here's a fun fact: when Joni Mitchell first heard You Get What You Give, she emerged from a long funk and crisis of faith and it re-ignited a passion in her to continue to innovate in her song writing
Oh hell yeah! I kind of have my copy of Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too on iTunes setup like this, with the various leaked tracks tacked onto the end as "bonus tracks".
@Jerry Landers And, interestingly, the version on the Santana "hits" album isn't even that one, it's Santana and Tina Turner! So, originally the song featured Gregg, who co-wrote it, then Clive Davis wanted a woman/bigger star, so he brought Tina Turner on. She refused to shoot a video, so they got Macy Gray. Davis wasn't satisfied with what Macy Gray did, so at the last minute, they brought Michelle Branch in. And a great song got pretty much buried under all that history and pop-industry maneuvering
Since I was a young kid I already fell for this song, more so it had Carlos Santana's classic licks and it was interpreted by my crush (back then), Mich Branch :3 Fast forward 20 years later, and I hear this on a lazy weekend; so this was a Gregg Alexander!!! Now this explains why it was magically addictive all along! Also read that Maestro Carlos, with all due rspect to Mich B, also digs Tina Turner's version...
Same I used to think Game of Love was about Michelle Branch at the time. Had no idea it was something else that had nothing to do with her though once I heard this one. Sure got to hear the other songs Michelle Branch was doing in the 2000's and it was a point where she was transitioning from teen years to adult at the time of her albums. Then I noticed a Jpop crew used this song and translated it as "Kimi Ni Fuku Kaze" for the Japanese Audience. I had no idea this Gregg Alexander's song even went to Jpop execs too after this song was released here in the USA.
Much better than Tina Turner version. Michelle Branch was definitively the right choice and the song production of the Grammy award version is exactly the same as Greg Alexander apparently intended when writing this musical gem.
This gives me such a greater appreciation of this song. I'd be so happy if they reissued a 7" of "You Get What You Give" with "Game of Love" as the b-side.
I'm sure a lot of people have one of 'these', but man, did Gregg Alexander not deserve to be a one-hit wonder...even if he never put out anything beyond "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too", that record alone is filled top to bottom with masterful pop that--combined with the lovably offbeat voice and lyrics he sits on top of it all--results in something really special. The fact that technically incomplete demos like this and "A Love Like That" are strong enough just as they are shows how natural the talent is. A few years back I read a great article that interviewed him about working on the music for "Begin Again", but still brought up the New Radicals period...but even that was frustrating, because the journalist repeatedly referred to the "one great song" they were responsible for.
@Cabalen Entertainment She had a couple of earlier solo hits..."Everywhere", and I think the other one was called "Happy Now", but yeah...I know what you mean
@Cabalen Entertainment Do you know what happened to her, btw? Is she still doing solo tours just on a smaller kind of scale, or did she become more of a 'behind-the-scenes' songwriter, like Gregg? Cos she seems like someone that could be really cool to see now, on a like stripped down, small-venues solo tour, you know?
@Cabalen Entertainment Wow, thanks for the info...a lot of quirky stuff going on there I had no clue about. Obviously she can't be touring now--since NO ONE can--but I'd be curious to see if when that stuff starts up again, if she hits the road...even just being familiar with a handful of those early 00's singles, I'd totally check her out at the right venue.
@Cabalen Entertainment Ahh, thanks for the tip! Man...think about how utterly difficult, or even impossible, finding this stuff would've been before RUclips, or even just before the modern internet...Yeah, basically fucking impossible, lol
I too was disappointed that Gregg pulled the plug on the band. I am still listening to that album and it never disappoints. I wonder what other gems are out there that haven't seen the light of day. This was a great find.
El escribió y produjo esa canción. Regularmente hacen este tipo de grabaciones basicas para enviárselas a los artistas quienes la cantarán y tocaran para que entiendan el sentimiento detrás de la creación y de ahí ellos puedan mejorarla a su estilo.
Sounds wonderfully and fitting too. He got a great voice. I'm 56now I hear a unique sound I loved rappers dmc in the 80s .as good as original ,by Michelle branch.
This is the original and was recorded and written by Gregg and in fact he also did the original record with Santana but the producer thought it would be better with a women's voice. Michelle Branch was the third female that tried to sing it and they used her take for the album. Michelle sings it a lot like Gregg did.
@@timringgenberg2844 It's interesting after the Michelle Branch Cover was released it was re written in Japanese as a Jpop song Called Kimi Ni Fuku Kaze. It's amazing how an unreleased New Radicals song was originally meant for their then rumored 2nd album was reused for Santana, Michelle Branch and a Jpop crew.
This version of this fantastic tune has such a great vibe. It’s sexy and pretty Alexander.is a world class talent. Joni Mitchell said he’s the perfect punky white boy. I agree.
its cruel how destiny play horrible games on us, so it was this guy inspiration. but didn't make it big. Carlos and Michelle did a better job I guess, just sad how he must feel .others get rich at the expenses of other. cruel just cruelty
He is fine and his career as a producer and writing songs for others has made him plenty rich. Don’t lament the choices we make in a capitalist society, just be grateful you live in one
Absolutely brilliant...reminiscent of Todd Rundgren!
That New Radicals album is genius. He has a unique signature.. building major chords which say Greg Alexander. Love him
here's a fun fact: when Joni Mitchell first heard You Get What You Give, she emerged from a long funk and crisis of faith and it re-ignited a passion in her to continue to innovate in her song writing
“You Get What You Give” is literally the song that saved my life.
It was the line "Courtney Love and Joni Mitchell You're all fakes
run to your mansions we'll kick your azz in.
Is this true? That is awesome
Not a "fun fact". Get outdoors more often.
We desperately need a Gregg/Danielle demos & bootlegs album.
I support this.
That's one of the holy grails of pop music.

One of the best songwriters I have ever heard in fifty years.
He is one of the few artists who can rearrange my DNA when I listen to him. Imagine having that power over people…
"You Get What You Give" has pulled me out of many deep funks.
Gregg is a brilliant writer! Loved him from the day I heard him.

A rare gift that few have like Gregg.
I didn’t know I needed this in my life..

Good point!
Gregg is a musical genius. Does not get the recognition he most definitely deserves.
I love this version!
This is absolutely amazing
Stephen. Both versions are great. I love Greggs work with Danielle the best. They write songs for each other.

This dude should’ve been a bigger star.
he didn't want to be a star
I would love to see a live recording of Gregg Alexander singing this !
Linda canção Greg!
RIP Tina Turner who was initially assigned to do this song after Gregg Alexander did the demo for New Radicals.
He wrote it with Rick Nowels… awesome tune.
is this for sale anywhere?
Nope it’s unreleased.
Good job, this demo is beautiful!
Muy bueno este artista ....
Foda é essa leveza da canção..Muito boa!

Adoro a voz do Gregg!
How did you remaster this? Also, would you be willing to remaster on old Japanese track by any chance?

Hello Daniel, is there a way you could share the audio file?
I'll see what I can find
Excelente canción!!
Mucho mejor que la versión de Santana. Gregg Alexander es un genio completo, un maldito genio musical. ♥

He would have received royalties because he wrote the song.
It was his whole decision. He didn’t like the fame so he just gone to be a successful composer.
He already had a hit song in 1998 and he won a Grammy for this song. I’m sure he’s fine
