63 grams salted butter ( 2.2 oz )
45 grams brewed coffee ( 45 ml / 3 tablespoons )
63 grams dark chocolate ( 2.2 oz )
100 grams granulated sugar ( 125 ml / 1/2 cup )
1 large egg
75 grams all purpose flour (125 ml / 1/2 cup ) ( plain flour )
30 grams milk ( 30 ml / 2 tablespoons )
14 grams cocoa powder ( 30 ml / 2 tablespoons ) (Dutch Process )
10 grams vegetable oil ( 10 ml / 2 teaspoons )
1 gram baking powder ( 1/4 teaspoon ) ( 1 ml approx )
1 gram baking soda ( 1/4 teaspoon ) ( 1 ml approx )

This cake looks totally delicious! Do you think it would work without the egg though? I would love to try out a vegan version of this (of course, switching out some of the other ingredients for vegan options aswell). Hi Lori, sorry for the late reply, by now you have made the cake. Yes, I would have used 2 medium, but even just using 1 would have been fine. 1 or 2 is fine. Hello BakeLikeAPro! Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe! I finally had time to try this and it turned out magnificent. But I have one question. In your video your cake is raised in the middle, whereas mine was lowered and overall looked more like cone shape ( but just a little) so the side was not straight. Do you have any suggestions? It's my go to and favorite recipe and eversince I have found this recipe I have not tried any other chocolate cake recipe. I'm only facing one issue now that is that my cake even after completely baked and cooled to room temperature my cake breaks apart. Like even if I manage to cut the layer and then if I try to put the layer back the layer breaks and then with broken layers I have only cake pops as an option to make so I make them, but can u please tell me what could be the issue. Eagerly waiting for your reply ✨☺️

Hello Adeela, you can increase your baking temp to 350 degrees F, and also the time will be greatly reduced, you are talking about 30 mins or so. Always check your cake with a wooden skewer to test for "doneness"

Hello ! 🙂 yes that is correct. All purpose flour = plain flour. It is exactly the same flour. In North America ( Canada, and the United States) it s called all purpose flour... in Europe it's called plain flour... and yes, it's the same flour. 🙂
Hi. Thank you for such a great receipt!!! It's the most tasteful mud cake i've ever try. I have a question, the cake rise quite enough, but when i took it out it set in the middle. Am i doing something wrong??? I baked it 2 hours at 150 Celsius.
Hi Natalia, wow you baked this cake for 2 hours ? ... that's *too long* ! I should say it's much too long. I only baked mine for just over 1 hour. When you say "it set in the middle" I assume this means it was very solid. This is because you over-baked the cake. Thanks for watching ! Hi Candice, you'll want to bake them for about 25 minutes. I would leave the recipe the same. Keep a wooden skewer at the ready to check them in the last 5 minutes or so. Hi Ifra, 63 grams, yes at 2 oz, that's about a 1/4 cup of chocolate. When I measure out chocolate chips, It's about 200 grams for 1 cup. The exact amount doesn't matter. This looks delicious! If I use milk chocolate instead of dark, should I reduce the amount of sugar? I don't like my desserts too sweet 😌
Hello Tejasvini, if you feel you should decrease the amount of sugar, please do so. Do not reduce it too much. If you do, no more than 50% reduction of sugar. I hope this helps. It really is a matter of personal taste, and it is only you who can decide how sweet you want it. You can always add a lower sugar amount, and then before baking, just taste the a little bit of the cake batter, and see how it tastes to you. Then decide from there if you wish to keep the sugar the same amount, or add a bit more. Thank you so much for watching ! 😁

I wish to bake 3 recipes of this mud cake and put them in 3 (6"x3" tin). What will be the temperature and the length of time it should be baked at if all 3 tins are in the oven? Thanks.
Hi Lina, yes the time will stay the same. I base this on you using a traditional oven found in North America ( standard found in all homes ) if you are using a small toaster oven, then this will take longer. Pre-heat your oven. Make sure the oven is at the right temp before putting the cakes into the oven, and make sure you are using a "bake" mode which means both upper and lower heating elements are working. I hope this helps. Basically - if your oven is large enough ( enough volume ) there will be plenty of heat to heat 3 cakes. If you used a tiny oven, it could take a bit longer to bake. Hi Krystal ! 😁 You can use any type of chocolate you like, it doesn't matter what type it is, any type will work great in the recipe. If you don't have vanilla, don't worry, you don't need it. You'll still make a great cake.

hi there, you use salted butter for the mini mud cake but use unsalted in the regular size mud cake. does it matter which i use?
Hi cathy, I wanted to simplify the recipe a bit, so went with salted butter. In the professional kitchen, you will always find unsalted butter, so the chef has more control over the salt being added into a recipe. Salt percentage can different slightly from butter manufacturers... so this is one of the reasons they do this, plus you can accurately use the amount of salt you wish in a specific recipe. When you ever see a recipe calling for *salted* butter, you will seldom see salt as an ingredient to be added.... because there is enough salt in the butter. So if you use unsalted butter - always add salt..... if you see salted butter used - do not add salt until you try the recipe once.... if you feel it needed a bit more salt, you can always add a pinch the next time you make your recipe for that cake. Hi Maria, self-raising flour contains baking powder, so you should be 100% OK like that. IF you want to add a pinch more of baking powder, there really is no problem. Hi, Thanks for the recipe, I have made the large version several times and it tastes great. Just a few questions:
1. The original size cake always seems to sink heavily in the middle and i have to trim quite a bit to get it level, any tips for stopping this?
2. For a wedding I need to make a bigger sized cake (for a 10'' pan instead of the 8'' that the original cake makes). Is there any problem with me combining the recipes for this mini-cake and the full-size cake, in order to increase the amount of batter for a larger cake?

Hello, thank you for watching ! I baked this is regular / standard mode. In North America, ALL ovens without exception bake with both upper and lower heating elements ON. This is the only way to get uniform / great baking results. I realize that in other parts of the world, you have ovens that can use only the lower heating element... this is NOT good. You will get bad results. Always use both upper and lower elements. This creates an environment for the cakes or cookies or pizza, etc.. that is very uniform in terms of heat dissipation. This means your cakes, cookies etc... will bake evenly from all sides at the same time. I hope this helps. --- Oh and also pre-heat your oven ! Thank you for watching my video 👍

Hi Priya ! Yes, you can use any of those. It really has no effect on the recipe. If you enjoy coffee, use whatever you usually drink and use that. IF you do not like coffee, then just add the same amount of liquid, that can be water or milk.
