With Damon, he always instilled in his mind that he'd only ever be capable of inflicting pain, death, and destruction/havoc on others; that he'd only ever be seen as an evil, heartless monster. He believed he'd never change. But Elena helped him see that he was capable of good. She found the beauties in him. Even though he couldn't see them. She brought out his vulnerability, his gentleness, his kindness. Her inspiration helped him develop (though gradual) more care towards others (Liz, Ric, and Bonnie especially. And even Jeremy, Matt and Caroline too more so in the later seasons.) She was his rock. And it was her heart alone and her unconditional, eternal love for him that made him feel human. Alive again. It reminded him that he'd always love and need Stefan, healing their relationship. And above all, it warmed his cold, lonely, selfish heart. She showed him how to love again. And with Elena, she always felt like she had to be this type of person. You know..well behaved, strong in their morals, a people pleaser; someone who liked having the approval from others. Someone who was supposed to have all the answers, who knew exactly what they wanted, and where they wanted to go in life; pretty much predictable. Damon brought out her liberation, her wildness, her desire to not always have it all figured out and just revel a little and be in the moment. And as Stefan put it in season 6, he also helped her embrace the darker sides of herself. But "darkness" isn't always like Damon's kind of darkness. Sometimes darkness is just aka the less pretty or likable sides of us; our imperfections. And when I think of Elena when she became a vampire, that's the way I looked at it. Damon gave Elena the confidence in accepting her darkness as well as showing her that it was ok to be *a little* impulsive and reckless. Damon gave her exactly what she wanted out of life: passion, adventure, a little danger..but also marriage and a family. Delena definitely carried a bit of toxicity and was a messy and complicated relationship (also stated in the show), but what made them real was that they never gave up on each other. Nor could they ever stay apart from each other forever. Somehow, some way, they always found their way back to each other. They were true love. ❤
Elena is Damon's sweet sanity, and Damon is her enticing insanity. Damon: "I'm fine with her either way brother." That right there proves Damon's pure love for Elena, his love is stronger than Stephan's because he loves her no matter who she becomes. True love.
