I'm watching this video and having a flashback to a clinic over 30 years ago where Dave and I were talking afterwards particularly about tendonitis I was having in my shoulders and the excruciating pain I was experiencing. He was so down to earth like a guy known all my life talking to me literally with his arm around my shoulder giving me advice along with his condolences to how he hopes I get over the pain eventually etc... Just the nicest guy I had ever met in the music world at that time!! Then he came through town with Chick Corea in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He remembered talking to me and gave me and my lady passes to come downstairs and talk in the dressing room for an hour after the show. Great memories never go away and Dave weckle is a complete and total class act! One of the best guys in the game and I'm blessed to be able to appreciate his music still! Just wanted to give a shout out to everyone on what it means to conduct yourself properly in any context for the reasons I just explained... Hope everyone's healthy out there and we all get working soon again! ✌️🥁👍

I'm 35 and have been playing since I was about 10...I've learned more about HOW to play in the last friggin hour watching this one video of one of my heroes, than in that whole time of just watching videos of live shows and working it out myself. When I get off work in the morning, I'll be spending most of my next day off reworking my whole approach to the kit as well AS my kit itself. Thank you Dave, amazing as always

Hey Dave always enjoy watching and learning from you. I lived in Naples in 1968 to 1972 the 5 yrs. was. great and of course continued to play during my stay there. alot of Jazz there along with rock during that time.. Like you Dave I always was a traditional player and it just seemed natural vs. match.Im 68 and Jazz was always my forte but played rock as well. Went to An American High school in Italy.

I’v e been teaching all of my students to play open handed for quite a few years now, and after a slow start, they pick it up fast and are comfortable playing either way. The main benefits I’ve found are that their left hand gets as much workout as the right when playing grooves on the hi hat, and it opens them up for the other hand moving around the drum set.

Dave touches on his changing perspective over time, and he almost sounds as though he sacrificed his front-of-the-hand technique for his more fluid technique. But one thing I'd point out is that it really isn't a sacrifice. In fact, that older technique is still available to use, should the need appear. You're really just adding a new set of skills to your old set, when you modify your technique. I hope people realize that, so that they aren't afraid to expand their skill-sets.
It's not like you're losing your old abilities. You're just adding new ones.

The exercise he shows at about approximately 20:38 is called the “BOUNCE 1” ex. This was the very first I mean the very first exercise FRED GRUBER showed me when I had my first lesson with him on April 2, 1969 (I still have the notes for that lesson )! there are actually two versions of this exercise there’s a “bounce 1” which dave is demonstrating here…. And then there was another exercise a companion exercise to this one which was called the “bounce 1-2” which included an extra step! He would start in the hand and stick In the Straight up and she’s position with the fulcrum which is the thumb and first finger off the stick as Dave is showing here and then you just let the stick fall to the pad at the same time you slightly open the 3 fingers and let the stick fall to the pad naturally and it will bounce itself out! Once the stick stops bouncing at the tip of the stick only the tip of the stick strikes the pad or drum in this exercise but after the stick bounces itself out you gently from the knuckles squeeze the stick into the palm of the hand against the fatty part (The groove of the palm! the butt the stick should lay next to the groove of the palm in this position) of the palm now the tip of the stick should be angled up slightly you’re about a half
an inch to an inch off the drum then and only then do you make a perfect return from the hinge up to the starting position and repeat and that’s the “bounce 1-2” again this is the very first exercise along with the “bounce 1” that Freddy taught me back in April 1969 before we did anything else he wanted me to get used to the weight of the stick and how it’s felt in the hand depending on where you are in the stroke what a genius exercise I still practice to this day well sometimes anyway the “bounce 1” and the “bounce 1-2”!
