Speaking of the elves, they are entirely blue clothes until towards the end. At that point, some of them go green, while others remain blue. One of them seemed to permanently turn to green clothes after "We Are Santa's Elves." It's highly inconsistent by my observations, but at least Hermey always has blue clothes. "Everyone wishes for silver and gold": "for" is there. I listened to it like 6 times, and I could not tell whether "Everyone" was clipped or not. If it was, it was masked with a sound effect. Which, in that case, might be an indication of desynced audio. Yukon Cornelius always has green clothing. "As good as everyone felt" sounded like it was clipped. The peppermint scene was present. The ending had a whooshing wind sound to it. The sleigh lifting off, I'm pretty sure I noticed a bit of a skip before it cross faded to Sam the Snowman. I never noticed anything odd before, so your videos brought some interesting information to my attention.
I also owned the limited keepsake edition growing up as a kid... I'm convinced those DVD presses of the Rankin Bass films are cursed. Mr. Magoo and Little Drummer Boy straight Up did not play out of the box. They would just cause the player to freeze and required the disk to be removed. Like they forgot the files completely on that pressing. Santa Clause, Cricket on the Hearth, and Rudolph all worked fine. Frosty The Snowman had a similar issue where after about a year of use- no matter which version you selected it would only play "Frosty Returns" and not the original. We knew the disk HAD the original frosty on it- but no matter how much we cleaned it up the dvd would always play Frosty Returns.
@gabbyhaynes5394 Hmm... odd. I can't confirm or deny much about Mr. Magoo or Little Drummer Boy, as I used that disc a whole one time ever. However, the Frosty Disc in my copy has never given any issues from what I remember.
I don't think I've ever had problems with my set, but I generally don't watch Cricket or Magoo, and rarely watch LDB or Returns for that matter. I usually make a point of watching Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty and Rudolph every year then watch my *other* Christmas collection which has Year Without a Santa Claus and the original animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas (and largely ignoring the rest, those two are my favorites).
I almost wonder if the 1964 version being apparently in bad condition and unable to get a new scan is the reason CBS airs such a poor version to this day. They probably couldn't scan the "We're a Couple of Misfits" song for their 2005 TV cut, so they just used the visuals of Fame and Fortune with the audio of the older song. Personally, I'd rather they'd have just used Fame and Fortune there if that really was the case, rather than do such a poor editing job, even if the Fame and Fortune song is inferior. I'd rather have CBS show a consistent cut of the film with an inferior song than an inconsistent cut.
@curtthegamer934 No problem, beginning December 6, NBC will take care of that after 52 years on CBS, except it'll clock in to its new 1-hour-15-minute timeslot, (Not bad for a 52-minute TV special.) and everything that CBS took back out, since 2005, will be put back in, especially "We're a Couple of Misfits," and Yukon's 3rd prospector attempt and/or success to find himself a peppermint mine near Santa's workshop. "Fame and Fortune" won't be invited to the "extended" broadcast, though.

To be honest, I'd prefer the Golden Books VHS and DVD releases of this film, because that's the release I grew up with, but you do have great points here. 😊 I've never even noticed those errors until I watched this video. 😮
I grew up with the 2002 DVD release which I have as part of the Rankin Bass red book DVD collection. It served me well for over two decades until I picked up the 4K release when it dropped in 2022. I had no idea there was this much controversy over the different releases of this special. Guess i’m just glad that I own the two best versions of the special.
Gotta say I’m a fan of the 1993 FHE VHS release of the special. Got the DVD with the upgraded version and went back to watching the VHS release because it has the 1965 version.
Years before the set came out, I’d been sayin we NEEDED it. 2022 was finally the right time I guess and I’d received a copy for my 18th birthday. Unfortunately, I only got to use it a few times before leaving for the Navy last summer. You best BELIEVE I watched it during Christmas leave last year!!
I have a 2010 DVD released by Vivendi which is the exact same as the 2007 Genius release but with a different cover and a Vivendi logo at the beginning
I also prefer the Universal re-release of the special as well except from 2018 (is it the same master as the 2022 Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD?)! So you're not alone on this one!
It seems that after 53 YEARS, the Rudolph special will return to its original NBC network on December 6, 2024 at 8:00pm ET SOURCE: The Futon Critic (i know the video isn't related to the comment but since the Broadcast Changes has since been blocked (alongside the original B&W credits for some reason) i figure i would share an update with you here)

@aubreeofarc I watched the Rudolph special on NBC!! it seems very much like they kept the original "We're a couple of Misfits" visuals, with the full song. And the peppermint mine scene! Seems like they did restore the original song and just about everything else, seems like it's pretty faithful!!

Just out of curiosity, if there’s anyone out there who owns a copy of the Golden Books DVDs of Rudolph, can they confirm whether or not Arthur Rankin’s introduction is on the disc or is it just the later Sony Wonder releases? Rick Goldschmit says on his blog that the 2000 DVDs have the intros and other features but looking at pictures of the back cover, the intros aren’t listed on the Golden Books versions but are on Sony Wonder’s release.
Thank you for making Rudolph content. Rudolph is one of my special interests and i don't really have friends who love it as much as i do. So thank you for making this content, i really appreciate it!
I will use the master from the 2002 dvd and upscale it to 4k. And the audio will be the 2018 universal print for most of it, the good part from the line “well as good as everyone feels” will be taken from the 1965 print, and the last few frames of the sleigh ride shot will be from the 1993 vhs but I will remove the scratches and dirt. And the ending audio will be from the 1989 vhs (except for Santa shouting out merry Christmas.) and that will be it.
Your missing one. There was one that came in a red, box. That folded open. It had Rudolph, frosty, Santas coming to town. Plus frosty returns and little drummer boy. And even came with a soundtrack dvd
Is there a dvd release that includes the cut scene (Yukon C. discovering the peppermint mine) put back into the show, rather than as an extra feature? There was such a version on RUclips, before it was taken down (I can't find it, anyway).
Thank you for the exhaustive research. I'm so confused. I have 2-3 versions and feel like I need to get more to make sure I cover every single aspect of this film.
The There's Always Tomorrow scene on the 2007 Genius Ent. release appears to have been sourced from an cleaner audio copy that's also inexplicably louder than the rest of the special's audio. BTW, their "Original Christmas Classics" release does use the 2007 "remaster".
I liked your review on the extremely rare LP mode copy of the Rudolph VHS from 1988. By the way, have you thought at all about putting a label on it or taking the record tab out? Thanks a lot, and nice DVD collection by the way.
I own the 2007 DVD release of it, and while it is the least good in terms of picture quality, I still liked it. I got it during the 2016 holiday season, and I was just happy to upgrade the special from vhs to dvd, after so many years. Yeah, I know I could've gotten the blu ray of it, but after hearing that the blu ray releases weren't the best, I just went with it. Plus, I was just plain happy to have a home video release of the peppermint scene, and having Fame and Fortune as a bonus feature. And while the green on Yukon's coat is a bit jarring, in a way, the picture quality it has does give it a vintage feel. Rudolph is my favorite Christmas special of all time. I watch it like multiple times each year at Christmas. Not just on home video regardless of home, but also on tv. CBS keeps screwing it with the "We're a Couple Misfits" number, so Freeform does it better, even if it doesn't cut and edit things for commercial breaks that well. Would anyone hate me if I find the 2007 release decent enough warts and all?
0:04 I’m voting for this complete Collection. But I prefer the DVD release. The other known DVD releases of the Rankin/Bass Christmas Specials “Especially if The Grinch & Mr. Magoo is along with one of those.” I might have to sell them away & make room for the complete Collection in DVD release.
Ok I have a few things to say. 1. My copy of the 2005 DVD is a bit different from yours. It still has the Arthur Rankin Jr. introduction, is the version with the CD (although I don't have it since I bought it secondhand even though it came with the other inserts), and the screenshot of Destiny's Child on the front is the actual group, not them in a Rankin/Bass style from the music video. 2. What type of portable media player do you use? Pretty neat that it plays Blu-rays and 4Ks. 3. The model of Santa on the music video in the 2007 DVD is off model. 💀 4. Rankin/Bass style Donald Trump is cursed.
I have the 2014 anniversary version along with the set you mentioned at 13:24 (so basically the same thing twice) Never noticed the green clothing error before. I wonder how that happened?
I wish they would release a deluxe edition soundtrack of the 1964 special with alternate takes, TV special scores, the song Fame and Fortune, Hermey and Rudolph’s versions of Why Am I Such A Misfit?, the Weather Report version of We Are Santa’s Elves, the 1968 version of Silver And Gold and the TV special versions of A Holly Jolly Christmas and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer-Finale if they still exist in the vaults.
I think maybe the quiet audio on the one dvd when Rudolph leaves the island was attempting to make the dvd more immersive, like Rudolph is trying not to wake Ucon and Hermie.
I own the 2004 DVD (as well as all the blu-ray versions) and I think my copy must've been a prototype or a faulty copy or something. The package and disc art is exactly the same as the 2004 dvd. But it uses the same disc master from the 2001 DVD. It has the exact same menu as the 2001 DVD and it even includes the Peppermint Mine scene
Ultimately, the problem with home media releases of this and a lot of other animated specials is just that, simply put, corporations don't care about children's media. They'll put out whatever they have and call it good enough, and animation especially rarely gets the treatment it deserves. It's getting better as high quality scans become cheaper and faster to produce, but it's still fairly common to see animation get DNR-ed because the execs think that's what the people want. Plus you add in Rudolph's age and numerous broadcast variations, including sponsor tags that will almost certainly never be seen officially, and you end up with a movie that will probably never have an "ideal" home media release. I'm a big fan of a Charlie Brown Christmas and am in the same situation there - I've resorted to watching an unofficial, unrestored film print to see the special in its unaltered form in high definition.
Good news Rudolph is returning to nbc this december in december 6 I have a feeling they could use the universal print instead of the botched classic media print
I feel like Paramount should’ve released the earliest versions because the special aired on CBS And CBS is owned by Paramount so yeah Or even Warner since Warner had the earliest international DVD rights to the special
Weirdly, that's accurate to the disc! Although the packaging for the 2014 Blu-Ray claims that there are English subtitles and the 2010 release has a CC symbol on the case, neither of these releases includes subtitles on the actual discs themselves. (This was thankfully fixed for the 2018 release.)
You can blame RUclips and their copyright system. I have since re-uploaded the video on Internet Archive so it can still live on. Link: archive.org/details/update-2-all-television-changes-to-rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer-1964
My favorite releases: 1. 1988, 1989, and 1993 VHSs. I really like the unrestored masters for its nostalgia and colors despite being the 1965 version and having a lot of dirt and scratches all over the place. However, I hate it that when Santa Claus yells "MERRRRRRYYY CHRIIIIISTMAAAAS!" for the second time, its so high pitched and sped up that its creepy and sounds wrong. 2. The 2002 DVD. The introduction is great, the Sony Wonder logo gives me nostalgia, the menu is great... The master itself is great, way better than the Golden Books VHS. Its grainy, doesnt have DNR, and despite its flaws, its really watchable. 3. The 4K Ultra HD release. It looks fantastic. There are no unnecessary green colors, and heck, there's finally an aqua jacket on Yukon, but I wish that the scenes with DNR either removes the DNR or are replaced with the upscales versions of the 2002 DVD release master with the colors adjusted to match the colors of the rest. I also wish that "good" isn't clipped. They should've fixed it in the 5.1 surround sound remaster. And tbh, i agree. The Genius DVD is the worse one. I hate how muted the colors look, the green colors should not be in the master, and they look boring. Also, the audio problems are terrible. Even worse, the music video that sucked so bad is included on there. Destiny's Child is fine, but no, that one sucked. Obviously ruined the magic of Rudolph too much.
There’s an earlier Sony Wonder DVD from 2001 that opens with a Pillsbury Christmas commercial before the special begins. The cover art also has the Golden Books pattern on the left side of the cover. Does your copy open with it?
I already knew the special had a few master oddities over the years (*coughs* the 2005 CBS airing), but I didn't think there was this many on each physical release. Looking at the versions I own, on DVD I seem to have the worst print. That being the 2007 Genius release with the grossly faded colors (which I think even I noticed back then). The disc is scratched on mine so it skips a lot on the Island of Misfit Toys song, but with this being a shitty release of the special, it's not really a huge loss as I can now just easily buy a better copy of the special anyway. I've also got a 1993 VHS released by F.H.E., but I don't know where it's at currently. Also now just checking the YTP I did of Rudolph back in 2017, since I usually get my sources from wherever online, I must've have sourced the special from a 2010 blu-ray rip (because I noticed the green on Yukon's clothes throughout).
Oh, yeah, and it's also on the 2010 Vivendi DVD, which is basically just the infamous Genius DVD, (with DVNR nasty muted colors, and green hues on some of the elves and Yukon) except with Vivendi Entertainment slapped on the DVD and case.
In 3 creative segments, not counting the introduction, Dave Burgess (Head of character animation for DreamWorks Animation) teaches the viewer(s) how to draw some of Dave's favorite characters from the special: Rudolph, Hermey and (Bumble) the Abominable Snow Monster.
I have were a couple of misfits, silver and gold, and the final half of a holly jolly Christmas and the whole ending. P.s. the classic media logo had applause and announcer talking about Jimmy Fallon
Now I’m curious! Which version did they broadcast this year on NBC? Or was it an entirely new version? They definitely cut to commercial at different moments than in the original 60’s broadcasts
I made an updated version of my broadcast changes video that talks about NBC's version. From what I saw, it looked like they combined the 4K print with the Deluxe print. But most of the errors from the Deluxe print remain.
Came for the comparison and analysis, stayed for the Mario Kart music. I’m still a little unclear though about whether or not the new complete collection is the best.
I have a Blu-Ray of the special that came in 5-disc set (including Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman, Little Drummer Boy, and Cricket on the Hearth) in a Steelbook case. It has Universal branding when playing. I'm assuming it is either the 2018 Blu-Ray or a Blu-Ray version of the 2021 4K. I'm inclined to believe it is the latter since I bought it in 2023 from GRUV.
Hmmm guess I have a reprint copy of the 2002 DVD because the copy I have of the 2004 DVD (which does still have the Destiny’s Child CD by the way) DEFINITELY has the Arthur Rankin intro!
never could i have imagined there was a community that discussed the qualities of all the home releases of rudolph, nor that i had been watching the "worst" one this whole time

@@charliesummers2010Ah, I wonder though why it’s not listed on the Golden Books back cover but on Sony Wonder’s? Was it a mistake?
Do they have the same countdown at the beginning like the VHS version?
Thank you for making Rudolph content. Rudolph is one of my special interests and i don't really have friends who love it as much as i do. So thank you for making this content, i really appreciate it!
When you said we will never get a perfect release of Rudolph, I will make one. RIGHT NOW.
I wish you the best.
NO JUST STAY WITH POKIMON CACHINCO LOOSER
And it will be thx certified
I will use the master from the 2002 dvd and upscale it to 4k. And the audio will be the 2018 universal print for most of it, the good part from the line “well as good as everyone feels” will be taken from the 1965 print, and the last few frames of the sleigh ride shot will be from the 1993 vhs but I will remove the scratches and dirt. And the ending audio will be from the 1989 vhs (except for Santa shouting out merry Christmas.) and that will be it.
And pls someone find a free 4k upsaler and video scratch remover so I could make it. RELEASE DATE: CHRISTMAS 2025
Have you heard that Rudolph is finally returning to NBC?
We sure did, Rudolph came back on NBC.
I love this channel!! Great job man. Instant fan of your work.
Your missing one. There was one that came in a red, box. That folded open. It had Rudolph, frosty, Santas coming to town. Plus frosty returns and little drummer boy. And even came with a soundtrack dvd
I wasn't missing it, I just didn't need it.
@@KingLaneCreations now that I've seen the video fully. Which Rudolph DVD is the one in this set?
I'm pretty sure the 2004 DVD.
This is a pretty good video! I would like to see what other movies have the best physical release out there! This is just so well done!😁
I heard the special is coming back to NBC for its 60th anniversary.
Is there a dvd release that includes the cut scene (Yukon C. discovering the peppermint mine) put back into the show, rather than as an extra feature? There was such a version on RUclips, before it was taken down (I can't find it, anyway).
Pretty much every DVD of Rudolph includes that scene, with the 2004 DVD being the only exception.
@@KingLaneCreations Thanks for the quick reply, and thanks for this review. I've watched this show for 55 years or so, and still love it!
Glad I have the Sony 2002 dvd version on vhs & the 4K so I have the best ones to watch period.
You should do a video on year without Santa clause
Getting flashbacks of Totally Not Mark’s Dragon Ball Home Release video.
Thank you for the exhaustive research. I'm so confused. I have 2-3 versions and feel like I need to get more to make sure I cover every single aspect of this film.
4:27 Classic Media is the company that owns many other franchises like Rocky & Bullwinkle, Underdog, and even VeggieTales!
Dreamworks doesn’t own Rocky and Bullwinkle anymore. They’re under the hands of WildBrain.
and Lamb Chop.
The There's Always Tomorrow scene on the 2007 Genius Ent. release appears to have been sourced from an cleaner audio copy that's also inexplicably louder than the rest of the special's audio.
BTW, their "Original Christmas Classics" release does use the 2007 "remaster".
Whyyy weren’t you at elf practice 😡
I liked your review on the extremely rare LP mode copy of the Rudolph VHS from 1988. By the way, have you thought at all about putting a label on it or taking the record tab out? Thanks a lot, and nice DVD collection by the way.
I got the complete collection 18 film on Blu-ray
I have a rebranded one of those bluray players. Bought it when I was taking a several day train ride.
I’m grateful that I grew up with the 2002 DVD
4. Rankin/Bass style Donald Trump is cursed.
I have the 2014 anniversary version along with the set you mentioned at 13:24 (so basically the same thing twice) Never noticed the green clothing error before. I wonder how that happened?
The version I own is on laserdisc with frosty and drummer boy.
Nice, I heard that it's one of the better releases of Drummer Boy.
I was wondering, did it have the FHE paintbrush logo?
A question how come Hermey when he passes the bumble and when he puts an ornaments on the tree does he not have a mouth or eyebrows?!
Now this is my kind of content
I respect your opinion but I can't find the Sunday Wonder or I don't have a 4K but I have the DVD release of Rudolph from 2018.
I have the Universal Pictures Home Entertainment DVD.
I think it's one of the best if not the best version out there.
Hmmm, I wonder if early copies of the 2004 release used the same ISO on the older releases?
That happens to me
I had the DVD at 6:16. So nostalgic.
I think I would choose the 2002 sony wonder dvd.
This special is turning *60* this year!
23:01 Wow, I didn't know they had 4K Blu-ray releases in 2002. Lol
I still have the og vhs & thats the best!
Good news
Rudolph is returning to nbc this december in december 6
I have a feeling they could use the universal print instead of the botched classic media print
I feel like Paramount should’ve released the earliest versions because the special aired on CBS
And CBS is owned by Paramount so yeah
Or even Warner since Warner had the earliest international DVD rights to the special
Need one of these vids for the original grinch
I don't own any of the home video releases so, I'm kinda suprised the version I downloaded online was the 2010 Blu-Ray Rip (only without subtitles)
What happened to other Rudolph video you made where you talked about the changes made to the special in terms of broadcast and re-releases?
You can blame RUclips and their copyright system. I have since re-uploaded the video on Internet Archive so it can still live on.

10:11 It does. It uses the 2007 version, all the things you pointed out made me realize that I’ve spent my entire life watching the worst version LMAO
The VHS is the best because it’s the version I remember from TV
My favorite releases:
1. 1988, 1989, and 1993 VHSs.
Do you know if he covers the version in the rankin bass complete collection?I know he mentioned it at the beginning but does he go into detail?
9:42 *WHY WEREN'T YOU AT ELF PRACTICE*
There’s an earlier Sony Wonder DVD from 2001 that opens with a Pillsbury Christmas commercial before the special begins. The cover art also has the Golden Books pattern on the left side of the cover. Does your copy open with it?
It doesn't.
I try to find All Broadcast Changes Made To Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and I can't find it on your channel. What happen to the video?
Blame NBCUniversal.
@@KingLaneCreations You mean that the video is removed by NBCUniversal?
@@coyotemontana4558 I'm afraid so.
@@coyotemontana4558 Even worse than removed, it's been blocked by them via RUclips's blocking process.
Why?
I have the 2007 DVD sealed.
Why did you deleted the broadcast changes video of Rudolph?
I didn't delete it, it got blocked worldwide.
Why?
i can’t find the rudolph difference video
Here you go.

What about Classic Media's The Original Television Christmas Classics 4 DVD Set. It's the one I had growing up but I don't remember its release date
2:39 ayo is that Toontown music I hear?
So, is the 2002 DVD the only version with “Fame & Fortune”, or just the best version with that song?
The Fame & Fortune Song is also on the 2004 and 2007 DVDs as well.
...and the Golden Books DVD from 2000.
Oh, yeah, and it's also on the 2010 Vivendi DVD, which is basically just the infamous Genius DVD, (with DVNR nasty muted colors, and green hues on some of the elves and Yukon) except with Vivendi Entertainment slapped on the DVD and case.
This special just turned 60 today.
13:13 I wonder what the Learn to Draw feature is like?
In 3 creative segments, not counting the introduction, Dave Burgess (Head of character animation for DreamWorks Animation) teaches the viewer(s) how to draw some of Dave's favorite characters from the special: Rudolph, Hermey and (Bumble) the Abominable Snow Monster.
@@D.W.Granata I see.
The 2002 Sony wonder/Golden Books DVD and the current release of it is better than the Genius Entertainment DVD release. (Who agrees with me on that?)
Unibersal better re-release the 4K with Dolby Vision.
They are re-releasing Shaun of the Dead with it.
6:15 That's the DVD Version of Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer I remember having
Since Rudolph is moving back to NBC, do you think they’ll use the 2022 4K Blue Ray master/transfer?
I hope so.
With rankin bass logo and all errors fixed with 1965 end audio and no universal logo
@@KingLaneCreations It appears/seems NBC used the 2018 Blue Ray master/transfer instead (which Freeform uses).
I have recordings of it
I have were a couple of misfits, silver and gold, and the final half of a holly jolly Christmas and the whole ending. P.s. the classic media logo had applause and announcer talking about Jimmy Fallon
The Blu-ray version of the complete collection has the 4K transfer of Rudolph from the 4K release.
Can you do a DVD blu ray comparison of a charlie brown christmas
14:55 who signed your DVD here?
Rick Goldschmidt. I mentioned him a few times in the video, but yeah I have met him a few times and got him to sign my Deluxe Edition DVD.
IS THE MATERIAL ON BOTH SIDES OF THESE DISCS IF SO I DONT WANT THEM.
Classic media 2005
The 2004 Sony Wonder DVD is definitely my favorite, as that's the first one I had as a kid and I have the most nostalgia for it.
