The “pointy thing” on German helmets from World War I (Pickelhaube) was not for aesthetics, but rather to deflect cavalry saber blows to the head. But by the time of World War I, the cavalry was already a dying, outdated branch of the military. Later German helmet models no longer used it. And the helmets were actually used (rarely) as a weapon in close combat when no other weapon was available but usually German soldiers used their personal folding spades for that.

8:56 Okay so why do they have the pointy thing on German helmets? It was actually put there for Saftey. When parts of building and debry during the battle the spike would actually protect the person from fatal injury because the Object falling overhead would hit the spike and then collapse in such a way it would Avoid Crushing and snapping the soilders neck. The Spike was there for saftey. they did NOT use it to charge and headbutt into enemies however later on Germany Opted out from the spike technique to save money money and prevent their troops from being so easily identified. Was used alot to seperate French and German infantry

I was surprised to go to college and find out a lot of people on the mainland don't learn about them, so I am happy to see they are recognized all the way in Texas!
I'm really glad they spent time on the 442nd. There needs to be movies made of the soldiers from that military unit. They're the most decorated military unit in US history including 21 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.
@@chaost4544 Yes, I agree!! They deserve so much more recognition than they got, and sadly the vast majority of those from the 442nd have passed away, my grandpa included.
There was an independent movie made in Hawaii about them/100th Infantry, as well as a good documentary with first hand accounts from 442/100th soldiers, but nothing “big” like Hollywood levels. I recommend everyone to look into the 442/100th Infantry if you ever come to Hawaii, we have a lot of resources and info about them here!
The purple heart division? They are a famous unit.
Emi had the right reaction to tectone's Naruto reference.

@Lord_Reeves I think he's speaking to the fact that he has little understanding of military history, or history in general.

Give that museum man a tip for this. He carried hard on this vid.
The Canadian forces used calvary in WW1. Lots of dead horses.
@@Tsaniko Fun Fact - the last mounted cavalery charge was performed by the polish in 1945 in Schoenfeld against german defences. It was succsessfull.
Ya this tour had no idea what he was talking about lol
Our royal guard here in Sweden wears this type of helmet
I heard it mainly served to provide more structural integrity to the domed top. That would certainly help deter saber blows.

Tectone would say something like: "So in Call of Duty you always have the post-game lobbies with lots of trash talk, how did the soldiers trash talk after their battles?"
Hahahah

This video is so great because it could have easily been a "tectone doesn't know when WW2 is" meme, but instead it's just really charming watching Ed gush about this thing he's super passionate about. Meanwhile, you watch asmon, who knows his shit just get to listen and learn more and offer his two sense. You have tectone asking genuine questions, getting answers wrong and staying humble and eager to learn more. Emi is really interesting because she doesn't interject but ever so often you see her in this video get really into something Ed is saying. It's just a really dope look at people being open to learn and being enthusiastic about a subject that most people wouldn't give the time of day. Well done, guys.
More episodes like this. Chilling with the crew, learning stuff.
As a former Royal Danish life guard, (the guys with the bear hats), we still had our sabers. They where from the 1 and the 2 world war, and even ealeryer, some from the 1800s. We had to polish them every day, and use them when on guard duty to signal when we went off duty and on duty

her facepalm in that moment was legit the reason the it was invented for.
also props to the camera guy for timing the pan over so well. definite office vibes.
“How many tank has this people blown up?”
Considering where it came from, it might did genocide at some point.
Probably took out quite a number of Syrians and Egyptians that tried to genocide the Jews in 48
Yeah sure, it might did. I doubt it, because the threshold for genocide back then was genocide. Not like today's version of genocide. But I don't know for sure, so it might did indeed.
