  • I applied boiled linseed oil to the patina of a 1952 Vintage Dodge Truck to try and preserve its current rusted/painted rat rod esque state. If you don't care about the oil just enjoy the beautiful truck.

    I`ve watched this 72 times and will do so again !!! Just so I get the technique right ??? I love fully restored trucks but there is something magical about leaving the honest ware on these vehicles . You can actually see the history !

    Linseed oil is great for so many things. It says right on the can I have great for protecting wood handles and metal parts of yard tools so I've been applying it to my shovels, pitchforks etc. The handles are what really need protection from the elements as they tend to check and rot then break. New handles cost more than entire replacements unfortunately. Also works great as a bare wood furniture finish if rubbed out properly.

    I have watched most of your videos. I like them because they are down to earth and no cussing or putting anyone down. Most other you tubers are political and narcissistic. yours are nice. I did not see any recent posts. I noticed that you have a few trolls that say things to disrupt people who enjoy your videos and heckle you. pay no attention to them, there will always be trolls, some will even comment about this post.
    keep up the nice videos and hope to see more.

    Definitely doing this to all of my antique tractors! (Except the one that is fully restored). I'll probably cut it with some mineral spirits. I have heard that the linseed oil can leave a tacky finish, and if you cut it 50/50 with mineral spirits it removes the tackiness. Thanks for the video!

    • @lik3somethingnew892
      @lik3somethingnew892  7 лет назад

      Yes, the linseed oil does have a bit of tackiness. I have switched to using penetrol, I use a paint brush to apply it.

    Great thing to use on rust but dispose of rags, etc. you use to apply the linseed oil later...heard they can combust spontaneously if laying around.

    • @rrmerlin3402
      @rrmerlin3402 4 года назад

      Wadded up they will build up heat, maybe catch fire ( spontaneous combustion ) lay flat on non combustible surface you'll be good

    When I use linseed oil on a gun stock I cut it something like 80% mineral spirits (paint thinner) and 20% linseed oil. It bites in harder and dries faster. You can apply multiple coats and actually end up with more material on the product without the sticky goo that linseed oil full strength can become. I don't know how the linseed oil will hold up in the weather. I know on gun stocks it isn't considered a weather resistant finish.
    That IS a great patina.

    • @lik3somethingnew892
      @lik3somethingnew892  8 лет назад

      Thanks for the suggestion, I may try it. I have been experimenting with Japan Drier to speed up the drying process.

    • @akawireguy1197
      @akawireguy1197 8 лет назад

      I strongly suspect linseed oil isn't the long term protector you are looking for. There have been a lot of experiments run on metal protection using different products. Surprisingly one of the best anti rust products out there is plain old WD-40. I wonder if it would do a better job of giving you the "arrested decay" patina protection you are looking for.

    • @lik3somethingnew892
      @lik3somethingnew892  8 лет назад

      I tried WD-40 prior to the linseed oil, but it only lasted for about week.

    • @akawireguy1197
      @akawireguy1197 8 лет назад +1

      Probably the WD-40 is still there protecting but it isn't giving you the look you are looking for.
      Given you already have the linseed oil, if it was me I'd mix it maybe 70/30 with mineral spirits, spray it on on a warm day, and let it dry. Don't wipe it, just spray and let dry. Keep reapplying until you get the look you are looking for and then add some more. On a warm day you should be able to apply several coats.
      Maybe try it on a piece of scrap steel and see what you get.

  • @franka8377
    @franka8377 8 лет назад +1

    Their is a much easier way by shooting it with clearcoat. It will preserve the rust and original paint. The best part is you will only have to do it once.

    • @lik3somethingnew892
      @lik3somethingnew892  8 лет назад +4

      +Frank Alestra I thought about doing that, but when the clear coat starts coming off after several years it doesn't look good. The prep work that would have to be done to get the clear coat to adhere properly would disturb the original patina. I would probably do that to another vehicle, but I think this truck is soo perfect the way it it, I don't want to mess it up. Thanks for watching. :)

    • @squach6239

      +Lik3SomethingNew Sweety that might be how it looked when you got it but that ain't the original paint. I had a bone stock 52 Dodge 5 window, and I can tell you those teardrop l lights on the front fender aren't original and the wholes on the hood fixed center for the hood ornament have been filled and the wholes on the sides of the batwing hood for trim pieces have been filled! really love that body style,regret to this day having sold mine.

    Thanks for the video, love the truck. Looking for front/top fender markers (turn signals?) like you have on this truck. Doesn't appear that they were stock with your truck. Looking for similar flush setup for my 51 Ford F2 in patina-progress, don't like the school bus style that it came with. Any thoughts as to what year vehicle those lights are from?? Thanks!

    • @lik3somethingnew892
      @lik3somethingnew892  7 лет назад +1

      They are cab marker lights from a big truck. Older trucks from the 50's to mid 60's have glass lenses that are super cool if you can find them.

    • @lik3somethingnew892

      +Matt Young I used scotch brite scouring pads that are made for cleaning pots and pans on the truck. I used it to smooth and remove some of the surface rust. I didn't go down into the metal, I removed just enough so that when I rubbed oil on the truck, fibers wouldn't come off and stick. My husband has many trucks and projects and I have seen a lot of them rust away fast. I fell in love with the look of this truck and have just been doing my own experiments to try and save it, I'm definitely no expert or anything. :)
