When I was in South Florida in the '80s some guys released tropical fish into canals West of Miami up and into Palm Beach County than waited until a population established itself than would catch them to sell into the aquarium trade. They were very secretive about their sites to keep out competitors, they made a lot of money doing this and put a lot of legitimate growers out of business as they had no overhead. This is one reason the Everglades is full of exotic fish. They are probably still doing it. Shame!

Anyone who ate a banana, mostly. Every species has their origin story. Brown anoles, tegus, iguanas came with all the fruit imported from South America. Pigs with the spanish explorers. Curly tailed lizards were purposely released by sugarcane farmers in the 40s. I could go all day, pet owners get the blame because it's an easy scape goat. In reality it's us as consumers that brought them in. Hell the peacock bass was released by the government to raise tourism. The worst invasive species ever came from Egypt and is the cat but no politician is gonna touch that with a 10 ft pole.

They forget to mention domestic cats. Cats are known to kill many different types of birds when the owner let it run free. Maybe they should use cats to get rid of the peacock.

A cat won't do anything to a peacock. A cat will play and torture a bird that is much smaller and poses no threat to them. All you would do is kill more and more poor birds.

We in Florida need to promote these fish and get them on every menu. Catch lion fish and give the snapper and grouper a break. Get the restaurants to start serving and let the spear fishermen make some $.
Or someone start a business to let tourists spearfish them, and then have a grill out at the end of the day!
the green lizard is almost gone due to the invasives
Green anode is native. The brown anole is non-native from Bahamas. I see brown anoles all the time every time I step out my door since the 1980s. I've only ever seen 1 green anole in my life and that was about a year ago on my porch also.
The brown anole out competes and out produces the green anole and they eat young green anoles. and they don't stand a chance of surviving. If I spent a day chasing the brown ones just around my house area, I'd probably catch 20-50 of them and there'd be more tomorrow to go after and again the day after its so common. Next common to find are house geckos, also non-native and everywhere. I've never seen the native reef gecko at all.

lion fish did not enter Florida through the tropical fish trade. They were introduced by major hotels in Bermuda releasing their eggs by the millions yearly.

These animals should never have been pets. They are wild animals and need to stay in their native homes. They are devastating the Everglades and much of South Florida.
That isn’t the real lesson. It’s not to OWN any exotic foreign animal. It should be illegal.

I moved away from florida for 18 years. Now that I'm back I see theres no way to stop the invasive species from wiping out our native species. Many species will go the way of the carolina parakeet and ivory billed woodpecker.

How foolish!!! Selling his "catch" as pets so that they can multiply and overwhelm their owners only to be released into the wild in order to exponentially increase the problem. Cats are also invasive! I don't know if someone just let out their pregnant cat, but I remember not ever seeing stray cats before. All of a sudden kittens and cats appear. My dogs have chased them away, but now that I have been gardening. More birds are coming to my garden. So now I'm trying to plant native plants for them. I've had hummingbirds , butterflies, and honeybees in my area. I'm trying to provide for them and me, but those cats just keep coming. Now I'm going to put a bird house that will be put up right on the side of my garage. There is a big tree I have there, but no branches or anything will be near the birdhouse. That way there won't be any access for the cats. Plus my dogs roam around there too so they would have protection I guess you can say. Some of the birds are smart though. One made a nest like on the top edge on the inside of my garage so no cat can get in there. I leave the garage door open because my dogs sleep in there and get in and out when they need to go to the bathroom. A bird goes to sleep inside the garage where my dogs are sleeping. So there is no way for any cats to get in there. Bird is completely protected while being inside. My dogs are angels they keep the cats away and leave the birds alone. I still have issues though because while my dogs are sleeping is when the cats in my area take advantage.
the cat problem is a big one and it saddens me how people don't see it. Birds are my favourite creatures in the whole world, anyone who cares for them r my friends too

I'm a Native American, and a can say these Animals are not the only invasive species that don't belong here... And our quality of life has been affected greatly.
Your people came from Asia. Before that, the Asians came from Africa. There are no native humans that evolved in North America because there are no native Apes here. Education...get some.

Most of the evidence is pointing in the direction of the Indigenous people who buried there dead like that during that time frame. I have yet to come across where they have DNA tested the remains suggesting the six individuals, found at Manasota key, were of European DNA. So please post your source/ link. Here are mine..

I might add i have watched the youtube Doc on this and it too has said it is only speculation that can not be proven.( the DNA Test.) Its also funny to me that Europeans decent people always think they were the only race to make stone age tools. Give me a break.
I never dreamed of ever releasing any of my fish in the wild. When I had a fish that I couldn't care for and give away or sell, I put them in the freezer. It's the most humane way I've read to euthanize a fish because they don't feel it. I hope this is true. I do a lot of research on a species before I buy it too, that's the best thing to do with ANY pet. Read up on it and make sure you can foster it for it's entire life.
It sucks but I think brutally eradicating these species is the best choice. They're not extinct where they came from so no need to get rid of them in Florida.
Peacocks and Iguanas would not be very hard to shoot the hell out of them. Just start using them for target practice ffs. When hearts start bleeding, problems will ensue.
We got laws in florida. You can't be shooting guns lawfully in city limits. Lol. And we got cruelty to animals laws. And while you can shoot iguana or peacocks, if you aren't dispatching them humanely you can be charged so you can't be winging them. Also you have to check traps regularly so they don't suffer in them if you trap them. Laws laws laws.
I don't know about peacocks but as far as iguanas whenever it gets 40F and lower, they paralyze and drop and can't move until they warm up. Any time it gets that cold at night I get the mag light and go look around my property and dispatch them and take the legs and tail to eat and throw the rest away and I've told my neighbors. It's kept it under control near me, I rarely see them now in my neighborhood for the last few years. It's like chicken wings or frog legs.
I can't go all over Florida though doing it. And I'm not sure many people know about them paralyzing with it gets cold but they just freeze up and can't move. No chasing involved. However, once they warm up they zip off again and it doesn't stay cold long enough for them to die off.
Bang em on the head hard with a fish bat and it's done. Then harvest what's edible, there's no meat on the head or body they are all organ and bone and skin. But the legs and tail are good eating meat grilled like kabobs or battered and fried.
I do frogs in water bringing the temperature up ever so slightly. They seem happy.
Worst of'em all is the domestic cat...
When things turn bad, then they'll do something about it cause it will hurt their pockets.
Yeah but also realize there is a lot of money in predicting catastrophes. If scientist can get politicians to believe in a disaster, the gov. grants start to flow.

Lionfish in fact DO bite live bait presented on hook & line. I have caught them this way.
Also a pole spear is not synonymous with a Hawaiian sling. The Hawaiian sling shoots a free shaft through a simple non-triggered, handheld rubber powered (usually) short piece of wood

I was born in Florida & have lived here my whole life. I can tell you that invasion is what best characterizes the State. The Cuban invasion has reeked havoc. Now that most of the State has become a simultaneous suburb of Chicago & San Juan it's a complete cluster phuc. Climate change is the good news because it will take care of anything that can't swim in saltwater.
I bet a whole lot of Cubans would have written wreaked instead of reeked.
@Christopher Darden No , he don't own Florida but I bet if were the other way around you would feel differently about it. South florida used to be a lot different before the mariel boat lift of 1980. Don't get it wrong nobody is saying Cubans are bad people and we definitely love Cuban woman but the influx of millions of refugees into south florida ruined it for everyone else.

I remember as a kid swimming at Miami beach and seeing them in the seaweed clumps, they were not big just enough to hide in the clump, this was in the late 70s and early 80s. I thought they were just another tropical local fish. I was told as a kid to be careful from the barbs.

In the Florida Keys and Key West, the primary invasive species is chickens. There are a great nuisance which the local animal control agencies ignore and some people feed. The feeding breeds more and more of them. The crowing early in the morning, often before sunrise, is a great nuisance.
I love the Key West Chickens! But as a chicken owner, I can see how they are a nuisance to non chicken lovers. You all just don't have enough predators to kill them off. Here, between the coyotes, raccoons, opossums, and even dogs can take out hundreds of chickens in a few days.
This also could have been titled "Literally every animal you see in Florida that doesn't fly or swim exclusively."

Is it permitted to "remove" the peacocks??? They are turkeys with feathers......I think in fall, before the Thanksgiving, they can be "removed" very easily in a matter of a few days and people will enjoy and love them...just a different way! and at the same time it will help the environment! :-)

Trying to resolve the Lionfish problem that way is like pissing in the ocean to raise the tide? I would like to see someone develop a system using a hose and dredge pump. It would harvest them without physical damage for use as a food source, for man or animal??
I wonder if lion fish could be live trapped. If they could, any fish that ended up in the trap with them could be released unharmed, and the harvest of lion fish could be increased. I'd like to try one, but they are unavailable in my part of the country. So Floridians, get busy and catch more of them so we can eat them here too!
Also, can lion fish be used for sushi? Or do they carry parasites and are therefore inadvisable for using for sushi? If that's the case, I wonder what they would be like pickled? Most mackerel carry parasites and that's why when you get mackerel sushi it it always pickled mackerel. If they don't get parasites, or if they could be pickled, they might turn out to be something really in demand for the sushi market. If the more they are in demand as food, the fewer of them there will be. Win-win situation.

Introduction of king cobra from India can bring down number of pythons, iguanas, Tegus. They have a special taste for snakes and they eat there own kind too, so no need to worry about there number growing.

I waited through the whole video waiting for the discussion of the homo sapiens who have altered the whole landscape of South Florida with the destruction of the natural drainage system, the uncontrolled development of all land, and the pollution of our beautiful waters. All of this is connected to the unnatural drainage of the land for the purpose of development ($$$). The system was destroyed before any of it was understood. Whether it's needed for our winter food production or the sustaining of natural habitats, no land is sacred in South Florida. Canals are nothing more than open sewers destroying all of the estuaries along the coastline with their severe dumping of polluted fresh water. The waters of Lake Worth are severely polluted between the City of Lake Worth & Boynton Beach, because the West Palm Beach canal dumps its dirty water there.
Nature always finds a balance, contrary to the narrative delivered here. Species have been moving around the planet before man began writing its history. The only concern should be our own survival because we are destroying the planet that sustains us.

I grew up here too. He is right about the Peacocks used to be a few only in the Grove now they are even out in the Redlands abundantly! But thank God we have no Iguanas or Tegus just normal chameleons and lizards, good thing cause if they eat flowers then they would probably eat your fruit trees when flowering, people please stop releasing stuff in our Florida Landscape!!!! ( And they eat our bird eggs too)
You know in my educated opinion destroying the lionfish would be the right thing by giving it to something that eats it because the last thing an invasive species needs is another invasive species
Couple solutions... They are all edible. Florida likes hunting and fishing competitions. Put those together for a few years and populations will decline. Green iguanas are nearly extinct in parts of their native range because they are so tasty...
They hunt peacocks in India, or at least they used to (see writings of Jim Corbett). They just thought of them as big pheasants.

Rodney Ervin shown in this video brakes his arm patting himself on the back for catching tegus that are over running Florida and destroying native habitat, then he sends them to people he doesn't know who will certainly someday release them into the wild to destroy other habitats. He is immensely proud of what he does. What would you call what he does?

While I am a vegetarian, I am glad to hear they are tasty for others and can be used as food. I think brining the tradition of spear fishing to the area sounds like a good idea. Many people in south Florida come from communities where spear fishing is traditional. Also, people can eat iguanas too. They may be a good sustainable source of healthy meat.
Iguanas are edible and delicious. They mostly eat plants so they are pretty clean.
