFX should be number one by far, but good list man.
+Hans Bargsted --X is where the series turned emo, XII is much better in my opinion. X is the most overrated of all FF series (even more than VII).
I have played all FF games since I was a kid.. X and 13 are the worst.
Best RPG's of PS2 for me are Champions Of Norrath and Champions Return To Arms, amazing and underrated games.
Matheus Navarro , they are not the BEST RPGs, but, yes, they ARE criminally underrated, as is Beyond Good and Evil.

Agreed as well! No Megaten games at all in fact... And PS2 was the centerpiece for some of the best Megaten games in the franchise. My personal favorites were SMTIII: Nocturne, and Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. Persona 3 was awesome and the two Devil Summoner games were pretty sweet too.
And, aside from Megaten games, The Shadow Hearts series was great too.

Yess finally my favourite game is number one. I spent over 177 hours to beat the game including: complete all side quest, getting max level to all members, collect all the espers, getting the Zodiac's Spear, obtain all rewards, beating the super boss Yiazmat & Omega MK XII that giving me pain in the ASS!! Love the battle mechanics & best graphics on ps2 too. Hoping they were to make a remaster... :)

There is 3 top aspect that rpg should have..
1. Good music
2. Good story and deep hero's character
3. Good gameplay
And in my opinion ffx is better than ffxiii
What's good about FF games is that every entry in the series marks a new style and rpg experience. 7 was in 3D, 8 was a realistic love story, 9 was a nod to the old era, 10 spoke for the first time, 11 went on line, 12's battle system was in real time, and 13 (love it or hate it) is doing it's own thing. Personally, when it comes to the, story, 10 is the best out of all FF games, but since the majority of my time while playing FF games is spent constantly in battle and leveling up instead of advancing the story line, I gave the top to FF12 because of this. Looking forward to seeing what FF15 has to offer.
915nabi Unfortunately a lot of fans seem to forget this, even though the franchise's formula is that there is no formula. So when one game is different, everyone cries and whines but neglects the fact that it was made different like all the past games in the series.
This list might make me buy some of these games, as I'm currently not so attracted to most(!) of the new-gen-games, be it PS3/XboxOne/WiiU/PS4. I can't explain why, it's just my feeling... :-/

Twelve was a great game in terms of gameplay and scale but it had glaring issues, needless to say the story wasn't too great and the characters weren't interesting for the most part, but possibly the most game breaking of all was the completely unexplained sidequests and synthesis system that are near impossible to complete on your own without a game guide
if you like the FF12 Autofight you may try Summoner 2. Old, underrated, but the styl is very similar.
XII had the worst main character in FF history, besides Fran I can't think of anything good about it, probably one of the few RPGs I quit before finishing because it was so boring

#6 Shining Force Neo (been a fan since Shining In The Darkness, so biased) [love slashing mobs]
#7 Okami [girlfriend friendly game; very pretty game]
#8 Drakenguard (honorable to 2) [replay battles just to use the weapon effects]
#9 Bard's Tale [hilarious game that makes fun of itself thereby a satire of RPG's]
#10 Radiata Stories [recruiting is very fun actually, especially after a few years when you've forgotten the clues]

#12 Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 (honorable to 2)

Achille12345 front mission doesn't make into many people's top 10 because is probably too short in general while disgaea becomes more or less a grind fest. However the disgaea series has very good replay value and it will last you for a long long time, you can spend hundreds and hundreds of hours playing the game and still not uncover all it's content which is a big + for the disgaea games

To tell the truth, the FF XII has a good start up, but then , it become really tiring and annoying like a MORPG. Flashy graphic does not mean high class. If sticking to the FF, I like the X over it.
My favorite rpg games come from BioWare... not SquareEnix. I didn't put any of BioWare's games in this video when I made it because they're not ps2 games.

Legend of Dragoon is a ps1 rpg, and the list is only meant for ps2 rpgs.
Legend of Dragoon wasn't even that great a game. It was an attempt to rip-off *ahem* borrow mechanics and story devices from all of the popular JRPGs of the day. They delivered something respectable, but only just.

I can't believe Legaia 2: dual saga didn't even make the list. It makes the top 5 without any argument at all. It would even be in the running for top 3. It had battle system, soundtrack, story, decent character development, mini games, lots of side quests, excellent art style. Yeah, the first one was a bit better, but the first one also beats virtually every ps2 rpg as well.

Well XII was well playable, but the story was such boring, that only the sidequests rly interested me... But this whole automized (is that even correct? my english sucks :D) Battlesystem took much of the unique ff feeling like you had it in vii, viii or x-1 (didnt play x-2, wont get into it just saw the first 20min or sth, is it worth playing??). Not sure if i will play the 13-Series things anytime, maybe if i get a cheap ps3 :D
for me personally i find x2 good but its not as good as the other older ones but i still like it, it has more of an ff feel than 12, 13 of 13-2 so its really up to you.
im not even going to get started on my hatred for the new ones, it would be like an essay haha

I dont expect another ff vii from it but thats not even what i want to have.

FF12 is in the top spot because during the game I reached a point where I didn't have to micro-manage or baby sit the other characters fighting with me, especially when it came to healing each other. I don't like digging around in a over complicated menue and battle system in order to do stuff, as most jrpg's are of this nature. Games like the Tales series have a battle system similar to FF12's, but FF12 really nailed it, and that's one of the reason why I gave FF12 the top spot

I actually have played it before, still do. First game I ever played. Still holds a nostalgic place in my heart to this day, but the logical side of my brain says 2 is better.

I played Shadow of the Colossus and still have that game. It was a lot of fun. Didn't care for riding the horse though, but the boss fights were fun. =)

You missed out because it really picks up after that! One of my favorites on the system as well. Put almost 200 hrs into it!
Didn't think much of it either. The graphics looked really fuzzy, the main character felt like another Tidus and the fight system was "Okay". The story flitted around all over the place. Might have been better if it had focused on Ashe with Balthier and Fran as side characters, but as it stood there was just nothing to grip me.
Well, it is definitely one of the most debated successes/failures in the series,but it is way better than ffx-2 or any game afterwards.
the music in dq8 is phenomenal.. rogue galaxy still has some nice pieces but deciding which world i like better is hard. im on a second play through of rogue galaxy at the moment i clocked in at 160 hours and as for DQ8 I've completed that at least 20 times there both so wonderful :)
IMO dark cloud 2 should be the #1 just because of its awesome story, upgrades and so many things to do. It's like the perfeect rpg game of its time

I am replaying FFXII right now since I got my hands on an international copy. The original game didn't really hook me. I probably got 95% done with the story and gave up because of boredom. I really enjoyed FFX and it's one of my favorite FF games. 9 and 5 are also on the top for me.

I've never played any of the Shadow Hearts games, so I don't know about them and didn't put any game on the list that I didn't play. If I have time, maybe I will play more ps2 rpg games and re-do the list a bit.
I'm not surprised that it didn't make the list, since it kinda got forgotten about in the shuffle of time. But I would have put the original dot hack series some place on this if I was doing this. It's one of the most engaging jrpgs I have ever played.
I've never played a dot hack game before, so they're not on the list, but I may re-do the list because many people like yourself mentioned cool games that i've yet to play.
Extremely different from my list, (Final Fantasy XII and Rogue Galaxy are about all we have in common here) but that just proves how much rpg goodness was available on the PS2.

FFXII was amazing. I constantly fiound myself returning to the game even though I didn't like most final fantasy games. It has one of the best battle systems in an RPG.
I haven't played many of these. Looking around for PS2 rpg's I can go play. I think i'll be playing a lot of these. Awesome to see FFXII on the top of the list, great game :)

I don't even care for the story tbh, the game is so much fun to play, the level up, the huge amount of sidequest and secret bosses, the weapons.. and a battle system that NEVER bores me. i have more than 400 hours in it and i don't seen to get tired.
Star Ocean Till the End of Time and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix are my favorites. Anyone who hasn't played those yet I recommend that they should.

I loved ff12 for the fact that it "could literally play itself." During most rpg games I play, I have to micromanage or babysit my team mates when they get into trouble, but FF12 (and the Tales series) allow me to plug in commands that have my team mates take care of themselves (and me) and fight on their own when we get in trouble. Not all games are the same, but it's nice to play games with battle systems like FF12 and the Tales series. Anyway, its all good, they're all just games after all.
Romancing SaGa is my literal favorite JRPG of all time. It's pretty different from a lot of JRPGs due to the nonlinearity, but it's excellent if you can get on its wavelength.
My favorite was FF12 but I defiantly feel you on Romancing Saga I spent days on that game! So many different narratives. That series needs a Resurgence and not just mobile games ( that's were series go to die!)
Actually, the newest game (SaGa Scarlet Grace) came out on Vita in Japan just a few weeks ago. It's actually a pretty popular series over there!

I mainly liked the battles system in FF12 just as I like the battle system in the Tales series. In these games, I don't have to micro manage or baby sit my characters. They fight on their own and it's awesome to see this in a game.
now with all the emulators out there, has anyone ever actually taken the time to play FF X-2. i am glad this guy mentioned it. when it came out original, i played the crap out of it. i agree i had to get over the Charlies Angels theme but i thought X-2 was done so much better than FF X(my most hated FF title) and so much more organized. it even brought back classic job system with a fresh take. the ending was well down and a let down like FF X's ending...

Rogue galaxy is a great game and all, but DC2 clearly has it beaten. I mean it's one of the greatest single player experiences of all time. So much learning occurs throughout that game without much direction. You get a few hints here and there but it's up to the player to discover the endless hours of adventure. It is personally my golden standard. Not to take anything away from rogue galaxy of course.
On PS2 nothing beats Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant IMO, graphically it looks a lot like FFX but with a very much more mature theme, the combat system and the way to learn abilities is unparalleled, the bestiary is huge, lot of sidequests, great maps and soundtrack. If you never tried it then don't lose any more time, Shadow Hearts 1 and 3 are pretty good too, but the 2nd one is on another level

the characters and environment style of this game reminds me a lot of ff9, it's probably inspired by it.. i'm gonna give this a try, it seems beautiful!
It's a decent list, I personally would leave out Star Ocean, Breath of Fire & Grandia ...I found those games to be lackluster.
I'm assuming you don't consider Tactical RPG's as true RPG's? Otherwise you'd be missing Eternal Poison, Soul Nomad, Disgaea etc. (which is fine I guess). I would have included Shadow Hearts, Ar Tonelico, Romancing Saga, and
Valkyrie Profile 2...Also there's Baldur's Gate 2 or Champions of Norrath unless its strictly JRPG.

Great list. Most of these were on my personal list as well. I was fond of the Dot Hack games. Not that popular, but I enjoyed them.
I kind of find it funny how people would send death threats just because you like a game they don't.
The people that dislike FFXII tend to be westerners who dislike anything that differs from the formulaic.
