Neil Young does heavy, slow and methodical progressions better than all others. so much intensity in such a relatively mellow song. I love Neil. Keep up the good work Ruben, love the videos.
Oh my god I loved this song so much! I never heard it before so thank you, thank you, thank you Mr Buijs for sharing this with us -it's just beautiful, melancholic, epic yumminess!!!!😍 I love all kinds of music, which is why I always love your channel, but his guitar tone might be my favorite of anyones I think -wow, just soothes my soul heehee 🤗
There was supposed to be one more verse but during this recording the power went out in the studio. When the engineer suggested another take when the power was restored Neil said he liked the feel of the that take and said to keep it.
He's done so many great songs... I was having lunch in a favorite little cafe in Woodside, Calif., just a few miles above Stanford University and shared a table with Neil. Real nice guy.
Agreed! Down by the River is a must! My favorites are Heart of Gold, Old Man, and Down by the River. Oh, Ruben if you listen to any live versions of his in the future, Live at the BBC 1971 versions are just about the best live recordings Ive ever heard from early 70s music. I would check those out if you do more Neil Young in the future!
I was just out driving with my son and this song came on, you can see from my channel that I'm no stranger to classic rock, but, for some reason, this song was unknown to me until about an hour ago. My reaction was about the same as what you described in your comments, it is a very mellow intensity. Also of note, is that as soon as we got home, I pulled up this song on RUclips and added it to Favorites and 1970's playlists.
So glad your patron suggested this to you Ruben. I love, LOve, LOVE Neil Young! Living legend! You should DEFINITELY listen to more of his work over such a long period of time. I was supposed to see him in concert a few years ago but it was cancelled - sucked big time! You aren't wrong about "Keep on rockin' in the free world" of course. Possibly my favorite song by Neil Young and Crazy Horse is 'Down by the River' - hope you do a reaction video to that song. Cheers.
He came dancing across the water With his galleons and guns Looking for the new world In that palace in the sun. On the shore lay Montezuma With his coca leaves and pearls In his halls he often wondered With the secrets of the worlds. And his subjects Gathered 'round him Like the leaves around a tree In their clothes of many colors For the angry gods to see. And the women all were beautiful And the men stood Straight and strong They offered life in sacrifice So that others could go on. Hate was just a legend And war was never known The people worked together And they lifted many stones. They carried them To the flatlands And they died along the way But they built up With their bare hands What we still can't do today. And I know she's living there And she loves me to this day I still can't remember when Or how I lost my way. He came dancing across the water Cortez, Cortez What a killer.
No you are quite correct... Rocking in the Free World was his. As Pearl Jam and so many of the Seattle bands said, he was the Godfather of Grunge. As well as being a wonderful acoustic player. So glad something else has opened up for you and this was a great reaction video. Keep on keeping on
Neil Young brings me back to the time I went to the same old oldest pub in my home city. I came there 4 evenings a week. The tender was a big fan of him. Also heard lots of Pink Floyd at the time. When I drank enough beer I always went to a metal café to get some heavier stuff. Nice time. I appreciate this music because it brings me back to those wonderfull times.
Funny facts , this version was recorded in Neil’s guest house living room . Also if you think it’s long actually a chunk of it is missing due to a production mishap
Really cool to see you checking out Neil Young! I've only started listening to his (and other singer/songwriters') music roughly two years ago after mostly listening to rock and metal and fell in love with it. Always pays off to broaden your horizon. :) I'd be really interested to see your reaction to Songs: Ohia - The Black Crow. It's by a singer/songwriter called Jason Molina who unfortunately passed away a few years ago when he was only 39 due to alcohol abuse. He made some heartbreaking music and I think The Black Crow is one of his most powerful.
He puts his Hart so much in to his music. IV Larson. To him for years to day is Jan 8 it's my birthday I'm am 60 so I 💘 him for the 🎶lesson to harvest moon. You will love it
Neil has one of the most harmonically rich guitar tones ever with that combination of a microphonic P90 into his overpowered Tweed Deluxe. Like a fuzz, but clearer and richer.
Most are lucky to get one Cortez the Killer, but Neil has two more in Cowgirl in the Sand and Down by the River. They all reach that point after 16 minutes.
Check out Ragged Glory, an aptly titled album with Crazy Horse from the early 90s. Neil at his heavy best. Over and Over, Love to Burn, F*!#in' Up, Love and only Love. Love his early stuff, but this is the album I still play.
Just subscribed to your channel due to your honest and heartfelt reaction to this masterpiece. Was lucky enough to hear Neil in concert in his prime and it was truly a life lasting memory.
His songs are all beautiful and his guitar playing awesome. Try hey hey my my , cinnamon girl, powderfinger, old man, down by the river, needle and the damage done, and hurricane. There's plenty more, too
A really powerful song. Exactly what I was thinking before you said it. I recommend any of his live stuff. ("Live Rust", "Rust Never Sleeps"), and especially: "Old Man" LIVE/acoustic. Glad you like it Ruben.
@Doug Sawyer, Neil did it all. The acoustic version is great. It shows that he doesn't need all the bells and whistles. He's a higher echelon artist that can hold you without all that. Yes his metal is great but his acoustic shows you the other side of this multi-faceted artist!
apparently there was a final verse , but half way through there was a power cut and Neil didnt like the last verse anyway so he chose to fade it out where it ends
Wow, u rly just meet the old song from Young :) I´m very happy u finally fill this big whole in knowledgement. Keep Going, really enjoy ur videos (well..the intro maybe is too loud, but ok ;))
This is 70's rock, most of it is long intros, if you knew your music you would know its instruemtal, and would be waiting for the song, sad how so many muzos dont know music, and this is clasic neil young, how have you never heard this if you like music, or do you just like nirvana and metalica hahaha. Also he is singing about the invasion of south america by the spaniards and porteugease.
@Doug Sawyer check out the one at MSG 2018 not the Central Park performance. I think that you'll appreciate Warren Haynes a little better. I never thought that anybody but Neil could pull the emotion out of that Les Paul but that MSG performance..... he and the DMB were firing on all cylinders.
I'm a lifelong Neil fan and it was great seeing you "get it" like that. Very cool. I love Neil's electric music, but his acoustic playing is even more amazing. Check out this version of Cortez sometime if you: 1) have a beer and 2) you want to go back to that place Acoustic Cortez the Killer from 2003 ruclips.net/video/29eltVuft0w/видео.html
Nicely done again Ruben. "Like A Hurricane" from 1991 Neil Young & Crazy Horses's live "Weld" is a great suggestion. ruclips.net/video/RETza7YHTzk/видео.html
Ahh I'm glad that this video is still up. Somehow I thought that it had been taken down. One of my favorite Neil Young & Crazy Horse live tracks is Love to Burn, but it has to be the version on Weld, as I've come across one or two other live versions online and surprisingly was less enthused with them. I might yet request Love to Burn as a Patron request.
@@paulsiebeneicher4536 There was so much to love on "Weld." For me, anyways. :) Alas, I remember loaning that 2 disc CD to a friend one time & never getting it back. :/ At least there's there's Spotify & RUclips here to mollify me. ;)
Neil Young can say more with ten words than most songwriters can say in an entire album. A master of imagery.
Neil Young does heavy, slow and methodical progressions better than all others. so much intensity in such a relatively mellow song. I love Neil. Keep up the good work Ruben, love the videos.
Neil is an incredible performer and song writer. He is definitely a beloved Canadian treasure and a gift to the world.
The 60's and 70's is when musicians wrote great lyrics to great songs with meaning. Been lucky to see him in concert many times.
The live version from Live Rust is the definitive version of this song.
Masterpiece.

Mer him occasionally in the Santa Cruz/Boulder Creek area, just being and doing hippy stuff 👍
Neil's a true original. Legendary. Thanks
Great song love the brief but thoughtful lyrics
I have to second the motion for 'Down by the river', and also Powderfinger, Cinnamon Girl and Mr. Soul. Great review !
