What a fantastic and inspiring interview, man. Shout out to Joe for all the great questions. It’s always so cool hearing Dave talk about his earlier days and name droppin all of our other heroes. It’s hard not to picture all those stories happening while he’s reminiscing. Incredible career and legacy this man has built.
👀🙏💪🤩🤘🇨🇦
I saw Dave for the first time around 1982 or 3 w Chick at an outdoor jazz fest in Liverpool, NY. Stood there with my mouth agape - didn't think what he was doing was even possible. Got to shake his hand and get an autograph decades later. Been following him for years and he's still my all time.
ok, ok...
Thank you, DAVE. You are my HERO. You're my BIG reason i play drum now. My circumstances was never allowed me to become a drummer until my age 24 (yeah, very late). But here i am, travel the world as a drummer. BIG Thanks. Thank to Joe too for great questions that drummers need. Now is 5am here. Time to sleep 😇🙏
Finally dream come true... Playing drum with your Star DAVE..... Dave really proud of you Sonny ❤️❤️
Keep going sonn.. great job 👍😍
It took courage and persistence to be who you are now. So, don't forget to thank yourself too. Bravo 👏👏
@@evahiendriana1819 Thank you, hopefully someday
😄🙏
Thank you,@@yulivanhadi4160 😊🙏
I agree, Dave Weckl is one of those drummers who changed our view of drumming. Met him almost 20 years ago at PASIC and he has remained at the top of my list ever since. Thanks, Dave!
“ changed our view of drumming.” Well said.
I am one of the house photographers at Iridium Jazz Club in New York, a club Dave has played at countless times. I have seen Dave there many times and always make it a point
to see him when he's playing there. Dave may not remember my name but he does recognize me and is always gracious when I go backstage and welcome him back yet again.
I had him sign one of my 11x14 prints and he liked it so much that he asked for his own copy. I returned the next day with a copy for him. I have seen some of the best drummers in the world,
including Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson. Dave is in my top 5 of all-time. He never ceases to amaze me with his playing. His technique is damn near flawless and his command of the kit is
mind boggling. I usually stand off to his floor tom side and watch him do his thing from that angle. I was a drummer myself for 15 years so imagine what a treat that is. Dave is truly a drummer's drummer and a master at his craft. Thanks for this great interview
Dave was my hero back in the 80's - 90's with Chick & after. Still is a huge influence. I remember buying Master Plan when it came out. It was my prized CD, and is a legendary record for sure.
As a drummer for the past 50 years and a big fan of Dave for many years I loved this interview. Great in-site into what pushes David buttons and how he operates. Some surprises here but if you’ve listen to Dave for the past 30 years you know his stuff. His Jazz is off the hook and he has truly mastered RLRRLRLL
I’m 63 and have been playing since I was a boy.
This in my opinion, is THE best interview regarding drumming - that Ive ever seen.
Exceptional.
Many thanks-
Best wishes to all musicians and all others during these difficult times - we will all get through this and back to normal. Be flexible.
Thanks, but we will NEVER get back to "normal". The New World Order is in progress.
Now that they've seen how much obedience they can milk out of the populace with a 99.9% survivable virus, things will never be "normal" again.
Excellent interview, Dave in a friendly manner described his early days, and confirmed many things that I had only heard second hand. Some extremely useful information here, I would recommend that everyone watch this video !!! Huge thank you to all involved !!!
This was totally enjoyable , he is a master of his craft, and a asset to the field of drums. As a drummer for many years I agreed to alot of Dave Weckls philosophy on reading playing along to soundtracks and practice, practice , practice! It was great and thank you.
I can't express how grateful I am for watching this. This is pure gold. Thanks for doing it!
Mr.Weckl thank you for sharing a lot of topics from your career ,very very inspiring and your positivity in these crazy times.
Mr. Testa thank you for putting this togheter, you didn,t miss a question for Dave in my opinion for us musicians what we would like to know from mr.Weckl..
Greetings from Holland!
John Muskiet
American One Productions Rehearsal and Drum Studios in NJ gives two huge thumbs up 👍🏻🥁👍🏻. Fantastic Video! Thanks for sharing 😃
Fantastic Dave! Thank you for your wisdom. And Thanks Vic Firth for making it happen!
Thanks for all the musical memories, and the inspiration to practice hard.
Saw dave play with Mike Stern a few years ago. I bought tickets to the second show right away. I was blown away. I could’ve actually said hello but I didn’t know what to say. Just great great playing.
This video has very important information many of the question been asked to Dave was in my head for 20 years. Thank you Dave for your answer and dedication to help other drummer and very well done for your knowledge you are a legend together with all the other drummer you mention. Thank you
Mr Weckl.. You are just the best ever!! I love the way you play. Just love it! You have inspired me through my journey and you are still inspiring me.
Forever grateful!! Do you recall coming to a place called Adelaide in South Australia?
Absolutely Fantastic . Great interview. Dave Weckl, thank you so much for everything you have given us in the world of music. Your wisdom, knowledge and experience shared here is just brilliant. Best Wishes to you from Gold Coast, Australia.
Great video, really appreciate it thankyou.
I just loved this interview. Fantastic. One of favorite drummers.
very informative video, i´m a fan of dave since 1999 but still didn´t know lots of things that he mentioned ... brilliant treasure
Great Interviewer!!...Let Weckl speak with no interruptions!!
My idea too! Superb
Thanks so much for all your great playing and teaching
Thank you so much Dave Weckl and Vic Firth! Loved this so much!
Today was a long wait but when it got to 8pm if felt like Christmas had come around.
I have Listened, Learned & Loved this guy right from "Contemporary Drummer + 1"
It was at that point in those early day's I realized Dave Weckl was about to become a
huge name in the Drumming industry, he was different, he was special, just like Vinnie.
There is I think 5yrs difference between Dave & Vinnie, both different in many ways but
both are individually at similar levels traveling in different but similar directions.
For the last 30-35yrs I believe these 2 Cats have always been kind of Untouchable due
to always being in demand, their Devotion & Passion towards the instrument, never
looking at the clock when practicing, suddenly 10hrs have gone by, (That's when it's best)
Both Dave & Vinnie felt they wanted to be The Best Drummer In The World at a very young
age and that Philosophy has and will remain with them right to the very end.
I couldn't ask for anything better than to have these 2 guys as Teachers, As Mentor's,
they both keep me on my toes for sure. Cheers Joe, always worth the wait getting to
interview and share the Dave Weckl Experience World Wide. Finally God Bless You Dave,
Your Lovely Wife Clivia & Proud Daughter Clare. Stay patient Dave, Good things come to
those who wait. Thank You for giving me many many years of Pure Class.
@Carbon Unit Are you not a fan of Van Gogh then?
@Carbon Unit I was talking about the level both Dave & Vinnie are at,
not their styles.
Watch his arm and hand movements. Joel said nobody practiced as much as Dave albeit Vinnie. Like Porcaro had, has magic elbows and hands. He's honest and understands what it takes to be where he is now. A giant where we reside on his shoulders. Brilliant.
Thanks Dave and Joe for this great interview and lesson!!!
Wow, great lesson.....but what an incredible performance on the Oz Noy tune. Dave Weckl is always at the highest level
Wow, great video and great conversation with one of my favorite drummers - Dave Weckl. I can't believe you guys put up a nearly 2 hour video and didn't talk about sticks one time... Great music conversation though. lol... Love it! Please post more videos like this. Thanks!!!
i was sooo glad he played that 16note feel from ultimate play along with mike and john on the track !!!! that´s my fave track for morethan 15 years
I agree, it's very infectcious.
Thank you for a wonderful time! Great interview concept🙌🙏
Dave Weckl, my inspiration.
Gracias por compartir tus conocimientos y por ser mi inspiracion en la bateria.
Amazing, you`re the BEST. Z
Love Dave Weckl!

Thanks for your insights. Great fun!
Gracias Maestro por esta clase !!
Dave is best.
no one is coming even close
@@DeejayRach0 good lad 😄
Thanks Dave sir for sharing such wonderful insights. Esp from 53:36 onwards.... Being musical and not drumistic
so interesting! thanks to Dave and Vic Fith!
Very nice 👍,awesome guy ✌🏻Dave BEST EVER!!!!!!
Hi Dave and Joe, thank you for such a great interview. Joe, good interview technique, you've let Dave speak instead of interrupting him all the time, as many interviewers do. Dave talks as he plays, from the first word (or note) he drugs you "in" - and you're in the Zone. :-)
AMAZING!!!!!! BROTHERS!!!!
Cool explanation about the bounce back.
Thanks for your insights. Great fun:)
Man, his Just Groove Me - solo...
As good as it ever was. 👏👏
Thanks brother
The great dave weckl ,,,
A true master!
Dave! Lo vi en el Festival de Playa del Carmen 💞
Great interview with a great musician! 🥁
those fills in the Oz Noy´s solo were sooooo tasty!!! .. like good old Dave back in the early 90´s
Awesome interview!
Valeriy, I know you play drums too
even though your forte is keys.
Having Dave Weckl for Inspiration
you can't go wrong. I would love to
hear what the both of you would
come up with together. Maybe
some day a Valeriy.
Amazing!!!
In the live chat box during this Dave Weckl live stream I typed out a question which sadly
never got read out to Dave, but my question was, When recording your own projects
do you tend to go for a 95% Drum Mix at the very beginning before going for a take, as
opposed to achieving the entire Drum Mix at the end of a successful take?
Only I find when I have recorded my Drums to your Backing Tracks I tend to
spend the time trying to achieve that 95% Drum Mix at the very beginning in terms
of Volume, Effects, Gates, Room, Ambience, EQ etc rather than after a successful take.
Achieving a decent Drum Mix before recording makes the recording performance sound
polished and makes me play better knowing my Drum Mix is almost 100%, if not 100%, so
when listening back to that first decent take there really isn't much, if any tweaking to do.
A humble Giant and a fuckin genius , this is what Dave is . He could play with two bananas in his hands and make'em sound great anyway. Imho the G.O.A.T. in the business. Keep it up like that Dave.
First time I heard Weckl playing was Michael Camilo’s Why Not track
Absolutely knew drummers had a new standard playing drums...
DW plays BEAUTIFUL on "Why Not", one of my favorite album he plays on.
Check him playing with special EFX. Album Called Slice of life, check him in the song Formal Invitation. Right from the start killing it!!!
Super Dave...!
The grand master.
Damn. That dude has the slickest style.
Saw him perform in Altos de Chavon Amphitheater Dominican Republic with M Camilo, A Jackson.. His beats have meaning, melody... ufff
Indeed, she sounds great on Spotify
School Jazz Band is the best. I myself won a "Louis Armstrong Award" in high school. I didn't even really enjoy "school band" but you couldn't be in jazz band if you werent IN BAND 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tom Kennedy is one of my fav Bassists 💯
just super inspiring to see music in motion! art.
Very Nice! 😅🥁🎶
FANTASTICO !!!!!!!!
What do we live for, if not to make life less difficult for each other?
What APP for the camera switching is Dave using? It looks incredible for multi-cam on-line drum lessons..... Great talk!!!!! Thank you!!!!
I guess it is the Roland V-1HD Video Switcher. In the stream the buttons changed the camera angles. You can see the device right next to his floortom on the left side here 1:19:49
Great chat. Thanks very much.
FANTASTICOOOOOO!!!
Hi sir what device you are using while switching on the other cameras
Dave's intense. But you have to be to play on that level. Amazing drummer. Musical. Which is a compliment.
Great!
Noticed right away Mr Steve Gadd was one of his big influences...
Seems like Dave finally completed his transformation into Doc Brown.
The way i approach playing "musically" is I'll have my kick playin' w/ the bassist & my snare playing with melody instrument. Ride & HH keep the pulse with whatever subdivision the song utilizes, & the rest of the kit for kicks, splashes, fills & frills 😂
Also..... YES. THE BUILD UP! i approach a song the same way. The drums are really driving that story.... I play like a "story" you should NEVER repeat ANYTHING unless it's MEANT TO BE repeated like parts of a chorus for instance. Other than that, you should never ever repeat your phrases
11:48 "Joel's a great player": and to prove Dave's point. If you fellow drummers on here have not seen this before; you just gotta check this out: my favourite drum solo (over a vamp) of all time ruclips.net/video/Q50Scn6BSrY/видео.html I think on this performance Joel kicked Dave's ass back!
Dave, ya outta get Nite Sprite together in the basement before they get any older? Seemed like you enjoyed it! James Moss is alive and well!
magic...
wow he's getting up there
Sound person: Hi, thanks for showing up for me to do sound on you with my hip-hop ears...don't get me wrong I like Metallica too!
Deberían traducir al Español, quienes no tenemos conocimiento fluido del inglés se nos dificulta entender. Con los adelanto que hoy se tiene no debería de ser complicado traducir los vídeos.
Gracias. Saludos!
Do Jojo Mayer next😃
Legend 😀👌🏻
Best unitended takeaway: You can you the Floor Tom as a mouse pad!!!🥁🖱😅 1H:41M
I'm gonna go drum now...
Hey groove!
Contrasting precision time with loose time

😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I think Dave is better than Buddy because Dave performs with a much larger vocabulary and better feel. In reality it's because they are different people with Dave, playing a wider variety of music. Anyway, I like Dave's playing better than Buddy. Preference, not disrespect. This is the most I've heard Dave speak. He is very professional and chill at the same time.
1.40.55 he can use his floor tom like mouse pad
Wisdom
Interesting when he talks about how he's not interested in playing hard rock, because of the lack of finessse.
I've always wondered if he liked Bonham, as he played in that genre, but was heavily influenced by Gene Krupa and soul, so his playing is littered with ghost notes and he had a great feel.
Plus his toms were almost tuned like a jazz drummer and he had a four piece kit.
Bonham was just a great drummer fullstop, who played hard rock and brought a great swing to it.
Just listen, or try and play along to Whole Lotta Love, it's hard to nail it.
Led Zeppelin is not Hard Rock, it's Rock'n Roll, I'm sure DW has a lot of love and respect for Bonzo, who does not anyway ? :o
@@RogerBiwandu They were hard rock. Ginger Baker didn't rate Bonzo and I'm sure there are others.
@@simonperry8569 Ginger, RIP, was not a good person I've heard so...
