You've got the truck of your dreams with the Toyota Tundra 4x4! Now how do you engage the part time four-wheel drive system when needed?
The Toyota Tundra will help you in all situations. Especially sticky, off-road terrains that require more than just the rear two wheels.
4H - four-wheel drive high can be engaged while moving at speeds below 62 MPH. Simply turn the electronic selector switch clockwise from 2H until you hear a click at 4H. The "4Hi" light will flash then turn solid when engaged.
4L - four-wheel drive low can only be engaged when the vehicle is stopped. When stopped, place the vehicle in Neutral (N), then push in and turn clockwise the selector knob to 4L. "4Lo" and VSC off will light up on the dash. Vehicle stability control is unavailable in 4WD low.
2H - the majority of drive time will be in two-wheel high. To re-engage 2H, come to a complete stop from 4L, and put the vehicle in neutral (N). Then turn the selector switch to 4H, then to 2H.
When the vehicle is moving and in 4H, it is not necessary to reduce speed or come to a complete stop, unless the indicator light is blinking. At that point the system is not fully engaged and may require an increase or decrease of speed.
The Toyota Tundra is ready and willing for all types of terrains. On-road, off-road...you're covered. Comment below, call, or text 334-718-0504 for more information.

Very nice. I completely forgot you have to stop and put in neutral before going into 4L. Thanks so much!
Happy 4-wheeling!
@@JSS Thank you good sir. I got stuck trying to go up a gravel driveway during a rainstorm and couldn't get it into 4 Low. 4 High got me out of the jam but I was thinking something was wrong with 4 L. Thankfully I found your video before taking it in for service. I guess I could have read the owners manual too, but really, who does that, ha!
@@rickdff62 There's always more fun to be had than read an owner's manual haha.
Thanks Jonathan, I just bought a 2011 and haven't figured out all the controls yet.
Awesome! Congratulations!
The Beatles "Help" on the radio...ha ha! Thanks for a very helpful video.
Helpful video! Thank you!
Are there any recommended break in procedures for 4WD? In the 2021 owner's manual, we see on pg 186 general driving instructions and a condition for when you can start towing... but nothing about front or rear axle break ins.
So 4L is to crawl out of a spot nice and slow about 3mph and 4H is for normal winter driving for speeds up to 60mph? Don't drive trucks all the time. But just got a 2014 Tundra. And I'd hate to blow the differential out like I did before in my old F250.
WaNNa MaKe LiBs cRy That’s correct. The 4L is for tough spots and low speeds.
Right on brother great video thank you for the answer I will never go over 60 mile an hour even when the freeways are filled with snow I just want to make sure I could shift into four wheel high while I am moving and you answered it thank you so much. Love the tundra. Colorado
When I have questions about my new car are my new truck I immediately Drive or call the dealership I definitely don't depend on the internet. Way too much misinformation
Shot simply and smart information than you sir
Darlington Nkwopara glad it helps! Thank you!
Johnathan, when I try to switch back from 4lo to 4hi, my 4hi never really goes solid and in the past I’ve heard gears grind, do you know what the issue could be?
I would contact a mechanic. There’s something going on with it with the light not going solid.
Is 4WD low is better for heavy snow or 4WD Hi is good, Please suggest
I’ve never driven in snow. However most heavy snow at low speeds you can use 4L. In most high traction areas like snow on the road or hard packed sand you would use 4H at higher speeds.
Justin, can you switch from 2WD to 4H stopped in N?
Adam Marshall absolutely you can. You also have the flexibility of switching on the fly as conditions change.
Jonathan Sewell thank you kindly
Can you shift into REVERSE from either of the 4WD modes, or do you have to disengage 4WD prior to shifting to reverse?
Jar Harr yes you can drive in reverse in both 4WD modes.
How fast can you drive in 4H?
Does Toyota Tundra offer automatic 4wd/awd on the 2022? What about previous years?
Hay Jonathan, do you have a video on how and when to use the button with the picture that looks like its doing a burn out? Silly question I'm sure.. Thank you sir
Short and sweet
When 4L is engaged, how fast should one be driving?
RiverRuns NC 4L should only be used in crawling speeds, maybe 2-3 MPH. If you need to go faster you can use 4H.
Gotcha
What if you change it while driving? I've done that :(
Mike Ramos 4 High is designed to be shifted on the fly up to max speed. 4 Low normally won’t engage while driving (for safety and damage prevention).
@@JSS do you know if this is the case for earlier models like second gen 11s as well?
If I needed to engage 4WD LOW as soon as I start driving, would I need to wait for 4WD HIGH indicator to be solid before engaging 4WD LOW?
Andy M no you can turn the dial right to 4WD Low, just wait until it lights up solid (engages) until you put it in drive and take off.
Thank you for the advice 👍
That was clear bro, thanks!
Foust G your welcome! Thanks for watching!
Jonathan Sewell I’ve heard there is a guideline for shifting in colder weather and mph. What is it?
Thank you Jonathan
You’re welcome!
@@JSS had terrible weather here in ft worth tx and never used my 4wd before. You were a blessing.
@@albiecraig9359 glad I could help, stay safe!
Do you have to drive reverse when engaging 4L and putting back to 2WD? Help please
Not unless it won’t shift out of 4L. But should be fine if you are shifting in Neutral.
is it ok if I am in 4h or 4l and turn off the engine?
Ayoub Alhaabsi yes it is okay, but I would recommend at least returning to 4H before turning it off. The best situation would be to return to 2WD. That way you don’t forget what is locked in.
Thank you!!
I've got a 2007 tundra. Do they all have the 4-wheel drive switch?
Yes, all of the 4WD equipped trucks do
If you own the truck wouldn't you know? If unsure on anything when I purchase a new car or truck I either drive or call the dealership in which I spent my hard-earned money. Normally I research before I spend, that's just me.
If you are driving in snow should you have it at 4h? Or just 2wd and use 4h when you need it?
Angel Gonzalez Depends on how deep the snow and how fresh it is. I would probably drive in 4H for the most time.
I live in mn, i used 2wd all the time through deep snow, its all about your tires and going slow so you wont slip your tires but also keep your momentum up also
Thank you
Why didn’t Toyota add AWD like most other trucks?
They just didn’t have the hardware in place to do it. I’m not sure if the 2022 has it or not.
Do i need go to neutral to use the 4H?
No, you can stay in DRIVE and shift to 4H up to 55-63 MPH. 4L does require a full stop and shift to N
Thanks Mr Jonathan
you would stall if you shift into 4low in gear.
@@JSS Do you shift to Nuetral and turn switch to 4L then shift back to drive?
So it only goes in neutral when going to 4l?
Yes, neutral is required when shifting to 4L
After engaging 4H do I have to keep driving under 62 mph?
Or can I go 65-70mph?
Technically you can go that speed. However, I would recommend staying under 62 mph.
How much is it
Simple and thank you
Good lesson. Thank you.
What the MPG difference between 2WD and 4H?
Most of the time it’s rated 1 MPH different.
It is normal to feel a kick and some noise when shifting into a 4L?
DJ12Ema yes, sometimes there a kick or lunge when 4L is engaged. That’s just the mechanics of the front differential.
@@JSS thank you sir!
@@JSS is it normal while in 4Hi trying to reverse into my drive way it struggles a bit. Just not a smooth reverse.
However it does not have 4WD….like Dodge Ram where you find 4x2, 4WD, 4HD and 4LD. is this an option for Tundra? Thank you.
You have to decide between Dependability, Resale value= Toyota or additional features. Ford, Chevy, Dodge. Not have the more important Gaines.
Look at the price of a 3-year-old Toyota Tundra in comparison to a 3-year-old Ford F-150. The differences are shocking.
Toyotas hold their value more than any other vehicle. Unless you're going to invest on a collector's item.
How fast can you drive in 4h and how long?
Good question!
Did you watch the video? He blatantly tells you how fast you can go in 4H. You use it as long as it is needed in loose terrain. Gravel, snow ect.
Thanks for the video and information. This is useful for first time 4x4 Tundra owner like myself.
Can I ask you some questions please:
- What will happen if I try to switch to 4HI while at speed higher than 62mph? Will it damage something?
- i did not know until i read yesterday that we are not supposed to use the 4HI or 4LO on non-slippery pavement. Unfortunately, i already did and experienced some locking and the wheels skidding while making a slow turn to park and again to backout of the parking slot. Did I damage anything in my 2018 Tundra?
Please advise. Thank you in advance!
kuljo the system is more advanced than us usually. If you accidentally engage 4H at faster speeds, the system will never engage. It may beep at you, but will not lock, so no damage.
Drivetrain binding occurs when 4WD is engaged on nonslip surfaces because of different wheel arcs in the front wheels. Damage will only occur if used on those surfaces for long periods of time. You should be good! Thanks for watching! Please subscribe for more.
Jonathan Sewell Thank you for replying and for the information. Appreciate it!
@@JSS I heard that you need to use your 4 wheel drive system at least a little but a few times a year otherwise could end up having issues. So if I need to use it a few times a year but live in an area where it rarely snows. How can I test the 4 wheel drive system on dry pavement without damaging it.
@Nflguy4949 engage it where you know it's mostly straight with not many turns.
How fast can you drive in 4low
2 or 3 mph.
Can you go from 4wd HI to 2wd while driving?
Yes you can switch between those while driving up to 53 MPH
@@JSS Thank you
Also what happens if you forget the truck on 4hi? I know it's difficult and dangerous to make turns but can you screw up anything?
The truck you are showing is not a 2005 Toyota tundra
Tundra comes with 4x4 system NOT AWD. There is difference between 4x4, AWD and 4 wheel drive. And since you work for Toyota you can look it up in Toyota University. Great video...
It’s been several years since I made this video, but I don’t recall talk of AWD. It is a part time 4x4 system. If I did mention in error, I’m sorry.
My wife just got done driving this truck cause it’s on E
😂😂😂
Nice socks
TheKillzone1511 Thanks!
If you pay $80k for two rails And a bed and cannot figure out a shifter, you have bigger problems then I thought.
You'd be surprised. Notice other individuals decision making.
If you paid 80k or think that’s an acceptable price for a truck you have and even bigger problem.
@@harrisonseny3915 So vote demma-rat again and get an additional 30% inflation.
You supposed to drive it not just to move the switch!
