Steven Moore - All Outcomes from the Election Pose Risks, but what are the Main Existential Threats?

  • Whatever mistakes he has made in the war Vladimir Putin has retained the Escalation Initiative, always proving he can push the war to a new level of brutality, with the Western allies always playing catch-up, any in many ways placing restrictions and delays on Ukraine in terms of how it fights back. What are the implications of this dynamic for the war and a potential Ukrainian victory?

Steven Moore is a political strategist, who spent seven years as a chief of staff and senior leadership aide in the United States Congress, developing relationships with senior policymakers across the United States and around the world. He worked on Capitol Hill in the House of Representatives mostly as chief of staff for former Rep. Pete Roskam (R-Ill.), the former chief deputy GOP whip. In that role, Moore was one of the most influential staff members on the Republican side of the aisle.

i think that the point is that the 'America First' people --who i dislike utterly -- may be persuadable. This was news to me. I was in Washington in late April (right before the vote) with the Ukraine Action Summit; we were lobbying Congress at the same time Steven Moore was there, a very intense time. His take on Mike Johnson had a ring of truth. His access to Republican circles makes his perspective interesting, I've been tempted to despair over the prospect of 2nd Trump term and the implication for Ukraine. But in wartime, despair is an enemy. As an activist, it is valuable to me to have hope about a possible way through if things go badly in Novemeber.

Steven Moore is a realist and has first hand experience and of course Jonathan must be the greatest host Britain has - he knows the topics to be discussed and is not out to make guest feel uncomfortable. America can walk away from the Ukranian conflict if , for instance, Trump is elected but until Kingdom come, American will be in a war or conflict as it's enemies will be taunting them relentlessly and the Military Industrial Complex will be churning out weapons and the taxpayer will HAVE to pay. America can decide not to be the "Policeman of the West" and become an isolationist country but then their present enemies will take over the rest of the world and "poof"!there goes the USA. Heaven forbid the stories about American states wanting to go independent never happens .

@@gregoryadair3223 Ukraine is an extremely important issue, but in my opinion, it is not the worst event that might occur if he gets reelected… I hav an 18 year old son who i fear might inherit a dictatorship and/or nuclear war… I absolutely could NOT trust trumpybear any less than i do currently! The worst part for me is that I live in Georgia so I’m surrounded by MAGAts and other delusions that are widely held around here… but even harder for me is that my own parents are firmly on the bandwagon and completely deaf to any possibilities besides what the trumpybear party line tells them to believe! My own family can’t think for themselves… it’s extremely hard to see and makes me unfathomably sad… especially knowing how much they would EVENTUALLY hate living under a dictatorship. I find myself strongly disagreeing with this speaker a lot.
The US vote for Ukraine aid SHOULD have been 100% in favor, because any rational assessment of the situation would lead a rational and ethical actor to make that determination. A representative who is not acting rationally is, frankly, not doing their job. The fact that many Americans are irrational isn't any kind of excuse for their representatives acting in irrational ways. It highlights how the problem lies on both the governmental and the population level, and it really makes me despair as to how we are going to move forward from this incredible lack of reason and ethics that seems so baked into our species.

When he said 20% of russia's economy has been put on war footing, and asked,
"What is Putin planning to do with all those tanks?"
my mind went to the big changes dogmatizing and militarizing the school curriculum,
the Wagner soldiers sent to child care facilities (Kitas) to show off their weapons,
the whole new schoolbooks highlighting to first through 11th graders why they need to get their patriotic behinds to the front lines,
their huge youth army... likely featuring some of the 780,000 (according to Russian reporting) Ukainian children liberated from thrir families...
and realized they are in it for the long haul.

A vast segment of the Republican Party does not support Ukraine because they are Russian Operatives, like Donald John Trump, and they seek Autocratic Leadership on OUR side of the globe. Russia has done much more than just "blanket" The West with propaganda: Many people in Western Lands are (knowingly or not) part of the Russian System, either via their Autocratic Ideology, or via Financial Systems (banking), or especially the Orthodox Church (Evangelicals fit this mold with utter precision, worshipping and longing for a _"Big Daddy"_ to come and _"Save"_ them, or an "End of Times" event). Republicans no longer are American Conservatives; Republicans are Russian Orthodoxy Assets!
Don't think of these as merely people that have "bought into" Russian Propaganda; it's more accurate to realize that entire swaths of American Culture, such as the GOP and the NRA and America First, are actual parts of Russian Entities, rather than merely misshapen victims of Russian Propaganda. Especially if they have ties to Russian Banks, and if they worship an invisible leader, beware! _Much of the Republican Party, GOP, and MAGA is all as Russian as Putin and the Kremlin itself,_ and this includes FOX News and especially the NRA.
The United States GOP and MAGA along with a vast swath of the Republican Party is now closely allied and aligned with the Russian Federation. Therefore, the real war for Democracy and Freedom is likely not being fought today in the cities of Ukraine or even in the trenches, but right here in the American ballot box in November 2024. The GOP Republican Party in the U.S.A. is simply an extension of the Kremlin and Autocracy; we need to wage a battle every bit as vital as the one in Ukraine. It's not that Donald Trump as President again would not support Ukraine; it's much worse than this. Trump's supporters wish to destroy the United States! _Trump and Moscow and Putin and the Kremlin are all of the same entity._ - j q t -

Steve has great perspectives and skin in the game doing great work to help Ukraine, but his partisan background shows.
His focus on where accusations of people operating as russian propagandists are unfounded or reaching too far, rather than true by intent or not, is disappointing. He also weaves in some ahistorical talking points around moscow Mike Johnson and the blocked aid.
Not sure if he sees what the modern GOP is, and what that means in our (possibly pre-WWIII) context.
I think the blocked aid and political uncertainty in the West means everyone at all levels needs to prepare for worst outcomes, and work to prevent those. Organizations, agreements and networks that are resilient to what we face will leave us in a better place even if the worst doesn't come to pass.

Pretending McCarthy is some pro Ukraine hero and Mike Johnson is historically wise is utter garbage. It Johnson needs a religious connection rather than a liberal democracy connection to care about the conflict then he can’t be trusted to do anything sane about foreign policy without massive massaging and framing.

Very nice interview. That was a nice touch having your moderator send him a message to clear the background because of the distraction. Very professional in my opinion. The show was very informative.
For me it's all about the children. Never forget all of the Russians who abused children and their families in Ukraine. From the mass graves (in Izium) to the stolen children. Now if Ukrainian parents don't become Russian citizens and go to flight against their brothers and cousins Russia will take their newborn children at birth. How many children are now sex slaves? They can not be allowed to win.
Speaking of Izium. What did those 414 people see? The Russians thought it was better to murder them and bury them all in a mass grave instead of letting them testify. Whatever they saw must have been truly horrific. At minimum I'm guessing rape and torture. With an average of 150 war crime per day who knows.
If Russia want's to sign a treaty they must first prove they will stand by one. If Russia or Putin wants to negotiate, start with your original written agreement. Putin on January 28, 2003 signed the boarder agreement. He's signed several agreements he doesn't honor. Pull back all of their troops back behind their original boarder and then you can start negotiations. If they don't show they will honor the original agreement how can you expect them to honor any further agreements.
It's our war to lose. Russia can NOT win. Unless we choose to not support Ukraine of course. It is on us in the global West to pick the world we want to live in. Choose wisely. Thanks.
Glory to Ukraine. God Bless Ukraine and her people. 🇺🇦🇺🇸

In relation to the Farrage problem in the UK, has anyone done analysis about what that kind of Russian connection could be in terms of the whole Brexit event? My gut instinct, just based on the known economic damage (so weakening the UK) of Brexit, points me in the direction there may indeed be a Russian 'hand' behind that event, it also 'weakened' Europe overall as well.

Slow walking is an understatement, for example look at the number of delivered tanks (from Ukraine Support Tracker):
    1. Poland 324
    2. Netherlands 104
    3. Czech Republic 90
    4. US 76
    5. Denmark 69
    6. Germany 55
    7. Spain 29
    8. Slovenia 28
    9. UK 14
    10. Sweden 10
I some tanks are probably better than others, but quantity has a quality of its own! The effort of many (most) large Western countries is simply not good enough.

When did criminals ever surround themselves with "the right people"?
Ukraine was heading for disaster, after 6 months of virtually no supplies.
Europe was ramping up, but we had no stockpiles.
      "It woke Europe up"?
      Sorry?
We were awake, but had no stockpiles.
And the USA promised us stockpiles for 75 years.
Now that we needed them they stalled it for 6 months?
That kind of cynical thinking is sick.

It would not be a good thing for Ukraine if Trump wins election for the mere fact that Ukrainians don’t like him. Neither do western nations. It might be good for me, an American, but not possibly for Ukraine. So it would have to be purely strategic relationship, not so much like a partnership. Like your guest said, the pragmatist vs. the ideologue.

"We are in a defacto World War, because China, Iran, North Korea and Russia are all working together and only our adversaries are behaving as if this is the case" to paraphrase.
Exactly this. There is a pattern in play that suggests long-term planning for this scenario and plenty of evidence floating around western democracies these last 12 to 15 years, that we were always going to be here, that is in relation to events in our own countries that make us weaker (collectively as the west) in dealing with the reality we are facing. And yes that reality includes the highest risk of a nuclear war breaking out we have ever had.
So the question is how to stop a worst case scenario?
