Thanks very much for providing helpful information! I watched your videos about the Proofread Anywhere course and after reviewing some of the other courses on the market, I can see the value of the marketing training and support the PA course seems to offer, whereas the other courses don't provide that kind of assistance. I'm still on the fence about whether or not to buy it because I'm concerned the market may be oversaturated with proofreaders looking for work. There are 20,000+ proofreaders who have posted their profiles on Fiverr! Yikes! Since you created your videos 2 years ago and so much has happened to disrupt life for so many people since then, with so many people now working from home, do you think that proofreading work is harder to come by now than it was a few years ago? Thank you!

    • @SilasHaigh

      Glad you found it helpful!
Great questions and valid concerns. Let me start off with some general advice:
Even though most of my proofreading vids were created 1-2 years ago, I still proofread to this day.
When starting anything new, two of the main roadblocks are "Does this still work?" and "Will this work for me?"
For the first one, the best way to overcome it is to reach out to someone else doing what you want to do, as you have done by commenting on this video. Before I started, what helped me overcome this hurdle (and gave me lots of encouragement) was reading the interviews with PA grads on their blog and hearing their personal stories. Here's mine to start you off :) proofreadanywhere.com/get-paid-to-proofread/
For the second obstacle -- once you've figured out it's possible and it's a good fit for you -- the best way to overcome it is to get your first payment as soon as possible. That might seem like a long way off, but focus all your efforts on diving in headfirst and actually getting that first payment, rather than having everything perfect and getting all your ducks in a row. There is nothing more powerful than receiving your first payment and knowing that this actually works, and not only that, it works for you! Then, everything else (marketing/technical aspects/admin etc) will be much easier and won't stop you from actually getting started.
PA does not encourage proofreaders to find work on Fiverr. That's unfortunately where a lot of the low-rate proofreaders go, but their skills often match their rates. PA teaches you how to become an excellent proofreader, charge what you're worth, and find quality clients who pay you what you're worth (through a variety of different marketing methods).
With more people working online, there are even more things to proofread than there were a few years ago. In the various PA FB groups, I haven't seen a change in the amount of work out there vs the amount of proofreaders. The people that make it work are the ones that focus on "active" marketing vs "passive" marketing, and there's a whole section of the course dedicated to it. I can say with absolute certainty that -- for quality proofreaders -- the market is far from saturated. I would recommend just niching down and serving a particular type of client. I have some videos on my channel that show how I got my first few clients, and those methods would still work today.
I hope this helps to alleviate some of your concerns, and if proofreading is a good fit for you, I hope to see you inside the PA community soon!

@@SilasHaigh Wow! Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my questions and concerns and providing valuable advice based on your experience! In addition, thank you for the link to your testimonial as that was very helpful too. Over the years I've gone down similar dead-end roads in pursuit of extra income and have become quite skeptical about various courses on the market. I retired in December 2020 after 30 years working for the largest entertainment company on the planet (you know, the one that began with a mouse!) with stints as a project coordinator and executive assistant, including 4 years as a legal assistant where my job was to proofread contracts. I landed that assignment on the recommendation of an EVP who told the Executive Counsel who reported to him, "you want her because she has eagle eyes"! I say that not to toot my own horn but to explain why, even though I'm 20 credits shy of earning my bachelor's degree, I'm fairly confident I can do this kind of work. I wasn't planning to work after I retired, but with soaring inflation here in the US, I decided that in order for me to protect myself financially, as well as travel as I want to, working part time from home might be a good idea! You have alleviated my concerns, so thank you again!

    Hi Silas,
I've recently started looking for proofreading courses for many of the same reasons as you described, and I had a couple of questions.
I'll definitely look into Proofread Anywhere, but are there any UK-based courses you'd recommend as well? Similarly, have you managed to get much work from UK/Australia-based writers since you did a US-based course?
    Thanks for your time,
    Aidan

    • @SilasHaigh
      @SilasHaigh  2 года назад +5

      Hey, Aidan!
Great to hear. If you haven't already, check out my proofreading playlist on my RUclips channel -- got a bunch of videos diving deep into proofreading on there.
I did a LOT of research when I was looking into proofreading, and I couldn't find any good UK ones (this was a few years back). Also, none of the other courses I found showed you how to actually get clients -- arguable the most important thing if you're starting your own business. The others just taught you how to proofread, which is obviously a basic requirement, but left out the business side.
I've worked exclusively with US clients. I'm sure I could get UK/Australian, but I've had more than enough work with the US. There are a lot more people in the US, so a lot more potential clients. Plus, one of my unique selling points with the time difference is I can proofread while they sleep so they have a finished document when they wake up. Quick turnarounds pay well!

Hi, Silas. I would like to know because I'm thinking about buying her course general proofreading course now because it's at 70% off now. The General Proofreading the Ignite one is the one on sale. Do you have any idea what the Ignite Plus course covers that the normal Ignite doesn't. Also, what course did you bought from her? Would love to connect with you via social media if that's all right.

Hey! Excellent. It's an amazing course!! The Ignite Plus has these extras:
      - Hand-graded exam
      - Verifiable secure digital and printable certificate of completion
      - Listing in the Self-Publishing School (SPS) Preferred Outsourcer Rolodex & Proofread Anywhere Graduate Directory and access to proofreader work opportunities
      - Exclusive marketing mastermind group access just for Proofread Anywhere General Proofreaders with verified skills
I've gone through both her General Proofreading and Transcript Proofreading courses (loved them both). I just took the Ignite version, not Ignite Plus, and that was great for me, but it's up you. I know plenty of people that have taken the Ignite Plus and found it helpful and valuable.

I haven't tried this course, so I can't speak from experience. It looks good after briefly checking out the website. When I was researching which course to do a few years ago, what persuaded me to go for Proofread Anywhere was the whole section on marketing, which no other course seemed to focus on. The marketing skills I learned have proven to be invaluable and have helped me get clients not only in my proofreading business but in my other business as well.

I learned to run the other way whenever I hear someone say "financial freedom", "investment", "quit your 9-to-5 job", "slave/slavery", "you hate your job/boss", "work from the beach or anywhere", "it's not a get-rich-quick scheme", make big, wild claims like "Freelancing/Business = Freedom" As a general advice research what you're getting yourself into before you buy into it. Whether job, freelancing, business. Buy RUclips Premiums to save your money on RUclips. Thank me later.

    • @SilasHaigh
      @SilasHaigh  Год назад

Great advice -- you should always research what you're getting into. Heavily. With anything new, I would encourage you to think logically rather than emotionally.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of online marketers and fake gurus out there who do things the wrong way and give others a bad name.
And you're right, a lot of those phrases are red flags. But I wouldn't put them all in the same category. For example, it's true that with proofreading you can work from anywhere. I should know, I've done it for the past few years. And I wouldn't say it started me on the path towards "freedom", but freelancing definitely gave me a lot more time and location flexibility.
Your approach is a good rule-of-thumb, but it could mean you pass up on legitimate opportunities. That may be worth the risk for you and many others. It's not for me, and I'm glad I never passed up on this opportunity. I can assure you, Caitlin Pyle and Proofread Anywhere are 100% legitimate. I've been proofreading online for a few years now, and I still do it to this day. It was how I first started making money online, and it was a great stepping stone for all sorts of other opportunities. I had been scammed in the past, so I was very skeptical when I first heard about Proofread Anywhere. I did a LOT of research before deciding to invest in the course. I share a lot more in an interview here: proofreadanywhere.com/get-paid-to-proofread/
From my experience, hearing personal stories helped a lot to trust that this was legitimate, so that's one of the reasons why I share mine on this channel. There are also plenty of other real-world interviews with other proofreaders on that blog. Again, they are obviously not going to be unbiased, but it was a great help to me when I was first looking into this.
I'm not sure if PA is something you're considering, but either way, I wanted to give an in-depth answer to this to alleviate some of your concerns or those of someone else who might be reading this, in the hope that you don't pass on this if it is right for you.
The PA community is one of the most supportive and trustworthy communities I've ever encountered, so I would also encourage you/others to attempt to reach out to them and hear what they have to say.
Please feel free to check me out and/or reach out to me on Facebook, my FB group, LinkedIn, etc., and I'll happily provide income screenshots, client testimonials, or whatever you need to see that this is legitimate.

@@SilasHaigh Fair enough. I'd like to say I'm a fan of reading books.
The beautiful thing about books is they're cheap.
      A $1000 worth of courses = a bookshelve of ~50 books + shipping.
For me, I would choose to learn to withstand reading books and pass up on the mouth-watering, expensive courses.
So many people hate reading books that's why courses are so powerful.

    Two questions:
    1. What is the cost for her legal transcript proofreading course?
    2. Something happened over a year ago where she supposedly posted some negative comments (on FB?) about something.
I have not been able to find out more about this. Do you have any knowledge or insights regarding this?

    • @SilasHaigh
      @SilasHaigh  4 года назад +3

      Thanks for the questions.
      1. I honestly can't remember the exact cost. It's roughly $1,000, but it's split into sections and it's not just a one-off payment. Here's what I found directly from a blog from the start of this year:
"When I enrolled in 2016, you could purchase everything at once. The course has had significant updates and thus increased its price to $1,174; however, there are chances to save an extra $230 along the way, which brings your investment to $944.
      "
      2. I don't know about that particular incident. I have a lot of respect for her because she doesn't put up with any nonsense, but she has the unfortunate tendency to mix up her business and personal life online
. In saying that, I have taken both her proofreading courses and she was professional, knowledgeable, and likable throughout.

Of course. I've got plenty of videos on my proofreading playlist on my RUclips channel to help you work out if it is right for you.
Here are some other free proofreading resources that might be helpful:
      1. If you need more experience, you can volunteer to proofread old books and get some practice here: www.pgdp.net/
      2. I believe the Chicago Manual of Style Online still offers a free subscription for a certain amount of time. Check that out and read through it. It will help you to learn and reinforce rules you may already know.
      3. Here are some free tools that might help: ruclips.net/video/rgIlT7juY3Y/видео.html
Other than that, you could always test out places like Upwork and Fiverr. I wouldn't recommend them long-term for getting clients though as it's usually hard to get paid well for proofreading on those platforms.
