Ok, but real talk-"planning to start, not to finish" is the mind shift that I need the most. So much of how I organize my day and prioritize tasks revolve around whether or not I have the time to finish it in a single sitting. And if I can't, then I put it off (aka: procrastinate) until I have the time or sacrifice something else (usually sleep) to make the time for it. And it's so so bad. Like, if I have a task that will take an hour to do, but I have to go somewhere in 30 minutes, I will choose to stare at the ceiling instead of putting in 30 minutes of work and come back to it later. 🙈🙈🙈 If I can get that switch to happen for me, I think it will make a big difference.
I struggle with this too. I have a hard time both getting started on things due to overestimating their difficulty AND because I HATE being interrupted.
I do a lot of complex work. Stuff that can take years to complete. If you think you'll ever finish, you'll work yourself to death. Some problems are so big that you can spend a lifetime on them and hardly make a dent. That's okay though. You're still making progress. And remember to celebrate the small victories, it makes it possible to keep going.
What I got from this video is to increase your mind's ability to focus: • Don't multitask, only do one thing at a time for a set time block. • Spend a little time prepping for a task if it's big to get the ball rolling and make it seem smaller, like getting all your materials together. • Arrange your environment so its easy to achieve your goals. That way there's less resistance to get started. • Be patient, your brain will rewire itself, your focus will improve over time.
Watching this with my short attention span issue and constantly getting distracted and needed to go back every few minutes after realizing that I'm getting distracted.

I too suffer with low attention span like most of us, but I actually wrote down everything in this video and made hand-written notes actually focusing just on the video and writing. I decided to spend the entire day almost to think of practical, personal and real steps I can take to get back to locking in on my actual work and block out my personal set of daily distractions. Spending an entire day to plan out months of focus buidling/training was really worth it for me. Thank you Justin as always.
Great video. I didn't realize during my most productive times are when I know the day before exactly what I need to do. And I mentally plan my approach. Also the eliminating distractions. When I have what I know Im going to listen to during my productive time, I'm more effective than trying to find something every time a podcast, video, or song ends.
justin has expounded on a matter of great importance in this "age". more than it is practical, this problem is points to the broader landscape of short-format content and quick doses of satisfaction. Thank you Justin, truly. Your videos are life changing. Breathing is a great example and gateway into noticing distractions, but are you referring to the "target" as just being something to help train our attention span and practice, or are these targets also activities that end up serving as the goal task for us to focus on? For example, I do a lot of meal prepping and cook using novel recipes. I often have to remove distractions (like listening to music or conversations) so I can actually focus on not losing track of time, making sure I don't burn stuff, chopping every vegetable under the sun, cleaning as I go etc. It feels challenging to have to stay focused on it for longer periods, but the more I meal prep in this way, the less stressful I find it. I wonder if that's utilising the same principle?
Justin I think the #1 problem with focus in the classroom is the addiction to socmed. With all your great tips as you have said, without addressing the issue it's just a band-aid. Soc-med algorithm is the money-maker but also the brain killer. The 2 min algorithm in most apps now is noticeable.
I have a process where I meticulously break down each task using the divide-and-conquer strategy, clearly identifying upstream and downstream elements. This approach streamlines my workflow and enhances focus and cohesion. Finally, I organize my tasks using SCRUM, which allows me to maintain focus and adapt to changes swiftly. I will integrate some of your recommendations into my process.

this might be a bit unrelated, but i kept seeing Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki popping up in comments everywhere, so i decided to check it out. the book’s all about working on your energy and presence, and it’s way more practical than i expected. after applying what it teaches, i’ve noticed people are more drawn to me, and i feel more confident without trying too hard. it’s been such a low-key but powerful shift
The sad thing that i learnt from this video is that I'm interested in learning how to learn everything, but not interested in in learning anything apart from this😂
Metacognition is a field. Also, Sung's videos are really nice to watch/listen to, and the tips he give are not just broad stroke bandaids. That might also play into why you like this topic so much.
Why would you want to learn anything specific other than learning? Unless your boss or teacher is threatening you with a gun, you'll never learn anything anyway
I have pretty intense ADHD and the symptomology and I can't direct or control the task switching and the penalty time ends up being more than any amount of time I spend on different tasks. With treatment it's easier to control but I need to learn how it actually works physiologically. Thanks for this
i know this isn’t what the video’s about, but i had to mention how i kept seeing Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki in comments everywhere. curiosity got the better of me, and i finally read it. it’s wild how much it changes your mindset and the way you come across to others. it’s not about pretending to be confident-it’s about genuinely building that energy so it shows naturally. definitely worth all the buzz it’s been getting.
I’m pretty sure Dr Newport in his latest book stepped back on the idea that Deep Work is related to flow. I’ve heard him say that flow is incompatible with deep work. Deep work is about learning and improving and is therefore mentally fatiguing. Flow is is the result of deep work where you have done the hard work and now you don’t have think about it.
As medical doctor you never talked about tangible brain health and nutrition (i.e vitamin, minerals deficiency, choline, protein(bdnf etc.) Because i was extremely low on vitamin d, i didn't know it causes depression And low on b12 whose deficiency is disasterous for your not only brain but whole nervous system because its function is to repair and form myelin sheath which is part of nerve cell But after 1 month taking vitamin d and b12 for deficiency My migraine is gone , no brain fog, headache, lethargy is almost gone Then i researched more on vitamin , minerals and other nutrition I also take omega 3 capsule nowadays So I suggest you talk about brain health and brain nutrition and diet.
Hey Justin, love your content. Could you make a video on reading news and keeping up with a landscape that is updated daily? Especially for students of politics and business it's pretty tough because newspapers aren't always very concise and to the point. I found that speedreading a WSJ or even a NYT is pretty much a waste of time. I feel like reading a newspaper requires lots of filtering. Filtering what to read first and foremost. Then there's news that are irrelevant, there's news that have temporary value and there's data or facts that can be extremely valuable longterm. Would love to know more about your daily news intake and how you process it.
i found it very interesting that the long term focus training practice you mentioned is the exact practice i know as just meditation. and yet you never mentioned the word once. thinking about it, i think that's a pretty smart decision: instead of instructing people to start practicing something that they could already be biased against, you directly explain what the practice entails and how it works to aid them. wonderful strategy!
Hi Justin, I’m really interested in signing up for one of your courses, but I have a few concerns that are holding me back. The course you’re offering seems almost too good to be true, so I’d love some clarification. 1. Pricing: You offer a 4-month course for 166 AUD and a 12-month course for 400 AUD. Could you explain the key differences between these two options? Also, I assume you mean AUD and not USD-could you confirm? 2. Course Format: Could you clarify how the course is delivered? Will I learn one-on-one with a tutor, or is it based on pre-recorded video lessons? Additionally, how many hours per week should I expect to dedicate to the course? A detailed weekly breakdown would be very helpful. 3. Additional Costs: Are there any additional payments required beyond the course fee, or does the price include everything? 4. Equipment: I don’t own a tablet. Will a tablet be necessary for the mind-mapping techniques, or is there an option to use paper instead? 5. Privacy Concerns: For one-on-one tutoring, will I need to keep my camera on at all times? 6. Time Zone Considerations: I live in a different time zone. Does the one-on-one tutoring accommodate various time zones? (Europe) 7. Satisfaction Guarantee: If I’m not satisfied with the course, what is your refund policy? How long does it usually take for students to see results so I can determine if the course is right for me? 8. Course Content: I’ve noticed that many of your RUclips videos repeat similar points without introducing new material. Does the course provide significantly more value and content than what is available on your channel? Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response! convincing my parents to spend 400usd on a course is not easy 😂
i know this isn’t related to the video, but i’ve been seeing Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki mentioned in so many comment sections lately. i thought it was just hype until i finally gave it a shot. honestly, the book blew me away. it’s all about understanding your energy and how to naturally draw people and opportunities toward you. it’s not some overnight fix, but you start to notice little shifts in how people respond to you, and it just builds from there.
A big way to interpret breathing is "updates." You get distracted and realize that, so instead of trying to futility pull yourself back on task.. you take a moment to breathe. In the breathing, you recognize what you were distracted with, what you should be doing, and then when you feel like you've fully restarted and came back(you can breathe as long as you want until you're comfortable with going back to work), you can resume. You've restarted your biological computer which takes time, and applied an update as you restarted. Training that muscle reflex to acknowledge when you're distracted and subtly bring yourself back on track will help you immediately start to decompress and reorient your mind faster each time, to the point where as soon as you're off track.. you can immediately bring yourself back on track and decompress much quicker to reorient your flow state back into focus. It takes A LOT of time. Im talking *months..* but it's a good technique to invest in for good focus and overall stress balance.
Hello! I think this video should have been done without commercials. Reason being is because ppl with really bad attitude spans will get annoyed and click off. There are so many things that cause short attention spans. ADHA, PTSD, depression etc.

Great tips in that video. Funny how preloading is so useful even when you don’t realize you’ve done it. Like changing into your running clothes. What are your thoughts on burnout or perceived burnout. You really want to jump into a task but mentally (or physically) you’re tired. Obviously sleep, diet, and balance are top of the list but have you experienced burnout and how did you solve it.
Putting target or objective become ones that are mentioned over and over again either part of short-term or long term training. The target is the "magic flip."
10:07 The only multitasking I’ve mastered is watching Justin’s videos while ironing clothes. Honestly, I have no idea how 23 minutes flew by-before I knew it, the next video had already started!

That’s is a problem for most of us I think. Procrastination is such a negative feature in our minds it can get very deep going into it for each of us.

The sad thing that i learnt from this video is that I'm interested in learning how to learn everything, but not interested in in learning anything apart from this😂
@@nithish1517 it’s social media that disturb your brain 🧠
Metacognition is a field. Also, Sung's videos are really nice to watch/listen to, and the tips he give are not just broad stroke bandaids. That might also play into why you like this topic so much.
Why would you want to learn anything specific other than learning? Unless your boss or teacher is threatening you with a gun, you'll never learn anything anyway
@@rasmusturkka480 that’s not really making sense. What do you mean?
I just tried his guidance today
And that way amazing I was like a weapon that I never been that disciplined before
Trust me guys
Just try it
As medical doctor you never talked about tangible brain health and nutrition (i.e vitamin, minerals deficiency, choline, protein(bdnf etc.)
Because i was extremely low on vitamin d, i didn't know it causes depression
And low on b12 whose deficiency is disasterous for your not only brain but whole nervous system because its function is to repair and form myelin sheath which is part of nerve cell
But after 1 month taking vitamin d and b12 for deficiency
My migraine is gone , no brain fog, headache, lethargy is almost gone
Then i researched more on vitamin , minerals and other nutrition
I also take omega 3 capsule nowadays
So I suggest you talk about brain health and brain nutrition and diet.
Today, i aim to learn a lot today. But, this video caught my attention. After watching it, i forgot what i planned and played for entire day.
Thank you Dr. Sung. ☺
Thank you!
Hi Justin,
I’m really interested in signing up for one of your courses, but I have a few concerns that are holding me back.
(Europe)
Life saver
Thanks dr Justin
i know this isn’t related to the video, but i’ve been seeing Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki mentioned in so many comment sections lately. i thought it was just hype until i finally gave it a shot. honestly, the book blew me away. it’s all about understanding your energy and how to naturally draw people and opportunities toward you. it’s not some overnight fix, but you start to notice little shifts in how people respond to you, and it just builds from there.
A big way to interpret breathing is "updates."
You get distracted and realize that, so instead of trying to futility pull yourself back on task.. you take a moment to breathe.
The 5:00 minute mark is what got my attention. Your attention grabbing is great 🙌🏽⚡️🙌🏽
Very helpful for me. Thank you 🙏🏾
Again, thank you.
😂.I used to believe am not cut out for books but it all adds up now. Am grateful JUSTIN
Hello! I think this video should have been done without commercials. Reason being is because ppl with really bad attitude spans will get annoyed and click off. There are so many things that cause short attention spans. ADHA, PTSD, depression etc.
I like your videos soo much 😊
Please make a detailed video for revesion and exam prep for school
And for timetable for study
Please sir😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank u for this.
Thank you Justin ❤
I've been able to completely stop sleeping with the help of this video.
Basically you train your focus muscle by practicing meditation.
Basically, but saying it in a fancier way😂
This is great.
Thank God ... your video pop up on my feed again❤... I watch your video 3 4 weeks ago but forgot to subscribe and don't know ur channel name ... but I found you again.... now subscribed❤ sorry for my English.... when I missed ur lecture and don't know ur channel name I was searching typing jake jacob joshua ..😂I only remember name of ur first letter .... thank god I found u🤪
Many thanks Justin.
❤❤❤ thank you for thus video.
Wonderful.
10:07 The only multitasking I’ve mastered is watching Justin’s videos while ironing clothes. Honestly, I have no idea how 23 minutes flew by-before I knew it, the next video had already started!
Thank you Mr sung
Wordy beginning but glad I stuck around
The singular for 'criteria' is 'criterion'.
10:35 literally calling me out as i take a break from schoolwork, so i can finish this video while i clean 😂
1-8 is to aid in focus. Focus is a skill one must develop. That is why mindfulness has a religious following: it is focus.
