It's the idea that all ppl are created equal and should be free to rise to their full potential. No matter who you worship, what you look like, who you love etc. If you will work hard then you can have the life YOU want ❤ America has many flaws like other countries. There are also sooo many good and kind ppl in America from all walks of life with ancestors across the world. We all look different and many believe different but we are American and free. I served in the US military for 30 years. Your reaction to our National Anthem blessed me. The USA is a nation, of course, but more importantly it's an idea, of what free people can achieve. Anyone, regardless of race, religion, nationality, etc., who yearn for freedom are my countrymen and kinsmen. I continuously fly our flag in front of my home (properly illuminated throughout the night with spotlights), and I live in a very windy state (Colorado), so I've had had to burn two flags that were blown from their mounts in the past year. I have nine grandchildren, and this past Thanksgiving I was honored to show them how to properly fold the flag and what to with a flag that has touched the ground, i.e., burn it. Some are too young to understand, but I'd like to believe it still made an impact on them. We Americans are greatly blessed and must never take what we have for granted, and do whatever we can to assist others who struggle for freedom.

He instilled in his 7 kids his Love for the Flag and our country. My Oldest sister was stationed in Germany during Desert Storm. When I had my last baby. Boy. He decided he hated all the usual songs, sleep deprived Mom's sing. The only other song I knew all the words to was this song. As soon as I started to sing it he started calming down. Then he would listen to it. His older 2 sister's n would sing this song to him anytime he'd cry. He would stop and listen. We'd sing it over and over. As he got a little older his interest grew from the song to the Flag itself. He Loved pointing out any and all Flags anywhere we went. Momma Flag Flag!! Our neighborhood Walmart was the closest store to Camp Williams, UT. He would clap and laugh when the "Army Guys(Gals)" would turn so he could see they had Two Flags! We would always say Thank You! A LOT of times they would say thank you for giving us something to smile about from your son. He 14 years later still has a deep Love of both the Flag and our National Anthem.

There's no reason for the pitch to change so dramatically. It needs to be set to better music than a drinking song where it didn't matter if you couldn't hit all the notes.

I started my search for military service in our family after I saw a tombstone in our family plot on our original homestead which is still in our family. I discovered that our families have been involved in every battle our country has been in since the 1600’s. My uncle received 2 bronze stars from WW11. But he told no one, I found it while doing research. My husband was in the US Navy in Vietnam, his father was in WE11 in the Army Aircorp which became our AirForce. Our youngest son served 22 yrs and 3 months in the AirForce and he never lets me forget the 3 months. He is retired because of medical problems otherwise he wanted to re enlist for another 6 yrs, but he had been injured several times and had many surgeries so he could not. I now have 2 grandsons in the AirForce one is a second lieutenant. I also have a niece that has served over 30 years in the AirForce. As I was doing research I discovered that the Scottish and Irish were sold into slavery to the British people living here. I was taught to be very proud of my Scottish and Irish heritage. After learning that it gave me a new perspective. We are a very proud American Family and we gladly serve. Ours is completely voluntary no one is drafted, that alone should tell you how much we love our country. Thank you for your showing respect for our country. Nothing makes me prouder then hearing that song knowing that my daddy and my tios and all American military men and women sacrifice so much for our flag and what it stands for! Thank you for this video!

While serving in the US Navy, I had the honor of being part of a colorguard for burials at sea….. it is by far the most honorable thing I’ve ever done, and the flag covering the body. We folded in a way as to show six stars on one side, seven on the other, representing the original 13 colonies……. And this is also why every American, who gives their life has a flag covered coffin, and then the same procedure is repeated, and and then that flag is presented to their loved one.

I’m an American, and I was in high school in 1975 as a Senior. It was “fashionable” at that time to wear a patch of the American flag on your clothing, or to wear the Stars and Stripes down the side of your jeans or on the back pockets of your jeans. I had a female public school teacher my senior year who taught us in a Government course. She would not allow the American flag to be worn on our clothing because she said it was disrespectful to the flag and what it stood for. She told us she and her husband, who was in the U.S. navy during WWII, were stationed on a tiny island just south of Japan during this war. The only thing, and she stressed THE ONLY THING, that kept the Japanese from wiping that tiny island off the face of the earth was the one American flag they flew daily. Most countries know: you step on the little toe, no matter how small, of any part of America, and you will suffer the wrath of the US military. Sooo…we respected her wishes and did not wear clothing with the American flag on any part of our jeans/shirts while we were enrolled in her Government class.

The flag from the battle was restored in 2008.
They initially put it on a piece of wood(I believe that was the object) to preserve it, which caused more damage in the long run.
It took 8 years for experts around the world to restore as much as possible.
I'm not sure where the person who commented below got the information that it's not the actual flag from Fort McHenry that flew that night.
I've never read that anywhere. It would make sense that they would have saved it since it was such a huge victory for America.

America and Great Britain are Family, both Figuratively and Literary, although many generations have passed, we still are and always will be! That's why our Countries always have one another's backs! We love our English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh Ancestors, and many of us Americans first still identify with them are proud of it! I love my Scottish and Irish Ancestry!

Just a couple small corrections. This was in 1814, during what we call was the war of 1812, our 2nd fight for Liberty against the British after they tried to reconquer the US.
Also, it’s at Fort *Mc*Henry, not Fort Henry. And for the record, the fort is still there, it wasn’t wiped off the face of the earth, and the flag was never lowered in that battle.
Many Leftists want to remove things like this story from our history because they don’t like the America of our Forefathers. America has never been perfect but it’s always striven to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. No country is perfect, but we should strive to be.

It began as a poem, something written to honor the very idea of what America was founded upon. No matter if you agree or disagree with your neighbor it's their right to believe, speak and worship how they feel. We tend to forget that. It speaks to the power a few words can have. over 200 years later this song speaks to millions and means more to those dream of freedom. Those patriot lives that held that flag up, their blood paid for that freedom. It shows the American spirit, we would rather die on our feet then live on our knees.

I grew up in a military family. My senior year of high school I was in the choir and was honored when they asked me to sing the national anthem. I ended up singing it at nearly every sporting event that year. I had won several awards in competitions as a soloist, singing in different languages. However, I was definitely nervous the first time singing our anthem. I was shaking and my hands were sweating. I was so afraid I'd make a mistake and dishonor the anthem and the meaning behind it. I had performed in front of much bigger crowds, but this was the first time I thought I was going to pass out from nerves lol. Being chosen, and singing it with the deep emotions I held for it was definitely one of my proudest memories from school.

When I was in elementary school in the early 1970s every student in my class was required to sing or recite the Star Spangled Banner from memory. We also had to explain the meaning of each line of the song. As for how it was written we learned that Francis Scott Key went out to a British ship as a negotiator. When he was finished he could not go ashore because of the tide. He could do nothing but watch as the British fleet attacked the unnamed American fort. The next morning when he saw the American flag still flying it inspired him to write a poem that was later put to music and is now known as the Star Spangled Banner. There was no mention about any conversations he had on the ship or going to the fort. This next part comes from something I read in an issue of Reminisce magazine about 25 to 30 years ago. I’m doing this from memory so I might have some things wrong. In the early part of the 20th century the United States of America did not have a national anthem. The Star Spangled Banner was only one of about four or five different songs that were being considered. At the time many adults were against the song as they thought it glorified war. There were various conflicts going on in Europe and Asia that the American people wanted the American government to avoid. Among the other songs on the list the adults could not agree which one should be made the national anthem. Since this was not something to elect a political candidate or issues school children, many of them attending one room schoolhouses throughout the country were allowed to participate. The majority of the school children voted for the Star Spangled Banner and as it got more votes than any other song it was made the national anthem of the United States of America.

This is patriotic folklore. Key sailed down to secure the release of an elderly friend. He was never on a prison ship nor negotiated for their release. The battle was absolutely a horrific and constant bombardment of Ft. McHenry. However it is an earth-bermed structure which easily withstood the attack. The flagpole in the fort was extremely substantial and never fell. In the morning Key viewed the flag flying through a spy glass from his ship five miles off-shore. 6 Americans were killed and 24 injured in the attack. This battle was during The War of 1812.

I was so blessed by your reaction to our anthem and I can see that you really took it in. This is why in America you see the flag flown EVERYWHERE! It is the symbol of our nation and what it stands for which was wrought in the fires of war with the blood of patriots for FREEDOM! They paid with their very lives and we honor that sacrifice and always remember how high was the price that our forebearers paid. Like the quote from George Washington a military leader in the war for independence and the first president of our nascent republic said, "The American will die on his feet before he will live on his knees." It is still true to this day. I love our national amthem and cannot ever sing it or hear it without choking up even though we heard it every single day in school before the Plledge of Alllegiance. The words are so vivid and powerful that you always remember that freedom is not free. It cost Anericans their very lives which they gladly paid to keep us free. I feel it so deeply every time I hear it or sing it and it always makes me feel love and pride for my country as I sing through the tears. God bless America! 🇺🇸

Hello Mert, It's my first time here, thanks for allowing that! I enjoyed your reaction to our National Anthem. I subscribed and left a like while I was here. They hardly did any damage to the well fortified fort and the only four people that were killed were the ones holding the flag up, even they were fairly well protected, but a body can only take so much. If I'm wrong someone please correct me, but I'm sure our damages were small compared to what they dished out to us!
You missed the whole quote when you stopped in the middle of what George Washington said, "He will die on his feet before he'll live on his knees"!
This National Anthem has always been a part of my life and I've known the story surrounding it since I was a little girl, I'm 67 now! I'm not sure they teach children about this anymore, that's too American or whatever the issue is! It's sickening is what it is! Thank you for showing this. Now you have truly met America and our reverence for our flag as we will never forget the men who died for our freedom and our wonderful country. every American I know would still fight the same way to protect our country and who we are.

As a former Air Force veteran of 21 years, whenever I hear the Anthem it makes me think of all my friends who died for that flag and it never fails to bring a tear or two to my eyes.
