    The lyrics are incredible..."I turn the engine but the engine doesnt turn" is something Bob Dylan would've written in his prime. Haunting song locked in an eternal groove. The transients on the snare are like someone reminding you that you're alive. All the textures from just one guitar panned left and played right an example that more is not always better. The beautiful dobro at the end and on and on. Great song.

      Their knowledge of the lead singers relation to Dylan ruined it. These guys are pretty good but in they have a tendency towards musical snobbery in some instances. If they had no idea of that relationship they wouldn't have been comparing him to Dylan and accusing him of basically copying his father. It was truly unfair and unfortunate. These guys really need to learn how to rise above some of their judgmental behavior. It's been a theme if you go through their video catalog. Particularly if they are aware of a relationship with another more famous artist/band. They can't help but make a comparison when music should really be judged on its own merits not the merits of someone completely outside of the creation process.

      Knowing it was Jakob Dylan upfront ruined the whole listening experience for them. They went in prejudiced, expecting him to not measure up. When this album came out in 1996 I didn’t know it was Bob Dylan‘s son until years after I had actually bought the album. I thought they sounded more like Springsteen and/or Mellencamp.

      There was little straight rock in this era. Hip-hop, trip-hop or grunge and imitators or the turn of country to slick generic commercial country cosplay. This song was a rare gem from Tom Petty-esque rock: gorgeous production, some soul, great dynamics.

  • @jayburdification
    @jayburdification 10 месяцев назад +62

    Being equally perfectly honest as Alex, I think knowing the singer is who he is up front tainted your listening experience. It’s heartland rock, and pretty much the entire genre owes its existence to Bob Dylan. People weren’t consciously trying to sound like him, they just did because of his vast influence. Most of us heard The Wallflowers for the first time in 1996 without even knowing the singer was Bob Dylan’s son. Unlike other bands with famous offspring, The Wallflowers have always managed to keep Jakob out of paparazzi spotlights, and have their success anyway. Yes, he has a very similar singing style. But he’s actually a much more melodic singer, if we’re continuing to be honest. And Jake was doing a hell of a lot better than Bob in the late ‘90s, who was putting out a lot of dreck. The whole Bringing Down the Horse album deserves a full listen. Especially “Three Marlenas,” “The Difference,” and “6th Avenue Heartache,” which are more Springsteeny than Dylan-esque.

    • @42Mrgreenman
      @42Mrgreenman 10 месяцев назад +5

      Absolutely, Bringing Down the Horse was on my constant CD rotation along with Marcy Playground and Eve 6...I didn't know it was Bob's son until much later when wikipedia became big...and yeah, he's not TRYING to sound like Bob, but he's his kid for god's sake, if anyone could be forgiven for both singing and writing like Bob, it's the person who probably was influenced the most by him...and it's the 90's not the 60's, and this song hits all the right notes for our generation (Which is A&A's generation, which is why I don't get how they are not enraptured)...it's catchy, it's got a deep message, and Jake sounds so good (I know Bob always gets a lot of criticism for his voice) but a B+? C'mon, thought it is a one hit wonder, I feel it's a seminal song of the 90's...but I may be biased because of my blue collar background, that last verse really kills me, anyone who has ever been so broke that they can't afford a replacement bulb for your headlight can really feel this song..."I don't really want to drive with only one headlight, but I've got to get to work to get by so I'll do it." Like Jake said in an interview, "It's about the death of ideas." Every day you make these little sacrifices, each taking a piece of your uniqueness, your creativity, your life (Which is why I love the One Headlight metaphor, you are sacrificing your "Vision" on the dangerous road of life just to make ends meet.) and isn't that just an apt critique of what music has become...segmented, corporatized, and exploited...

And THEN you find out it's Dylan's kid, you go "ooohh crazy. But I already have a relationship with this song."
    When you already know, and people hype it up, you go "ok so this is Dylan kid. Raised by someone in the top few songwriters ever. He's probably always been crazy rich too, access everything musically too". Then you go eeehhh it's not bad. Pretty good.

    If there was a Grammy category for atmosphere, this song would have won it without a contest. Simultaneously sounds immaculately engineered regarding the "space" and ambience yet sounds totally authentic, like the band could walk on any stage and reproduce it. And they did.

    When this song was first released, I thought that it seemed like it had been "ghost written" by Bruce Springsteen as it seemed like a Bruce song, and not a Dylan song (and Bruce is a HUGE fan of Dylan, so I could see him "gifting" this song to Dylan's song.) Well...the first time I ever saw this performed live was at an awards show...and Bruce joined and sang it as a duet. Hmmm....

    These lyrics are actually more inspired by Bruce Springsteen than by Bob Dylan. You're just listening to it with a misplaced Bob Dylan lens. The Wallflowers actually left one of their record labels after they tried to use the Dylan name to sell their album. They're very much their own band.

    As others have said, this was on the radio all the time - one of a handful of 90's tunes that despite their being played thousands of times, still sounded good. Songs like "Kiss From A Rose" by Seal, "Linger" by the Cranberries, "Run-Around" by Blues Traveler and "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve.
    If you've got balls, give a listen to either Soundgarden's "Superunknown" or Sugar's "The Act We Act." 2 absolute bangers from the 90's.

Considering that I had not bought a single for years and never have again, I have a very strong opinion about the quality of this song. Also, I was never a Dylan fan, I certainly respect him but I am more likely to enjoy a cover of his music than him singing. Moving on to then next song then....

    Right on boys - I called a B+ as well. I liked this song when it came out, but when I saw it mentioned as a “banger” I scratched my head a little. Maybe I could use a little help the definition of the word, but when I think of a song as a banger, words like “raw, power, driving” etc. come to my mind. In other words, when the song is over I feel a rush of adrenaline. A good example IMO would be “Good Lovin Gone Bad” by Bad Co.
