He’s talking about Cortés’ destruction of the Aztec empire in the 16th century. Thanks for the reaction! Neil Young has made some of the best music since the 60s, multiple genres, a legend.
It still gives me goose-bumps after all these years.
It needs saying: Neil Young is a guitar god. He has influenced countless players. Unlike most guitar gods, with Neil its never been about speed but more his absolute mastery & control. A song like this really highlights his genius and ability to communicate complex emotions.
His guitar playing is understated ,beautiful and mad all in one go 🙂
People do forget about his playing. I love his electric tone from this era. Cortez is one of my favorites.
You are spot on. One soul grabbing emotionally charged played at the right time says more than a hundred musically empty shredded notes
My Dad listened to Neil Young so I was raised listening to Crazy Horse. I was also raised listening to Pink Floyd, The Doors, Aerosmith, The Steve Miller Band, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, and The Beatles just to name a few. My parents had excellent taste in music ❤
One of the greatest of Neil's slow-burning jams, this song was banned in Spain when it was released, as the Spanish government didn't like the (accurate) portrayal of Cortez as a murderer. Great choice, and great reaction!
Nope
Cortez The Killer Top 10 song of ALL Time yep.
Neil Young is The MAN. He is massively underrated as a guitar player, and this song is proof of that. "Cortez The Killer" is the story of Hernando Cortez, a Spanish Conquistador who went to Mexico to find gold, and wound up destroying the Aztec culture, Montezuma was their king. Seen The MAN four times in concert, and each show was a completely different event in presentation and set list. The best way to catch up on Neil is to watch his concert film "Rust Never Sleeps" recorded in 1978, and directed by Neil, under the name Bernard Shakey. A masterpiece.
Neil Young and Crazy Horse were on another level. So much low end, and Neil's dirty and dissonant guitar, I loved this band and this song. Saw them live in 96, rib-crushingly heavy and beautiful at the same time.
It's near perfect. I've heard it 10,000 times and it always amazes me, stoned or straight.
And that's a fact jack !............spot on !
Yep
Beautiful guitar work
👍
Oh my God! Neil Young is a legend among legends. Famous musicians even current day love and follow the Godfather of Grunge! He has no style and every style one could imagine or not with one unforgettable tune after another that everyone of my era and the. Ext and the next are familiar with many of Neil’s songs.Try reacting to these great ones; Southern Man, Old Man, Like a Hurricane, Comes a Time,Cinnamon Girl, and Don’t Let It Bring You Down!
I was smoking my first doobie listening to Neil Young “After the Gold Rush” for the first time! What a beautiful time!
Neil Young's guitar playing is so underrated, and his lyrics are genius. This song flows like a river. You should give LIKE A HURRICANE a
listen, it's amazing too.
Killer Song Neil Young has been a Legend for decades his catalogue is filled with acoustic beauty and electric awesomeness
I can say without hesitation this was listened to heavily when it came out.
Many thanks for this reaction!! I have been a Neil Young fan for many years, but this is my favorite song by Neil!! Neil has a large catalog.
Need Everybody Knows This Nowhere album
I Was Born To Rock I'll Never Be An Opera Star
must hear the same live with crazy horse at toronto incredible
Great song. I prefer studio versions 98% of the time, but you must hear the Live Version of this from the "Live Rust" album. Make sure you find the full length version.
He and Crazy Horse also do a killer version on 'Weld', from Neil's early 90s tour.
Nope Live version much better 90% of the time...
@dbradx not as good as whole Ragged Glory
@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN So, you're comparing a single live version of a song to a whole album?? Okay.....
pay no attention to denveroutdoorman he's NOT a true Neil Young fan.
Surfer Joe and moe the sleaze. ROCKS.
been watching these videos after work the last week homie. been a fun ride my dude
I appreciate it @thecowabungadude5184 means a lot you watching the videos. Glad you on this journey with me
Tip of the iceberg brother
Such a gorgeous song! So wonderful to see someone really appreciate Neil and his glory!
I'm a big fan of young and this is by far the best song Been listening to him for 40 years. And never really heard this song Till about 6 months ago.
I always get a kick out of those purists who say Neil is "sloppy " in his guitar work................well I LIKE SLOPPY>thank you very much. :)
Heaven yes!!!
Im glad you made this a single solo reaction. Amazing song!
Other great songs by him that i love:
Down by the river
Harvest moon
Wonderful that you would hit and dig this amazing tune.
As to one approach on how to get a laid back feel like this, the drummer and guitarist are on angel dust and the bassist and Neil are fucked on tequila and weed. Loose…. Glorious
Neil is the guitarist.
I meant Frank Sampedro the rhythm guitarist…..obviously
Glorious 👍
Neil's Gibson Les Paul AKA Old Black was originally a gold top but over painted black before aquied it.He added fire bird pick ups and the infamous Bigsby tremilo bar
Neil and old black are as one in my mind😅😅
This and Powderfinger, Like a Hurricane ❤❤❤❤ brilliant
Down By The River better either live or album versions
Cortez what a killer …❤
yo la escuhé a principios de los 90¨s....es Preciosa
Beautiful song, one of my favourites, but wildly inaccurate lyrics as far as the Aztecs are concerned. Poetic licence to the max.
The Egyptians / what a dope
Astonishing that you asked, "the Egyptians?" when Cortez and Montezuma had been duly already mentioned. You musical sensibility is spot on. Well done on that point.
"Pocahontus" is another gem by Neil Young
Nope stop the wimpy crap...Down By The River or Cinnamon Girl or Southern Man or Cowgirl in The Sand .....Stop the wimpy acoustic Neil
Also need Down By The River which is much better
Sample and Hold .. ROCKS.
What????
Down By The River acoustic guitar version ROCKS.
Kinda weird of that one commenter to say that a song about genocide and exploitation makes them feel peaceful and worry free lol. They must not pay any attention to the lyrics
That's a pretty long song and a lot of words for Neil to say what's really on his mind...that she's gone and he still hasn't grasped how it happened. The whole Zuma album is themed this way.
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere way better album or Ragged Glory which aren't played on garbage Rock top 40 stations
Please listen to Nell Carter. She is awesome.
I don't know if you read the comment on RUclips but just incase you do check out the live version central Park NY by the Davie Matthew's band cover of Cortez the killer it's insanely good.
FUCK NO....4 way Street Live version of Southern Man and Carry On...beat this and. Davey the Wimp
FUCK yeah, Only Love Can Break Your Heart. ROCKS.
Egyptian no, Aztec. 😊
Great song and reaction! Check out Dave Matthews and Warren Haynes cover in NY… it’s awesome!
No they ruined it...STOP THE WIMP
Stop the wimp denveroutdoorman he's NOT a true Neil Young fan.
1975 song come out
Neil Young never talked about how many people the Aztecs sacrificed over the years war was never known complete and utter bullshit they went into the forest and took people as slaves and used them in their sacrifice to say the Aztecs act like war was never known and they were peaceful it’s just utter foolishness the song might be good but the information is bullshit.
Egyptians!...in south America? WTF! 🤦🇬🇧
Neil is God!
No I'm God
"Powderfinger" about the U.S. civil war.
Nope
