      Always act like a mercenary. Go for the highest bidder. Since you can get fired anytime only care about yourself. It's the job market they created, the mentality shift should start with the companies not you.

  • @jljacobs62

    I've been in HR for 35+ years. Every company goes through this at one time or another and many will follow a LIFO (last in, first out) standard when determining who would be impacted by a layoff. Your manager was right though, this could turn out to be a really good thing - you've got experience and references that you didn't have before and now you can use that to find another position hopefully easier/faster/better than your last one. So have a good cry, wipe your tears, and go out and live your life... you're going to be just fine!

    • @bernadettelumley
      @bernadettelumley 2 месяца назад +19

      I've been in corporate as long as you have. I agree that the company followed LIFO when determining impacts. To answer Keegan's other question, they knew about this months ago. I have been involved in many restructuring initiatives, and discussions around cost savings and resource impacts take months before they are finalized and communicated.

      I think people should always hunt for opportunities. Never wait for a layoff. Be faster, you can't get fired if you quit first and move to a better job. If you feel the company has issues, jump ship asap. I immediately jumped ship as soon as a few people got fired. You don't just sit around and wait your turn.

    The job market is so bad. It took me 7 months just to get a simple part time position. People graduating are competing with experienced workers recently laid off so the opportunities are very low. All we can do us keep goibg and pray for the best. This is inspiring me to start something to fall back on. My biggest fear is homelessness. You got this!

    • @rachelv9441
      @rachelv9441 2 месяца назад +15

      @@volleygirl1018 deffo something illegal. Like i understand not wanting to mess up the morale of the team when she got laid off (even it's very messed up she wasn't allowed to tell her team and one of the team member was texting her but she couldn't say anything) but the fact that she couldn't talk about it ANYWHERE has my bells ringing. I hope she got paid a decent chunk of money for not being allowed to talk for 2 weeks cos that's a long time esp for someone who's jobless. That's one paycheck gone. Like idk how even that would work. Doesn't seem like a good company to work for.

    • @turtleycoolnails3479
      @turtleycoolnails3479 2 месяца назад +12

      This is sometimes common in a corporate world. I worked for a public school and when people were laid off, they were escorted off the property and unable to say goodbye depending on the reason.

    • @rachelv9441
      @rachelv9441 2 месяца назад +15

      @@turtleycoolnails3479 it's common to silence people for 2 weeks in the corporate world????? She said in her YT video and tik tok that she wasn't allowed to say a word about her getting laid off to ANYONE. NOT A SINGLE PERSON. She said she wasn't legally allowed to talk about it until she had approval. For 2 weeks she had to live in silence that she lost her job, couldn't post about it online, couldn't tell anyone? How is that common? That's illegal. Only way it's legal is if the company paid her a huge settlement not to talk. If that's corporate America then it's fucked up in so many ways. How can people think it's ok.

    • @turtleycoolnails3479
      @turtleycoolnails3479 2 месяца назад

      @@rachelv9441 Unfortunately yes. It is not an illegal form of silence if the other party willingly signs it. She could have declined. Most likely a severance package was offered and that was part of the NDA as an incentive. It does not need to be a huge amount offered and can sometimes be negotiated.
      She also mentions how her company is global and headquartered in London so this is not just an American thing.
      Which also goes to what kind of NDA she signed. If it is a non-compete NDA then that would make more sense on the staying quiet since it can also affect companies that work with her company and causing them to pull contracts. But also so she does not take any company accounts or secrets with her to a competitor. Knowing she is in the marketing world, this is likely the kind she signed.
      Generally you are not supposed to talk about it because people are still likely to be laid off and the company is trying to do this quietly until they are ready for it to come out. This could be because what you were offered may not be what others were offered in their severance package and they do not want other employees to be tipped off. This also extends to the competition and trying to not get the word of any possible financial trouble or whatever other reason out there. It is all about the company’s confidentiality.

    I got laid off back in November, and I understand you fully. It hurts so bad, especially when you're not expecting it. My best advice: cry, get mad, do all the emotional release you have to do to not keep it in. Things will only get better, I promise. It's a blessing in disguise. It turned out to be the best thing to happen to me. Good luck ❤

    Sending you so much love, it's a horrible thing to go through and it's valid to feel all of these feelings. Take time to heal and be easy with yourself. And with the house, it honestly sounds like you've had a lucky escape, it sounded sketch that it was so cheap and cash only so I think something bad would have happened! You will come out the other side ❤

    I’m soooooooo sorry you lost your job. I actually lost my job last year April and it was the hardest things I had to go through. I ended up going back for my masters and currently have an internship for this upcoming summer. So it’s definitely not the end of the world. Everything happens for a reason

    I am so sorry about your job! It’s ok to feel alll the emotions you are feeling! I can’t tell you how many times I got laid off!
    I had this really important job for 3 -1/2 years when the company was experiencing a big lay off!
    I was devastated and I cried for 2 weeks!
    You just get up and forage through and hopefully you can find another job! Things do happen for a reason and maybe a bigger and better opportunity is awaiting you!
    Keep your chin up!

    We don't pity you, this is a very common experience unfortunately. I feel for you so much, I am 24 and work in a corporate environment and I am always scared of layoffs, especially being in the tech industry. Cry it out as much as you need and know that new, better doors are opening for you soon. My cousin was also in marketing (also 24) and struggled finding jobs in her area upon graduation and ended up moving to Texas for a job opportunity. Life takes you in so many directions but you are doing great! One step at a time

    Gurl you dodged a bullet on that condo. Things happen for a reason. You might not see this now but years from now you'll look back and think wow I was so lucky. I'm so sorry that they had those dehumanizing rules in place about how you had to leave your job. I have never heard of that before but I guess that's how the world works now. My job let my work bestie go and we were called into a teams meeting and told that we weren't to have contact with her. I'll tell you how that's working for them. They don't get to dictate to me who I spend my time with out of work. You've got this and you will only go up from here!

    I am so sorry this happened. As an old lady of 57, I am going to say this much, they absolutely knew way before the day they laid you off. The HR lady has all kinds of documents to prepare and the like. As well an IT request to restrict your access isn't created the day of it takes time especially in a large company. Your direct boss may not have known until last week but they all knew well before that morning. 'Restructuring ' means layoffs no matter what business you are in.
    All that said take all you learned there and you will find something that works well for you I am certain of that. As for the Condo, the reason it had to be cash is because it doesn't meet 'quality' standards for a mortgage. Meaning either the building itself or that unit has some underlying issues.
    You shouldn't be embarrassed you did nothing wrong and I think it's their loss. Unfortunately employers do not see people as human. You will 💯 flourish going forward I believe that. You created your own business with the 'to do lists', that is an enormous accomplishment and shows you have personal drive and ambition, not many people have that. Hold your head up high you are an amazing young woman and great things are ahead for you.

    I'm so sorry. I know its so hard to hear the news. My first job I was laid off, and I took it so personally and wondered what I could have done to prevent it. 10 years later, it was one of the best things to have ever happened to me. Allow yourself to grieve now, and you will eventually grow from it. Wishing you the best, and healing in this moment.

    Awww Keegan I am so sorry!! Same exact thing happened to me after working someplace for 2 years. I was the most expendable my my workplace couldn’t keep up with their reckless spending and keep me. I luckily found another job quickly and it was the best thing to happen to me! Company ended up loosing more money with my severance pay rather than waiting for me to quit on my own if they had waited a month longer. Your experience is a great resume builder and finding your next job will be quicker because of that!! Sending you all the good vibes and luck ahead of you!! 💛💛

    So sorry Keegan, it’s cliche, but I would apply “The comeback is always greater than the setback” to this situation. Everything you’re feeling is a natural response to this change and the impact it has on your life. Remember this is not permanent unless you choose for it to be. You determine your future, and where you go from here.
    Maybe you’ve said this before, but are you not open to relocation? I know your family and most of your friends are in AZ, but are there other reasons you want to remain where you are? That’s something to think about.
    Wishing you nothing but the best. I hope you’ll find opportunities to explore very soon, that give you the same sense of fulfillment. ❤

    I am so sorry you had to go through this. I lost my dad last month (I actually got hired at the company the same day he died but 2 years ago) and today I was hit with a layoff. It wasn’t just me but the whole team. It’s crazy how they don’t even care that I lost my dad and now putting this hardship on me but I see it as a blessing that now I can fully grieve safely and comfortably instead of pushing myself to work and then sleeping the rest of the day. It was no way to live. I am grateful to Allah (God) for my faith in Him.

    It hurts so bad right now and you have every right to be sad and hurt and scared. These were both blessings and something great is coming. Take a moment to grieve but know there is something exciting on the horizon.
