That title card is great, DonWoka does amazing work. Fun fact about the voice acting in here, multiple voice actors from Primal Fury/Extreme did return for this game, but for some reason none of them are voicing the characters they previously voiced. The making of this game is a whole weird mess.
The problem with the beast bar system is that its not fun to hit someone and they just turn into their beast form. Before it was a bar that you had to manage, if you saved up your bar then you can stay in that form a lot longer but also still get knocked out of it if the bar is used up. In Bloody Roar 4 you can see Matt just hitting the opponent and they just auto turn into their Beast form. Also while Reji is neat, Nagi the Spurious lady is pretty lame, weird how she looks like Kasumi from DOA though.
I totally agree, it has that cross tekken issue where it just really drags out matches. Also, if you lose all your beast bar, but then manage to get a bunch of hits without getting hit yourself, you just got a whole health bar back and your opponent loses ALL their progress. Its so frustrating. I don't know why they changed it to this system when the meter before worked perfectly fine. Beast form until guage empty and knockdown. That works fine! And yes, Nagi drives me freaking nuts with the creative bankruptcy. You have ALL the animals in the world, mythological ones too. And you use a whole roster spot for whatever that is? Just, just why?
It's just hard because, unlike most other fighting games, every costume in BR require at least two models. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just a big hurdle to cross.

Thanks for covering this game. Discovering and playing Beastorizor in my local arcade was a formative experience for me as a kid. It helped shaped me into who I am today. Yugo’s “you’re lucky it wasn’t a full moon tonight” was an ongoing line between my friends.
I noticed that about the health bars and immediately thought "wow, that's a dumb mechanic." Why would you change it so you can't even get knocked out in beast form? Why such a confusing fundamental change to have the health bar tied to your beast form meter? I'd never played 4, really only have extensive time with Primal Fury, so seeing that baffled me right away. Also agreed about the weird change to the stages having that invisible barrier instead of just... the stage itself serving as a barrier. Takes away some of the personality of the arena when everything's reduced to the same box shape instead of the unique shapes and designs they had before.
15:10 yeah, it does suck those are gone for sure. What we got with 4 was basically Custom Groove system of capcom vs snk 2 or Samurai Shodown 6's style customization. You can completely change the character's dodge/block style, jump height or if they can do a beast form jump in human form, the human or beast mode only (hyper mode only in japan), Third beast drives and completely new combos to unlock, increasing move/juggle/launch properties, adding electric guard or heavy guard to attacks or specials, and being able to special move swap unlocked moves (so yes, Yugo or Shen long can perform Alice or Uriko's moves even). This is all in career mode and usable in other modes via equipping the abilities (and there are complete save data for both USA and JP versions)
Shenlong's "get someone else next time" might be the only line in the game that sounds like it was said by a person. I suspect it was candid and the VA just really needed a drink
What a sad end to the series. Bloody roar had massive roster potential with its gimmick, but sadly its locked away in the konami vaults and I will never get my Muai tai Kangaroo D:

Uriko in Bloody Roar 1 looked like Uranus and was the final boss also went from child to adult to chimera but it was Uriko just never heard you mention that tidbit.
I found out how to trigger the Hyper Beast form in this game. You have to sacrifice all of your remaining health into your Beast Gauge, and then you'll enter Hyper Beast Mode. Yep, it's as dumb as it sounds-
I know there is a big fan base, but the more i see Bloody Roar being looked at makes me wish for a true revival of the franchise. Like give me updated engine and graphic, but keep the gameplay the same. Maybe make a all out that just have all the characters from the past entries and allow the fullest roster. It would been nice if there was Last Bloody roar game in the style of a MK trilogy game, all fighters are there, just the heck for it. almost all stages as well, And a choice of game play modes styles BB2, BB3, Extreme or BB4 and a New Remix mode, kinda like Capcom's combat modes select

From what I understand, BR: Primal Fury (with all its bugs and glitches) actually was what killed the franchise. BR 4 just cemented the games' downfall - it was fine, but didn't really refine much in terms of game mechanics and the "create a fighter" mode was baffling, arcane and had a UI that looked like a mind-numbingly boring spreadsheet.
That is fair, the bouncing around to different console platforms certainly didn't help them when their fanbase most likely had Playstations at the time. I never got a chance to play Primal Fury but I did own BR3 and Extreme at the time.
It sucks that the franchise was permanently dead because of this shitty ass game that is way inferior to the previous entries. Tekken 4, even if its the black sheep of the series in terms of competitive play, looks and plays better than this. The only way to play Bloody Roar today is the fandub of the second game and emulations, as the series will probably never ever seen a re-release at any kind. I'm honestly suprised no one has done a spiritual successor of it, much like how Bug Fables is a spiritual successor to the pre-Sticker Star Paper Mario games, but alas. And before you ask, the trademark Konami did 2 years ago does not count, like with the fake Crash rumors that spreaded around in early 2010s.
Carreer mode is really not that bad,the battles are mindlessly easy and the game gives more than enough points to unlock 4 characters very easily and quick,like one or two hours,which is no different from having to finish the game with a couple of characters in single player, the last one iirc you need to put some work into it but its ryoho and he sucks and he is already in the roster anyways so no big deal,also you unlock customizable moves and gets to play with equipment for experimentation. People have this bad habit of regurgitating opinions without trying the game at all and i feel bloody roar 4 suffers this curse because it was really not THAT bad,it was different from the previous sure but its not nearly as bad as people make it out to be,which is a shame because that collective hate is probably what is keeping them from reviving this ip. I'm not asking you to unconditionally like the game, just to be a little more fair with it!
I didnt like this game when it was released, and I still don't. Its a step back in every way from Primal Fury/Extreme in terms of roster, endings, gameplay, modes, and features. Id be alot nicer to it if it had new designs/graphics/backgrounds, but its so regurgitated it comes off as incredibly slapdash. I appreciate you like it, but I never will. And thats been my opinion since day 1.
I think the biggest drawback is that the game was the same without new mechanics since 2 very few new moves, all with the same command like qcb + kick always did the armor crush qcf + punch did the same special attack and so on...the game got outdated, and thats talking about the core game
This is objectively false 2,3 and PF/EX added a huge amount of new mechanics and moves, PF/EX has over 200 moves per character, the mizuumi wiki entry for the game lists all the mechanics in the game and its a huge list of stuff.

If you can get your hands in a career mode save with everything unlocked it's fun to mess around with the different nodes.

I had bloody roar 3 on the PS2 and absolutely loved that game, one of my favourite fighters next to Tekken and street fighter.

The arena seems smaller. Remembering Bloody Roar 3 on Ps2(the best IMO) we could easily do a charge run attack. Like the two health bar. Neath idea.

4 was the first game in the series I played and while I still get enjoyment from playing it I can see that it's a very flawed game.
