After being diagnosed with terminal cancer 7 years ago, I decided that my bucket list would be a British Shorthair cat. My Alfie sat on me when I came home from my daily radiation. I got another one from the same wonderful breeder in Washington state. These Brit boys have enriched my life, as well as my kids. They are one of the reasons why I'm still alive for all this time. Buying pure breed cats is not evil. No one tells people not to get purebred dogs. How sad would it be if all purebred cats died out? This almost happened to this breed after WWII. I also have 3 rescue cats. Are you depressed? Pet a BSH, then you won't be anymore.
Hope you’re still here and as healthy as u can be. I lost my dog a few years ago, the month after I had appendicitis and went to ER, they found a tumor on my kidney while looking for the pain I went into ER for. Had to have kidney removed the month after my appendix came out. Had started a new job w a decent amount of overnight travel, so a dog would be tough. But I had a month off of work to recover from the surgery and I knew it was the best time to get a new pet and bond. I started looking for cats but the adoption process was long and was flat out told I’d be lower on the list since I was a single guy working and living alone. I have the means so I went to a pet store (the one where I bought my perfectly healthy puggle that recently died after 14 years) and got my Harlequin Cream BSH. He’s likely the best pet I’ve had. Also the opposite of most everything this video says. Loves to cuddle, sit on my lap, be held, not lazy, pretty trim. I also chose not to neuter him, first pet ever, so I do believe that changes attributes, it seems it would have to. Doesn’t spray or hump or moan like everyone said he would. Also, breeders are gonna breed. Me deciding not to buy one doesn’t stop the breeder, it just means instead of my home the cat is left in a box in the woods 20 miles from their house. Aren’t people who buy from a breeder also just rescuing a cat? It’s already birthed, gotta go somewhere.
@@superthrustjon I'm doing well and so happy you have a BSH. If breeders didn't breed cats, we would lose such beauty in this life. I just adopted an orange tabby kitten at a shelter on Wednesday. We have one big happy cat family! I hope you have a great recovery and get the all clear!

You're saying that they don't like being picked up and that is not true, every day instead of my cat wasting her energy that took her 5 hours of sleep to gain, I pick her up and she gladly walks into my arms. 2. British Shorthairs like being in their families and sometimes feel lonely if they were bought alone. All other cat breeds are just the same as British Shorthairs if they did not grow up with them as they feel jealous since they're not getting all of the love from their owners. 3. My cat is rarely ever naughty, she never intentionally does the wrong thing. She only ever makes bad decisions when she genuinely needs to do something for herself as she does not understand how all of the other people would feel about it. 3. I don't live in an extremely busy place and she has never been hurt by animals because she went outside. She only ever goes outside when either there are birds or the sun is out so she can sunbathe. 4. It's not fair to just blindly say "You're not committed" as it takes effort to take care of any cat breed and not only British Shorthairs. I don't believe that all of this is fair to just talk about British Shorthairs badly and say things like "You're not committed" when it takes effort and responsibility to take care of any cat breed.
I agree. A close friend of mine has a Samoyed dog breed and a PB BS cat. They were raised together from pup and kitten - 6 years together - and are the cuddliest, affectionate, funny creatures ever. The BS will sit on your feet or your lap if he decides he likes you! It’s because of him that we are adopting a PB BS in the New Year.

My four year old grey British boy, my best friend who was an adored and very loved member of the family, died a few days ago due to complications after a medical operation. He survived the first one well a year ago, he started to have urinating problems at the age of three, and all was good, he healed well. I took care of him every day like I would care for a baby. Then later a problem in his bowel was found and two days after the operation he perished. I keep thinking what could I have done differently, I blame myself very hard about this. I promised him always that I will hold his little paw until the end, and this I did. I had never experienced a cat so well behaved, so smart and sweet, who really can look directly in your soul with his golden eyes. Getting over losing him has been more difficult than losing a person in my life, he had become such an important part of my existence. I was not ready to lose him so quickly. He lived a happy life, not one day passed that I did not tell him how much I loved him and showed deep affection. I could always truly feel how he loved me back, with his actions. Now I try to bury the sorrow by watching videos of grey Brits...
We lost our 6 years old Reggie almost 2 years ago to a sudden illness, and I still shed tears when remembering him. Reggie was a true gentleman and so very polite at all times, and brought much joy during his years with us. We adopted another BHS last year and guess what? It turned out that Ziggy is a cousin of our late Reggie, they have the same great grandfather named Huggy Bear. This discovery filled us with amazement, especially because the boys could not be further apart in temperament. Ziggy is a wild beast who enjoys killing small creatures like crickets, moths, dragonflies, spiders, and even small frogs. Oh and he has no manners whatsoever, bites hard and scratches even harder, and vocalises every single displeasure at the top of his lungs :)
I know how you feel I’ve just lost my baby who was it by a car last night I had her from a kitten she was 11 years old every day I adored her she was a beautiful family member now we are all broken
My last cat was a British Shorthair and he was with me for 17.5 years. He was the best pet I ever had. The only thing keeping me from getting another is how much they cost! Other than that, I'd get another British shorthair in a heartbeat.
I had one (found as a stray) that was about 75% British shorthair and he was the best and smartest I ever had, he was perfect in every way except he HATED all other animals, he’d attack cats dogs, it didn’t matter the size, he got cancer at 18, he’s been gone for 4 year but I still miss him, I thought it was normal for a cat to be so well behaved, he ruined me for all other cats. RIP little buddy!
Not so true. I have a British Shorthair and she IS very cuddly, she doesn't mind getting picked up. She also loves to play with my Persian Dollface (not same as her breed). She's not prone to any diseases, very heatlhy and doesn't destroy nor eat my plants too, and I have 300+ haha! I keep her inside because she's precious. Best of all... I adopted her from a shelter. :)
Most things about this isn’t even true, British shorthairs can be cuddly. It just depends they’re on their personality. Also, I have two British shorthairs they get along fine as you can see my profile picture that’s one of them. Don’t listen to people like this who have no idea what they’re on about. If you want a British shorthair get one! ❤
Got one from a rescue organization; he stayed under the sofa for first two months, took over a year before he finally wanted to be near me; two years later he loves to have his head rubbed and sits next to me on the sofa, sometimes on the lap, but has never allowed me to pick him up. He gets along with our more active American shorthair. He’s that lovely smoky gray.
This video is all wrong. I rescued mine off the streets at just 9 weeks old. He was probably dumped earlier but that is how old he was when I found him. Dumped with his father because they were male. Animals dumped in this area of the city is a real epidemic. I have rescued, fostered and help find homes for over thirty. I kept him though he was my first adoptee in my home. Near death I nursed him to health. He is my healthiest, friendliest and most lovable cat. Best potty trained and most well behaved. He is also the most playful with humans and other cats.( in fact I call him the welcome wagon). I have taken care of all breeds of cats. Cats need respect and time. Although it also comes down to human treatment. If poor they will be poor. If great they will be and develop loving, respect, and undying loyalty to you. My sisters cat she adopted from us. After a human threw him from a moving car on or yard. He protected her from an intruder over her Husky( who is too loving) to protect her. So cats really can be humans best and most protective friend.
The only accurate point was the electric wire chewing. Mine took a little poke from chewing the cord on my fan. Doesn't do it anymore. Imagine that lol.
Although I know that it was necessary, I felt bad keeping mine indoors for the first 2 weeks of living with me. I couldn't survive without the outdoors and am glad I can let her out now.
Some good advice, but my old friend is the most polite and friendly companion, I wouldn't change him for the world. When he is not sleeping he sits with me in the evenings, runs to greet me in the mornings and follows me everywhere. He doesn't scratch, bite or damage furniture. He always purrs when I give him attention or if he is just sitting next to me. Yes he is not a lap cat but given his size that is probably for the best.
I have a british shorthair it is the best cat. I got a cat from some rando who lived around the block from me, from their house. Adorable loves cuddling always climbing on top of everyone, even my cat allergic dad likes her. I'll miss her when she dies in 7 years. Argentina McCree 2014-2029.
My british shorthair is amazing...loves coming to me after I call her from any room. Never put british shorthairs in the dust, they just work out better for certain kinds of people.
My uncle has five cats, the BSH he loves most and i am also impressed of BSH… he is clever and patient, i think some reasons you have mentioned is a common questions to Alll type breeds
Recently got a bsh pedigree after loving my friends one, I will say as a kitten they are alot of work just like any other kitten but they rapidly turn into very well behaved cats, if you live in a busy area and dont want a cat to go outside without supervision. I couldn't recommend enough
Hate to break it to you, but this is all false!! I've had my British Shorthair cat for 8 years now, and he's literally so cute, very patient, always sleepy and taking naps, always hungry, likes to get playful sometimes, is very cuddly and affectionate, very clean and never broke anything around the house, last but not least, ALL cats need to get their litter box cleaned regularly. They're such an amazing breed, and in my opinion , the best!
Question, if you tried to introduce one as a kitten to a dog, would it be okay? Slowly of course, not just shoving it into a room with a dog and expect everything to go well
Adopted a British shorthair 2 days again($15), he's 4 years old after a day he's great, only thing you have right is he doesn't like to get picked up and wants his litter box clean.
We have a kitten Brit 14wks old, and he loves to cuddle. When we come home I have to pick him up, we cuddle for 5 min and then I am aloud to let him go. Same in the morning, he will sit on my lap when I do my make-up. Even blowdrying my hair won't get him to budge 😂😂 We also have a half Norwegian Forest cat, and she does not want to be picked -up, but loves to be pet.
It's so interesting to see the difference in cat culture between USA and UK, in terms of letting them outdoors or not. I only recently became aware that Americans keep their kitties indoors. It sure must save the birdies (a cat - not mine - left a headless pigeon in my back garden yesterday). I don't think that purposeful harming of cats is a problem in the UK, though. At least, definitely not in my cat-loving neighbourhood.
I think in some parts of the US it’s also to do with predators. In the UK there are very few wild animals that could hurt a Cat. Maybe an Adder? Not sure their bite is strong enough to take down a Cat. Perhaps a Fox? But to be honest a fully grown British Shorthair would be a match for a Fox. The US has to worry about a Wolf or Bear getting their Cats
I have a B.Shorthair, a rescue cat, and a dog...........they all three get on brilliantly and play well together. My B.Shorthair is the youngest and adores her housemates, she doesn't seem to have a favourite family member.
I don't want to see this stupid video honestly. Any cat is almost the same. British short hair is extremely cute and the best cat to getl it's difficult in some countries like mine to get a british shorthair. We got 2 british shorthairs they will arrive tomorrow. I have a big sister she has 1 british shorthair she had her for almost 3 years and my sisters cat has allot of fun with her and cuddle with her allot. Plus if someone has allergies british short hair decreases there hair from falling. My sister and brother has allergies to cats but when my sister visits my second sister she didn't get any allergic reactions or felt so etching annoying them everything was good.
I have a British Shorthair cat but we didnt buy it our friend had a cat and when it had kittens we asked if we could get it instead of them selling it to a Pet Store does that count as buying?
I have a British shorthair cat that lives across the road from me and she is very cute and a British shorthair cat (not my cat) comes to our house every single day and she is so cute
My british shorthair chocolate tortie is pure pedigree and a very healthy cat and I have not seen mention of major health concerns in the breed hence their long life span which you raise. You do not elaborate on what these claimed nasty health issues are and best you clarify if you expect your comments to be taken seriously.
My gf just found a british shorthair at her backyard. Gray one (British blue), male, exactly like in the video If you are at poland and looking for adoption one, just comment. We already have 13 dogs, he seems scared to be around them. He is cold (cause it's winter) and doest move alot probably sick or depressed. My gf mom says that he hear this cat days before, means he possibly spend 2 days at the backyard. There is not alot neighbors here and as far as we know, nobody claims him.
All the British shorthair cats that I have met are very friendly and like to be picked up and enjoy a cuddle. Plus they are cute and boofy! I agree re going to a shelter to get a cat . But if people want a pure bred that is their choice I guess. Sometimes people choose a pure bred cat/dog due to their temperament etc.
Temperament doesn’t matter with cats. Any cat can suit anyone’s lifestyle, they don’t require training like dogs, are way easier to take care of so temperament doesn’t matter. And you can find every cat temperament in a shelter. Cat colours actually play a huge roll in cat temperaments. Black cats are known for being dog like and super friendly, orange cats are known for being clowns, tuxedos are mischievous, tortoiseshells and calicos are all sass, white cats are typically gentle and calm. :)
Do NOT get this cat if affection is important to you. They are happy to be petted on the floor at arms length. But they won't sit on your lap or anywhere close to you, and they hate being cuddled or picked up. The cat at 0:52 has been superimposed into the image. They rarely settle down where you can reach out and touch them.
Never knew anything about them till I recently rescued a 6 week kitten, about the top 10 ... Can't agree more about how much work they are..geez lewis... 😵💫😵💫 This kitty jumps up the walls trying to see how high she can get, hides behind everything and jumps out and scares me every chance she gets.. lol but at least it says that they become well behaved after these kitty years.. thank goodness 🙄🤞 😂😂 Cleo-patra is a handful
Ive got a british shorthair thats my best friend in the whole world. He really likes men only for some reason and has attached himself to me hardcore. There friendship is hardcore and demanding. Its true about everything they say on here about them. Mine has a problem with eating plastic garbage on the ground so I have to watch him for that. They tend to be big cats from what ive seen and mine is pretty bulky with a big round head large mouth with very big sharp teeth and a little curved tail tip. They also need lots of brushing compared to my siamese that needs little to no brushing. They also tend to not like to be picked up much so little children may get bitten when messing with them but they absolutely love being on laps.
Should you let those poor kitties die in that condition then? I bought mine from a terrible owner because it was in a really bad state and its really happy now..they are already born and going to suffer !
The second you pick mine up. It stares into the emptiness, it is thinking, I'm making a run for it. Wait....wait...for him to losen his grip..... just a little bit....then Shawshank Redemption!
I have a lot of respect for you for putting this out to protect cats from unprepared homes. I'm not looking to get this kind of cat any time soon, but I still find this empowering.
In Southeast Asia British shorthairs are still protected and couldn't be found in shelters and streets. Getting a British shorthair means paying thousands to buy or breed it
Oh the same people that disparage black cats. No way. I’ve had lots of British cats and black cats. BTW black cats are very lucky in Britain. ❤🐈⬛❤️🐈⬛❤️
While I agree with most of the Basic info on here which actaully applies to ALL cats IE dont get them if you have small kids and dont leave cats outside ECT. I disagree on that they dont play well with other cats. I purchased my big Blue Male as a kitten from a reputalbe catery first and two years later we got two little girl Britts from a horrid Catery they were rescued from. At first my male wasnt interesed but after a while he enjoyed thier company and they would play. My females remained active all thier lives, my male, not so much, he was a lazy boy!. All of my babies lived were healthy and lived to be between 18 and my last one just passed away at age 20. We took very good care of them and you do need to brush them daily and brushed thier teeth!! This is critial for both Dogs and Cats! Get them used to it when thier young, it will prolong thier lives and keep them healthy. . To me, they are the ONLY cat breed I would have. They never marked teritory,Never clawed our furniture after a little discouraging, and they were the best breed we have ever had. Smart as hell too. We had ours doing all the basic dog tricks, they did them better then most dogs. We sure miss all three of them.
Yeah I had a British shorthair for years and she is the mother every little cat we ever got in the house even when they were kittens she was all over them licking them and hugging him and everything and she was all over us and we have another one now and she’s just like that sweet too I don’t know I’ve never known a British shorthair to look and act like you describe them rather disappointed
Wow, such weird generalization's. Brits are affectionate and though laid back, they do play. They do like other animals, I have sisters who think every dog they meet is their friend. Just like other long haired cats, they have to be brushed. Reasons you might not want to watch this persons videos? They know absolutely nothing outside of ordinary knowledge of cats. Just another, "Get a shelter cat first" Duh.
I want to adopt but i cant find any cat to adopt, the only way i can adopt a cat here is by paying. No animal shelter here and stray animals will bite me if i touch them even after i give them food for days they won't let me touch them.
I have a British shorthair cat and their beautiful great company and go get one they’re just kinda expensive and everything here is true but they are really calm
Mine only likes to be picked up upside down and held like a baby. Upside down you can walk around with him or even dance. Right side up-NOT! Loves belly rubs
My advice: don't get a British Short Hair since they are too soft, affectionate, loving. You won't be able to leave the house anymore without missing them, or seeing people without talking about them and showing pictures of them that will take all your phone storage space. You will not enjoy vacation as much if they are with petsitter. Those things will only get problematic more and more overtime with the bond you'll form with them. True story. My spouse and I became crazy cat parents the first day we met our British Shorthair girl.
Never seen a happier cat than one that lives both in and outdoors as they choose. Yes, it's potentially dangerous, but freedom is worth the risk. I feel bad for cats locked inside; their whole lives restricted to the tiny world of the apartment/house.
You obviously haven't got a clue, the only true comment is they need lot of combing and they love every moment of it. Further more pets (cats and dog) mirror their human. Ours have been/are the cuddly, lap cats, passive lovable breed we have ever owned.

Rescue is the best breed. Animals require time, money and understanding. All cats should be kept indoors or protected when outside.
Although I know that it was necessary, I felt bad keeping mine indoors for the first 2 weeks of living with me. I couldn't survive without the outdoors and am glad I can let her out now.
@@jenniferh3827 I’ve had very happy indoor cats. I couldn’t stand another family member being hit by a car or mauled by an animal.
Mine is the same
Who care my Brit gives me HeadButs ‘BONK”
I'm getting one
I have a british shorthair it is the best cat. I got a cat from some rando who lived around the block from me, from their house. Adorable loves cuddling always climbing on top of everyone, even my cat allergic dad likes her. I'll miss her when she dies in 7 years. Argentina McCree 2014-2029.
go back to the future you alien
You can’t know when her time will be. One of mine lived to be 14. The other, 23.
Hi how do you cut down on the moult of this breed my kit moults terribly every single day
I have a british shorthair and he's very friendly, cute and doesn't bite or scratch at all. so yeah this defenetly isn't all true
I agree 👍
My british shorthair is amazing...loves coming to me after I call her from any room. Never put british shorthairs in the dust, they just work out better for certain kinds of people.
This video: Don’t buy a backyard breeder!
Also this video: Adopt a back yard breeder!
Mine loves to cuddle, loves being held. Hates his Siamese brother and kids
All my British shorthair wants to do is cuddle. Can we be certain these people know ANYTHING about cats?
My uncle has five cats, the BSH he loves most and i am also impressed of BSH… he is clever and patient, i think some reasons you have mentioned is a common questions to Alll type breeds
I’ve got a cream British short hair, he’s the sweetest cat ever and so well behaved and the most loving little fur ball ever.
I have a British shorthair and I'm planning to get one more
my British Shorthair cuddling my arm while I watch this video would say differently
I will get a British shorthair cat in 9 weeks or 8 weeks , And the person had me showed how he looks like . IT WAS TOO CUTE !
how much does it cost?
Found my BS in the street and he is very indépendant and adorable ! 😻💕💕🥰❤
Recently got a bsh pedigree after loving my friends one, I will say as a kitten they are alot of work just like any other kitten but they rapidly turn into very well behaved cats, if you live in a busy area and dont want a cat to go outside without supervision. I couldn't recommend enough
Mine were very cuddly.
I have 4 BSH cats. This video’s depiction is not describing the breed fairly.
Agreed we have 5 and they're literally angels, we'll behaved and tes l9ve cuddles and my youngest is a total lap cat.
Question, if you tried to introduce one as a kitten to a dog, would it be okay? Slowly of course, not just shoving it into a room with a dog and expect everything to go well
my british shorthair is a little naughty princess and i love her haha
Are u the one who do the romania channel or nah?
Dap, eu sunt :). Insa pe canalul acesta lucrez cu o tipa din america pentru voce ;)
@@FactsaboutCatsVideos aaa! Ce tare!
Adopted a British shorthair 2 days again($15), he's 4 years old after a day he's great, only thing you have right is he doesn't like to get picked up and wants his litter box clean.
I was wondering why my British shorthair doesn't want to cuddle and is always sleeping. Watched this 5 years later.
I have 2 of them, one from a Breeder and the other one is an rescute.
May I ask, how do they get along?
@@sammie7641 Perfect, my 2 boys love each other
Getting one for free from the rescue would've made me felt scammed by the breeder
Mine doesnt like to be hold and sheds a lot. He is also often sick.
It’s horrible…I’ve heard people brag about harming cats, in the US
Meanwhile in Australia you are required to keep them indoors in most areas.
@@newuk26 Very true. Coyotes get a lot of cats, where I’m from.
That and coyotes in the southwest. Bc my God will they eat your cats and small dogs if given the chance. Don't forget falcons & eagles
I have a B.Shorthair, a rescue cat, and a dog...........they all three get on brilliantly and play well together. My B.Shorthair is the youngest and adores her housemates, she doesn't seem to have a favourite family member.
Mine only liked me.
To make the term British shorthair shorter you can use BSH :)
Gray one (British blue), male, exactly like in the video
If you are at poland and looking for adoption one, just comment.
There’s one thing you missed. It’s starts off all cuddly, cute and playful but the British Shorthair will end up with an empire.
I have 3 cats and my British short cat gets along just great with my other cats and I have his sister as well
Ur right actually I miss my friends cat he was so sweet
Most of this video is slander against British shorthairs. My guy is not like that at all.
The British Shorthairs Summit didn't approve this video! ☝🏼
The second you pick mine up. It stares into the emptiness, it is thinking, I'm making a run for it. Wait....wait...for him to losen his grip..... just a little bit....then Shawshank Redemption!
Thank you for this very informative video!
My baby is not very playful. He’s very calm and not too cuddling. I don’t blame him. He still a good company and it’s beautiful and fluffy 😜
I have a lot of respect for you for putting this out to protect cats from unprepared homes. I'm not looking to get this kind of cat any time soon, but I still find this empowering.
Half of those aren't necessarily BSH related, but true for any cat.
In Southeast Asia British shorthairs are still protected and couldn't be found in shelters and streets. Getting a British shorthair means paying thousands to buy or breed it
20 Years??? Hola ! A BIG OL' LIKE and... I LOVE my Valentine, thats HER name 💝💘💞❤💜🫀🖤😻🥰
Oh the same people that disparage black cats. No way. I’ve had lots of British cats and black cats. BTW black cats are very lucky in Britain. ❤🐈⬛❤️🐈⬛❤️
I have a British short hair and she is very cute and very cuddle
Sorry but these informations are all false.
What are, you just a random auto-contradictory troll?
Can u do a vid on tuxedo cats plllzzzz
POV: You have 4 British shorthair cats
Are Brits only sold in the UK?
"Cats don't know what's good for them and the shorthair isn't an exception" that isn't even a reason that just what cats do tf😂
I got one anyone and he is so sweet
I also have a British short hair but my dad’s friend owns a veterinary he dose everything for free my cat went to icu but he did it for free
*me that has a super cuddly and nice british shorthair that likes everyone*
i guess im on the parallel universe of earth 🤭
You have had a bad run. Maybe a couple true points in there. Lol
Didnt know about sago palms. I have one in my house!
Mine only likes to be picked up upside down and held like a baby. Upside down you can walk around with him or even dance. Right side up-NOT! Loves belly rubs
i already bought one 🙂🙂
This is why you shouldn't get cats in general, little to do with British shorthair. No wander it has more dislikes than likes.
Actually, we Brits have better dental hygiene than Americans - now swallow that fact!
Stop sharing disinformation in internet, they are the best cats
Never seen a happier cat than one that lives both in and outdoors as they choose. Yes, it's potentially dangerous, but freedom is worth the risk. I feel bad for cats locked inside; their whole lives restricted to the tiny world of the apartment/house.
This is just standard owning cat stuff
You obviously haven't got a clue, the only true comment is they need lot of combing and they love every moment of it. Further more pets (cats and dog) mirror their human. Ours have been/are the cuddly, lap cats, passive lovable breed we have ever owned.
What a bullshit of a video😂 especially, some of them that apply literally to EVERY cat.
This is a terrible list, my British short hair is the perfect little guy
This isn't true I had a British short they love cuddles and are very friendly
We have a British cat. She is the most well behaved, loved, quite and smart cat. So stop telling lies
aww
