This was written to honor a friend of the band who died as a result of a car crash.
She donated her organs so different people's lives were saved.
The song is about the circle of life.
The baby inherits the 'confusion' that belonged to the old mother who died in the next room.
They are an incredible band much more than one hit.
They are from York Pennsylvania which is one county over from where I live.

Ed Kowalczyk was one of the best voices in the 90's and the album Throwing Copper is all-time great.
Their set on MTV Unplugged is comparable quality to Nirvana's.
That's right, it seems to me that Ed is very underrated and it is a real shame since he is a great singer and excellent lyricist, he is still in force with his excellent voice intact, it was difficult to get noticed in his time with so many great voices all exploding at the same time , we really are lucky to live in this time and appreciate everyone without losing any
When this song was hitting its stride, my sister died after a 8 year battle with cancer, she was 18 and a singer. The last three courses have a female voice that comes in and it always brings tears to my eyes because it reminds me of my sister. I haven't heard this song in a long time and I'm crying like a baby. Phenomenal song it just really hurts to listen to.
To lose a sibling is devastating. I know how a song can suddenly amplify all that grief that resides within at the drop of a hat. Thank you for sharing, I think (and hope) doing so helps 😢❤

IMHO, The fact that your sister is still on your heart speaks volumes about the BOTH of you. Loving bonds are eternal. Just a personal, yet some might say "spiritual" perspective from someone who has been blessed with 67 years on this planet.
This is absolutely one of the most iconic rock songs of the 90s with a hauntingly wonderful video. Live has so much great music to delve into.

This album was HUGE in South Africa when I was a teen...that line "Like a rolling thunder chasing the wind" always used to ring in my head when the usual 4pm highveld thunderstorm rolled over Johannesburg in the summer months...I miss those days...
In the soundtrack of my life Live’s Throwing Copper is that album that the tour bus driver in NZ let a large group of teens put in the CD player and had an hour of relative peace & harmony on the journey to the other side of the island ...”I Alone” is a hypnotic energy driving melody... especially when everyone knows the lyrics and it becomes a ruckus sing a long ... like when it was performed in concert or on a bus half way around the globe😊

In the late 90's i saw them at Rock Werchter, it was blazing hot all day, when they got on stage it started slightly drizzling but the sun was still out, looked like steam rose from the crowd and rainbows appeared. It was an almost spiritual experience and Ed Kowalski sang his ❤ out. I was obviously not 100% sober, quite a bit of beer and weed was consumed, but this truly is how i remember it. Great festival that was 😂🤘❤️
This song ALWAYS gives me chills!! From start to finish. It perfectly captures the profound and spiritual nature of birth and death - the circle of life. Love the line "the confusion that was hers belongs now to the baby down the hall". Imagine the confusion that a newborn must feel at the moment of birth. And then, the confusion of a dying person, having no control over what is happening to them. What a powerful song!

They killed it on Unplugged. IMO they did it better than everyone else. Sad it got delayed and they never reaped the benefit of that show.

Great Song from an Absolutely Amazing Album Throwing Cooper. Lucky enough to have seen them in Concert after this Album was released. What an Amazing Live Show and the Lead Singer is a Frontman’s Frontman
I've had the pleasure of seeing them in concert twice. Once opening up for the counting Crows in the late '90s and several years ago at a music festival in New Orleans.
Not trying to make anyone jealous but I grew up about 20 minutes from them and can't count the number of times I've seen them even as Public Affection
This album was HUGE!! I remember in the early 90s (94 i think) when this was released - it was like every song was on the radio. Super popular huge album - crossed genres and generations - sounded somewhat rock, somewhat alternative, somewhat pop, somewhat indie. It was just really really good. It's one of those albums that just comes out at the right time for its sound, just as Def Leppards Hysteria, Boston's Boston and Van Halen's first album. Was just a perfect fit.
Years ago when this album came out. My parents had one of those huge satellite dishes in the yard. I was able to get this Canadian channel called Much Music. Canada’s equivalent to MTV. I saw the video for I Alone, 4 Non Blondes video What’s Up, and Oasis video for Supersonic. That’s when I think I realized new great bands were exploding everywhere.
Much was an institution. They used to play all music. Great memories
when you are working with an art of storytelling, the better experiences in my humble opinion, come from those works which not only build to the climax of the story, but add layers of complexity. This track does that so well. They carry me off into thoughts of birth and death and cycles.
Dammit all these years and I still start crying as soon as his voice comes in. Saw these guys live in DC on this tour and it was EPIC! Really a standout album of the decade. Love when Kate Pierson (B-52's) comes in at the end too. Such a timeless track. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I saw them live in Atlanta and it was honestly one of the greatest live sets I've seen. The entire crowd had lighters in the air and sang along. I'll remember it forever

When I first heard this song I was immediately feeling sadness and taken back to a moment that was difficult to describe as a child. This song takes me to the very first time and it’s unforgettable. Seeing them Live and hearing it is a crazy vibe. His voice and range is sick. I love music that will move you in every situation. I feel like I’m on a roller coaster ride with this song.
I was blessed to see Live several times at various stages of their career and the never disappointed. It was cool to watch their progression (maturity) from their early music to the later stuff. Definitely NOT a one hit wonder.

I believe they were one of the very few acts that got a standing O on SNL. That appearance from 95 is spectacular!

Far from a one hit wonder. They ruled the charts for a few years, but were never really comfortable with the commercial success. Unbelievable in concert. Throwing Copper is a top 10 album for me. Underrated singer.
I remember the first time I heard this song come on the radio. I was driving to work and ended up sitting in the parking lot with tears in my eyes as I listened to the end of it.

"Throwing Copper" is one of the quintessential albums of the 90's. Many hits. Fittingly they were an amazing band to see in concert. The LP before this "Mental Jewelry" was also very good with the single "Operation Spirit" starting their MTV run.
I lived 10 minutes from the OKC bombing in 1995. I was 20 yrs old. Local rock stations used this song underneath the somber news soundbites in the following weeks. That's what i always think of when i hear this. I can still feel that bomb underneath my feet from 5 miles away.

Polo this is not a one hit wonder like many have said below this entire album is great. I have seen them twice in concert and the first time was the tour for this album and they were excellent. I agree with any song off this album would be great.

There's not a bad track on this album. I wouldn't normally suggest the big hits, but I Alone was another single that got major airplay in its time.

They are a great band, very underrated. Among my faves are a cover of Johnny Cash’s Walk the Line, I Alone and Lakinis Juice. I was lucky enough to see them live before the world went into lockdown

Their 1st 2 albums Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper are classic 90's gems. Not a bad track on both albums.
One of the best albums of an era.
Live has a very nice catalog that merits a deeper dive. Mental Jewelry (1991), Throwing Copper (1994), and Secret Samadhi (1997) have some really nice tracks. Admittedly, I sort of lost touch with them after their 1997 release. This makes me want to dive into some of their newer stuff too. Great reaction, as always. 🙏

As stated, the album called throwing Cooper is one of those albums that every song was a hit. Great band. There's a song called white discussion.. while the lyrics were written about something else, they are sooooo relevant in this political climate today.. truly.. Great album. Great reaction. Thank you.

I’m so pleased and surprised to hear you checking out a song by Līve. My first ever long-term, serious girlfriend turned me on to these guys. She made me a mix tape when I was in year 11 and she was in year 12-all of it songs that made her think of me-and, in addition to many others, it contained 3 songs by this band. To this day they are still some of my favourite tunes from this period of my life. They are: “Pain Lies On the Riverside” from their first album (I, like you, Polo, was a complicated young guy who suffered from depression from a young age, which either made me experience things that most people wouldn’t at my young age…or maybe it was the other way around. It was probably a little bit of both.);she also included ’Operation Spirit’ from the same record, because I was locked in a constant search for meaning in life-and I am still, to this day. I feel as if I’ve made progress in the nearly 30 years since then, however. It turns out that if you spend your entire life searching for meaning, you’ll never find it. The third song was a bit more an obvious love song, but still very beautiful, and unlike anything I’d heard up till that point. It is from their third record, and it is entitled ’Turn My Head’. This eventually became ‘our’ song, as it made me think of her as well, the instant I heard it.
Anyway, knowing your taste, I think you would really enjoy ‘ Pain Lies On the Riverside’ and ‘Operation Spirit’. Both have really killer rhythms and grooves; the rhythm section of this band are absolute legends; the melodies are incredibly catchy and infectious, and the lyrics stick in your head, despite being very heavy philosophical poetry. When I say ‘philosophical poetry’, I want to specify, though, that it’s questioning, not preachy. He’s searching for answers for answers, not trying to supply them, because in over 40 years of life, I’ve learnt that the answers are different for nearly every individual, and if you try to latch onto another person’s answers to the questions, your life will be empty and will feel wrong, but you’ll not know why-because you will believe you’ve already found your answers…despite having plagiarised another person’s answer.

This has always been the one song I turn to when life gets out of control, to tether me back to earth and center me again. The official video quite beautifully lays out the meaning of the song. And this whole album is one of those less often talked about masterpieces. "Lakini's Juice" would be cool next though.
Ooh ooh, then you would LOVE their first album "Mental Jewelry". Very spiritual and soulful on a cosmic level. Lead single was "Pain lies on the riverside". Ace album from start to finish.
He'd also love how heavy on the bass grooves Mental Jewelry was. It's really their second album though

My mother died and a few weeks laterI was driving by the assisted living center where she lived and I was at the light in traffic and this song came on.
Ive never cried that hard ever before or been closer to her in my life! She was there with me so close so comforting ever time I hear this song It stops me in my tracks.

I would love to see you dig into their catalog. Their breakthrough album was their 2nd, Throwing Copper. But don’t let their first album slip by, Mental Jewelry. Notable tracks are Pain Lies On The Riverside and Operation Spirit. I’d argue that they were one of the more underrated/overlooked bands of the 90s. They have a lot of good stuff, looking forward to you checking out more. Love the channel by the way.
