From The Dam at Otter Creek to Horse is fantastic! It’s one of my all-time favourites... so many albums from the 90s are like that. Dirt/AIC, Ten/Pearl Jam, Superunknown/Soundgarden... Among others.♥️
Hi, this song isn't about someone dying in childbirth. I believe it's more about the circle of life. The lyrics speak of a new baby being born while an old woman down the hall dies. It says the confusion that was hers belongs now to the baby down the hall. Great song from the 90's by Live. I remember the radio stations censoring out the part about the placenta falling to the floor, lol.
The song is about reincarnation. The singer had a fascination with Hinduism at the time. On their next album "Secret Samadhi" the song "Lakini's Juice" is about his transition from Christianity to Hinduism. I highly recommend the song
Ed's voice is so full of emotion, he is a fully charged singer, Live was a ball busting group, always gave 110. He is still a very talented singer/songwriter and still has heart. I loved these guys from the first time I saw this video back in the day and it never fails to touch me deeply.
the Mother didn't die...an older woman down the hall passed.....song is about emotions all people have at the joy of new life and the grief of death.....I looked it up.....I just liked the song
Throwing Copper was such an amazing album. I remember when they used this song on an episode of ER where a mother died. It was so sad. Live is such an underrated band.
@@KingdomHeartsGirl87 I'm sorry to hear that. I hold those memories close. Since it's been 20plus yrs since he passed. I'd love to see a reaction video though I feel it would bring back good memories and a small smile to my face.
This song was all over the radio in about 1994 and Live is just a really great band. It just evokes happy memories of my mid twenties, and my children were babies.
I flatlined giving birth to my second child. She was born as a result of a trauma. I do not regret my decision for one second. I love and will always love my little girl. Song makes me cry. But in a good way.
Greatest song of the 90's. Throwing Copper is my second favorite album of all time. Live is one of the few bands who have never put out a bad album. Their stuff is top notch.
Wow this is such a great song by great folks...its called lightning crashes by the group Live...this song itself gives me chills....I can feel it.....man this hits you in the feels....thank you Ty...be blessed
This song is beautiful. It has a very sad memory connected to it for me. On the morning that the Oklahoma City Bombing happened I was listening to the radio to hear the updates. After they informed the listeners of the loss of babies and children dying - the DJ dedicated this song to those children. It was surreal. Pretty close to 9/11. I still love this song.
Live was an excellent band. I've watched this video hundreds of times and listen to the song even more. I've never lost a baby at birth but I lost my little girl just 2 weeks after birth, Then her mother, the love of my life just 5 months after.
The band is named live, the song is called lightning crashes. Live is a very under appreciated rock band from the 90’s, I love this album but I also love the album secret samadhi. He has such a strong voice. I think this song is more about how as one person dies another is born, maybe even reincarnated into a new person. “Lightning crashes an old mother dies Her intentions fall to the floor The angel closes her eyes The confusion that was hers Belongs now to the baby down the hall”
My mom was a midwife and an L&d nurse before that, I was raised by these women and I volunteered at the hospital. We were told that if there was a rose on the door to not enter because it meant she had lost a baby. I remember having followers for a lady w a rose 🌹 on the door and I stopped. Life is so precious and gone too soon and making a life carrying a life delivering that life it’s all a miracle. After that day giving birth was somehow bigger. That’s what this song makes me think of and hugs for all the moms and all the families that lose moms!
This song came out the month my daughter was stillborn 23 yrs ago, after seeing the video the first time it took me years before I could even listen to this song but now it heals the ache in my heart a bit. Such is the power of music
That opening instrumental is very moving. I heard and saw it on MTV in the 9th grade, so I was a bit young to be moved but I still liked the song. You tend to like stuff like this even more when you're an adult. If you decide on "I Alone", it's considered a bad video by several people (but the song is great).
Ed Kowalczyk is one amazing singer and I love this band. His range is fantastic too. His lyrics are awesome. This such an emotional song. My third son always cries when he hears it. (He hates the part when Ed sings "An old mother dies) in fact, all of my sons get sad! Live's album "Throwing Copper" that this song is from is one of my top ten favourites. So is their album, "The Distance"
This was one of my favorite songs in my teens. It was all over the radio, along with a few of their other songs. I didn't own a CD player until my older brother bought me one for my birthday at the end of 1996 and then I only had 4 CDs, so I made mix tapes with their songs from the radio. (The CDs he gave me were Garbage, 311, and NIN pretty hate machine and the downward spiral lol) This song resonates with me because it's a story of pain and triumph... and has an intense chorus to belt out loudly. As i remember, there was a lot of angst and longing in the songs i liked as a teenager... it hit home as a confused, burgeoning kid. Also, they played this and stuff like blind melon with a live band at my church... it reminds me of a Christian band i really dug named Plumb. The challenge has been finding these songs on spotify and RUclips because the band's name always brings up live renditions of songs, but not usually the band... and i may remember the song, but not its name or specific lyrics after so long.
@@sweetpeaholly Ah you edited your comment,D'oh!😂 that is NOT how we play, darn cheaters! I gave ya a bump also cos it's a good suggestion i dont actually think i've ever heard any reactions to it.👌
I think this is regarding childbirth...I'm sure that it means different things to different people. This was popular in 1996 and I fell in love with it. I associate this song with the birth of my son...it was the last song I heard before I had him...I heard the song and an hour later he came in to this world. I will always love this song and every time I hear it I am reminded of the miracle my son is. Thank you for reacting to this song!!! I hope that you have a wonderful and blessed day my friend!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 🐧🐧
When my son was a teenager and learning to play music, would hear this song in the car and sing as loud as we could. Lol. We both said we’d hope he could write a song as deep and beautiful as this.
It was one of the best songs to ever hit the radio in the 90's. Live had 3 great albums to hit the 90's, and great songs with those albums. Like Selling the Drama, White Noise, I Alone, Lightning Crashes, Turn My Head, Turn to the Water, They Did it All for Love, All Over You. And those were just the songs they released.
Yes, this song got me through some incredibly rough times many years ago. I know people talk about having to start over, I felt like I had to claw my way to the starting point from a deep dark hole and for some reason this song was comforting. I hadn't seen the video though, that bald androgynous thing freaked me out and was it holding the baby by the feet?
I almost died giving birth to my daughter who is now 8 years old. My husband's been scared to death of me getting pregnant again. But every time I hear this song it brings me back to that time when I flatlined and then taking that deep breath of air again, hearing my husband screaming for me to wake up. The song is pretty hard for him to listen to. But we both thank God I am still here.
Definitely see this as being about the cycle of life and death. Hit home later in life when my dad passed away five days before my son was born. Sometimes... just see a bit of him in there, even though they never met.
According to lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk, who recalled to Spin magazine, “The music video, which depicts one woman dying while another gives birth, has caused some confusion among fans. Ed explains: "While the clip is shot in a home environment, I envisioned it taking place in a hospital, where all these simultaneous deaths and births are going on, one family mourning the loss of a woman while a screaming baby emerges from a young mother in another room. Nobody's dying in the act of childbirth, as some viewers think. What you're seeing is actually a happy ending based on a kind of transference of life."
Childbirth is the most dangerous medical event a woman faces. Sadly the US has one of the highest maternal morbidity (death rate) in the first world countries. It's not decreasing but actually increasing!
Probably partly due to the use of the drug pitocin. I almost bleed to death after I had my daughter. You wouldn't believe how much blood I lost, it was nuts. Hemmorage is common with pitocin. High blood pressure is another cause of maternal mortality, I wonder if that ties into the obesity rates in America.

I have always liked a lot of the 90's "Grunge" bands. My son was a teenager then and was a big fan of Pearl Jam and now his son just turned 13 and loves the same music and is a guitar player that loves Nirvana. And life carries on!
The song is not about someone dying during childbirth. It's about the cycle of life. An older mother dies while the new mother gives birth to a new life down the hall.

I really wanted to do an altered version of All Over You at my sisters wedding. Live is a profound band too bad they really never made it even though most people recognize their hits.
Nope, baby is born and the old dying mother's soul goes into the baby. It is a JOYFUL song about the continuity of life. NO ONE dies, not ever. We are immortal, thanks to our heavenly Father.
like your channel, watched numerous videos, I'm confused on this one- did you like the song or not? not really heard you say. I have several of their albums. LIVE fans, if you have not seen LIVE- Live at the Presideo , didn't spell that right, one of the best live performances ever.
The band is "LIVE" -- the song is "Lightning Crashes". To ME, their best songs are "OVERCOME" and "TURN MY HEAD". If you see this, please check out those two songs by "Live".
I think the message is even greater than a single death or birth. I see a celebration of the miracle of life where the spark goes out in one life and then comes to life in another; and the cycle continues. What I cant figure is the symbolism of all the books on the floor being blown and tattered, not so sure what that represented.
Like most music, interpretation is subjective. I took this to draw attention to the cycle of life (someone giving birth) to someone dying (down the hall). It seems to be a very smart and mystical track....but if you want to party, you're probably not going to put this on. Another track on the same album, 'I Alone', is very worth checking out and the reason I bought the CD way back when.
This song played when my youngest daughter was born because I did not go to her birth , instead it was an mma event with my son . She is dead now , my son came to the funaral from Iraq
That album is amazing from beginning to end.

Here are the lyrics for this song. It may be easier to understand that it's not about a woman dying in childbirth, but the circle/cycle of life and death; I really like the song for just that reason...the continuum of life...but the singing and music too.
Lightning crashes a new mother cries
Her placenta falls to the floor
The angel opens her eyes
The confusion sets in
Before the doctor can even close the door
Lightning crashes an old mother dies
Her intentions fall to the floor
The angel closes her eyes
The confusion that was hers
Belongs now to the baby down the hall
Oh now feel it, comin' back again
Like a rollin', thunder chasing the wind
Forces pullin' from
The center of the earth again
I can feel it.
Lightning crashes a new mother cries
This moment she's been waiting for
The angel opens her eyes
Pale blue colored iris
Presents the circle
And puts the glory out to hide, hide
Oh now feel it, comin' back again

Oh now feel it, comin' back again

Mother dies. Baby lived. Baby grew up. 2nd woman was the daughter and her baby lived. It was always a great song with a great group.
Would you please Listen to Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show Sylvias Mother
Had to write an essay on this song my freshman year of hs. The joys of the circle of life.....
I think it was more about the baby is replacing the old lady down the hall passing away as a sign of never ending life cycle?? IMO
Nope, baby is born and the old dying mother's soul goes into the baby. It is a JOYFUL song about the continuity of life. NO ONE dies, not ever. We are immortal, thanks to our heavenly Father.
I like this, never heard of them before.
like your channel, watched numerous videos, I'm confused on this one- did you like the song or not? not really heard you say. I have several of their albums. LIVE fans, if you have not seen LIVE- Live at the Presideo , didn't spell that right, one of the best live performances ever.
Live ❤ one of my most favorite bands of all time.
another great one by Live is called Dam at otter creek, you would like it
The song is about the cycle of birth and death
Live is one of my favorite bands from the 90's. I love this song. But I love Selling of Drama from them.
The video is directed by Jake Scott; son of Ridley Scott.
This band never got the recognition it deserved - they were/are fabulously talented. Throwing Copper the best album IMO from the 90s.
song "overcome" by them
Brittney Airgood Yes! Another great one. “Overcome” was played extensively by radio stations in America in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
One of the few songs that I just can’t listen to. Beautiful and heart wrenching.
This band has an incredible body of work
Dope song always give me the chills
The band is "LIVE" -- the song is "Lightning Crashes". To ME, their best songs are "OVERCOME" and "TURN MY HEAD". If you see this, please check out those two songs by "Live".
This song is about a sort of symbolic reincarnation as in life happens at the moment of death and the life transfers, in a way, it's synchronistic.
I have never heard this song. Beautiful 😢
This is one of my favorite albums.
Love this song, Live is one of the greatest 90's alternative band, try "Lakini Juice"
I think the message is even greater than a single death or birth. I see a celebration of the miracle of life where the spark goes out in one life and then comes to life in another; and the cycle continues. What I cant figure is the symbolism of all the books on the floor being blown and tattered, not so sure what that represented.
It's not about someone dying during childbirth.
@Becky Boo Don't think so. It talks about an old mother dying and a new mother giving birth. Doesn't mention organ donations
Powerful song, only song I know that has the word Placenta in it!
