Joe re-recorded this song with the Eagles during the making of The Long Run album and it sounds even better than the recording you're listening to from the movie soundtrack from The Warriors (1979). Either version is great though.
Joe Walsh - turn to stone. Ripping guitar. I would recommend the live version where he plays with Don Felder. Dueling guitars. One of the best duo's all time.
If you guys didn't check out Joe Walsh's band prior to the Eagles, you should. The band was called the James Gang, and his big songs were "Funk 49" and "Walk Away". Listen now and thank me later 😂😂😂
You guys absolutely have to listen to the Joe Walsh Eagles version of this song. It’s a lot better a lot cleaner and there’s way more guitar riffs in it. You have to listen to it.
Overproduced "we need a song for our last album" piece ... Walsh even duplicated his guitar solos ... As good as the Eagles were (and they were), their vocals pale in comparison to the backing vocals on this version ...
For years, I've been requesting ANY song from Montrose, from their debut album. Everyone in my high school had this 8 track blaring, back in the 70's. I'm beginning to wonder if we were the only ones that listened to it. ? Banger album that evidently few know of. 🤔
I never heard of them until this week. RUclips recommend me a video of them playing on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Absolutely incredible. I think these guys would like it.
Played over the closing credits for "The Warriors" - and you both need to see that immediately!!! The whole soundtrack is a perfect accompaniment to the action on screen. 🙂❤
This version is a little sleepy… however the Eagles version with a little more up tempo and precision harmonizing plus he rips a nice solo will push your rating to A+ I promise!!
A good Joe Walsh song that you haven't done yet is "Life of Illusion" When his movie star and TV star daughter Lucy Walsh was asked "What are you favorite songs of you dad?" And she said "Walk Away and Life of Illusion". You have already done Walk Away (Thats my favorite) now it's time for Life of Illusion.......Ill be waiting!
Yes, this is the soundtrack version by Joe Walsh, which came out in Apr. '79. The better version of the song is by the Eagles on "The Long Run" which came out Sept. '79. It's such a better version that it's the one everyone has heard. And yes, you have to see "The Warriors". Cult classic.
Great song by Joe Walsh, and "The James Gang." From their early stuff in 1971 or 72. Elite guitarist, writer, and performer. Love the music from his days with "The James Gang." Thanks guys.
1979 from the album The Warriors: The Original Motion Picture "In the City" is a rock song written by Barry De Vorzon and Joe Walsh. It was first recorded by Walsh and released on the soundtrack for the 1979 film The Warriors.[1] Another version of the song, recorded by Walsh's band the Eagles, was included on their album The Long Run, released the same year.
The song is one that when tied to the film it becomes bigger than just listening to it by itself. It is a closing credit song and those are often powerful especially if you loved the movie which many of us did. As a fan of the movie I can't disconnect the two.
I love this song and always have. Eagles version is even better. It’s the perfect song for the movie, and those summer days. This is not a “B.” Oh my gosh. The great thing about JW is that he can produce beautiful songs like this. Chillin by the pool, summer days brothers.
This is one of my favorite Joe Walsh songs, but I am partial to the Eagles version from the "The Long Run" album 1979. All the background vocals by Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmidt are magic.
Some of the best Joe Walsh songs are not "bangers," but they are still driving tunes. This is one of my favorite Joe Walsh songs, and I felt that way from hearing the song without even knowing it was a soundtrack song.
Joe was a frequent guest on Howard Stern in the 1990s. He sang Desperado on Howard’s very popular Channel 9 TV show (with Sam Kinison on guitar). It’s so great…one of my all-time favorites. Don Henley was pissed. Set back the Eagles reunion tour almost a decade.
I went to see the Warriors when it was released and the theater was full of biker gangs... it was quite interesting. When this song came on we all got chills!
Gotta love the grit and power of the guitar work balanced against the solid piano accompaniment. And then the Joe vocals and the backing harmonies. Ear candy all the way.
One of the things I love about Joe Walsh, besides his music, is that he is a hard-drinking, hotel-room-wrecking, guitar-shredding rock god who, like me, also loves to geek out as a ham radio operator. Yup. Guy's been a ham radio op for decades and is often on the air as just another ham radio old dude. Gotta love that!
Walsh solo bangers with his classic sound and ripping guitar work that I (believe) you haven't heard yet: "Welcome To The Club", "Meadows" (wild opening scream), "County Fair", "Happy Ways", "Time Out", "Turn To Stone" and "Midnight Moodies" (jazzier but still fire). Or just listen to the full album The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get ("Rocky Mountain Way" is the opener). Album title sums up Walsh's personality perferctly.
Two Joe Walsh songs you should consider for a reaction are "Meadows" and "Turn to Stone" ("So What" album version)... and I'll throw in "County Fair" as well! Great stuff... great reaction! FYI... Joe uses mid-pace way more than fast rock....heck, it matches his personality! He's chill, bit frantic.
Cool song from the The Movie “The Warriors” I think it was also done on the Eagles’ Long Run album - which would be a great Patreon album to do A lot of great Eagles songs on that one
❤ yeah guys his slide playing with the eagles version...its Joe...more history style and class holding six strings than just about anyone ever....the smoker you drink the player you get defines this quite well..him an don felder together live some nites it was pure heaven..
It was a 70s song. I first heard this song when i saw the Warriors as a kid back in the mid 80s on TV. During the end credits as they are walking down the beach into the sunset (I can't think of this song without thinking of that scene, the song captures the movie perfectly). The movie is like a comic book version of gangs in New York city. Each gang had their own personality and looks. It is one of those fun and guilty pleasure pop culture type movies. Alot of memes were created off that movie, not to mention the many catchphrases. Twisted Sister wrote the song Come Out and Play as a tribute to the movie.
Joe Walsh is a genius, check out his solo album " The Confessor "...it is brilliant, humorous.....A classic, his guitar cuts like a hot knife through butter all the way through it.
Meadows is the next Joe Walsh banger you need to hear. You've already heard Life's Been Good to Me, Rocky Mountain Way, In the City, At The Station; James Gang tunes Funk 49 and Walk Away; As well as many Eagles tunes...so give Meadows a listen and enjoy.
You must remember this was written for a movie.......and that was 45 years ago! What you played here was the sound track version, there is an Eagles version with a added guitar solo and then there is the long live version like I saw at a Joe Walsh concert, Also at every Eagles concert he does a long live version of this and it is towards the end of the show and a highlight of the concert, look up the Eagles live version and you will LOVE IT!!!!
Listen to some of Queen's stuff from the Flash Gordon movie from 1980. The whole soundtrack is done by Queen. Real spacy, trippy, futuristic compositions by Brian May. One of my fav childhood movies. Along with Fire Fox with Clint Eastwood lmao.
The movie was about rival gangs setting up a meeting to come to a peace treaty. While it looked like they would agree to a truce, someone murdered the leader of the movement and blamed a small gang, and all the other gangs then were out to get that gang. The movie is about that gang trying to fight their way back to their turf, encountering all the other gangs along the way back home, while a DJ would update the location of the gang on her radio show. This song is featured at the end. The soundtrack for this movie is so awesome, it is almost like the movie was written for the soundtrack.
Clearly the next place to hit on Joe Walsh: "A LIFE OF ILLUSION" or anything off of "But Seriously Folks" (which is a PERFECT summer album)... I'd go: "AT THE STATION." You also need to hit the genius of bands like XTC ("COMPLICATED GAME" will blow you away... or "SENSES WORKING OVERTIME") and GUIDED BY VOICES (Literally hundreds of great songs, but start with "SPACE GUN" or "ENEMY") Cheers!
How was on Jimmy Kimmel the other night and sang this song. He was on promoting a benefit for vets. His father died in the war. Joe's such a good guy and can still rock.
I saw "The Warriors" opening night in Manhattan. A Navy buddy and I were in Training in NJ, and shot down there for the weekend. This movie sparked some gang fights outside our hotel, and in the morning there was blood in the snow.
I've listened to and loved Joe since Rides Again. And I recently realized my favorite song by Joe is now "County Fair". Really, really good. Joe has a massive catalog that you guys have barely touched. Usually my favorite Joe Walsh song is the one that I'm listening to at the time.
Also, check out "Tend My Garden" by James Gang era Walsh (from the 1970 James Gang Rides Again album). In just this one song, he creates the entire sonic palette of Boston, six years before Boston's debut was released.
I remember going to a repertory theatre in Toronto called the Roxy to see a double feature of Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke and The Warriors for about $4. What a time it was to be young and coming of age. The Roxy also played the Rocky Horror Picture Show every weekend and tons of great concert films.
Joe recorded this version for the movie, and then he recorded it with the Eagles. You probably like the Eagles version better . His recording was a good ending to the movie. Great movie, I saw it in 1980 when it was new.
I recall this song as background on the car radio that summer, not one I’d turn up. But good background. I Have more respect for it now than I did at the time.
The album version is by The Eagles, that’s why you can’t find it in a Joe Walsh solo album. Also came out in the 70s. It’s at the very end of the Warriors after a long deadly odyssey like Journey across New York when the dawn is now breaking and they are on the beach. It is the perfect chill song for those vibes. These guys almost got killed SO many times, and are now finally home safe in the morning… on the beach. Perfect song for that mood. Also the movie is a SUPER badass action movie you HAVE to see. Epic fight scenes and a great kind of teen angst film as well. Not a DEEP film by any means but incredibly entertaining.
The movie was about a gang that attended a New York "all gangs" meeting, and now they had to traverse the city getting back to their turf. It followed their journey across other gangs territory and each gang has their own special "weapon".... some have baseball bats, some have guns, some ride motorcycles and some are....well you get the point.
Great Reaction Andy & Alex! I’ve only listened to the movie once and that was at the end of the movie! Then thankfully it was included in The Eagles Long Run Album! Which is more of Joe Walsh’s style! For whatever reason the song Life of Illusion came to mind! Hope someday y’all can react to it!🎸🙏🏻
Alex, you nailed it with 'Feels like a driving song' ..this song became another life form for me on a long solo drive once, and now every summer since lol!
This song was also on the Eagles’ album “The Long Run.” Underrated follow up to their iconic “Hotel California.” Slightly different versions. Good fit both in terms of lyrics and style to other songs on “The Long Run.”
Love thsi song. I used to be a night club DJ in the late 70s and early 80s and quite often played this as the end of the slow spot. (we used to have them) this or Stair Way to heaven
Walsh has never received enough praise for the musical genius he is. So diverse yet, his work as a Producer for other Artists, you never hear a Walsh sound. Genius!
"The Warriors" movie is a classic. "Warriorrss, Come out and Playaay" is the Line. Baseball furies, Lizzies, Riffs. John Wick 4 made a reference to it by using the women giving updates at the end and calling them "Boppers". 1979.
"Warriors, come out to play, Warriors come out to play-ay".And the little bottles go clink, clink clink. Andy was right, the movie "The Warriors" is about gangs in New York City, it is NOT a Kung Fu/Karate movie, but there is a lot of running involved. Some great quick fights, especially with the Baseball Furies and The Orphans, and the All-Girl gang. "In The City" is the closing theme music played over the credits, and fits the scene perfectly. Seen Joe Walsh twice in concert, and he did play "In The City" at both shows.
A bit before my time. Heard it first with the Eagles' Hell Freezes Over concert. Believe there's a version on Long Run too. Still my favorite version. Which now I'm noticing you can't get on youtube because Don Henley hates fun.
Got to see Joe in concert with The James Gang in 1969. First time, they opened for Janis Joplin at Cincinnati Music Hall and second time as the headliner at The Ludlow Garage. As an aspiring HS guitarist, Joe was one of my guitar heroes. Finally got to see him again opening for Tom Petty in 2017. Incredible talent!
Walk Away - The James Gang . Young Joe Walsh absolutely ripping it.
They did Walk Away & Funk 49 long ago.
100% banger
ONLY if they hear the Live in Concert version, which really brings it to the next level
And don’t forget Funk 49!
@Wordsmyth8 They already did funk 49 and Walk Away.
Joe re-recorded this song with the Eagles during the making of The Long Run album and it sounds even better than the recording you're listening to from the movie soundtrack from The Warriors (1979). Either version is great though.
The Eagles version is so much better. 😮
@@michaels.5878Strong disagree. The drums sound like complete shit in the Eagles version and it has less energy.
Both versions have their charm.
Sounds almost identical to me.
Joe's version is WAY better than the Eagles.
You guys have to watch the movie The Warriors if you haven’t. This song is perfectly placed at the end.
The Warriors....... Everyone should see that at least once.
Amen!!
I saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid!
@@cdemp4795 Neither exist now. In my lifetime we have gone from "Ozzie and Harriet" being mainstream" to Ozzy Osborne being mainstream

Joe Walsh - turn to stone. Ripping guitar. I would recommend the live version where he plays with Don Felder. Dueling guitars. One of the best duo's all time.
The first recording from Joe Walsh's 1972 solo album Barnstorm is the best - he made that guitar roar.
I've always had a thing for Joe's song "The Confessor". Underrated song in my opinion.
AGREE!! That song is VERY underrated. The solo in it is KILLER!
Much agreement!
That song is the biggest banger of all!
Same here. Guitar tone is killer.
The whole album is fantastic...and very, very funny.
If you guys didn't check out Joe Walsh's band prior to the Eagles, you should. The band was called the James Gang, and his big songs were "Funk 49" and "Walk Away". Listen now and thank me later 😂😂😂
They've done both of those.
Don't forget :The Bomber" !!!!
i first learned of joe when he was with this band.
did they also do Life's Been Good?@@sallyphillips9175

You guys absolutely have to listen to the Joe Walsh Eagles version of this song. It’s a lot better a lot cleaner and there’s way more guitar riffs in it. You have to listen to it.
Overproduced "we need a song for our last album" piece ... Walsh even duplicated his guitar solos ... As good as the Eagles were (and they were), their vocals pale in comparison to the backing vocals on this version ...
I prefer this version.
Agreed, Eagles version is better. Better lead guitar. And as far as background Vocals? Hey, it's the Eagles. Don't get better than that.
The eagles long road version is gold particularly at the end. Watching it live is tremendous.
For years, I've been requesting ANY song from Montrose, from their debut album. Everyone in my high school had this 8 track blaring, back in the 70's. I'm beginning to wonder if we were the only ones that listened to it. ? Banger album that evidently few know of. 🤔

Oh yeah, Rock Candy!
Would love some Saxon, too - Denim and Leather…ultimate rocker anthem 🤘🏻
Same here, I was in High School when Montrose first album came out. Great debut album, then saw them in concert a few weeks later.
The only people I know who still know of that band are fans of Sammy Hagar.
Rock Candy
This song WAS released separately, with the Eagles, on The Long Run album, with all the harmonies, and I think its a little faster, and better, IMO!
Yes, better and a faster tempo.
If you have never heard "The Confessor" that should be on the Joe Walsh list. I saw him do it live, and it blew me away.
Next time you listen to Joe Walsh check out Turn To Stone such great guitar work
The Roy Buchanan live version of Turn To Stone is spectacular.
Best Joe Walsh song, IMO.
If they do Turn To Stone, I really really hope they do the version off of Barnstorming instead of the radio single.
@@KingOfNebbishes The live version off You Can't Argue With A sick Mind ('76) will really impress you!

I saw The Eagles in concert in 2018 at The Forum in Los Angeles. I was really impressed with Joe Walsh. He’s still got it.

1979 from the album The Warriors: The Original Motion Picture
"In the City" is a rock song written by Barry De Vorzon and Joe Walsh. It was first recorded by Walsh and released on the soundtrack for the 1979 film The Warriors.[1] Another version of the song, recorded by Walsh's band the Eagles, was included on their album The Long Run, released the same year.

Glenn Fry of the Eagles described Joe as 4or5 of the most interesting people he knew.
Never a better ending song to a movie.❤ WARRIORS🤟

A&A, you'll love Joe's "Life Of Illusion" and "All Night Long"!!
I think the re-recording for Eagles’ album The Long Run is a bit better sonically.
You guys will be blown away by "The confessor" masterpiece.
Just got goosebumps as soon as the backup singers layered in. Great song. Been a while so thanks for blowing the dust off this one for me 🤘

I think the only time I listened to the movie version is when the movie was on. The studio version is so much better, I think. It's also great live.
Check out “Turn to Stone” - the version from his 1974 album “So What,” not the earlier version he recorded with his group Barnstorm.
I'd always thought this was an Eagles song originally, was a little surprised to find out it was credited only to Walsh initially.
great vid, love Joe Walsh. one of my favorite songs of his is I.L.B.T. however I am sure youtube would not like y'all reacting to it hahaha :)
Help me through the night is another excellent Joe Walsh song that will surprise you.
A bit before my time. Heard it first with the Eagles' Hell Freezes Over concert. Believe there's a version on Long Run too. Still my favorite version. Which now I'm noticing you can't get on youtube because Don Henley hates fun.
Alex you absolutely nailed the description of the movie without watching it well played 🎉
