    Very timely video for me, having been scolded by my doctor today about not wanting to take bisphosphonates. I took them for nine years, and after stopping for a "drug holiday" my osteopenia had progressed to osteoporosis two years ago. So for the last two years, I have researched, and worked on my diet, supplementation, and exercise (no thanks to my doctor, who thinks I am non-compliant). I have resolved my leaky gut, hypertension, obesity, and chronic inflammation, all on my own. Do I get any credit for taking my health in my own hands and improving it? No, I get scolded, and told I needed "treatment" when the results of my next dexascan come in. I pray there is some improvement, because this doctor (the 2nd one I have seen for this) asked me if I took calcium and vitamin D, unaware that the research says we need vitamin K2, and should not take calcium supplements. No tests were ordered to see why I am losing bone, no tests of vitamin D or hormone levels, just "you must" take these questionable drugs because of a number on a scan. She appeared to get angry when I asked "what did all women do years ago, as soon as they turned 50, break a hip and die?" Funny we never heard about this before. The doctor said she couldn't answer that, but now there is "treatment" available. I don't mind doing this on my own, but time lost is bone lost, and I need guidance. Too bad we can't count on our doctors for this.

    I was diagnosed at 50 with osteopenia which is rare for me as a man. Calcium supplements do not work as I had been taking them with multi vitamin for years. I quit drinking, started lifting weights and making bone broth soups and taking collagen supplement with Vitamin D and K2 plus lots of vegetables. Hopefully my next DEXA scan comes back with better outcome a year from now.

    Hi Dr Brown. Just came upon your channel and am impressed with your approach regarding bone loss, specifically in women. However, after reviewing page after page of comments , I was amazed at the absence of remarks about vitamin K2-MK7! I’ve had my wife on K2-MK7 for a number of years now and she has consistently gained 1% bone growth per year, every year. This vitamin helps solve the issue of uncontrolled bone loss and calcium build ups in soft tissue because it seeks out the misplaced calcium and transplants it onto the bones where it belongs. I’m totally amazed at its omission in your protocol. Please research what I’ve said. It can be life changing. Thanks for your time.

    I wish somebody like yourself or another doctor on YT who talks about osteoporosis would address the issue of steroids like prednisone. It’s not always a choice to stop them esp if you have something like Addison’s. And even if stopping them going off is a choice the tapering can be a very long process. Many women and men are in this position. The best I’ve heard from doctors online is to get off the medication when and as you can. That’s not always an option.

    Had a PA pushing bone drugs about 15 years ago. Then moved to 2 states where 1st doc had a dexa done - so I could make my own decision. She actually didn’t support the drugs. 2nd doc didn’t even have a dexa done because she was really against the drugs. Now back in the original state & primary said nothing about results. I’m turning 70 & primary didn’t say anything but she sent me to an arthritis specialist (autoimmune condition only I think I only have some markers). That doctor started fear talking (I’m on the edge of osteoporosis in one femoral neck) & even had her front desk person lecture me! But at least it got me to pay more attention to improving those T scores!

    Great video! I recently reversed my osteoporosis diagnosis through diet, exercise, and supplements. I added jumping to my exercise routine based on a study done at Brigham Young Univ. I posted a video about it on 1/7/22. I'm also vegan, which helps a lot. After getting the first "you have to take these meds" from my PCP doctor, I started getting my DEXA scans thru a referral by a chiropractor. That way the PCP doctor doesn't see the results.

      Hi Lea - over time, eating an imbalanced diet of excess animal protein, refined grains, sugar, alcohol, and salt that is low in fruits and vegetables, forces your body to slip into a state of mild acidosis. A small glass of wine a day (red is better) is OK. The Mediterranean diet endorses a glass of wine a day. Just remember, wine has a lot of added sugar as well.
      The most important factor in the alkaline diet is balance... The pH of the urine goes up and down according to the foods we eat, exercise, stress, and other variables. Create a diet that works for your lifestyle!
      We're glad to see you adopt a lifestyle that fits you!

      @mellocello187Well said. Netherlands are one of the worlds highest consumers of dairy, yet they have one of the highest rate of osteoporosis in the world. That in itself says it all.
      Dairy degenerates bones not strengthens them. Bones are made of around 20% calcium, the rest are of various minerals. Prolia and other big pharma bone strengtheners make bones brittle and hollow. Prone to easily break. Best to take D3 and K2 supplements together. Unfortunately there’s too much misinformation out there in marketing and the mainstream medical field.

    Vegetables are not a problem for me, and I eat them every day about two cups. especially the non starchy ones. However, too many fruits do not go along with my diabetic tendencies. I can eat some berries, a couple of prunes, the occasional apple, but never 5 servings a day. Also, I am a small eater, and I do not see myself eating this much all day. I am not just saying, the glucometer also thinks is not a good idea. I use acv every day a couple of tbsp to aid. Any other ideas besides fruits. I am on keto to keep me from becoming diabetic. Before you tell me to stop eating too much sugars and carbs, I never actually been addicted to excess sugars. I have been moderate all my adult life because diabetes runs strong in my gene pool. Two of my siblings are diabetics already. I tested pre diabetic two years ago and keto and intermittent fasting with exercise has helped me to reverse it. So it is not an easy decision for me; it is like either you become diabetic or break a bone one of these days. I am a nurse, and I refuse the medications I know how they work and I did enough physiology and biology to understand the bone turn over process. Any ideas and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    Since impact helps with osteoblast production, could our cushy gym shoes, and other soft soled shoes be a problem? Looking back to my grandmother and other ladies back then, they didn't wear gym shoes or any other kind of soft shoe. Maybe this is why so many ppl have osteoporosis today. We are all walking on clouds.

    • @DrSusanBrown
      @DrSusanBrown  2 месяца назад +1

      Wearing supportive athletic shoes during impact exercises is essential to protect your knees and joints. If you're lighter in weight, your natural impact while walking may be minimal. Adding weights or using a weighted vest can help increase the impact, making your walk more effective for building strength.

    • @DrSusanBrown
      @DrSusanBrown  3 года назад +2

      I've studied the literature on whole body vibration for a long time. I think the higher amplitude higher vibration platforms are probably more effective for building muscle and bone. All of the platforms seem to help balance. The low level vibration may be helpful in particular for thin women. if you have a low-level device can't doo any harm to use it every day maybe even twice a day.

I then found Dr Browns book and read it cover to cover. I tried to stick to a regimen of diet and vitamin but life gets in the way. Then I had a dexa scan in 2019 and my new doctor scolded me again when I told him no. I am now 67 and a new doctor I have will not give me another dexa test to see where I am. She spent 20 minutes telling me I need these drugs and that you cannot build bone at my age and it will just keep sluffing off and I will fall and break my hip or worse my back. I really need to be committed now so watching these videos really helps me.
    My mother had osteoporosis as did my grandma. My mom took all the drugs and still broke her hip in a fall at 90 years old. She had been told by a doctor in her 80’s that she had thick bones but they were brittle due to them not sluffing off cos of the drugs. My mom had been dedicated he whole life to taking calcium and Vitamin D pills.

    No one should be going on any bisphosphonates They are only at osteopenia level. I researched it, and osteopenia was actually named by a pharmaceutical company because they thought if they could tell everybody they are at that level, they would get millions more money by getting people started early. Osteopenia only means pre-osteoporotic. It isn't until you are at the level of -2.1 that you should even consider taking any of those medicines. If you are only at osteopenia, you are extremely lucky and you shouldn't worry, just get started on the correct diet and exercise to prevent it from it getting worse.

NHS in U.K. have a single response protocol of issuing bisphosphonates without further investigation as to potential cause or most beneficial drug. In fact they only offer a Dexa test in consequence of a broken bone or if over age 70. They have no interest in health care only in prescribing pharmaceuticals.

    You are not the only one got scolded by doctors to tears for not taking their advice on medication. Many doctors are getting out of control with their ego. I wonder if they have the Dr. House syndrome.

    This is not only a women problem. Men have it too.

    • @DrSusanBrown

      This is correct! Dr. Brown works with both women and men to help address bone density though you see a higher percentage of women and often women are instilled with fear when addressing their low bondenity through many medical doctors. Not all of them though take that perspective. We believe that knowledge is power and we believe in hope instead of fear and trying to get to the bottom of the cause.
