  • Sheffields Castle Market, soon to be gone. A great place full of great sheffield people. I have been going here all my life. It may be run down but it is a true part of our heritage. Sadly cameras are not allowed but ,,,,,,,,,,,

I walked round it today for the first time in god knows how many years. I was overwhelmed by a sense of nostalgia, for my dad and gran brought me here many times in my childhood. I was struck by how little Castle Market has changed, and felt more than a bit sad that soon it will be gone forever. It may be shabby and dated, but it's OURS!!

It's been at least 20 years since I visited the old market. It's not changed, It brought back so many memories of my childhood, walking around with my mum and dad, then a while later on my own with some friends. The place was always full of some wonderful Sheffield people. Thank you for sharing this.

I feel like crying after watching this. It brought back so many memories of a far happier time. I remember the day in 1984,that I spent a lovely day with my mum. I had just left school, and she was so proud of my exam results, that she wanted to treat me. We went into the castle market, and she bought me a great big chocolate bar,and then we went to Harrington's and she bought me a lovely pair of bleached jeans, and a beautiful jumper. I have a photo of me wearing the new clothes when I got home.
That is one of my most cherished memories. As a middle child of 5,I didn't get much alone time with her.
Thankfully she is still around today, but sadly she won't even leave the house,or let me in,because the BBC have helped keep her afraid so much of Covid.
    What has happened to sanity?
Thanks for making and sharing this.

Great Video.. Loved castle Market! run down yeah, but it still had charm, but going in there was a like a time machine/nostalgia trip for me and I can imagine for many others. Plus, a great atmosphere in there, such a shame it's now none existent, enjoyed by many. Little scene outside the 18 hour cafe in This is England 88 too! The Moor is stinking in my eye's, literally too. Really wish they actually listened to the public for once and thought about renovating the place. Cheers for uploading this!

It truly was one of those buildings with the odd bit of character that was irreplaceable. I do miss the place indeed.

Thank you so much for doing this. I spent hours wandering round Sheffield as a kid and the Castle Market was one of my favourite places. So much life, so much history, so many ghosts. Now living in the US and haven't been back to the city in years. This brings back so much. Thank you.

Thanks for the video. Have a lot of childhood memories walking round there and it seems surreal the building isn't there anymore. Thanks for letting me be able to walk around there once more.

I used to love the old market . It was like putting an old moth eaten but much loved cardigan . I do use the moor market but I never get the same feeling of community down there . The thing I dislike the most is the way all the cafe stalls are all together in the meadowhall style . It used to be good to stand at the end of the counter at Shaws with my sausage and tomato sandwich and mug of tea on a Saturday morning . Although the idiot that took it over ruined that experience sending me towards the soda fountain instead .

So many memories, someone once told me it was one of only 5 markets that was multi floored - Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Sheffield, still not sure if it was true or not.

I grew up in Sheffield and remember I used to love the smell and atmosphere of the fish market. Everyone told me I was weird.

Look whats happened to the city centre now. Hardly no shops xept posh shops who hardly ever get any customers in them.its almost as if poorer on a budget people dont matter anymore. Its so sad.words cant describe it.

Money should have been spent modernising castle market instead of moving to a much smaller place down the Moor. The new place is not a patch on the old one. Bad mistake IMO
