I don't know what kind of magic you do, but every time I see one of your videos I end up soooo excited to just drop everything go read. I've been in a reading slump for a couple months now and I'm so used to booktube that most of the time it doesn't motivate me anymore, you know? But you always make me excited, so thank your for that! 😘
same here! I've always loved reading but since I started keeping up with this channel, I've gotten back into reading consistently & I've found some truly magical books via Emily's suggestions!
When breath becomes air is one of my favorite books of all time. I do agree with you that the second half is the better half of the book. I am a medical student myself, so the first part where he is studying to become a doctor was also very interesting to me, but I can see how that would not be the case for everybody. Also, there are probably only 4 books that made me cry as an adult: this epilogue was one of them. As with many of the other books on this list, I feel it is very underrated on booktube. I love that you just cover books that you are interested in, and not just what is being hyped at the moment
I've never even heard of "Children of Time" but WOW it sounds AMAZING - I will for SURE be picking it up!!! like wow, spiders becoming as smart as humans?? sign me uppppp
Circe is also on my TBR. You killed it this month. I had such a reading slump and finished 4 which is amazing considering I just wasn't into reading for some strange reason. Iron Cage and Dear Martin are the two I read that I recommend. I am now reading Let me lie and enjoying reading a thriller as its not my normal type of book. Here's to hoping we both have a good reading month. My goal is 10 we will see how I do! Also you top is amazing and very where is waldo esque - where did you find it? xo
Can’t wait for the beginners guide to sci-fi! I have been dying to try more. I have only read 3 sci-fi books (that I can remember) and hated one of them but enjoyed the others. Really wanting to get into more but they scare me lol.
Enders Game , which I wasn’t a fan of. Jurassic Park and the Lost world by Michael Crichton which I really enjoyed. I have been wanting to try some more of his books but haven’t got to it yet.
OMG finally someone who also didn't love Enders Game lol Everyone recommends it to me and I'm like... read it... it was meh! I've been wanting to read more from Crichton! I'll definitely look into them :D
Yes! I always felt like I was the only person who didn’t love it. I also read it because everyone was saying it was so good, and I found it boring and I couldn’t stand the characters lol.
I really like fantasy and slightly terrified of sci-fi. I want to start reading it but it quite hard to get into. So I’m very excited for your video about beginner sci-fi recommendations! Love your wrap ups! ❤️
I always thought they were pretty similar or that people that love one should love the other lol I guess it can be intense if you jump into the harder ones right away... hence the guide coming :D
Can't wait for the beginner's guide to sci-fi :D I read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch in March and loved it and it made me want to discover more sci-fi!!
Hey, girl. You should really try James Hawkins. I promise you will love him. I started with ‘Shady Cross’ and I couldn’t stop reading his books. You will love ‘Brothers and Bones’ and ‘The inside dark’.
You read so much!!! And a lot of sci-fi, too. I listen to a lot of audio books at work. Some physical books I read at home or on break. I'm at 115 books this year so far in my reading challenge on goodreads. :)
Hi Emily! Have you read Touch by Claire North? The idea sounds a bit similar to Altered Carbon, but Touch is really good! I listened to the Touch as an audiobook and the narrator is wonderful. Highly recommended it if you have yet to read it, it was a 5/5 star-read for me 🙂
I had the same experience reading Altered Carbon. I have been reading it for so long and finally just put it away and I will try some other time to finish it.
Hi Emily. How are you doing? That is amazing that you finished 15 books in one month. My max is usually between 2 to 4. I will usually listen to audio books and I make it a habit to read 3 to 4 chapters a day. I actually have the Diviners trilogy, but I never got around to reading them yet. You have definitely encouraged me to start on them. I am currently reading/listening to Saint's Blood, being the third book in the Gentlemen Greatcoats quartet by Sebastien De Castell. I also, for some odd reason dove into and have now read the first 4 chapters of the book Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Its made up of lots of conversations, but I found that the characters are very distinct. When I have time, I did pick up the audiobook Pandoras Star along with its sequel. I will let you know what I think of that one later on. Also, I have started but have not made a lot of progress on the book kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. I am not sure what to think of that one yet because it's in the first person and I usually wind up thinking that I'm missing a lot of things but the store took me by surprise and I am curious since I heard several other people talk about on RUclips. Happy reading.
I so need to read the Diviners and The Power. Maybe I’ll read The Power this month, I just purchased Children of Time but I’m scared of spiders so now I’m like ahhhhhh! Lol. I always get great recommendations from your channel.
Really loving this hairstyle, you look so pretty Emily! I was just wondering what books should I read to get into adult fantasy? Im really interested in that genre, I just don't know where to start!
Super excited for the beginner's guide to sci-fi! I feel like I read a lot more when I was younger, but now I have no idea what to pick up. I haven't read Children of Time, but I did read The Wolf and the Tiger, the first book in a fantasy series by the same author, and really enjoyed it. It's a huge book, too, but I definitely recommend it! Once I finish that trilogy I'll have to decide whether I want to tackle the intelligent spiders or not. Your review makes it sound like it's worth it! Also, thanks for talking about Circe! I've seen it everywhere but haven't heard a review before now. I'll definitely be picking that one up.
Always happy when I see you have a new video! I finally read The Final Empire this month and started The Well of Ascension and it's getting quite interesting. I'm curious to see what you will think of The Alloy of Law. I also read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks this month and looooved it. So interesting and well written. Have you read any books about science like that?
Another lovely video from you Emily! When breath becomes air completely destroyed me,i still think about that book on the daily. And hahaha how long is the audiobook wait for Diviners book 2? Excited for the beginners guide to Sci FI!!
I've been wanting to read more sci-fi books, so I'll be very much looking forward to a beginner's guide to sci-fi video! But I don't do spiders, not in any shape or size :0
If you liked When Breath becomes air, I highly recommend The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. It’s heartbreaking, but unbelievably gorgeous and wonderful. I tried to watch Altered Carbon and I felt the same way that you did. Excessive and crude sex for no real reason. And it kills me because there were so many cool ideas here and I couldn’t finish it.
I just subscribed! I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel! You are absolutely stunning and so relaxing to listen to. You remind me of Spencer from Pretty Little Liars!
I read 4. The wedding date by jasmine guillory (and regreted it because I know better than to read romance on purpose) Elements of mind by Walter hunt Renegades And Obsidio.
I feel exactly the same about Altered Carbon, the tv series. I couldn't get through it, and I was willing it to end because I thought it would be great, but it was overlong. I really loved the premise, but I really disliked the show. Also, a heads up, there is a lot of violence in it, I mean, an awful lot and mostly gratuitous violence, so it's something to bear in mind if that's something you're uncomfortable with. I've never felt I had any problems with violence on tv before, but this was too much for me. Oh, and a lot of sex and an awful lot of nudity.
Emma Jo I gave up on the series as well, for all of the reasons you mentioned. I actually wish I had quit watching sooner, I was waiting for it to get better. First Netflix series I despised.
I hate spiders, yet found myself purchasing the ebook with audio and have already gotten into The Children of Time. Cannot pass up a good sci-fi. Thanks for recommending it
I am from Greece. And i got the book The song of achilles in greek. I didn't know that it was transleted when you show it in a video. But suddenly i find in a bookshop and i bought it. And now Circe i find it in a store in english and i want to ask if it's hard english. And now i am finishing Where'd you go Bernadette in english.
Man’s Search for Meaning is my moms favorite book. I’m so scared to read it though because it is such a heavy topic. I know it’s important to read these kinds of books but it’s so hard!
I know right? When I was listening to Children of time a few months back, I remember I thought "well there are only a few different ways this could end", and I was sure I had all of them covered. NOPE. Didn't see it coming either!
SPOILERS Seriously don't read the rest... Ok when the humans come back to the planet and the spiders are forming that "wall" around the planet I was like WTF haha And then when they end up wanting to not kill everyone... MIND BLOWN!!
BookswithEmilyFox yes!!! I might be mistaken but I think I heard something about some kind of sequel that's in the works? I'd imagine it would be the continuation of the very last chapter. I don't know how I feel about that. On the one hand I'm really excited about it, on the other hand... what if it's not as good? I need to check though.
I haven't read altered carbon but I highly recommend the tv show ! It has nudity in it which annoyed me because a lot of it wasn't necessary... even narcos had less nudity. But the story by itself is really good. It has tons of sarcasm and the actor that plays the sleeve is so hot
Hi Emily! Have you read Fall of Giants by Ken Follett? It is a WWI historical fiction. It is GINORMOUS (985 pages), but has really great reviews if you want to check it out. I am hoping to read it in May. :)
I read Behind Closed Doors which was enjoyable but still looking for an awesome thriller with an "I didn't see that coming!" ending. Reading Behind Her Eyes in May so maybe that'll do it! 😊
The Breakdown by the same author is really good. I read both back to back and I didn’t really enjoy Behind Closed Doors, but really enjoyed The Breakdown.
For Altered Carbon, the entire show is filled with sex. The show can’t go five minutes (probably less) without sex. So, just a warning for the show. I’m glad you found some other books you liked though this month.
I know you’re too busy reading to read all the comments what people must must give you but here goes... you must read the pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet it’s a period piece and I give it a solid 20 out of 10 all the roads are SF The stone man by lLuke Smithers, WWW by Robert J Sawyer (Trilogy), childhoods end By Arthur C Clarke, Calculating God by Robert J Sawyer & One second after by William R Forstchen . I have read and agree with 99 percent of your reviews I love your work your, your zeal and let’s not forget your enthusiasm Thank you
I was thinking of getting Children of Time on kindle, maybe combine it with the audiobook. I heard the sample and it sounded too... technical I guess, so I was kinda unsure about it, but I've heard great things.
Hi Emily!! I love your videos and the books you read, im a big Stephen King fan but trying to get more into sci fi so im writting down all your recomendarions :) just wanted to tell you that I started watching Altered Carbon and is just soooo confusing, and quite boring actually so i was hoping the book was better but i see its not :/ Thanks again for another great video❤️
I'm glad I am not the only one who get thrown off by random sex-scenes and sexualisation of female characters (it is usually so badly written as well.)
I always get so much backlash (usually on goodreads not so much here) about my opinions about that! If i can give you so many examples after 100 pages... it's bad! I'm always glad when others agree and confirm it's not just me overthink it!
I agree! I could be super excited about the story and then those random scenes pop up and turn me completely off the entire book. I can appreciate a well written love scene between characters if there’s the right build-up to it and it either contributes to the story or character development, but over-sexualization of female characters just makes me think of the writer as a sleaze-ball.
I love to do the few tests on books/movies like the bechdel test... or the one where "if you can replace the female character by a sexy lamp you need to rewrite it..." 😂
I read "The Shogun's Queen" (which is historical fiction set in feudal Japan, but I think anyone who likes fantasy or YA fantasy would enjoy!) and yeah now I want to recommend it to everyone!♡ It got me out of a reading slump after slogging very very slowly through Red Rising! I has debated reading/watching Altered Carbon actually but now I might just ... avoid it? LOL
I'm hoping to have it up before the end of May!! If there are any beauty products you want to hear how to pronounce in French you can just leave them in the comment section of my April Fav :)
I´ve only managed one episode of Altered Carbon, I think it is as bad as the book! Also, I´ve never heard of Children of Time, but ordering it right away, thanks for the tip! I loved Diviners, especially the language, I love when authors include the things like that, it makes the book more realistic imo... I´ve also loved Psychopath test, have you read The Most Dangerous Animal of All? It is a non fiction about the Zodiac Killer, I finished it in one sitting - tho I would recommend it as a physical book, since the pictures are important in that one :)
I'm not sure when I'll watch the show but I'm not as excited now :/ I thought Children of Time was older but it was published in 2015 which is probably why it's not as well known yet! I'll definitely try and get my hands on it!
I had to force myself to finish altered carbon (the book) because I could'nt care less about the main character and ugh, the way he thinks about women... it just threw me off. As for the show, it's barely better. It has a few good moments but that's all. And I hate spiders but I'll probably pick up "Children of Time" because it sounds really interesting. I can't wait for your beginner guide to scifi because it'll probably make me discover new books to read! ps: I'm really glad that my friend recommended me your channel cause it's awesome :D
I'm trying to read Altered Carbon at the moment. I enjoyed the show and I personally have no problem with violence, nudity, sex, etc. The book, however, all the sex reads like some sort of young dude fantasy when the character's supposed to be this super trained soldier-type, master of his own mind, older man character so it really just doesn't make any sense for him to be thinking of boobs while people are trying to kill him and stuff.
So excited for the beginners guide to sci-fi video!
I don't know what kind of magic you do, but every time I see one of your videos I end up soooo excited to just drop everything go read. I've been in a reading slump for a couple months now and I'm so used to booktube that most of the time it doesn't motivate me anymore, you know? Isa - ommmmgg sammmeee
That's the best compliment!! ❤️
same here! I've always loved reading but since I started keeping up with this channel, I've gotten back into reading consistently & I've found some truly magical books via Emily's suggestions!
Saame
See? Magic 🤔😅

Do you have any tutorials on this makeup look? It is so natural and pretty.
Cheryl McCormick i was going to ask the same! I looove it!
Altered Carbon on Netflix is really good!
WOW Emily, that is a lot of books, I think the most I have read in one month is two maybe 3, you ROCK Emily.
I've never even heard of "Children of Time" but WOW it sounds AMAZING - I will for SURE be picking it up!!! like wow, spiders becoming as smart as humans?? sign me uppppp
It was so different!!! I hope you'll love it too!!
Big smart spiders.... ew. Must read!
Haha exactly :D
I'm so happy you loved The Diviners! The characters are just THE BEST. And the audiobooks are amazing!
Yasss, I need a sci-fi guide desperately!
You should make a video on short reads (under 200 pages). Just watched a ton from other booktubers, but none matched with my tastes.
She has very good summarising skills.😍
Can’t wait for the beginners guide to sci-fi! I have been dying to try more. I have only read 3 sci-fi books (that I can remember) and hated one of them but enjoyed the others. Really wanting to get into more but they scare me lol.
What were they? I'm curious!
Enders Game , which I wasn’t a fan of.
Jurassic Park and the Lost world by Michael Crichton which I really enjoyed. I have been wanting to try some more of his books but haven’t got to it yet.
OMG finally someone who also didn't love Enders Game lol Everyone recommends it to me and I'm like... read it... it was meh!

Yes! I always felt like I was the only person who didn’t love it. I also read it because everyone was saying it was so good, and I found it boring and I couldn’t stand the characters lol.
Yayy droped everything to see this vid ! I also really liked The Diviners !
Great reads for the month! I also finished 15 books....how that happened, I have no idea lol
I’ve read two books this month. Scythe and Darkly Dreaming Dexter both awesome!!
Can't wait for your beginners' guide to sci-fi! Really looking forward to it :)
I reread the diviners this month. Love it! I love Libba Bray in general. Great and terrible beauty was a great trilogy as well.
thanks for the warning on Children of Time.. i was going to read it because i LOVE sci-fi but I am absolutely terrified of spiders!
I really enjoyed the Power and I still think about it even though I read it a year ago! Very thought provoking ! :)
Oh god I am SO looking forward to your beginner's guide to SciFi!
You should always rock a high ponytail, it looks awesome on you!
I really like fantasy and slightly terrified of sci-fi. I want to start reading it but it quite hard to get into. So I’m very excited for your video about beginner sci-fi recommendations! Love your wrap ups! ❤️
I always thought they were pretty similar or that people that love one should love the other lol
I guess it can be intense if you jump into the harder ones right away... hence the guide coming :D
15 books?! Hell yeah!!! That’s amazing! I need to read Circe!!!
Can't wait for the beginner's guide to sci-fi :D I read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch in March and loved it and it made me want to discover more sci-fi!!
Ted Chiang is a literary gift. His stories are phenomenal. Hope you enjoy them!
You're the first person i follow on booktube (didn't knew it existed). Really enjoying your feedback on books, and learning about new ones to try
When Breath Becomes Air wrecked me. I read it at the being of the year and I loved it.
Hey, girl. You should really try James Hawkins. I promise you will love him. I started with ‘Shady Cross’ and I couldn’t stop reading his books. You will love ‘Brothers and Bones’ and ‘The inside dark’.
I listened to the audiobook of The Nightingale this month.
Not only was the story great, but the audio book was really good too.
Highly recommended it if you have yet to read it, it was a 5/5 star-read for me 🙂
Your hair looks so pretty like that!! You’re beautiful☺️☺️
I’m really looking forward to the Beginners Guide to Sci-Fi!
I had the same experience reading Altered Carbon. I have been reading it for so long and finally just put it away and I will try some other time to finish it.
So happy that you read The Diviners! 😍 It’s a quartet and I can’t wait for the last book to come out! 💕💕💕
I am not sure what to think of that one yet because it's in the first person and I usually wind up thinking that I'm missing a lot of things but the store took me by surprise and I am curious since I heard several other people talk about on RUclips. Happy reading.
Those smart spiders sound like my worst nightmare lol!
I would say something from Brandon Sanderson. Either the Mistborn trilogy or Warbreaker (it's available for free online on his website!)
BookswithEmilyFox thank you so much for responding! I love how interactive you are with your fans, keep up the good work!!
It's my favorite part! :D
Yes! A beginners guide to sci fi!! 👍🏻
YASSS THE DIVINERS
If you haven't yet, read her Gemma Doyle trilogy. I liked it a lot more than the Diviners. :)
I hope you like Stories of Your Life...I loved that short story collection! As always, love your videos! :)
And hahaha how long is the audiobook wait for Diviners book 2?
Excited for the beginners guide to Sci FI!!
I listened to The Diviners this month as well, I liked it a lot!
why did "I'm not going to rate someone's life" make me laugh so much
I have the diviners on my TBR too, I watched the first episodes of altered carbon but I wasn't a fan of it , looking forward to your sci fi video 💖
I've been wanting to read more sci-fi books, so I'll be very much looking forward to a beginner's guide to sci-fi video! But I don't do spiders, not in any shape or size :0
The altered carbon netflix is pretty interesting and crazy. But it's an awesome tv show :)

I was reading When Breath becomes air this month, but I had to dnf for a while because I couldn’t focus on it.
Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy any of the books I read in April, however school is over so I have so much time to read more! :D
Oh my, I'm totally freaking afraid of spiders!! And I so wanted to read Children of Time! *hesitating now*
I read 4.
The wedding date by jasmine guillory (and regreted it because I know better than to read romance on purpose)
Elements of mind by Walter hunt
Renegades
And Obsidio.
I only read one book in april.
Worst Case by by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge.
The third book in Michael Bennett series.
I feel exactly the same about Altered Carbon, the tv series. I couldn't get through it, and I was willing it to end because I thought it would be great, but it was overlong. I really loved the premise, but I really disliked the show.

The spiders aren't from Mars are they? Couldn't resist a Bowie joke 😂. I like Adrian Tchaikovsky but nope to the book if there are giant spiders.
I know right? When I was listening to Children of time a few months back, I remember I thought "well there are only a few different ways this could end", and I was sure I had all of them covered. NOPE. Didn't see it coming either!
SPOILERS
Seriously don't read the rest...
Ok when the humans come back to the planet and the spiders are forming that "wall" around the planet I was like WTF haha
And then when they end up wanting to not kill everyone...
Where is that shirt from?! So cute!
I haven't read altered carbon but I highly recommend the tv show ! It has nudity in it which annoyed me because a lot of it wasn't necessary... even narcos had less nudity. But the story by itself is really good. It has tons of sarcasm and the actor that plays the sleeve is so hot
I wanna read children of time even more now!! 😩
That hairstyle is amazing on u😍
Hi Emily! Have you read Fall of Giants by Ken Follett? It is a WWI historical fiction. It is GINORMOUS (985 pages), but has really great reviews if you want to check it out. I am hoping to read it in May. :)
I need to read the Diviners!!
The Diviners is a quartett I believe ✌
Have you thought about vlogging I’d love reading vlogs from you!
The When Breath Becomes Air epilogue is one of the saddest things I ever read. And I felt the same way, it's definitely impossible to rate.
I read Behind Closed Doors which was enjoyable but still looking for an awesome thriller with an "I didn't see that coming!" ending. Reading Behind Her Eyes in May so maybe that'll do it! 😊
I don't think you'll see that ending coming... lol
BookswithEmilyFox - yay i hope so! Will let you know 😙
The Breakdown by the same author is really good. I read both back to back and I didn’t really enjoy Behind Closed Doors, but really enjoyed The Breakdown.
Kim Lake - cool that one's definitely on my list too! ☺
For Altered Carbon, the entire show is filled with sex. The show can’t go five minutes (probably less) without sex. So, just a warning for the show.
I’m glad you found some other books you liked though this month.
It's weird because some shows have gratuitous sex scenes (like GOT) but I'm fine with it. They just don't feel as sexist as others (like this book...)
I know you’re too busy reading to read all the comments what people must must give you but here goes... you must read the pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet it’s a period piece and I give it a solid 20 out of 10 all the roads are SF
The stone man by lLuke Smithers, WWW by Robert J Sawyer (Trilogy), childhoods end By Arthur C Clarke, Calculating God by Robert J Sawyer & One second after by William R Forstchen . I have read and agree with 99 percent of your reviews

I was thinking of getting Children of Time on kindle, maybe combine it with the audiobook. I heard the sample and it sounded too... technical I guess, so I was kinda unsure about it, but I've heard great things.
I’m so early wow! You read a lot of books this month
Hi Emily!! I love your videos and the books you read, im a big Stephen King fan but trying to get more into sci fi so im writting down all your recomendarions :) just wanted to tell you that I started watching Altered Carbon and is just soooo confusing, and quite boring actually so i was hoping the book was better but i see its not :/
Thanks again for another great video❤️
Next video up will most likely be my "Beginner's Guide to Sci-Fi" so you'll probably be able to find exactly what you're looking for then! :)
I'm glad I am not the only one who get thrown off by random sex-scenes and sexualisation of female characters (it is usually so badly written as well.)
I always get so much backlash (usually on goodreads not so much here) about my opinions about that! If i can give you so many examples after 100 pages... it's bad!
I'm always glad when others agree and confirm it's not just me overthink it!
i love that you point these things out!! Those things ruin a book for me and i like to be warned about it haha
I love to do the few tests on books/movies like the bechdel test... or the one where "if you can replace the female character by a sexy lamp you need to rewrite it..." 😂
Did you see the Twitter post asking women how they see male authors write female anatomy? It's hilarious, and so true.
I has debated reading/watching Altered Carbon actually but now I might just ... avoid it? LOL
Also you should definitely read Beauty Queens by Libba Bray! One of my top YA books ever for the characters!
I looove uuuu srslly everyy book u say u liked i end upp lovinnnnngg
Yay!! :D
well crap lol you had me wanting to try Children of Time. It sounds really cool but I'm terrified of spiders! Like even the WORD creeps me out lol
You might not want to read about their legs moving to communicate lol
It was great though so maybe it's still worth it? :P
I so need to read the Deviners
Yay two emily videos today! Emily, when is the video on teaching us how to say words in french coming?
I'm hoping to have it up before the end of May!! If there are any beauty products you want to hear how to pronounce in French you can just leave them in the comment section of my April Fav :)
BookswithEmilyFox ! Thank you! I so agree about the copious amounts of sex. Like it never adds to the story.
I'm not sure when I'll watch the show but I'm not as excited now :/
I thought Children of Time was older but it was published in 2015 which is probably why it's not as well known yet!
I'll definitely try and get my hands on it!
Hair awesome !
What are you wearing on your lips? Gorgeous!!!
It's the Covergirl liquid lipstick (something melted pout?) in Ballerina! love it!
The spiders aren't from Mars are they? I like Adrian Tchaikovsky but nope to the book if there are giant spiders.
I agree whole-heartedly about Altered Carbon (and other books with pointless sex scenes). Totally not my thing either!
Random "forced" sex scenes are disgusting. I love a good romance which is very rare so I almost don't read romance at all.
Hope you like Stories of Your Life and Others! Interested to see what you think of The Power!
What are your favorite post apocalyptic books about a contagious disease?
Great video as always!
I have arachnophobia, maybe shouldn't read to Children Of Time? :D
TIME TO CONQUER YOUR FEARS!!
Probably not :P
BookswithEmilyFox oh shoot. :D * put the book far away * XD
Wow, people on here are reading fast. I'm lucky if I get 15 in a year sometimes. I'm at 24 for this year.
