Brazil also offers citizenship by birth
In New Zealand you have to have Permanent Residency or be a New Zealand citizen.
Only children that have parents that are recognized refugee status by New Zealand Immigration via the UN agency or other recognized agencies obtain NZ citizenship. NZ only takes in 1500 refugees a year. Asylum is not easily obtained. Your pregnancy care as a non citizen will be paid by you.

Nanelle, thanks for the detailed information you provided. However with respect to Canada, IRCC try to prevent abuse by use of "processing time". When a country is red flagged the processing time for visitors visas for their national is always very long. There was a time last year when processing time for visitors visa from Nigeria was over 700 days. As you know any pregnant applicant for visitors visa will have given birth before their application is processed. I know this, as I'm an immigration consultant in Canada.

Nice video. Correction: In the U.S., you can only file for your parents' green card when you're 21 years old; you cannot file for their citizenship. Your parents must first obtain green card status before they can apply for citizenship.

In Portugal you can get the citizenship as long as one of the parents have a residence permit. My friend’s daughter got her citizenship like that. The mother didn’t even have residence permit, she got it through the daughter who was born in Portugal. Only the dad had residence permit previously.

In brazil yuur child become automatic citizen while the parents gets permanent resident, and with Brazil passport you can travel to over 135 countries without visa including UK and Canada and top European countries.
This is one of the reasons why I love brazil....I was in sao paolo 2014...lovely people, very friendly and accommodating.

Citizenship is a stepping stone for freedom in many things. If your Nigerian or Ghana passport is strong people from other countries will grab your passport and invest in your country. If Ghana football players or somebody like Anthony Joshua didn't have Citizenship of the country they were born in, how will the get that much wealth to invest in their African countries. Thatd why dual citizenship is good for Africans in diaspora.

I think it’s better to get the visa first before pregnancy, or just go for your interview no later than 3 months pregnant because I don’t know if they run medical testing for that visa

This depends on the visa officer that attends to you, sometimes they grant visa even when they know you are pregnant, skme other times they don't...its not a yes or no answer

Not true for Tanzania, 1 of the parent has to be a Tanzanian and also do not recognize dual citizenship. I gave birth to my son there but he didn't get the citizenship. He has his Belgian citizenship but will be nice to obtain his Tanzanian. Hope Tanzania changes their law in the near future.

Your son is already an American citizen because you are. Have the mother go to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria and report the birth. As long as you’re on the birth certificate it will not be a problem.

Dear Nanelle i appreciate your informative and educative piece. However, i am a bit worry now about the craze for Africans to migrate and seek citizens in European and other foreign countries while only few foreigners even brother to visit Africa much less of obtaining the citizenship. While i understand the reason for this rat race no thanks to bad governance and poverty in the land. I said i am a bit worry because we are setting agenda for another form of slavery and devaluation of self esteem. It's over 200 years that Black or Africans have been citizens of America tell me what's the status of a typical Africa America in the US? Not a good story except few cases we call outliers in data science or statistics. That brings to the question what do we do? if African do not want to be perpetual second or third class global citizen i think whoever has the opportunity to migrate abroad should make it as cardinal goal to get the wealth and bring it back to Africa. This is the only way we can retrieve our wealth stolen during slavery and colonial periods. The Europeans came to Africa and plunder our human and natural resources and used them to develop Europe. Now that God is given us the opportunities to retrieve our dtolen wealth it will be foolhardy and naive to think by staying put in Europe is the best way otherwise we would continue to raise generation upon generation of slaves. Lagos, Nigeria is full of Lebanese, Egyptians, Chinese, Indians etc. I know of Lebanese and Egyptian families who have been in Nigeria for generations, that themselves their children and children's children hold Nigerian citizenship. All because they had to make moves that benefitted them and their families.
It is high time people stop vilifying Africans who escaped oppressive African governments and politicians in search of safety and stability in countries where their lives are valued and their dreams are not smothered. Nigerian youth stood up to the government during the End SARS protest, they were brazenly slaughtered by armed government hitmen in broad daylight and there has been no justice for the victims and their loved ones. A convicted felon has since become Nigerian president, with the full support of many Nigerians who ought to know better, as he runs Nigeria further into the ground.
You are welcome to fix Africa, and leave those who want to legitimately flee to safety to freely do so as well. Do not sit in suffering, slavery and oppression under your African governments and try to dictate to those who walk in freedom and ease abroad how they should live their lives.

So basically you can come to America and my tax dollars will pay for a non-citizen to give birth. Then your child gets to become a citizen and compete for what should be set asides for Black Americans… and in fact then call themselves a Black American. Meanwhile my family has been on this soil for 4 centuries, and built the place you want to come to and still have yet to be repaid. This bothers me deeply. This is not an indictment of Nigeria at large but Nigerians that come to America have often done so at the expense of Black Americans (Freedmen) already here.
