- A lot of the music I write and record for THE DRILLS is obviously influenced by my heroes. Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath... etc. Sometimes it's WAY obvious and other times it's disguised enough to not give it away. In the case of Rock'N'Roll You All Night Long off of Stupid Good Lookings Vol 1, there's no hiding my homage to the KING, Edward Van Halen. Not only to the KING but the whole band. They were ON FIRE! I was fortunate to see the band 4 times from 1980 to 1984, the first time being when I was 14. That changed my life. The biggest lesson was realizing that not only was Eddie incredible but having the time of his life and running around like a maniac while playing his ridiculously wicked parts with his uncanny rhythm. It was to be an inventive guitar player with my own style. So this is not only a tip of the hat to VH1, it showcases MY licks. ...and shows how you can take a cool lick from a hero and make it your own.

I prefer eddies rhythm playing and melodies over his tapping, it’s so much more unique to him
Yes!! I understand it to a point but it always bothers me when I’m watch a video about guitar playing or guitar bands etc. When the topic of EVH comes up they talk about his tapping and that’s it. The tapping is just a tiny part of his playing and what his music is about.

The hardest thing about playing guitar like Eddie is just how FAST and far ahead all his licks are. Meaning, he absolutely has the shortest distance between brain and fingers ever seen on Earth. Its nigh impossible to perform at that level as consistently and brilliantly as him.
That said, Phil, you did it! Great job!

Props for mentioning Jacob Deraps - I'm a fellow disciple of the KING, and that guy is absolutely the closest I've ever seen to capturing Eddie's feel, attitude and swing. I've been trying to get the "I'm the One" boogie riff down for the better part of 20 years and something about it still eludes me.
Everyone does focus on the tapping, etc. But Father Ed is a bad ass rhythm player.
He's as good at Rhythm as any player ever.
Nile Rogers Malcolm Keith Forget it... he has his own thing and it is as good as it gets.
Exactelly I'm really more impressed by the rythmic creativity and energy.. no one never reproduced this.. they all did the solo, tapping, etc . but never the wild energy of his rythmics
EVH would always say that nobody really takes notice of his rhythm playing. I ALWAYS took note of it!

I think most guitar players have used that in guitar solos for years. That’s just a sick ending to a solo. It’s cool with incorporating harmonics and wicked bends.

my dad was a suprb country pedal steel player and he burst into my room hearing Eruption blasting shouting "what on earth is that guy doing!" awesome.
Did yall see that bend behind the nut at the end of the solo. I bet you can't do that many times before your nut is shot. ...but still worth it for a video or recording. This guy is so explosive. And has so much headroom and tone. Openness. Open tone. That gives him dynamics which is absent from most players.
I thank Phil for showing capability and possibility based on interest and application, and also not forgetting music is a joy, not just a chore

I remember hearing Van Halen for the 1st time in the 70s. I'd just got my left hand out of bandages after mutilating 2 fingers in a spindle moulder at work.
'Eruption' stunned and crushed me. I felt beaten a 2nd time.
So I bought a 2nd hand Super Reverb and started all over again and learned to boogie with 3 fingers.
I can't do what Eddie does but I still scare guys at pub jam sessions...

That was great. I'm SO happy that you made this video! The section at 3:21, especially the dissonant part at the start, is awesome. If I only had audio I would be stuck forever thinking "how the heck did he do that?". Now I can actually learn from it, and try to incorporate something like that into one of my solos. .....and I have to either question the sanity of, or have utmost respect for, someone that has a POD Bean on their recording desk. :)
