    Years ago, my sister-in-law was impaled by a beach umbrella. She did not die but she had to have emergency surgery. I never thought I'd hear of something like that again in my life; something I thought to be a freak accident. My deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

      @@melodramatic7904 It happens all around the world, but never makes it past local news, being a global hazard that requires a global safety standard. Moreso with the severity, unpredictability and suddenness of weather and wind patterns under climate change, that will only grow worse with time.

    I heard from someone whose SIL was there when it happened. Apparently it went through her left arm then pierced her chest from the side. The unfortunate part is the guy that was with her freaked out and immediately pulled out the umbrella...big mistake. The SIL is a nurse and tried to keep pressure on it, but sadly she could not be saved.
    This said, don’t remove impaled objects. It likely will make the wound much worse and could be the difference between life and death.

      Thanks for the reminder. Sometime even when we are not in a panic mode we might still think that it is better to remove whatever objects from the body instead of leaving it them there.

      @amandarogerson9132 2 года назад +53

      Never remove an impaled object, anything that has punctured the body, knives, sticks, pipes, umbrellas, large pieces of glass, anything stuck in deep pretty much. Once it goes in it damages the tissue, and creates a wound, but the object now works as a sort of plug to prevent excessive bleeding since it is pressed in the wound and against the injury,. Once you remove it you have opened the wound, and there's nothing keeping it from bleeding. A medical professional should be the only person to remove it, in a hospital, or trauma center. Also depending on the object, pulling it out can cause a bigger injury. Such as a knife, when you pull it out it can cut even more on the way out, or you could hit an artery or nerve or something causing more pain, and damage to the body part and tissue surrounding it. It could be deadly to remove it.

    • @prezadent1

    They used to be installed and bringing your own forbidden. Rental would close and warn.
    Odd umbrella would still fly but extremely rare unless a beach goer placed their own behind the main line illegally.
    Tourists often don't know these things if they have no experience.

    As a cat I find situations like these very interesting because humans can easily prevent many bad things that happen but refuse to do so. As a Ninja Cat I can't understand why. We cats always care for each other and always try minimizing the risks of danger to each other as much as possible. I do wonder. Is it possible that you guys excercise social darwinism? Also don't attack me for saying that because I never said there is anything wrong with social darwinism I am just asking. Maybe you guys are interested in it who knows. As a cat I can't know.

    Boucher Brothers, the company that operates these umbrellas, has known that they are unsecure and dangerous by design for at least 10 years. My girlfriend was almost impaled by one about 10 years ago, so I wrote to their corporate headquarters, after their umbrella impaled our lounger like a javelin, right where she was sitting just moments ago. They responded by sending a compensation for the damaged lounger and an apology from their local manager (who initially didn't care at all and refused to even take this seriously). I expounded in the letter that their umbrellas are basically sharpened spears that are poorly secured in sand and advised them to use a better and safer anchoring system. Sad to see this woman died a very preventable death.
