- Franz Peter Schubert (31 January 1797 - 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer.
Schubert died before his 32nd birthday, but was extremely prolific during his lifetime. His output consists of over 600 secular vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music.
Ständchen, D 920 for Alto solo, Male Chorus & Piano (July 1827)
Librettist: Franz Grillparzer (1791-1872
Written as a tribute for the birthday of Louise Gosmar (1803-1858)
Martha Hart, mezzo soprano
Robert Shaw Chamber Singers conducted by Robert Shaw
Norman Mackenzie, piano
The soloist's delivery is gorgeous, so relaxed and full. What a performance!
Extremely moving. So well sung and played. ❤
Tremendous quality of performance and specially Schubert beautifully delivered and the soloist does a fabulous performance-- a true version of the composition
For not being native speakers excellent pronunciation while intoning perfectly! it sounds effortless - and brilliant! Bravo
This is a favorite recording of this wonderful piece. The overtones @ 5:40 give me goosebumps every time!
I love, love , love this music. A couple of decades ago I sang this in a male chorus with the renowned Canadian contralto, Maureen Forrester (er, I was no soloist -- best to blend in with the rest of them). Sadly, she's now gone, but I still have the precious memories.
She must have been incredible in this! What an experience!
Good job, Boys and Alto.... Bravo Bravo Bravo....
Off the charts! How did I miss it all these years? Thanks (again) so very much!
This is one of the most beautiful compositions I know. The performance is sublime.
so so beautifull and uplifting to my soul!
My ear detects Martha Hart and Robert Shaw Festival Singers. The clarity of this recording surpasses the CD of Schubert songs for male chorus. A superb performance rarely heard much less performed. The genius of Schubert interpreted 180 years later in superb quality the I'm sure that Schubert would shout "Bravoruf" Me, I'm just puddle from this performance!
Yes, but Florence Kopleff was warm and wonderful. That's where I heard it the very first time and I treasured that recording, both sides!! I even got a chance to sing it myself i Salzburg in the late fifties with my vocal classmates from Oberlin. Einmalig!
I liked it very much, I never heard it before, thanks for sharing! (Excuse my English)
When Klimpt painted "Schubert At The Piano", I think he had this piece in mind.
I grew up with the women's chorus version, and love both equally.
Haha, this is the third time the same exact video has been uploaded. At least it is not Janet Baker again. This is a very fine performance!
i agree
"Ständchen", D 920/921 (also known as "Notturno") is a part song for alto solo, chorus & piano, composed in 1827 ...Schubert wrote two versions, for male and female chorus ...
Good day please give me notes, I can not find it
I read that Schubert initially wrote this commissioned piece for male voices, later realizing the customer had requested it for female voices, so he rearranged it for female voicing as well.
💝💝💝 TY
J. S. Bach @ 1:52
슈베르트형 항상 감사히 잘 들을께.. 고마워
Now we know where the theme music from Succession got their inspiration

The Hyperion one with Sarah Walker is even better.
OK
I also prefer Sarah Walker as the alto singer, but credit to Schubert for this lovely piece..
Please give me notes
Remarquable ! Difficile de faire mieux ! Shubert avait réellement le sens de la musique chantée ! Le choeur masculin confère à cette musique une expression qui complète le registre des interprétations !
Aagje Heynis is far better, the best performance of the piece
What does it matter? Pointless comment.
Aafje Heynis
Many people love this song, but I can't stand it. For some reason it gets about 2/3 of the way through the song and I lose my eyesight for 1/2 a minute. idk why but i do. So this song earns a D- or maybe an F
