Seriously why is Gamma's story so good? I vividly remember as a child snapping to attention as Gamma watched his pit dog brother being dismantled and rebuilt as the literal weapon he is, and the somber tone just letting you take it all in. . . It's like Sonic Heart of Darkness Edition out of fucking no where, it's amazing. You just walk into a Silent Hill room first level in one of the character's standalone stories in a sonic game. Completely removed from the rest of the game. Was the writer just depressed or ballsy that day is what I wonder.
The story of sonic adventure is in general pretty good. However for as much as i love the english voice cast i have to admit they have gotten a pretty badly done script. The english translation is full of weird errors and stuff like that and the cutscenes dont really help with how they look. If you actually read this i would recommend using the retranslated mod for Sonic Adventure and putting the voices on Japanesse (i am not a weeb i just find it weird to have the english voices with retranslated subtitles on). Same goes for Adventure 2 it has a fantastic story and while it is slightly less broken in translation it still can be a bit rough.
@@poffzy bc nasally pc dweebs that pump out hours of retrospectives appeal to mass audiences better than actual reviews. I can at least like geek critique bc he's super passionate about what he talks about but he uploads so rarely
You’re the first one i’ve heard on YT finally bring up Sega trying to sell fishing games by including Big. They ran so many magazine ads about fishing games back then.
Now that I think of it, I remember fishing games being pushed super hard on the Dreamcast, in ads, magazines, and in every game you bought seemed to have a fishing game pamphlet in it. As a kid it just confused me.
An hour and 25 minutes of scripted, well edited analysis. Dang man. Just finished this in one sitting and loved it. For once somebody doesn't crucify this game, and actually agknowledges its strengths.
Strengths AND flaws. Most reviews of SA1 seem to only talk about either the bad or the good, and even make it sound like it's the second coming of Christ, or like it's literally the worst game ever made, while this one strikes a nice balance, talking about what's good and what's bad.
I know you said this wasn't meant to be a definitive review of Sonic Adventure, but I don't know if there's any other review of the game that features an MS paint drawing of Sonic assassinating JFK to explain how the homing attack works.
Sonic Adventure's a broken mess but it's got more heart in its pinky than most companies catalogs can manage in their entire lifetimes. I can't bring myself to hate a game that's trying this hard in spite of its technical issues.
There's nothing like turning Station Square into your personal skate park, you can ramp off stuff, run on the sides of buildings, go boundary breaking, it's great.
@Grumpoo Da Zumbie One of my favorite things to do in that game is to try and wallrun and break out of bounds in Station Square, the physics engine actually allows some really fun tricks once you get the hang of it.
@Grumpoo Da Zumbie that's honestly why i perfer adventure over any other 3d game, the physics are the closest, 3d sonic got to the perfection of the classic physics
Funny enough that whole "keep your momentum with homing attacks if you hold the button down on impact" idea got implemented into a recent additive homing attack mod for Generations.
Damn, when I saw the runtime I didn't expect it to be this dense. An hour and a half of fully planned and scripted content is reaching matthewmatosis levels of discipline. It was a really entertaining and comfy video and surprisingly funny, though I may just be biased because I think I just have the same sense of humor. Notably, never found myself getting tired or skipping around. Honest to god just sat there for the whole fuckin hour I've gotta be honest, this might inspire me to start making videos again. I tried a couple of times but just found second-guessing and writer's block to be real killers. On the other hand though this seemed fun as shit to work on and was entertaining to watch from start to finish. Planning on streaming any more? There was that one time with katamari that was super chill, and then RUclips went down at the worst possible time for like an entire day. Was sad but kind of hilarious in just how badly timed it was. Anyway streams could be a chill way to just relax with people and play games while you talk about random topics that aren't big enough for their own videos.
The review was a lot of fun to make! Although it was very tiring and by the end I was definitely ready for it to be over. I wanted to be thorough with this game as I feel like I haven't seen my perspective on it shared too commonly and I wanted to try and articulate as best I could my opinions on it without the strange baggage that people carry around when talking about Sonic games. Absolutely try working on something you feel passion for, I'm the kind of person who always needs to be busy with something so working on these videos gives me something fun to do after finishing some work on my game or school. You just gotta make sure that what you're making is the kind of content you really want, since writing this review I already know what I want to do next and it will be slightly different than the way this one was structured and I have ideas for improvements already. I think you can try to appeal to an audience of some kind but I think if you do that you'll fall into the second guessing stuff a lot more since you can't be in their heads. Maybe it will take longer to get the recognition you want, but I think if you write something you love and put your heart into you'll eventually get an audience you'll be happy to have, and you'll be actually excited to make content for them and improve at what you do. Streaming is a lot of fun! I loved doing it last time since I had Post Elvis and Tropics with me to read off the chat and have fun with everybody while talking about interesting stuff, kind of sad you weren't able to be there since I do remember you from the Katamari stream. I'd love to do another one with both of them before I start having to get back on my school work in a week. Thanks!
@@RunningShine you have this odd balance in your delivery that I like. You sound like Norm MacDonald and Mr plinkett. It's a combo I didn't know would sound so good
If the script on YIIK I'm writing is anything to go off of, that is going to be absolutely massive. If it gets too long I'll have to end up making timestamps for all the different parts so I don't end up wasting anybody's time. It's going to a be quite a ride for sure since I'm going through the whole game.
@@RunningShine And yet it's a video I can't stop playing over and over again. It's really well made, and the perfect background noise to listen to while I do other stuff.
@@NintendanGX for some reason that YIIK review has a special place in my heart. I always go back and listen to that video like 4 times a month now. just everything from shine's personality and speech patterns kinda captivates me and it's like the perfect backround noise because somehow it's entertaining even if I'm not paying attention. It's really well designed to be easy on the ears or some shit. It gives me nostalgia somehow; just a very homey video.
This is actually an amazing analysis. I'm so tired of people just repeating the game's technical weaknesses while completely ignoring its strengths. This review was good because it acknowledges that the game isn't perfect but it also has some strong points. The structural analysis goes beyond "hurr hurr cutscenes look dumb" and I appreciate that.
>Full Sail has a 55% overall graduation rate and a 21.1% student loan default rate,[45] higher than the national student loan default rate of 11.3%.[46] It is also listed on the Century Foundation's website as a university which includes restrictive clauses in the enrollment contracts, which are intended to minimize the legal recourse available to students in the event of disputes.[47] bruh
It's really insane, and it frustrates me how youtube people were promoting Full Sail for awhile, and convinced a bunch of impressionable kids that it's the "best place" to get into game development. If you want to be a game developer then pick up animation or get a degree in programming (or CS if you want to get deeper into things happening more under the hood). If you pick up a skill like that and start making some small games in Unity or Godot or Game Maker for a portfolio, you can absolutely find companies that will want to hire you. I've talked with a couple game local development companies where I live and they consistently bring up that they don't care where you went to school, or your degree or anything like that, they just want good people who are passionate, have so experience with development, and willing to learn what they need to be productive in the company. The only thing a school like Full Sail might get you is some connections, but even then Digipen is a much better school for that purpose, and it's just not worth dealing with a sketchy institution like that.
@@RunningShine This is what makes you so good, dude. You've even given me recommendations and think things through before putting them in videos. It gives me more inspiration to be a game developer. Don't worry though, I'll be sure not to leave too many unfinished projects.
This channel appeared in my recommendations as of recent and i was kind of expecting it to be another over inflated video with molasses paced claims and a condescending tone to boot. Instead, i find a nicely concise analysis, or general thoughts, on a video game from one of my favorite franchises that feel really open for discussion. I'm really glad you went into some design aspects on how things could work in theory and tried to avoid as much vague terminology as possible when discussing about sonic adventure's design. It's also cool to see you explain who made what in the game as it gives developers more of a spotlight and shows their talents that could give people a found appreciation for the developer in question. Although i wished it was a bit more consistent cause sometimes you specify on what dev did this and on the other you bring up sonic team without pinpointing what part of sonic team did this portion (i.e programming, art, designers). In despite of that, i enjoyed this video through and through; i am currently studying the ideas of game design to build my own personal indie project that i had been holding onto for a very long time. But i want to start things small and learn the fundamentals before i start working on the project so seeing flow charts and visual examples enlightened me quite a bit. In hindsight and again, good video my guy.
Thank you! I'd love to talk about everybody who works in these games, I hate being general and just using the studio blankly, but it can be very hard to figure out who did what at times, especially when it comes to the programmers/engineers. It can be very easy to figure out who did what with something like music because they get credited for not just being musicians, but also what tracks they worked on. Whereas with programmers you don't really know what aspect of the game they were assigned to do, it could be character physics, the logic for menu systems, event flags, collision, and many other things. I know that if I talk about a game in the future that only has one sole programmer though I'll be making sure to refer to them specifically when talking about how a certain aspect might have been programmed. Also on the topic of game development. My first CS professor gave me a great piece of advice when he said to start solving your problems algorithmically first. That is, make a set of instructions that the computer will go through to solve the issue before writing a single line of code, and once your down articulating and understanding the problems, then start using your engine and language to implement that solution. Doing this has made it possible for me to solve fairly complex problems a lot easier. Also make sure to learn debugging so that when you run into an unexpected bug or error in your game the whole project won't just get screwed. You can get pretty far by just going through the code that you think might be causing the problem and printing variables to the console to see if they're acting right, that usually catches around 90% of any bug I'm having.
Loved the review, only thing i would have added was touching upon the ending to tails story. I know it would have ruined the bit but seeing tails go from being someone who can't even cross the street without sonic holding his hand to growing a pair and stopping Eggman who's completely done at this point, abandoning the chaos idea and deciding to just nuke the city instead was a really cool growth. And the way Eggman delivered his lines at that point was great too Watched all your other reviews after seeing this one and it's a great channel, i was left craving more after seeing there was only 5 reviews but seeing the amount of heart, effort and time put into each one it makes sense and I'd say I'm not the only one wishing for more, seeing your views jump from 6k to 190k in just a few videos is amazing, if there's more to come in the future then i definitely look forward to it
I've never seen anyone bring up the weird music change during the Perfect Chaos fight until now. I honestly thought I was the only one who was irked by that.
55:20 only part of the game is set on angel island, specifically the area with ice cap and red mountain, angel island falling is actually what causes the wall to blow up in the Mystic Ruins.
I believe your disk has scraids. It's when a disc gets so scratched/scuffed/gooped-up that the very fabric of the game's reality starts to warp, distort and teleport randomly around in time.
That tangent about youtube reviewers at the beginning really made me revaluate who i spent my time watching, I can just feel their delusions of grandeur, like they all think they're gonna be the ones to save the entertainment industry by being obnoxious assholes who outright refuse to learn the simplest things about the development behind games or movies or whichever, or spending more time bitching about inconsequential shit than enjoying life. It's almost funny really, they complain about games journalist yet take every page out of their books. Your channel's a real refresher.
Excellent review / overview. My only complaint is that you somehow missed the fact that Big the Cat is voiced Jon St John - or how us boomer-shooter fans know him, Duke Nukem.
You probably already know this shit by now but in the GameCube rerealease Cream The Rabbit will appear in Station Square once every story after completing certain stages. (Or in Amy's case immediately after starting her campaign.) It's even heavily implied she's the one who drops the ice key that Sonic, Tails and Big pick up for Ice Cap. I hope this arc is explored even further with Cream's own story mode if Sonic Adventure were to get a remake. (As long as she doesn't encounter any two tailed foxes sitting on benches, that is.)
48:27 I like how you threw in that state machine explanation in there ahaha, ya'll should throw in stuff like that in videos I think it's cool if people who might not know the behind the scenes stuff of programming get to learn too.
Just binged all of your videos and ended up having the best time I’ve ever had on youtube in a long ass time. Your balance of unfiltered jokes and reviewing all with a personal charm is so goddamn refreshing to see
I'm currently on a binge of your reviews and I'm having a lot of fun. I love how you consistently give ideas to improve a game (the YIIK review is the best example of this so far) and your passion for critiquing is so clear. You give credit where credit is due and your videos are fair, visibly show what's right and wrong. I didn't think I would ever watch a review over 10 minutes, but your videos are worth it. Subbed; I hope you make it big some day. You deserve it for all the effort and love you put into your content.
I think I must have watched this video half a dozen times across several years and I just now realized the drawing at 17:23 was the JFK assassination. I laughed so hard that I started crying.
"Chaos 4 is completely unchanged" Um ackchyually he has slightly less health when you fight him as Tails. I can't believe you've led me astray like this. How can I trust anything you say now :(
fun fact: hardware issues and sonic adventure *are* actually related, some levels like windy valley had to be simplified for final version of the game due to the dreamcasts used for testing just not being able to run them correctly, either due to lag or other hardware problems.
According to a Retro Gamer interview, the actual reason is that they couldn't "clean up" the huge original Windy Valley in time, so Takashi Iizuka remade it from scratch.
36:13 This is honestly the reason why I started programming too. All the weird janky programming "magic" really captured my attention as a kid. It was fun to just completely go into places that I'm not supposed to be. And I think a lot of people would agree with this sentiment as well. It's just as interesting as seeing a graphically heavy game being optimized like crazy.
my sonic oc is a wolf with no special abilities named dick the wolf. he’s the only male animal character who wears pants. i’m not even joking, i drew him and everything.
Gamma probably isn't the bird, even if the bird powering him has some subconscious connection to him. Not to get all ERM ACHSHUALLY just saying it because it does more for his character if he recognizes that his existence is parasitic and that he's finally allowed to die in peace, fittingly alone after departing from the main cast and completing his mission of liberating his brothers. Also, I love this channel. I find myself relistening to your stuff pretty regularly. What keeps me coming back is how clearly passionate you are about the things you appreciate, measured with fair criticisms.
49:38 According to an unused Tikal voice clip, at one point it was possible to turn into Super Sonic in action stages by pressing B while jumping with at least 50 rings.
I really hope you review Sonic Adventure 2 some time. They really improved and streamlined everything from this game. It's also my favorite Sonic game of all time.
He didn't mention it when talking about some of the Dreamcast's best games, so undoubtedly he likes SA2 less than SA1, which seems to be a very common trend with people who give a positive review to the first game. I haven't met many others who enjoy both Adventure games for their own reasons.
@@alfo2804 I mean, there are fans that enjoys both Adventure 1 and 2, but those who *loves* both are very rare to find I can't blame them, both games have some fundamental differences in story and gameplay
@@ayrtonjoga I know there are - I'm one of them. I don't really like SA1 as much as SA2, but I'd definitely put it in a list of games that I love. Just not as high as SA2. But that's because of personal preference - I don't think SA2 is _better_ than SA1, I just think it appeals to me more. They're really two different games built around the same engine and character movesets. Honestly, I think I'd love them both equally if only SA1 had the same ranking and mission system as SA2.
Yeah! I actually like the Tails story, SA1’s stages are so fun that going through them a second time isn’t tiring and they mix things up in subtle ways. His story is good too and they actually try developing his character, but I wanted to focus the review a bit more on the gameplay elements, and there’s nothing in Tails’ playthrough that isn’t shared with Sonic’s except for the sandboarding and the egg walker. This was the first time doing something more long form and I was very concerned about being repetitive and treading over the same points and making the video too long, so it made sense to skip over him. But I also get how somebody might think it’s a bit jarring since I cover literally every other character. Honestly, I probably could have just put in what I wrote in the paragraph above and it would have cleared everything up in a concise way. Thanks for the comment!
@@RunningShine No problem. Honestly I didn't mind because the way you kept deliberately ignoring Tails was hilarious. Can't wait to see more reviews tho!
i played shadow the hedgehog when it came out on gamecube and i loved it. i still love that game. the versus mode was kinda crappy but it was still fun
really enjoyed this! one thing that bothers me is that this video is called a review with is misleading cause all reviews are fucking boring and this is not. kappa
@@yellowpowr8455 ah just saw. Interesting. I've seen jet grind radio and jet set be almost interchangeable in the last few years. Even seeing Americans refer to it as jet grind radio to avoid confusion with jet set radio future, so that could be it
14:36 Here's the fun part, they didn't. The Japanese version of the script is the same in terms of dialogue in all campaigns (except for the obvious parts where Eggman speaks to Tails), they just translated the same text differently for every campaign for some reason
Actually. That was something they added in the international versions. They actually accommodated for the new scripts by adding new scenes to the cutscenes.
one thing I love about this video is the friendliness of it, it feels less like some detached review and more like an art piece. Sometimes when you get some music from a small artist they'll include a little note thanking you for listening and buying their shit. The state machine bit and the extra music at the end gives this feeling a lot. it's like we're getting a little extra stuff to the video.
Unfortunately, it seems to be the opposite situation. The low level guys are having a hard time finding employment unless they can break into embedded systems or find a gig doing work on Arm processors. The big money and demand at the moment seems to be in high level web frameworks like Node or ASP. A lot of those jobs require basically no low level knowledge, and I guess you don’t technically need that understanding to do the job, but it’s led to a lot of the modern web being full of unoptimized code which is a shame. I’m haven’t looked into the games industry too much since there’s a lot of better industries for doing a day job as a dev, but from what I’ve seen, they seem to care a lot about your portfolio and knowledge of modern engines like Unity and Unreal. Things vary from company to company though, and especially if you want to be a graphics engineer you’re going to need to know how to work with OpenGL in C, and probably Vulkan too if you’re with a cutting-edge company, so there’s still some options out there. Also I agree with your previous comment, there’s a lot of great games on the Saturn like Bulk Slash or Radiant Silvergun that were lost in obscurity thanks to never being released outside of Japan. I'm surprised at how far Saturn emulation has progressed considering how fucked up the architecture is in that console, hopefully it keeps going so more games can play perfectly and people can discover the fantastic library it has.
@@RunningShine Just looking at coding/programming always intimidated the hell out of me. I was jealous of people who could make sense of it all. As for the Saturn, I only just last year finally played scenario's 2 and 3 of Shining Force 3. It was a literal dream come true, as ever since I was a kid I lamented that I could never finish the damn game! Even tried learning Japanese in no small part because of it. I remembered always hearing back in the day how Saturn emulators were borked and I'm glad things have come so far. I just need to get Dragonforce 2 up and running now. :P
Nice to see you're finally back. I was actually really looking forward to a Sonic 2 vid, but Adventure obviously make for a more interesting sequel. Your humour and delivery is always on point and I appreciate how you can mix in some genuinely good points and ideas about the games you review. It gives the video a more lighthearted tone, which makes it both memorable and I think easier to take in, despite the length. A lot of RUclips video game essayists tend to be either too dry or too ''RUclipsr funny'' if you know what I mean. You've got a good balance.
2:33 this is the most relatable rant I've seen. It has gotten worse since this post, though some are more thoughtful a lot of them are... Burnt out of the oven as it were. Overcooked with opinions that add nothing to the critique as if they were integral to damn the games they're talking about.
I actually watched one of that guy's videos a week or two ago on one of the new Star Wars movies out of curiosity. and actually managed to work my way all the way through all 3 hours of his intro. I think it's unfair that he get’s written off just because his stuff is long, but the issue is that he goes on tirades on things that aren't important to the review, he seems like a guy that writes in a very free form way and then does his best to organize it later. His bit on objectivity vs subjectivity should have been its own video as it had nothing to do with Star Wars (at least as far as I know, I never really cared about those movies) and even then it felt like he went on about it for an hour, when it's pretty simple concept to understand. I also don't think it's necessary to take a bunch of time out of something to lay out your beef with other guys on RUclips and Twitter, it seems petty and self absorbed to me (although granted, the guys he talked about do seem like weirdos). I can totally get if he saw a bad video and wants to make a full response talking about all the points he disagrees with, there’s definitely value in something like that, but there seems to be this weird personal drama that seeps through and it can make things confusing for somebody like me who isn’t absorbed in that world. When he actually started talking about the movie he spends lots on time about inconsistencies in plot and characters while summarizing, these are important things for sure, and I’m obviously in a bit of unknown waters when talking about movies, but I imagine that these new Star Wars films are weak because of bad character motivations, and a lack of anything interesting about them due to them being written by a Disney committee so they could be as boring and mass appeal as possible. The inconsistencies are there and should be pointed out, but I feel like there’s bigger problems with the core of those movies than just the bunch of small things they got wrong, and those inconsistencies are most likely inevitable due to that fact that it was a giant studio movie from Disney, and because of that a bunch of different writers had their hands on the script which always makes things a total mess. I can understand he’s probably a guy who gets taken out of stories really easily when there’s continuity problems or when characters do something that wouldn’t make much sense for their internal logic just so the film can progress to where it wants to get. Because of that he should probably move away from even watching these kind of big budget studio films and focus more on movies that have a sole screenwriter and director with a clear vision, as those will generally be a lot more technically consistent, as well as emotionally resonant since the main players in making the film put their hearts into making something great. He’s a talented guy for sure, the editing in the video was consistently good, and he’s a lot cleaner with his narration than I am. I don’t mean to shit on the guy. I don’t mean to shit on Anderson either, by the way. All those guys seem to be doing a hustle with RUclips since ad revenue is distributed based on the time the viewer watches instead of views, so everybody is making these really long form videos now where they kind of ramble on and stretch out their points until they have a sizable video. But the common thing I notice is that they make these videos long by basically showing a bunch of examples in your face. If I wanted to show you an example of how a mechanic might not work well in a game, I’d want to give one or two examples that articulate it well and then move on to the next thing I want to talk about, or elaborate on it further by showing how that mechanic might negatively effect the levels or the movement of the player. Instead though they tend to give like 10 examples, and go through them one at a time over and over and over until it just gets exhausting, I feel like it’s almost disrespectful to the viewer because you’re assuming they’re stupid and need tons of examples to understand something. I remember before RUclips allowed anybody to show ads except partnered channels I was very excited, because I felt that this would be a much better future for entertainment. There wouldn’t be a need for sensationalism and people could actually make content that resonated with them personally. But now it’s just like TV, everybody is wrestling with the ad revenue and however the hell the suggestions algorithm works and making sensationalists and even downright divisive content just so they can get a burst of attention and make a quick buck, you can really see that in the weird thumbnails people make and the clickbait titles. I’ve always maintained that I should make videos for fun instead of chasing that stuff and it’s why I don’t like putting ads on my videos or have a Patreon, I don’t say that because I think I’m somehow more virtuous to those guys, but because I’d be doing the exact same stuff that they do, probably making different kinds of content, trying to be more abrasive so that I get more attention and money, and I’d go crazy doing that. God damn why the fuck did I write all this shit? Sorry for sending you a jr. college essay in response to such a simple question, I guess I just really had a lot to say, feel free to respond if you want to keep discussing it, it’s always interesting to me.
Thank you for taking your time to respond. I would like to respond to you in extensive manner as you did but English isn't my first language and i don't want you to endure many paragraphs that have a lot of gramatical mistakes so i will keep it short As a long time Mauler fan, i agree with you in some points. I do think he goes on a bit to long in certain aspects but i don't think this is always a bad thing. I like that he goes in deep about every single detail about the movie so we can see absolutely everything that the movie offers, be it superfluous or critical to the story. He sometimes does go a little to long on minor details but i see it as a minor flaw of his essays. About the Objectivity vs Subjectivity part of the recent video, i agree he should have separated that part from the main video (he did upload that part in his second channel but thats besides the point) because it involved a lot of irrelevant "drama" that had little to do with the main topic of the video (i still enjoyed tho). I see Mauler as a content creator that takes time to express every single one of his viewpoints and critiques he has for the piece of media he is reviewing. I don't think the length of the videos are for maximaxing ad revenue, but because he has a lot of points to make, minor and major. I do understand that his type of content isn't for everyone but for me, a guy who enjoys long and detail critiques with strong points in favor or against a piece of media, is perfect the way it is. Again, thanks for responding me in such a extensive way and sorry for making you endure my english. With only five videos, you have become one of my favorite RUclipsrs on this site. Your comedy and editing is superb. Your content its excellent so keep it up and good luck on your next project, i will be sure i don't miss it! Greetings from Venezuela!
@@yehudiramirezortega726 Your English is just fine man, you're great! You being a fan of his means you definitely know him a lot better than somebody like me who’s only seen one video. I made a small mistake with ad revenue stuff, I was meaning to talk about that as a general influence on just about everybody on RUclips with the kind of content they make, not any particular person, but I wrote it in a clumsy way. Mauler 100% puts a lot of thought into his script and even mentioned that he does multiple drafts, which isn’t something somebody would do if they just wanted to get content out there quickly for some money.
Thanks for the response! Hope you're doing well in Venezuela, I know everything is all rocky there at the moment and hopefully it calms down soon.
Running Shine Having watched MauLer’s TLJ and TFA videos, he is the kind of guy that wants as many of his bases covered as possible. He really enjoys content like the original Star Wars and these critiques are an avenue for him to analyze film and see its merits or lack-thereof. As far as pointing out seemingly minor inconsistencies, he went scene by scene in TLJ and I have no doubts he will do the same with TFA. He leaves it up to the viewer on how big or small a strength or flaw of a film is, but he will let you know where he stands regardless. And I’m sure his hour long intro will be important for the rest of his critique. To the average joe it will come across as just some weird and petty drama between content creators, but since I’ve been along for the ride with him, I see it as MauLer laying the foundation of how he will be looking at The Force Awakens and addressing any potential critiques of his work that others may have (and have had). His channel grew by 100,000 within the span of 6-7 months after his TLJ critique and of course that will attract negative attention from other content creators. I appreciate MauLer is willing to tackle claims against him head on as a viewer.
Excellently made video! A nice balance of lightheartedness and substance. I thoroughly enjoy both yours and Joseph Anderson's reviews for the well-crafted rundowns. While his content is much more formal and step-by-step, yours is much more free-form and personal. Keep up the excellent, work! You're showing up in my recommended so it seems like you've got some good favour in RUclips's books.
I like that you apply constructive criticism in your reviews and remain positive without being either self congratulatory performatively angry. It works really well.
Yeah most reviewers come of as snarky fart sniffers that treat their video game opinions as the only enlightened one that matters. While this dude comes off as chill and down to earth.
There were a few little things that bugged me in this review, but all in all I dig the amount of work you put into it, and I enjoyed the overall analysis. These kind of videos shouldn’t go unnoticed.
I don't give even the slightest hint of a shit about Sonic, let alone Sonic Adventure, yet I found myself watching the whole video. You're clearly doing something right. Also, jokes about blacks are endlessly amusing. Keep it up.
The voice actor drama is American theatrics in its purest form. It also has a lot to do with them not wanting to move to the location of another studio just for voicing a blue rodent. They don't take these roles as seriously as their Japanese counterparts, who have to have years worth of training just to land a gig.

You’re the first one i’ve heard on YT finally bring up Sega trying to sell fishing games by including Big. They ran so many magazine ads about fishing games back then.
Not surprising the Dreamcast had water Effects superior to any competition on the marked at the time.

I love how COMING is emphasized with DSP Blowing his savings on stream
Sonic Adventure's a broken mess but it's got more heart in its pinky than most companies catalogs can manage in their entire lifetimes. I can't bring myself to hate a game that's trying this hard in spite of its technical issues.
it's why I love a lot of pre-boost, post-classic era Sonic, in spite of a lot of weak entries. even when he sucked, he did it with style
Broken mess? Just because you run into 12 glitches doesn’t mean it’s broken
@Grumpoo Da Zumbie that's honestly why i perfer adventure over any other 3d game, the physics are the closest, 3d sonic got to the perfection of the classic physics
what a great start to 2019.
It was all downhill from there.

Hey j thanks for recommending this channel and all the content and merch you put out too :)
Funny enough that whole "keep your momentum with homing attacks if you hold the button down on impact" idea got implemented into a recent additive homing attack mod for Generations.
RaikohZX there are also a few mod characters for a fangame called srb2 that have their homing attack work like this, it's pretty cool
it's also how neo sonic, an addon to srb2, works
Damn, when I saw the runtime I didn't expect it to be this dense. An hour and a half of fully planned and scripted content is reaching matthewmatosis levels of discipline. It was a really entertaining and comfy video and surprisingly funny, though I may just be biased because I think I just have the same sense of humor. Notably, never found myself getting tired or skipping around. Honest to god just sat there for the whole fuckin hour
I've gotta be honest, this might inspire me to start making videos again.
Thanks!

This is actually an amazing analysis. I'm so tired of people just repeating the game's technical weaknesses while completely ignoring its strengths.

bruh

Is that ripped straight from wiki lol
And the way Eggman delivered his lines at that point was great too
Watched all your other reviews after seeing this one and it's a great channel, i was left craving more after seeing there was only 5 reviews but seeing the amount of heart, effort and time put into each one it makes sense and I'd say I'm not the only one wishing for more, seeing your views jump from 6k to 190k in just a few videos is amazing, if there's more to come in the future then i definitely look forward to it

You probably already know this shit by now but in the GameCube rerealease Cream The Rabbit will appear in Station Square once every story after completing certain stages. (Or in Amy's case immediately after starting her campaign.)
It's even heavily implied she's the one who drops the ice key that Sonic, Tails and Big pick up for Ice Cap. fun fact: hardware issues and sonic adventure *are* actually related, some levels like windy valley had to be simplified for final version of the game due to the dreamcasts used for testing just not being able to run them correctly, either due to lag or other hardware problems.

Honestly, I think I'd love them both equally if only SA1 had the same ranking and mission system as SA2.
Kind of curious, but did you skip Tails because his levels are exactly like Sonic's

2:33 this is the most relatable rant I've seen. It has gotten worse since this post, though some are more thoughtful a lot of them are... Burnt out of the oven as it were. Overcooked with opinions that add nothing to the critique as if they were integral to damn the games they're talking about.
Nice jab at Joseph Anderson at the beginning but, what do you think about Mauler's content? Just curious
I would like to respond to you in extensive manner as you did but English isn't my first language and i don't want you to endure many paragraphs that have a lot of gramatical mistakes so i will keep it short
As a long time Mauler fan, i agree with you in some points.
Thank you for your wishes, it really means a lot! Good luck with your next project!
11:06 It's HYDRO. CITY. You did that shit on purpose.
Lmao he brought this comment up in his mmx4 stream
@@Mrsircuddlesworth lol what did he say
Yeah, it's pronounced just like everyone's favourite Zone from Sonic 2, METRO. POLIS. Zone.
"Velo City"
@@alfo2804 Metropolis is a word, Hydrocity is not, so yes, it's "Hydro City". Everything else is deep state propaganda.
Running Shine: This is a subjective video.
Actual Video: Objective review.
Subbed for the snobby analytical reviews and the gentoo joke you're a legend dude
13:48 yeah, I'm going with based on this one
You can skip the cutscenes in the re-release thankfully.
kino is back on the menu boys
Came for the analysis, stayed for the humour and chill atmosphere of these videos, subscribed for the based Fez take.
0:03 Instantly caught the reference to the Great Dolemite, Charlie Brown! video. Nice one, stay classy.
"when you play something as a 7 year old kid, that shit sticks in your SOUL" hearing that as i play OSRS is like UGH what the fuck that is so correct.
