- Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 - April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described by music critic Scott Yanow as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century."
Nicknamed "Sassy", "The Divine One" and "Sailor" (for her salty speech), Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner. The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its "highest honor in jazz", the NEA Jazz Masters Award, in 1989.
This is a snippet of her performance at the North Sea Jazz Festiva, the Hague, The Netherlands, on July 12, 1981.

THE ETERNAL, THE UNDISPUTED
THE AUTHENTIC PERFORMER WHO BUILD AND SHAPE THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES !!!
THE MAGNIFICENT SARAH VAUGHAN !!!
This is a tough tune. Hard work. Sarah grabs it by the throat and kicks it down the hall. I love this rendition seriously.
Amazing that those words were penned by Strayhorn when he was just sixteen years old. And yes, Sarah gives it the genius touch in a way that few can. It's hard to shake the memory of that last, lonely, unforgettable note....
Stray horn is way over the top. What a gift to us all.
what a lovely woman
Two incomparable geniuses: Sarah & Billy. The "word-smithing" in his lyric is stunning: "relaxes on the axis".....and Billy at all of 16, a love sick, black homosexual, burning with talent. And Sarah doesn't just "sing" Billy's song: she inhabits his mind, his feelings, his
despair. Was there ever such a delivery!
This channel deserves more fame!! Great video, like ever!!
Maravilhosa!!!!
It still blows my mind that this song was written by a sixteen year old
Maior de todas
As Carmen sang of Sassy's voice: she could do more with a melody than a hip whipporwill. Here, we are treated to the embodiment of those words.
How poignant! How Lovely!
👏💞🎶
Sarah was beyond category, to use Ellington’s phrase.
Not Ellington...my uncles'... Billy Strayhorn
This was on of Francis Bacon's favourite songs for obvious reasons...
must say this is not the best of the renditions of the song, especially the odd drumming !!
