RV or van living are similar to living on a boat. Does that appeal to you?
Sadly though it is harder to do an all electric RV vs an all electric sailboat (or low fossil fuels anyway, even with diesel most of your propulsion will be wind in a sailboat)
While I was working I used to listen your videos and I was admiring your creativity. Now I am starting to watch and listen carefully allover from Day 1. Because around a month ago, an American couple in San Francisco heard my story about my love of sailing and has decided to give me free their 1978 Willard 30. I live in Toronto, Canada. I have 10 months to plan, do/arrange some repairs, to move South and eventually go to Mediterrian. I would like to follow your repair steps.
Yahoo! Go for it! Video-log EVERYTHING, edit it later. You'll be surprised how useful video-logs can be weeks/months/years later.
How much sailing have you done already? A Willard 30 is some boat for a first timer; don't let that put you off though.
A basic course in electrical/electronics is invaluable (not just for boats), as too basic/survival navigating; a) just in case your tech fails, b) you'll appreciate much better how the tech works and how to make best use. AND you wont get ripped-off/held-to-ransom by folks when something simple but important goes 'pop' etc.
Keep us posted. Set up a link/site etc. People will volunteer advice and 'mistakes to avoid', don't underestimate the 'been there, done that' experience/advice.

Power always includes time. So 15kW is instantaneous power. 15kWh (the h is for hours) is stored power, meaning that you can deliver 15kW for one hour, or 7.5kW for two hours, etc. Just like batteries.

This video came just in time, when I'm about to start my own solar sailboat project (a lot of blueprints but no boat yet). You guys have been proving that people use more energy than they actually need. Cheers!
Great video! Being an engineer I understood your presentation even if usage of the terms was incorrect. Let me try to help. 1,000 watts is a kW or kilowatt. That is power. Power used over time is energy or 1 kW used for 1 hour is 1 kWh or 1 kilowatt hour. For DC 1 watt is 1 volt times 1 amp. So, 48 volts times 20 amps is 960 watts or 0.960 kW. Using this power for 2 hours is 0.960 kW times 2 hours or 1.92 kWh. I hope this makes sense to you. Again, I loved the video!

Yes, we understand the difference, but this video was for those who might not. Hense the use of terms like "using 1kw in an hour" instead of "1kWh". Perhaps we'll make another video trying to explain that as lesson 102.
It is obvious that you understand the terms, Dan, as what you say is accurate. The problem is that using incorrect units is misleading, and highly annoying the the ocd of us. Also, i think it confuses the ones that want to learn.
No it doesn’t. Dan’s delivery is more lyrical and that makes it easier for a layman to get it.
If his terminology is off, that will self-correct for the layman as time goes by. However,

After working as an off grid power consultant for many years you have given a really good tutorial on how the system works and how much energy you use. I’m also keen to hear how you go with propeller regeneration. That’s a great idea. The only nit pic is energy used daily being kWh not just kW. My boss would always pull me up on it. Great work guys. A lot of the time you saw kW, you actually mean kW-h. Not power, but energy: power over time. Usually the fridge/freezer takes up most of the energy budget on a boat, despite being a low-power appliance (compared to a circular saw, microwave, or electric kettle). Mostly just a trigger for energy pedants. Thanks for the real-world summary!

Now really! I don‘t know what you are complaining about. If you look real closely you can clearly see Kika‘s perfect
new fridge in it‘s full splendor! And it was fully revealed from the unveiling to the TLC to the compartment and the modification of the too small box for a full extension slide out panel. We even saw the bottom screwed for safe storage.
Now go back to the thumbnail and enjoy the much better appearance of that part of the galley! If anything looks perfect it’s that new fridge and we saw all of it in the video.

I am studying how to build a solar panel, battery bank array, and this video gave me a lot of ideas. I SPECIALLY appreciate the diagram on where the voltage controller goes in relation to the battery bank. The distribution of the inverters and the DC converters were eye opening. Excellent help. Thank you.
I myself have a sailboat and I am also going to go all electric. You mentioned that you want a windturbine on you boat and I have some tips for you if you would like to hear some. I have some experience with windturbine and have contacted many companies and have my own ideas how to do it. I am an electric engineer and have a passion for renewable energy.
1. Going with a windturbine is really a great way to get energy to your boat, one of the best. Solar panels is really inefficient with about 15-18% efficiency at optimal condition. When living up north like me, or areas with less sun hours, it is not much energy you can get on few solar panels. And boats don't have much space, you can only put a few panels. So solar panels isn't that great at all when you think about it. Still it is the most common off-grid power source.
A wind turbine on the other hand is more efficient and very space efficient on what you fit on a small place like a boat. You can lots of power from one windturbine instead of having to cover the boat stern to bow with solar panels.
2. Bigger windturbine exist but they can't be found at your hardware store or hobbyist boat store. They are usually sold directly from the OEM manufacturer and many chinese manufacturers are coming up now that make bigger turbines with 1-10kw power. I have some contacts and have myself contacted a few companies. I could give you some links.
3. Noise is something to consider when you have a windturbine on a boat. Even small turbines make noise. And noise can be transferred. I have heard noise on an boat that the owner put the turbine on the mast. Because the mast is fixed to the boat in to the cabin the noise is transferred thought vibrations down the mast to the cabin and heard even inside. So try to have the windturbine away from the sleeping cabin is best.
4. VAWT is less noisy. Vertical Axis Wind Turbine is a thing and have now got better designs then previous VAWT so they are not much less efficient then a normal wind turbine. They're less noisy, safer for birds, less ugly design and could even be better on a boat that can get the wind from more infrequent directions.
5. Wind power makes sense on a sailboat. A sailboat is used in windy weather. The main thing about sailboats is the wind. You already have sails to make wind energy to forward moving energy. So putting a extra thing that takes the wind energy that isn't used by the sail to make electric energy to power an electric motor is almost the same as putting on an extra sail to move to boat forward. A sail isn't really very efficient (1.2 lift coefficient), so to use a windturbine to power an electric motor is not that inefficient as it sounds. That is actually a thing and there are boats that use only one big wind turbine instead of sails to power the boat forward. Search for windmill boat. They have the advantage that they can "sail" in any direction to the wind. If I could I would do something like that in my boat.
6. Wind turbine together with solar is a good combination. When going off-grid, you need to spread out the energy source as much as you can. To have multiple sources is best to have redundancy if one source isn't optimal because of the conditions. If the sun gone for some days or the no good wind, it is good to have both as sources for power as they help each other when the other fails.
7. A water turbine during sailing isn't the best logical thing. Use the electric motor as a generator when sailing is an extra feature, but it isn't the one of the first things you should do. People even buy small hydro turbines and retrofit them on the rear. But if you think about it, it is not that logical and efficient. When sailing you use the wind energy to get the boat up to speed. And to break that speed that you try to maintain with a water turbine sounds not like the best and straight forward thing to do. The wind energy get transformed to the sails then to moving energy to the boat then to moving to the prop and to electric energy to the water turbine. Instead you can go from same source, wind more directly to electricity with a wind turbine. The less stages you take the better. And it won't break the speed of the boat. You could even get more speed if the windturbine drives the electric motor if you haven't reach maximum hullspeed.
8. Going with higher voltage then 12 or 24 or 48v can be a benefit if have bigger setups. Equipment like inverters and motor are little bit more efficient and have motor often have more torque. Cables can be smaller more safe, less currant.
9. Electric motors is great for boats and can save lots of money compared of the amount of diesel per hour it uses, average medium size sailboat about 6l/h. When looking for a motor don't compare KW power to the HP of an ICE engine. Compare the torque. Also be in mind of peak vs continuous. A electric motor is always rated in continuous output. ICE is always peak.

This is intriguing to me also. But my interest is more in replacing tired diesel engines/fuel tanks, standing/running rigging, and sails and go all-electric. I'm not sure we are there yet but it sounds like a cool idea in principle.
The trick is storing enough energy and generating enough energy. Electric motors and controls for prime movers are a very well known commodity. Non-fuel based options for electric generation on a vessel are wind, sun, and, using regeneration, tidal. Perhaps hydrogen fuel cells but that is an area I haven't explored.
The wind turbines definitely have solar beat with respect to generation capacity. They also have solar beat with respect to an environmental and financial payback period in larger systems. I would imagine that is also true is smaller systems.
I see big solar-powered catamarans but I'm skeptical. A few experimental autonomous vessels have been solar-powered. Still, I just don't see how they could generate enough power to be a prime mover.
I will look up sail ships. Sounds interesting. A big VAWT on a ship with the generator/battery and electrics contained in the keel sounds cool. One would have to be very careful above deck :)

just want to say thanks for inspiring me to take the plunge, I converted my 30 footer into a solar electric sailer as well, currently doing an airhead composting toilet conversion also from the original direct discharge sullage tank system.

I like your new Nav Table. A suggestion, put rubber place mats under laptop or plates while at sea to stop items sliding around. I also like the round edged Nav table which will prevent injuries or getting hurt while at sea. Great improvements has been done on Uma. Congratulations to Dan and Kika.

Awesome choice of vid. Van build and boat refitters are gonna love you for laying it out so clearly. Quick suggestion: Why not keep a small 2kW generator stowed away with a gerry can of fuel? it is a great emergency measure. If you take a lightning strike or some problem means you can't run your pumps, this will be a backup. However, when times are good, you can wire it to your charge controller and fill your batteries when you don't see sun for a few days. This is how silent-yachts works their power generation when the sun don't shine.

Steve I have an honest question and I don´t want to sound like a gramma nazi. You use "You´re" instead of "Your" in your second sentence. Sound it the same to you and so you write it interchangeably or do´s it look the same to you. I have seen this a lot and I`am a bit puzzled by this, I mean "You`re" is two words and "Your" is one . English is my second language, so I don`t know all the fine detail of spelling and writing.

RE: Computer power
Every computer I have ever worked on takes 12v dc at the input. All adapters take 110v ac and 220v ac (every adapter will take either) and outputs 12v dc. There is a power loss in the voltage step down and ac to dc conversion. Have you thought about wiring your computers into a 12v dc connection?
