@@boristurovskiy351 There were lots of close-up shots of the Enterprise in TOS. There's a collection of these scenes from all 3 seasons of TOS on a video put together by Doug Drexler. You can find the video by Googling: Star Trek Original Series Enterprise Reference Shots Drexler

You should watch the Star Trek original TV series from the late 1960s, that'll give you a ton of character background and much more. Because that series had the most creative, colorful, AMBITIOUS plots in a hard-core sci-fi TV show with a low budget. I'll bet literally anything you'll find these extravagantly-acted old Trek episodes highly entertaining. And yes, Trek's Capt. Kirk was every bit the tough badass people have told you.

    • @StevenJShow
      @StevenJShow 8 месяцев назад +8

Just so we're clear though, Star Trek was not "low budget." It was one of the most expensive TV shows on the air at the time. It gets the rep of being low budget now because it is from the 1960s.
      Still, I absolutely agree.

I haven’t gotten through the whole video yet, but you really should watch the “Directors Edition”. It fixes a lot of problems with pacing and storylines. Robert Wise always considered the theatrical version an unfinished rough cut, but was under such a time crunch, he didn’t get the chance to tweak and re-edit the film before its release.

Ah, an intrepid explorer crosses the chasm between two of the great Science Fiction Monoliths of all time. Welcome to a universe of exploration and the human condition, where battles are made of wits and philosophy, and 99 percent of all alien species are separated by a few rubber facial add-ons. As much as the two franchises share a mythical rivalry, they truly do exist in their own paradigms, and compliment each other well. Where Star Wars is a grand space opera, with questions of faith, justice, and the hero's journey, Star Trek is all about discovery... both in the sense of the bizarre and unknown limits of imagination... and the discovery of who we ourselves are, and can be. Star Wars appeals to the valorous heart, and Star Trek appeals to the insatiable mind. I sincerely hope you enjoy the franchise, and I'll be subscribed to see how it goes from here!

    101 TV episodes (79 live-action one-hour, 22 animated half-hours) before the movies started.
The novelization of this film, written by _Star Trek's_ creator, Gene Roddenberry, indicates that the real Ilia's consciousness (her soul, if you will) inhabited the probe, so she was really there. Humans couldn't be intimate with members of her species because they completely share their minds with their partners, and the mental health of many other species, including humans, couldn't handle that. Therefore, Ilia's people had to take oaths of celibacy while serving in Starfleet. At the end, Decker, who'd realized the love of his life was truly present in the probe, could finally join with him this way, through V'ger.

The "Enterprise arrival" scene establishes the fact that the Enterprise is indeed as much of a character as the crew itself and is "her" introduction to the big screen as fans had not seen the ship in almost ten years. It also serves as a love letter for Kirk as his one true love, his ship.

Star Trek, at its best, is really quite philosophical, as this movie demonstrates. Questions of morality, ethics, questions about existence, and the search for new life drives all the stories of Star Trek. It's about exploration not just of space, but of the human condition and told through the medium of science fiction. There is much humor, drama, tension and action, but all of these are used to explore humanity. In that light, Star Trek is often quite cerebral and to me that's exciting. If you enjoyed this picture, and you seemed to indeed, you will enjoy the franchise - at least probably most of it anyway. There are now, after nearly 60 years, about a dozen movies or so, 8 separate live action TV series, a couple animated series, and many many many excellent stories. Star Trek, ST The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise make up the best of the Star Trek series from the 60's through to the early 2000's in live action. There was a long gap where Star Trek was not on TV except for reruns from those series I mentioned. In 2017 or so, "new" Star Trek was being produced, however it's lacking much of the magic of these older shows. "New" Star Trek includes "Discovery" , "Picard" which is a spinoff from the most excellent 80's/90's series The Next Generation, and the series "Strange New World." Discovery is, for me very meh. Picard had 3 seasons, with the third season being epic and extraordinary, and Strange New World is, in my view quite good. More Star Trek is in the works. I have loved Star Trek for 50 years. I've even read the many hundreds of novels published since the 70's. Despite some of the problems of "new" Trek, there are a solid 50 years of exceptional TV shows and movies that I am convinced you will wholeheartedly enjoy and you will enjoy some of the "New" Trek, I think, despite some of its problems. The Motion Picture, you just watched, is largely considered, by fans, the weakest of the movies. I quite like it for its philosophical storyline. You enjoyed its slower pace and the visuals, things most fans did not enjoy, so it is unlikely you'll not enjoy the rest of the movies. Star Trek is America's Doctor Who. It's got that long lasting legacy! I hope you will go down the rabbit hole and watch all the series. It's a wonderful, fun, emotional, entertaining, thought provoking, ride! I would suggest watching the series in the order of their release date and NOT series to series because there some overlapping storylines that span across different sets and actually play out as the series ran concurrently concurrently on TV. That would keep you from forgetting important story bits, or being confused by some storylines and allow you to experience the phenomenon as we did, just as it unfolded. If you start it you'll have 3 seasons of the Original Series, then 6 Original series movies of which you just watched the first. Then 7 sessions of the Next Generation which, on TV overlapped for about 3 seasons of Deep Space Nine which team for 7 sessions, and then 4 Next Gen movies, while watching DS9 which overlaps with Voyager for about 4 seasons and which also had a 7 season run, then Voyager and Enterprise overlap for a couple seasons with Enterprise sadly having only a 4 season run. When you finish Enterprise you've finished Star Trek at its very best, at its peak. Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds are not quite as good, though Strange New Worlds is probably the best of the 3 new shows, though Picard season 3 is AWESOME and very very emotional. Watching them as they aired will give you the full experience and you will be glad you did it that way. I'm here with you through your Star Trek journey, should you "accept the mission" , 😜 I predict you're going to fall in love with the franchise and really enjoy it. It's truly an EPIC journey. You'll feel like you've made friends with the casts. It's really amazing how these dudes get into your heart though good storytelling, amazing actors, and through the nearly 60 years of exploring the human condition. You'll laugh, might even get choked up, may even cry, I sure have, and you'll be on the edge of your seat with thrills, incredible cliff hangers, and yes action. It's simply brilliant!

The original series is definitely a prerequisite for watching the rest of Trek. I suggest watching the various series and movies in more or less the order they were released. Everything after 2005 was changed radically, and a great many fans think the core ideas that made Star Trek what it was are missing from 2005 on.
I haven't yet seen anyone comment explaining Spock's curt manner. His people, the Vulcans had a period in their history when emotions got the better of them and they nearly destroyed their entire civilization. After that, they chose to dedicate themselves to a more logical way of life. This included the nearly complete suppression of emotion. Watching the original series would be the best place to start. It explains a lot.
Star Trek Voyager, and Star Trek Enterprise also had Vulcans as main characters.
A lot of fans think Deep Space 9 has a couple of episodes that rank among the best in all of TV.

This was an interesting choice for first Star Trek movie/episode. I LOVE the Motion Picture. It's my favorite of the films in that it tries to be something bigger and grander than the rest. You watched the theatrical cut - they just came out with the directors edition in 4K which is absolutely brilliant. There is a lot of Star Trek to get lost in, and lots of it is worth checking out. If you get to watch the Star Trek Original series, from the 1960s, you will see TV-budgeted high-level SF achieved.
It's why Star Trek became such a huge thing.
You will also see that this story was done before. 'Nomad'.
    Worth seeking out.
It's often very good SF, sometimes silly. Sometimes it's just familiar drama in outer space. Still good.

This movie presumes you know who the main characters are, what Starfleet is, who the Klingons are. It presumes you know all about Kirk, Spock & McCoy's long time friendship, who his Vulcan father & human mother are; & all about Spock's struggle between his logical Vulcan side & emotional human side. The love letter to Enterprise is because it's been a decade since we last saw this ship, & it's for the fans. The TV Enterprise, a plastic model built in the late 1960s, was a more primitive model.
This movie was the first time we had a true Federation starship! All those aliens was a wonderful treat. Previously, Enterprise had a human crew + Spock.
Ultimately, it was one of Roddenberry's favorite plots: the search for God.

    • @robertcartier5088
      @robertcartier5088 8 месяцев назад +2

Good explanation of what the movie expected of its audience... In particular, for this film, newbies need to understand that bit about the rather long Enterprise reveal. ;-]
At the end there, perhaps you meant to say that his favorite plot was the _futility_ of the search for God, since Roddenberry was an atheist. You will notice that in most, if not all of those searches, when they found what they were looking for, it turned out to be something else entirely. Never more evident than in the line, _"What does God need with a starship?"_
Unlike religions, Gene wasn't presuming to teach us _what_ to think, but instead he showed examples of _how_ to think critically. The scientific method never really set out to replace religious superstition with knowledge... it's just a happy coincidence. ;-]

Fun Facts: the Creator of Star Trek Gene Rodenberry was a Navy man who sited Forester (Hornblower books) and O'Brian (Master and Commander) for inspiring him. The real British Navy Officer Cochrane inspired both writers. He served in four Navys and helped to found 4 Countries. Later he returned to England and helped transition the Brits to steam. Gene named his inventor of Warp drive for him. Also one of the first 6 US frigates was the Enterprise under Decator in the Barbary wars, her sister ship is the oldest active duty ship in the world still able to sail in Boston, USS Constitution. WWII Enterprise was a carrier as the following ships with the name. One is being broken up now with a replacement Ford class Enterprize being built (Provided the BO lobby don't get a name change).

Yes, Star Trek: TOS (The Original Series) has plenty of lore, but you picked a decent place to start anyway. The 1966 television series is just that, television level budgets for sets, and 1966 era visual effects. The narratives were groundbreaking for their time because they were veiled ways to address social issues of the day, and rather effectively. Yes, it's dated, but worth a watch if you grant it special consideration based on those things.

The only TV series to win a Hugo prior was The Twilight Zone and no other TV show would win again until the sequel Star Trek: The Next Generation a quarter century later (it garnered 3 nominations and 2 Hugo Awards in its run). As a lifelong Trekker I am probably in the minority with TMP being my joint fave Trek movie alongside ST2. It tells a really good smart science fiction story with characters I love and it sells the visuals, scale and the vastness and strangeness of space better than all the other Trek films IMHO. I highly recommend you watch the original series which features the same main cast (1966-1969). It's usually always on some channel here in the UK. Pretty sure it's Legend at the mo as I often catch an episode early weekday evenings despite owning them all and having seen them many, many times. Great way to relax by spending time with my old friends on the Enterprise. ☺

Star Trek, like Doctor Who, came from the 1960's. The original series, oft called just TOS, ran from 1966-69, was briefly an animated show in the 70's when it went into syndication & became huge... This is the first movie of six featuring the original crew. Subsequent other Trek spinoff shows have followed, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Voyager, Deep Space 9 all take place about 100 years after Kirk & co in the 24th century. The Trek universe is slowly 'fleshing out' with prequel shows like Enterprise (22nd century), Discovery & Strange New Worlds set prior to TOS.
At its heart Trek has a simple philosophy about a possible future of no war, no racism, no prejudice/bigotry, where we finally come together to explore space together. I suggest you check out TOS to get character backgrounds (you'll fall in love with the original crew) etc then move onto TNG which dramatically expanded the Trek universe back in the 80's.

Roddenberry had that kind of philosophy and he was a nut.

You've already noticed that Vulcans like Spock are an alien species who completely suppress all emotions and focus on logic. The Vulcans are the intellectual giants of the Star Trek universe, focused on intellect and not openly feeling. Vulcans are also telepathic and have the ability to read minds (to some degree) by putting their hands on someone's head.

I recommend checking out the following episodes of the original series before continuing on with this franchise -- most are episodes that the film series reference in some way, and the rest are simply some of the best episodes of the series:
    1. Where No Man Has Gone Before
    2. The Corbomite Maneuver
    3. Tomorrow Is Yesterday
    4. Balance of Terror
    5. Space Seed
    6. The Devil In The Dark
    7. Errand of Mercy
    8. City On The Edge Of Forever
    9. Amok Time
    10. The Changeling
    11. Journey To Babel
    12. The Doomsday Machine
    13. The Trouble With Tribbles
    14. Mirror, Mirror
    15. Let This Be Your Last Battlefield
This is by no means a comprehensive list, nor is it a "best of" list -- the original series had 79 episodes, and these 15 simply give a rough overview that will help give context to the films. I've ignored some great episodes simply because they have no direct impact on the film series, though I've included a few here which are just great episodes that should be seen.

From now on it is ok to continue with these 6 movies 1979 - 1991. Of course it is better to get to know the orininal series from the 1960s first to learn more about this crew. There are some cool stories to discover but of course it is difficult to watch an almost 60 yo tv show and not get distracted by the limitet visuals ;)
Star Trek - The Next Generation (the very iconic series I grew up with) continues the saga almost a century after captain Kirk. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) commands a way more modern ship in the late 24th century for 7 seasons until 1994 and 4 following movies until 2002 with an even newer Enterprise in cinema.
Deep Space Nine is the most complex series showing the following years and developing great character arcs. It was not to be continued in cinemas.
Voyager also takes place in those later 24th century years, no following movie as well.
Enterprise decided to tell the early years a century before Kirk, when the Federation of Planets was to be founded, when humans just began to explore deep space.
The following 3 movies and tv shows can be seen as a reboot of the franchise, so now a third generation of viewers can step on board the ship to discover strange new worlds, hoping the journey will never end :)

I quite like The Motion Picture, but I never would recommend starting with the films (not that it's impossible to do so, mind you). The assumption was that audiences had caught a few episodes of the TV series in syndication and already had a touch of familiarity with the characters and setting.
If nothing else, I would recommend the following three episodes as prerequisite viewing:
    1. Space Seed (Season 1) - referenced in Star Trek II
    2. Amok Time (Season 2) - referenced in Star Trek III
    3. Journey to Babel (Season 2) - referenced in Star Trek III
If someone wanted to know more about the two major alien villains, I'd also recommend:
    1. Balance of Terror (Season 1) - Romulan episode
    2. Errand of Mercy (Season 1) - Klingon episode
    3. The Trouble with Tribbles (Season 2) - Klingon episode
And if you just wanted to see some of the best standalone episodes, here are a few:
    1. This Side of Paradise (Season 1)
    2. The City on the Edge of Forever (Season 1)
    3. Mirror, Mirror (Season 2)

14:20 "If youre gonna say something, say it quick!" -- They *can't*, that's the whole problem. :-) The "wormhole effect" is a time distortion; time inside the ship is slowing down at a geometric rate. (Admittedly not well explained in the movie; the novelization explains it a bit better.)
16:44 Yes, there is a lot of lore behind this -- although not so much with those two characters, specifically. Decker and Ilia were new characters not seen in the Original Series, although they *would* have been series regulars if the intended "Star Trek: Phase II" series had gone into production. (This movie actually started out as a possible script for one of the Phase II episodes, and then when Paramount changed their mind in the wake of Star Wars' success and decided to do a feature film instead, the "In Thy Image" script was repurposed into the feature film.)
18:58 I loved that warp effect as well. I always wished they'd kept it for the future movies and TV series, but the slit-scan technique needed to achieve it was complicated and time-consuming, so I can see why they didn't.

You're in for it now! 😆 You need to watch Star Trek II thru IV as an extended story line; Star Trek V is watchable, but arguably the weakest, and Star Trek VI is a fitting conclusion for the original cast. What most people who haven't watched the original series don't realize is how "experimental" ST:TMP was. It came out 10 years after the original series ended on TV, and the Starfleet unitards and those long, beauty shots of the Enterprise (from a time when studio models ruled) that newbies clown on were teething pains for the cinematic franchise. Go back and compare the Enterprise from ST:TOS to ST:TMP -- the ship is iconic and beautiful.

There's no backstory of the bald lady and Commander Decker, although his father is a memorable character in the original series. The score for this film is a masterpiece - maybe Jerry Goldsmith's best work. Definitely recommend Wrath of Khan - it's worthwhile to see "Space Seed' first, an episode of the original series, which has backstory, although it's not necessary.
If you can find the cinematic release of Wrath of Khan, it's much better than the subsequent TV version, which had some awful outtakes added back in. If you watch that version, the scenes in question will be obvious by the amount they make you cringe.

Glad you enjoyed this movie. It's typically not well appreciated outside the more hardcore of star trek fans.
