Every year, we celebrate Independence day with pride and fervour, but we want to bury the memories of partition and the cost at which Independence was served. Partition of India and Pakistan is a dark chapter in the history of the subcontinent - something we would like to forget.
The DeshBhakt, we track the years before partition, what caused the rift between Congress and the Muslim League - how the British were successful in dividing us - and why we are STILL not learning the lessons of Partition.

My grandfather used to remind us about Partition on every Independence Day, to make us realize at what cost we got freedom.
My family migrated from Pakistan and lost land and relatives equally. Thank you, Akash Banerjee for talking about it as it's very important to value our freedom and not get lost in hatred.
P.S. There is a Partition Memorial in Amritsar. It was opened last year.

It was needed for the Muslims of India because the more popultaed hindus dominated the Muslims and tortured them. Just look at the 1930s election where Hindu dominant party won and restricted Muslims.
Independence doesn't means freedom. Freedom means extent to which we enjoy our "Fundamental rights". Freedom means ease access to basic necessities: food, water, clothing, shelter, employment, electricity, communication, sanitation, education, healthcare. When we get all these only then we will attain the real meaning of "Freedom".
It also means religious freedom, equality and secularism

The purpose of religion, in my limited understanding, was to help humans live in peace and harmony. When the interpretation of a religion tends towards destroying this very peace then then we need to recalibrate. Interpretation of a religion is like an android app...needs to be updated regularly.

My father who had migrated to kolkata after partition was instrumental in setting up a school for girls of the community that had been displaced during partition. They named the school - Udbastu Sammilto Balika Vidyalaya, loosely translated to Immigrants united Girls’ School. 60 years after independence, the “UDBASTU” part of the school name was removed, as students and teachers felt humiliated by the name.
This much for remembering our partition, our pain and the resolve of a generation to win over their pitiful situation.
