      Best case scenario buy privately and bring a genuinely knowledgeable friend along with you. Never go to any kind of dealership. Private garages run the same risks so avoid those too unless you personally know the owner or workers. Ironically you are better off in a "chain" store garage since the minimum wage workers have no real incentive to rip you off.

    I've been driving for 30yrs now and it's hard to trust any garage I go to for repairs or mot's. The last 2 places I've been to refused to work on my car as I told them what was wrong and to fix only those things. One place I took it to failed its mot and wanted £286 for the mot plus welding and brake pipes. Not believing them I paid for the mot but took it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion. It failed on a faulty back light that the 1st place didn't even notice. Didn't need welding and didn't need brake pipes. I went back to 1st place with my mot to show them in front of customers, they couldn't get me out quick enough. Robbing bastards. (excuse my language) I've just about had enough of mechanics. Sorry if someone genuine is reading this but the bad ones are giving good ones a terrible reputation.

      @campbellscollision and you think customers want to deal with a individual like yourself from the comment alone you seem like the person to do half arsed jobs and not to mention the person might not have the required tools or knowledge to repair it , if you had a fault with your boiler who do you phone even though you know what might be issue ? Ahh that's right a repairman who is qualified for the job , remember who pays your bills customers without them you have nothing simple build a reputable company with clients and you will have them referring friends family etc left right and centre I only know because I've experienced this myself with my uncle's buisness due to fact half of time a customer comes in they always mention someone who is either a regular customer for m.o.t's etc or say well my friend or family member recommended I come here as I've heard your decent reputable garage , nothing wrong with honesty try it sometime and you'll not have to be dishonest to make a living

      @campbellscollision think you might want to re-think what you just put in end quotes because I never said "you know personally my uncle had a garage" , ugh ugh umm... he still has a garage and been running it since god knows when it's called roys autos they also do recoverys worked there for my work experience when I was 15 I'm now 23 working for a tech company called Cultrix
      Edit: furthermore if you think making your own repairs is always a great idea then you sir are truelly dumb due to the fact your not qualified to mess with a boiler wait till that thing goes bang, I'll be laughing when your in a hostel or shelterd housing and on news 'man blows own house up and neighbour's trying to repair his boiler'

    Too many tyre fitters that think they're mechanics nowadays.

    • @manawearblack
      @manawearblack 5 лет назад +13

      Ned You’re deluded mate, changing a tyre is the easiest thing in the game. If tyre cutters are better than mechanics, why can mechanics change tyres/wheels, but tyre fitters can’t drop an engine out?

    • @manawearblack
      @manawearblack 5 лет назад +4

      Ned Well you’re saying that tyre fitters work harder than mechanics, which insinuates the work is harder, which is why the extra effort is required. Second of all you say there are no mechanics anymore only strippers and fitters which is an equally stupid statement. How do you define a mechanic? Tyre fitters have one of the easiest jobs going. Can I, someone who is slightly above average when it comes to mechanics, car work etc change a tyre? A wheel? Yes. Can I change an engine? A turbo? Can I fuck. Can a tyre fitter? Can they fuck

    • @manawearblack
      @manawearblack 5 лет назад +1

      Ned tyre fitters are the painter/decorators of the car world, the lowest skill job in the industry. Just like painters, it takes no skill, just the right equipment

    • @manawearblack
      @manawearblack 5 лет назад

      Ned I’m not a mechanic lol, I’m nothing to do with the trade just mess about as a hobbie, and through messing about I’ve learnt how to change a tyre, take a wheel off etc. I still haven’t learnt how to change an engine though. Surprising since changing a tyre is harder?

    • @manawearblack
      @manawearblack 5 лет назад

      Ned you said tyre fitters work harder than mechanics which insinuates that tyre fitting is harder than mechanics. Mechanics change engines, tyre fitters change tyres. I can change tyres in a respectable time, Can you? I can’t change an engine or a turbo in a respectable time, can you?

    i once serviced a car and strongly recommended to the customer that we change the clutch as it was on its last legs. They refused and took the car away.
    It came back 4 days later on a recovery truck with a blown release bearing. Some of us mechanics are legit.

    • @MrDickBills
      @MrDickBills 8 лет назад +12

      Why did the release bearing fail? Was it due to the clutch? I am not being critical, just curious how a clutch breaks a release bearing. On the other hand, if you noticed a clutch problem, notified the customer and then the clutch failed, you did the right thing. There was obviously something not right. I do most repairs on my car myself, but have a garage round the corner with about four workers in it. I let them work on my car because I do trust them and can not be bothered to crawl under my car for a few quid. You sound like you are that type of honest garage. I would never go in to a KwiKfit /halfords type place under any conditions. I am not a car mechanic, but I have taken large engines out of large cars and put them in smaller ones for fun, which makes me slightly more able than your average Kwikfit fitter.

    • @James-iw4fz
      @James-iw4fz 6 лет назад +1

    There's a place in Durham ripped me off with my Touareg, in the end I had to stop him at 1300 quid, wouldn't let me take the car until I paid him, his mistake was saying the water pump was dodgy ( A known fault with these cars) when it had just been replaced, the place is called Durham Turbo Pacs, 9 hours labour in which he washed the car, rather expensive carwash, had it for days as well, his quote on the phone was misleading, he said to replace the turbo " that'll be £400 for the turbo plus £180 for parts and labour, plus vat" he didn't say parts plus labour

    I don't know how to feel about this one - all the times I have taken my car to a "proper garage" they have always tried to tell me things are broken or going to break when they ain't. Same for the very few times I have went to the manufactures garage. Renault being my worse experience - they literally had my car for over 5 months trying to "fix it" - to cut a long story short - I got the car back (still not fixed) and decided to check it over myself - within 5 minutes I suspected a broken/damaged valve - a few hours later when I took the head off the engine, I confirmed it was a broken valve, replaced it and the car was like new again.
    Most of the time (at least in my experience) these "experts" don't know their arse from their elbow and spend most their time talking shit based on what they have READ out of their latest TEXT BOOK. I've always worked on cars myself since my last experience with Renault - I'm a perfectionist so I get the job done how it's supposed to, generally I get it done much quicker and of course much cheaper.

    everyone in my family use the same garage, and so do many of our friends,
    he will never charge you, if he cant fix your car. BUT 99.9% of the time
    he fixes it, at the original quote he gave you. he may advise you at times, that you should be aware of a problem.
    but if its ok for a good few more hundred miles, he will say so, if ever i cant afford to pay the full amount for
    a job, he will let me pay half, and pay other half week later, and he will never do a job, without ringing u first.
    if the car wasn,t worth fixing, he would say so, not just botch it up, to make money from you...
    guys like this mechanic are as rare as rocking horse shit.....but they are out there, you just have to find them

    In all fareness With the ford focus..seeing a leak like that would normally indicate a problem slave witch means the gearbox would have to come out. And ruel of tumb... if the gearbox has to be taken out you should always change the clutch..because its open silly not to when you've already paid for the same labour to take the box out....

    Does anyone notice the guy in the red t-shirt slate the guy by saying "unless he has a crystal ball in his office, he has no way of knowing that clutch will go within 2000 miles"
    The same guy that said the clutch had 30k-40k on the focus?

      also difference in wording, The dealer made it definite within 2000km, however the mechanic gave an estimation between two amounts, both amounts significantly larger, therefore errors in estimation less accountable

    Oh could I add to this.......we had a laguna, gearbox made noises, so this joker offered a new gearbox and new clutch......when it was fitted the reverse lights didnt work.....we offered to travel to him to get it fixed and have a night in Clerkheaton......they claimed to have fixed it, yet a few miles later, the AA were called due to a noise and they suggested the work was dangerous. Clerkheaton offered to recover the vehicle and repair it...its about the only thing they did as the repair, once complete, couldn't be returned as their recovery vehicle was out of action (hope it wasnt the clutch), so they offered to go halves on a delivery cost....we accepted.....the returned vehicle dripped pink fluid everywhere, they had overfilled a manual transmission with ATF (automatic transmission fluid).....so we had this drained to the correct level (it had also made a mess of my mother in laws drive) and still it dripped as they had not removed the plastic seal from one of the driveshafts which they should have done. We claimed our overnight accommodation, fuel, cleaning costs against their guarantee and they offered a reasonable amount.

    To be honest, the aftermarket clutch he fitted to the focus, isn't a "chocolate" clutch, its a perfectly acceptable aftermarket item that you'll buy from any motor factors. Not everyone wants Sachs or LuK.

    Commercial mechanics are robbing gits. Always see a family friend or sole specialist.
    Two garages near me quoted £400 for disc brakes change.
    So I got a friend to teach me how it was done properly, spent £60 on a trusted and reviewed set of discs and pads and it took me an hour to do the pair.

      You can buy Genuine Parts and change the Discs and Pads on your motor at a FRACTION of what a typical robbing Garage would charge.

    • @davidbrown-yx3gz

      Second hand would be from a scrappies, reconditioned would be an old gearbox sent to a specialist then stripped down and all worn parts replaced and rebuilt

Asking questions should be considered a intuitive thing to do, only morons would want to live in a world where people don’t ask for explanations on things they don’t understand. Maybe, if you asked more questions, you wouldn’t come across as stupid.

    Just a tip, get rich, and then buy shares in each company you require services from then you created a business deal. For those who can't do this there should be an insurance out there for people whom can't afford one off payments to avoid debts mounting, and keep the garages in business perhaps that be a great idea if this idea is at all possible to ease pressure and,money worries, the idea would make, allot of people happy, and as they say happy people, happy business and of course happy life, just an idea though from a mere mortal

It's a mechanical world things go wrong. You don't owe us for the 2 hours you owe us for the time it's took to learn and perfect our skills fixing cars. If that's the case try fix it yaself divvies.
