Yes. It is one of those sort of songs. Louisiana is the one that makes me look like I have a watery allergy. I'm not crying bro. It's hay fever so stop asking.
Beauty and sorrow combined with biting historical commentary. It takes an incredibly brave song writer to create a work that intentionally makes listeners so uncomfortable. I am so grateful for Randy Newman.
I worked on this project with the Rand Corporation. At a small meeting once, the manager told me, “Larry, I’m tired of your sardonic wit”. I started laughing because I realized that is why I love Randy Newman.
The hauntingly painful lyrics, sympathetic strings, and deft piano playing is Newman's trademark. Arguably America's greatest composer, this song of slavery and deceit is timeless.....
Americas Poet Laureate. Contrary to what many people think, he truly loves this country. That's why he dares to write the raw truth about our shortcomings that so badly need to be changed. By looking directly @ them as opposed to turning our attention to some trivial pastime.
It's funny how those who always talk about how much they hate America never actually leave the nation unless they're fleeing authorities after committing some sort of crime IE Roman Polanski. -Love, an immigrant from Burkina Faso
I always loved the string arrangements of this song. The juxtaposition of the proud ‘Americana’ style of the music to the biting lyric is what makes this song a classic. I think it’s Randy’s best work.
There are songs which are truly American by the nature of their lyrics. I think that although other peoples can enjoy his music, it takes an American to feel the pain that he writes.
Personally, the orchestration of the first 3 songs together of side 2 of "Good Old Boys" is worthy of being next to almost any George Gershwin orchestration , in the American Music Pantheon. The songs are "Kingfish","Every Man a King" and "Louisiana", it's a wonderfully placed trio, 2songs by Newman but the middle by Huey Long.
OK I get it, he's so talented. Love them strings, etc but OMG the lyrics! Wow. Omg. wow. This "listen to" just gave me a heavy mood change from where I just was. I happened upon this piece after reading a quote from Linda Ronstadt saying more or else that she would not touch this piece because she couldn't put her stamp on it. "It's perfect as is".
Randy Newman is a national treasure. I first heard this song in the 1970s as covered by Linda Ronstadt. I thought it was a gorgeous song, beautifully sung by Ronstadt, but didn't pay attention to the lyrics at all. Just sang along with Linda! Now, many years later, I now really listen to Newman's lyrics, and understand.
Given that no one at the time was collection the data you describe no such information exists. Clearly you are full of sh-t. You are another paranoid nincompoop not taking your meds.
And there are too many people in this country who have no idea that this is supurb sarcasm. This song was a kink in every raist crotch when it first came out. Thank you Randy.
Whenever I listen to Randy Newman sing & perform songs, I have always mistaken him for being black!!!!!! I always thought at first Randy Newman was black!!!!!! I like him very much, he is a very great & a very excellent Singer & Piano Player, Randy Newman!!!!!!
thank you randy, just reading the comments to you is gratifying to know that you are appreciated so much. there's none better because ya just can't improve on perfection! been with ya since that movie about given up cigarettes, try in to give up the "funny ones" now after 44 years. sorry I ever started, glad the herb is legal now, but a little sad that it's look at as a cure all. because for some ( like me) it suspends. sorta got of track. thanks for the mameries.
I really hope that Randy Newman will come to Belgium again. Last concerts were postponed...such a pity. Following his music since 12 Songs...it is my opinion that he is one of the most important composers of our time. Music and text... 2:52

In America you get food to eat Won't have to run through the jungle And scuff up your feet You just sing about Jesus and drink wine all day It's great to be an American Ain't no lion or tiger, ain't no mamba snake Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake Ev'rybody is as happy as a man can be Climb aboard, little wog, sail away with me Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay In America every man is free To take care of his home and his family You'll be as happy as a monkey in a monkey tree You're all gonna be an American Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay Sail away, sail away We will cross the mighty ocean into Charleston Bay
Wikipedia - "Sail Away" is a song by Randy Newman, the title track to his 1972 album. In a 1972 review in Rolling Stone, Stephen Holden describes "Sail Away" as presenting "the American dream of a promised land as it might have been presented to black Africa in slave running days."[2]
For me as a German Randy has always been the prototype of an Eastcoast-Intellectual. Until I learned that he comes from the Westcoast. Doesn't change his ingenuity, though.
He and his family are the current musical dynasty in Hollywood. He's 2nd generation. I also love his N'awleans style piano on some song. He and Sinatra - The Kings of Sardonic.

Wikipedia - "Sail Away" has been widely praised by critics and Newman fans as one of his finest works. It is often cited among the best tracks on one of his best albums. Like many Newman songs, the relative simplicity and "hominess" of the music contrast powerfully with the emotional fortitude of the lyrics. Greil Marcus wrote in his 1975 book Mystery Train: Images of America in Rock 'n' Roll Music that the song is "like a vision of heaven superimposed on hell."[3] "Sail Away" has been covered by many artists in live performances, notably, Ray Charles, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Etta James, Frankie Miller, Roseanna Vitro, Bobby Doyle, Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson, Dave Van Ronk, Harry Nilsson, and Dave Matthews. On her first solo album, Gladys Knight covered it as part of a medley with Allen Toussaint's song "Freedom for the Stallion", which shares themes of the slave trade. Bobby Darin covered the song on his last album before he died in 1973, Motown's Bobby Darin.[4] Newman later said, "Bobby Darin could sing, but he did 'Sail Away,' and, well... I don't think he understood it. He did it like was a happy song about coming to America."[5] Upon its release as a single, Record World said that the song "is simply superb."[6] In 2011 it was listed at number 268 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[7]
If there's an American songwriter and musician who has a better body of work than Randy Newman, including Dylan or Springsteen,I'd like to know who it is.

If ever a song showed the cynicism of slavery this was it. Only RN could get away with using ‘Wog’. In that one word and its delivery you know so much about the evil of slavery.
Randy Newman sings the song as he felt it when composing the song ....the Harry Nilsson version in my opinion, dare I say, is better. Like Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in his way, but it took a Laurence Olivier to add that sprinkle of magic.
Two things convince me that most Americans don't get the concept of the unreliable narrator. The first is that Newman isn't considered one of the nation's most important artists. The second is that Donald J. Trump is president.
@@Dcraine this is not a politic song look up the meaning to it. Or even better ill help you. This thoughtful, austere piano ballad about the slave trade finds Newman's slaver protagonist attempting to convince his African listeners to climb aboard his ship and sail away with him to the promised land of America.
I am only realizing the slavery connection now. Previously I thought it was a commentary on the "American Dream" in general and all those people from around the world who come in search of it... and find something but not anything like the heaven they imagined Did slavers ever actually bother making these promises? What an incredible observer, composer and preformer this man is. He is up there with the greats.
