He definitely understands the character of Bella. I think she is much like a neurodivergent person is in neurotypical society. Punished for being herself and being honest, while beautifully enjoying wonderful things and feeling the injustice of the world deeply. Duncan is very neurotypical (selfish, knows how to manipulate society for selfish benefits, etc.)
I had this read on it as well and haven’t seen any commentary about it through that lense! I’m an AudHD therapist so thought it was just me projecting the world I’m in onto this movie.
