3:47 A laser level is a precision optical device. As a photographer and DIYer, the first thing I would do is put that tripod on the side of the road with a sign “free, brand new”. You’re almost guaranteed to eventually break your level using that flimsy tripod when you accidentally knock into it. There are way safer and better solutions. Sirui and Bogen come to mind. You want want with some mass and/or a hook at the bottom of center post to hand a little weight of some sort. You definitely want a head with a quick release plate.
My tripod is still working, but it's nothing like my Manfrotto video tripod. Thanks for sharing your advice, especially with the center post weight. I'd like to see Milwaukee come out with a premium version.
Bought a green laser Bosch can see at 20’ in sunlight. Can see much better if you have a white paper tape to area to reflect the laser beam. Inside the beam is vivid
Have you found any issues using in the sunlight. I know in the video it shows it working well. But in the manual it mentions sunlight and extreme lighting conditions can affect accuracy. It states to use indoors for best results. Have you noted the accuracy being affected enough to notice
I haven't noticed any issues. I did notice an issue with the M18 Red Interior Laser & Detector when using it inside. My extra garage lights, where I record videos, messed with the laser detector. That one is a different detector than the one in this video.
Hi, I've been watching your reviews, and thank you for a lot of good info. I'm just wondering if it's powerful enough to help me laying concrete slabs outdoors? Like when you move a cross laser around indoors before laying tiles, to make sure you have a harmonic looking pattern before you start. If you put it on the tripod, how far is the vertical lines visible on the ground, in sunny daylight?
Excellent video one of the best demonstrating how the levels work. One question- when you set square layout for the volley ball court is that possible to do with only the cross line plumb point laser level or is the 360 degrees three plane laser level required? Thanks in advance
@@TheRockymountainboy Thanks for your reply, I returned the cross line back to Homedepot for the 3-plane, I used the 3-plane to layout four concrete footing pads level and square and it worked great.
Has anyone use this to set grade or set a house foundation? Trying to decide if I should go with the Bosch rotary or try and stick with my favorite brand 😅
@@MarkThomasBuilder This is good video and I don't mean to say otherwise but I would be curious just to see how far out it would have gone. It may be outside the design and spec'd parameters but it could influence my decision on which one to buy next.
What happened to the laser detectors, do you know? They are out of stock everywhere??? Does Milwaukee not make them anymore? Are they made to order now??? I need one but they have vanished of the face of the earth?
Haha, oh man I'm sure you'll find some uses for it this spring/summer. I tried making an outdoor sand volleyball court last summer without it and it was next to impossible to see the laser lines during the day.
Tripod goes to 72”. Not super useful. They all seem to do this with their tripods. If you’re using it for cabinet installation this is fine, but so much of what I need level is higher than 6”. Head height for a door is 6’8” or more. What about deck ledgers? Stairs. Picture rail and crown moulding. Or using it with a detector to get elevations when grading? I wish an elevator tripod that went to 8’ was more common and available.
@@dipf7705 No not really, if you set the laser at a high point. And what if you don’t have a grade rod? Kidding. A bit of brain fog... Anyway, I have a taller tripod and use it often for interior work and setting deck ledgers. Grading not so useful, you’re right.
that tripod is garbage. Loose as hell and its stability is terrible. You better hope you don't breath in its direction or you will see the lasers wobble
Now that you mention it, I'd say it's best to use this tripod indoors or else only on mild wind days outside. I have a $300 camera tripod which is better suited for windy situations.

I'm not sure, why it's on backorder everywhere. It may be a supply chain issue like I've seen in the past. I recently picked up a Milwaukee tool chest that wasn't in stock for many months and now I see it in all the Home Depot stores.
If you own, or plan to own a Milwaukee Laser, would you use it mostly indoors, outdoors, or both?
Would this be good to shoot grade?
To use for landscaping?
@@chrisrivera4460 following for response. Too big an investment to for it to not work for this 😅
mostly outside. Considering the cost of the laser, purchasing the tripod and detector seems like a natural thing to do.

where has this been all my life?! wow, thanks for this review!
This is such a handy tool accessory. I highly recommend it.
That was exactly the demo I was after. Thanks!!
Glad I could help!
Great instructions and great walk trough!
Thank you!

I brought a plain white envelope outside before to help see the line. The laser detector is a game changer. Saves lots of time.
does the reader give out a digital readout as well?

Does this tool auto level itself?
Yes, the Milwaukee lasers self level if they're within 4° of level.
@@MarkThomasBuilder I’m not the smartest.. is that close to an 1/8th inch
What is the stated accuracy at 100'?
3:00 “When are we going on our walk?” 😂😂😂
Hey Mark whom is the grade stick supplied by that's compatible with detector. Great video, thanks.
You can buy a grade rod from Home Depot. Johnson make a good one. The Milwaukee 165; laser detector will clamp on the side of it.

Thanks, I tried laying out a 30x60 area in the sun and it was near impossible. In my opinion the laser detector is a must for outdoor work.
Hey mark great video thanks. Im wondering of there is any attachment for putting on a form board where a tripod wouldn’t really work?
Can I use the Milwaukee Laser detector (which I want) with a Hilti Laser (that I own)?
Another informative video. Thanks Mark!
You're very welcome!
Excellent video one of the best demonstrating how the levels work. One question- when you set square layout for the volley ball court is that possible to do with only the cross line plumb point laser level or is the 360 degrees three plane laser level required? Thanks in advance
The 3 plane works great on floor surfaces. The other ones are better for things like hanging cabinets on walls, etc.
You would need the 3 plane for that specific application. The cross laser doesn’t have 2 plumb lines that are perpendicular to each other.
@@TheRockymountainboy Thanks for your reply, I returned the cross line back to Homedepot for the 3-plane, I used the 3-plane to layout four concrete footing pads level and square and it worked great.
Great video. Thanks. What is the model number of the white ruler that stand the laser detector?
It's the Bosch Aluminum Level Rod that I had available in my tool collection. You can buy any level rod and it will work just fine.

Thanks heaps! Very educational!
Glad it was helpful!👊
What's the quality like on the tripod I heard it feels cheap? What's your thoughts?
It's not as robust as I hoped for, but it works decent.
Definitely. Thanks for the video. Subscribed
So glad to hear it, thanks for stopping by and subscribing!👊. I"m going to make a RUclips Shorts video soon showing if this works on a Bosch laser.

I used it for foundation and it was spot on..
@@isaaclopez1453 for checking finished foundation level? Or actually shooting a lot to set the depth of a house?
Is the detector a red usb rechargeable?
It uses 2 AA batteries.
How did you get the 90 Degree angle ?
If you have the 3 plane laser, you can get the 90° angle with this laser detector.
@@MarkThomasBuilder Thank you !
@@MarkThomasBuilder I have a 3622-20
Hi there, where did you get the measuring rod for the detector?
You can buy them at Home Depot. I think this one came with my Bosch laser kit.
The detector is rated at 165' and you tested at 165', how about testing to see how far it can effectively operate?
I think I took it out to 200' and it worked okay, but decided to just show it working to what it's rated for.
@@MarkThomasBuilder This is good video and I don't mean to say otherwise but I would be curious just to see how far out it would have gone. It may be outside the design and spec'd parameters but it could influence my decision on which one to buy next.
When the laser settled to level you could have simply locked it off in the windy conditions.
Does it self-level?
The lasers themselves self level but the detector is designed to be held on a ruler stick that's relatively straight, using your best judgement.
how can I get one now without one year lead time.
That's a good question. I would think these would be readily available by now.
thank you
You bet!
Cant you just lock the laser line if the wind is blowing?
If you lock the laser, it won't self level, which could be a problem if something shifted.
I’m going to Home Depot tomorrow now
If they don't have this in stock, you can normally get it shipped within a day or 2.

Milwaukee will be launching some new tool in June. I'm not sure if there's a gen 2 coming out then? I will be at the event, sharing all the news.
Wish they made a packout edition
I'm with you on that. The cases have a nice foam divider inside.
Hw do you like the tripod and will it fit into a Milwaukee packout box?
Nope, the tripod is quite a bit longer than the packouts. You would have to bungee it to the side.
@@MarkThomasBuilder thanks for the input

When you have a 16' grade rod you dont need a 10 foot tall tripod do you
