Either way her Oscar was for her whole character... but it was in the details where she got the edge against the other 4 nominees

It is when an actor has little to work with and makes a gem , that is a good performance. Some the best performances are never recognised by the academy. She had a lot of back up to get nominated.
Whoopi Goldberg was perfect for this role. She added the comic relief to what would otherwise been a dark and dreary movie had the role been played straight by another actor. Her delivery was spot in. Tony Goldwyn also was superb.

I saw this in the movie theater with my parents in 1991 when I was 10....the movie was a huge hit and was playing on multiple screens...the entire movie theater was in hysterics over Whoopi's scenes, and you could hear everyone laughing their asses off in the whole place!!!
I think we can all relate to how Oda May feels at being forced to give away the $4 million-very reluctant,to,say the least,at being forced to give away something we really wanted to keep,or in general,at being forced against our will to do something we would hate to do.
