  • Is the RAM 1500 V6 3.6L Pentastar a good engine? I review this V6 RAM engine as a Heavy Duty Mechanic and give you my opinion on if I think this engine is a good engine. I also speak about the benefits of the RAM 1500 E-Torque system on these new 3.6L Pentastar engines.
I Hope everyone is having a good Monday! I figured it was long over due that I took a good in-depth look at the v6 engine option for the RAM 1500 pick up trucks. The v6 is the base model for these trucks and RAM does sell a ton of these engines.
my my old RAM 1500 I had the 5.7L Hemi which was an awesome power plant but with the price of fuel being so high these days it would make sense for more people to be considering the more fuel efficient V6 3.6L pentastar option for these ram 1500 trucks.
Right off the bat the 3.6L pentastar v6 engine has tons of real world experience. It is extremely reliable engine. it came out in 2011 and has been around ever since. it has been the best selling engine for RAM for 6 years in a row. chryslers has made over 10,000,000 units and this engine has won many awards.
this engine was more efficient, more powerful and smaller then the previous v6 generation from chrysler. in fact the 3.6 pentastar had over 38% more horsepower then the previous generation of engine.
this pentastar has 305 horsepower and can tow up to 7,600lbs which is not bad for a base model v6.
but there are issues as well.
    1. head failures.
    - the driver side head would fail because of the valve seats getting too hot causing detonation. this issues was mainly from 2011 - 2013 but there are rumours that this is still an issue.
    2. rocker arm failures
    - rocker arm bearings were an issue and failing in the earlier model pentastar engines. from years 2011-2014 these were an issues. ram updated the bearings and the issues does seem to be resolved.
    3. coolant system issues
    - lastly there are issues with the coolant system mainly because of the sand casted heads leaving sand in the cooling system. this can clog the radiator and other cooling components.
In conclusion guys I think this engine is very reliable and will serve you well. but in terms of the application of a pick up truck it does have its place but I would much rather have the larger 5.7 hemi as the over fuel economy difference is not that dramatic whereas the power loss is pretty substantial.
I hope you guys liked the video!

I have owned 3 vehicles with the 5.7 and 3 with the 3.6. I'm just going to start by saying that I've never gotten good gas mileage on a hemi engine, partly because it's inefficient and partly because smashing the pedal on a hemi makes everyone happy. I grenaded one 5.7 and had problems with the other 2 with the cylinder deactivation. I own a 2022 ram 1500 with the 3.6 etorque and besides a problem with the battery having "physical damage" when I first got the truck it has been great. I drive it slow, get good gas mileage, tows my 7x12 trailer perfectly and it is a great work truck. I plan to own the truck for at least 6 years so I mainly bought the v6 for reliability.

Note difference of "smashing the pedal on a hemi makes everyone happy" then the "drive it slow, get good gas mileage" which shows everyone that it's not the engine in this case, but the driver.

I love love love my 3.6 2014 Challenger! 148k with a radiator fan replacement and a blend door actuator...really? All it has been is filters, fluids and fun. Put a Pedal Commander on it and hit the gas in the turns. I like how it develops power also, It almost has a Euro feel to it. I may add a Borla exhaust just to give it that nice sound.

  • @JayNoQuarterReagan

I honestly as a truck owner don’t buy a truck for fuel efficiency. I’d rather have the towing capacity and that famous V8 exhaust sound. More power to those that want a V6 however, if you want a V6 go to Jeep for. Grand Cherokee or Wrangler. Especially you heard him if you want the crew cab you get less towing. 6300 is almost useless imo.
The cons make it not worth it either. It’s been said the new I6 Hurricane engines come with turbos. Picture this, turbos go out all the towing power goes out.

Good video. Had/have 2 pentastar engines (13-van and 19-1500) I bought for intended use. Mostly city, weekend cottage runs and some trailer work (pulling motorbikes). Both engines were solid and I didn’t really notice any lack of power for what I was doing with them. Tried my friends Hemi, was a gas to step on the pedal and have her snap too but I don’t normally do that with my Ram. All I want was the engine to be reliable, put the key in and go and do what I need it to do (haul kids and kit) safe and sound. Now the bikes on the other hand.. that’s for the fun factor!

The rocker arm problems are normally caused by the hydraulic valve lash adjuster getting plugged up. Good way to keep this problem from occurring is to add 1 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil per quart the oil change interval. Or, you could just about a week before you're going to get your oil changed at about a half a quart sometimes a full court, cuz it's going to be a little low, of Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil and run it for about a week before you get your oil change that will keep the inside of the engine really clean. And just for Giggles, a bottle of ATF will do the same thing. Automatic transmission fluid will also help the seals stay nice and resilient.

I have a 3.6 Pentastar in my 2016 Chrysler 200. Had it since new. Not a lick of trouble. It is a good strong and reliable engine. As far as a full sized pick-up is concerned, I think for people who mostly use a pick-up truck like a station wagon, such as homeowners hauling something occasionally, it would be fine. If you need a truck to haul heavy loads a lot, it isn't the best choice.

Exactly, truck duty is defined by it's case use. i.e. 1500/2500/3500 Which is why many cases the heavier duty trucks overall tend to be resold overall, which proof can be seen on the market.

I used to have a Pentastar in my old '16 Wrangler JKU, with 3.21 rear axle and a manual, and it was absolutely anemic - you really had to rev it out to get any kind of useful torque out of it. HEMI trucks (even a Power Wagon which I briefly drove) feel like muscle cars by comparison. I am sure it would've been a lot better coupled to an 8-speed ZF and lower rear-axle gears, but can't imagine having a 3.6L in a full-sized truck.

I have owned 3 ram 1500's and I disagree that it is a good engine. I've been a big fan of this powerplant. You don't own three of them if you are not. In all 3 of my trucks, I have had to replace the engine. No, this engine won't last 200,000-300,000. A few may make it. My first one made it 190,000 miles then blew a head gasket. I decided to not only replace the gasket, but to replace both. Upon return, the truck had a very bad oil leak that ended up being a cracked block. The second one failed at about 160,000 and now, my 2019 Ram Rebel with 79,000 miles blew a head gasket. I have opted to just replace it with a new factory engine. The cost for this new engine is nearly $10,000. You covered most of the problems with this motor but failed to mention the oil cooler failures. This will happen to all of them. The oil cooler is located in the V of the block and its made of plastic. The heat cycles simply dry it out and you either start leaking oil or antifreeze or both and you can literally run out of oil before you know it.
These engines run too hot. Most motors will be in the 190-210 degree range, but these will regularly get to 230. The rocker rollers fail with regularity on the Gen 1 and 2 models and eventually eat up the cams if you don't get it fixed quickly. I thought ram had finally engineered out all of the problems with the gen 3 version, but its been the worst. How in the world did this engine become a five time winner of Wards 10 best engines is beyond me. I can see it winning once, but do these folks at Wards not look at the dependability of them before they award it again and again. My advice is to avoid this engine unless you trade every 60,000 miles. I know I will be.

Tundra was changing models and it wasn’t released yet. So I bought what I like Dodge/Ram! Was planning on getting 2 more years out of that 2010 and hit close to 200,000 miles. But it didn’t happen. I have a 2014 with the pentastar. The oil sender went spewing oil all over the engine bay... probably due to severe cold temperatures (-42 degrees). It's a know weakness in the engine.

I have a Power Wagon and 2019 ram 1500. I just picked up new 2022 GMC with a 2.7 turbo 4 cylinder. 430 lbs of torque for a Dailey work truck. Very impressive so far . I always thought Ram would turbo the pentastar at some time.

Well the inline 6 twin turbo engine should be replacing the the 3.6 pentastar at some point in the near future!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this engine vs. the 5.7. One topic that you did not mention was cost of ownership; outside of the fuel cost differences. By this, I mean specifically maintenance. Assuming that the average person won't have your skill set for doing their own tune ups for example, what difference would you estimate there is between a tuneup for the 5.7 Hemi and the Pentastar. I'm imagining variables such as maintenance schedules for things such as spark plug changes, labor hours, or normal maintenance schedule parts costs. It would be great to get your take on this given your knowledge and expertise. Thanks again for really informative videos!

The ecodiesel was something along the lines of 30 mpg and i was averaging 33 on long highway trips back when i had one.

    • @SupramanTRD
      @SupramanTRD 4 месяца назад

I really wanted to give the ecodiesel a shot. But cam gear sprockets breaking free, bearing failure, and crankshafts splitting in half is just too much risk. Hemi is no better with the lack of oil to the cam which causes the cam/lifter failure. Pentastar is your best bet.

I have a 2014 with the 3.6, bought it with 35,000 miles. Now has 165,000 miles and have had zero problems and all I’ve done is regular oil changes and tune up at 100k miles, I even towed a 8000lb camper 60 miles to campground in the spring and back home again in the fall every year, for 4 yrs. Granted this is the northern Midwest with no hills, I wouldn’t recommend it anywhere else, but it got the job done every year. My neighbor has one with 275,000 on it.

Not my favorite engine, but Chrysler uses it in absolutely everything. It's comparable to a Toyota GR engine. It's not fast or powerful, but it is reliable. Well I mean as compared to an ecodiesel or hemi for that matter.

Enjoy your videos but your data on the cylinder head is incorrect. There's no detonation problem, more of a stem/guide issue causing misfires on early build engines. With very basic maintenance this engine is incredibly durable and a very good overall performer especially considering no GDI or turbos.

    • @TheGettyAdventures
      @TheGettyAdventures  Год назад

I will have to double check my facts, thank you for bringing that up. But it seems like as you said if good maintenance these engines will run for a long time.

Based on my experience and the fact of a class action suit on the issue, I’d be sure to have sufficient warranty coverage during ownership. The repair for P0302 costs $3000 at the dealership. It’s a great engine with up to 28mpg in my minivan. Made it to 135,000 miles.
