I finished reading The Poppy War yesterday and please be aware that basically every single trigger warning you can imagine is applicable, so if you're a teen or are particularly sensitive, this isn't a book for you I'm afraid. I am serious, guys - self-harm, rape (including a pregnant woman at one point - just so you know), all kinds of violence and cruelty, and all very graphic! So please take that into account that this is a book about war and war crimes commited by ruthless, heartless people, and the contents do mirror that.
Other than that, a really good book, made me think, asked some interesting questions, I gave it a 4.5/5 stars C:

I should have made it clearer in this video (I do mention it on goodreads!) but considering it's inspired by the Rape of Nanking, it's grim!

I loved 'And every morning the way home gets longer and longer'. Its a novella about a grandfather who has Alzheimer's. His loved ones are trying to cope with this change. It was so heartbreaking and emotional, for such a short read. Also I am loving 'To kill a mockingbird'. I am buddy reading that one with another booktuber.

BookswithEmilyFox The Name of the Wind was the first fantasy book I’ve ever read (and HIGH fantasy at that! I’m surprised I was able to follow along lol I’m usually not good at remembering things as I read so me following along with this one is surprising for me.) I loved it but I don’t want to be left hanging because it’s been soooooo long since the 2nd book and who KNOWS when book 3 is coming out!

For thrillers I can recommend Stillhouse Lake. I had to take a break from thrillers recently because I had read a few disappointing or just plain bad ones last year, similarly to you, but that one surprised me. Finally a female character in a thriller that was badass and not an alcoholic! 😁

Haha! I actually liked the "The Cruel Prince". I just finished reading it this morning. It was an easy read and I demolished the book in a day and a half. I don't read a lot of YA books, so maybe that is why I liked it??? I am looking forward to the sequel, "The Wicked King" which should be out in January. I have also just read "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and enjoyed it, as well. It was different from my normal reading pursuits and found it to be a quick read. I have put "The Poppy War" on my list of books to read!!!

I’m so glad you liked Emma! Did you know the movie Clueless is an adaptation? It’s so fun watching it again knowing that it’s an adaptation. Some of the literary devices like the constant miscommunication and conversations throughout the book where both people think they’re having completely different conversations while they’re talking to each other are in the movie too. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it, but I would recommend. ❤️

My biggest gripe with The Cruel Prince was that it felt like backstory. It was all build up to the actual book Holly Black wanted to write. I read 300 pages of a 370 page book before anything happened and now I need to buy another book if I want the real story? No thanks. If a story needs that much build up make it a 600 page book - don't split it in half and call it two books when it's not. People are more likely to read a huge book than to read one boring one and be compelled to pick up the next!

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  6 лет назад +1

      Yaaaaaas
It's one of my pet peeves with YA books! Too many first books feel like prologues. Shatter Me was like that and even La Belle Sauvage... stop splitting books so much!

    1. I am now excited to pick up The Poppy War!
    2. Your opinion on The Wife Between Us was my opinion on The Woman In The Window - another alcoholic woman; and a twist that I saw coming from the very beginning of the book, and literally laughed out loud when it was revealed.
    3. Another great video from you. I love it!

Outstanding fantasy series. The third book is slated to come out in February of next year. They are very long books but its a fast read. I highly recommend.

I just finished The humans by Matt Haig, I rarely read any Sci-fi (rarely is understatement because I read only 2 Sci-fi book in my entire life).

I'm glad that you enjoyed Emma since it is my favorite Jane Austen novel. And I agree with you on The Outsider. The beginning is really strong and had me very invested into the story, but towards the middle it became a bit slow and the end was okay in my opinion, I did expect more from the ending though. I haven't been able to read as much as I would like to. I pick up books, but after like 50 pages I put them down again.

I’m currently reading the second book in the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams. I read the first one in June and absolutely loved it and this one is just as amazing so far. They are quite big books and I know you have a couple of those to read before the end of the year, but if you ever have time, I absolutely recommend it. It’s the best fantasy I’ve read in a long time.

I thought I was the unpopular opinion when it came to The Wife Between Us.
I didn’t really like it at all. It had unnecessary twists which I think were meant to “shock” the reader, but even though I wasn’t expecting them, it didn’t “shock” me. My reaction was literally “oh....ok...I guess.” It was more confusing as to why it was even necessary😂
It was an ok book, I’m so happy I’m not alone in my opinion😂

I just finished The Poppy War yesterday! I thought it was really good! I felt like it was missing a little world building but I would totally recommend it to fantasy lovers! I couldn’t put it down! And yes Stephen King’s books are all in one universe

I saw it as the main character coming from a small village and then only slowly learning about the world/gods. Hopefully we'll get more in book 2 :)

BookswithEmilyFox I agree. And we only know what the character knows. So we’re always on the same page as Rin and learning along with her.

You got me at: There is no romance XDDD Because it is not always needed. We need to get over that.
love to find out about all the sci-fi books you read

Right?! It gets frustrating that books become only about romance. It's like authors don't have enough content without it, especially for female characters!

Hey! Sorry if you've already read it and I missed you mentioning it, but I highly recommend Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke.

Oh I've been trying to find it! I want the edition that match the ones I have on my shelf so it's been a struggle haha
I think I'll get it on book depository!

Okay, 'The Poppy War' is getting rave reviews from everyone who's really into fantasy, so I feel that I need to add it to my collection pretty soon. I just read 'Legion' this month and sadly I really didn't like it. I'm mentioning it in my August Wrap-up that'll go online this Thursday, but I'm totally blaming myself for this, as the detective genre is really my least favorite genre. Also because it was so short, I ended up feeling like the whole thing was just rushed. I'll hopefully be picking up Elantris in September so I hope that I'll eb able to start raving about Brandon Sanderson again afterwards :)

I think that this hype of domestic thrillers is because of the popularity of Gone Girl and Woman On A Train. I didn't read either but so many people raved about both, and then the movies came out and people raved more... idk. I don't read thrillers so I'm not the best judge.

There are plenty of F/F romance books out there but admittedly most of them, or at least the ones I’ve read, aren’t very good or are just okay. Hopefully there will be more choices in the future.

    SPOILER!!!!
I absolutely agree with your opinion of the Only Human - I really liked the first two book, but the third one was purely disappointing. I mean they were living with whatever they were living with for 9 years! And they were talking about it like they were just hopping to a slightly interesting tropical island or anything... It was bad.

I read 8 or 9 books in June but it was an eh reading month... I read and really enjoyed Station Eleven by Emily Mandel. And so far in July I've only finished 2 books but really loved Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

Can't wait to read The Poppy War, it seems great!!
The best books of June for me were Assassin's Quest by Robin Hobb and Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire!

BookswithEmilyFox If you want to start at the beginning, you should start with Assassin's Apprentice, the first book in the Farseer Trilogy :) Hobb is an excellent writer, hope you'll love her books!
