I think that the reason they made sokka and katara to go into the secret tunnel is because the actors for aang and katara had a major age gap and would probably make the actor and actress a bit uncomfortable to do scene where they both have to show love and affection to each other

I've seen this idea. But I don't know. They could've not added the secret tunnel in the first season, ans left this storyline as in the original. In the next season, Aang would have obviously matured. Plus, in my opinion, their age difference is not that big, it's a movie, not real life, and they are actors.
And besides, there are no obligatory kisses in the first two seasons, except for small hints that Aang likes Katara. In the original, the creators added such little hints, and it was very important for the development of their relationship.

The actor playing Aang still looks like a young boy while the actress playing Katara is nearly an adult now.
